Dawn blessing

Wainuiomata High School’s new learning hub, Turakirae, was officially opened following a dawn blessing on Monday 29 January.

Akaranga Te Kuru began the blessing ceremony sounding the putatara, then one of the school’s Deans, Isjara Waiwai and Mātauranga Te Rauna, head of the school’s Te Kura Matua o Wainuiomata, led the blessing through the new block.

Major milestone in redevelopment Continued from page 1 The opening of Turakirae marked a major milestone in the redevelopment at the school.

This has included building three new classroom blocks. Rimu Rapa and Remutaka have already been opened.

Following the 2018 general election, which saw Labour form the government, Prime Minister Adern committed to providing funding for the rebuild.

By early last year the government had committed $67 million to the project.

The rebuild has a long history.

Following the merger of Wainuiomata College and Parkway College to form Wainuiomata High School in 2002 the need for new building was identified.

In 2007 the Ministry of Education began investigation into replacing the buildings, leading to plans being made.

The plan was pushed back, however, following the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes.

In 2018 Jacinda Adern pledged that if elected she would see to it that $24 million was provided for the rebuild she made good on the promise.

A little over two years ago a Rebuild Celebration was held on 27 January 2021 to mark the official start of the project.

The then Education Minister Chris Hipkins began the rebuild when he took a sledge hammer to start the demolition of the old buildings.

Mr Hipkins would visit the

school again, this time as Prime Minister, on 5 September 2023 and announced that the redevelopment was “making good progress”.

“I had the privilege as Education Minister of taking a sledgehammer to the old blocks when work began,” he said.

“It’s a project I’ve followed closely and am proud to see these next steps completed.

“This is a project that is 65% complete and has made great progress in what has been a challenging time for construction.

“The Government has committed to seeing the project through with a total of $67 million now committed to the project.”

The upgrades “are an investment in Wainuiomata High School’s community for many years to come.

“Creating great local schools like this, that parents want to send their children to, is yet another example of how we’re achieving this government’s goal of quality teaching spaces for all young people,” Mr Hipkins said.

The school’s new cultural precinct opened in March last year.

This facility includes a wharekai, technology and arts hubs.

Following that the three classroom blocks, Turakirae, Rimu Rapa and Remutaka, have opened.

Fire badly damages home

The importance of having smoke alarms was graphically underlined when a house in Meremere Street caught alight yesterday, 30 January.

The residents of the house woke to a smoke alarm and called the Fire Brigade at around 6:41am.

That was one of multiple calls the Fire Brigade received.

The Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade responded, sending three appliances.

“We had flames ccoming out the left side of the house on arrival,” volunteer firefighter Nathalie Pettigrew told the “Wainuiomata News”.

“The flames were huge,” she says.

Although the brigade damped the fire down quickly there was significant damage to the house.

The occupants were all safely out of the house.

They told firefighters they thought the blaze had begun in the laundry.

Fire investigators were on the scene to determine the cause of the fire once it was under control.

Yesterday’s fire “highlights the fact that smoke alarms are so important,” Nathalie says.

“Smoke alarms save lives.

“If you don’t have a smoke alarm or want your smoke alarms checked call the fire brigade.”

The number to call is 564 8340.

As the Wainuiomata Fire Station is unmanned people may need to leave a message with their name and their phone number.

Providing and checking smoke alarms is a free service, Nathalie says.

People get at least one free smoke alarm, and they get more if the fire brigade considers more are needed.

“Get your smoke alarms checked at the very least,” Nathalie says, “and if you don’t have smoke alarms we will provide them.

Walk through a hidden treasure

Wainuiomata has a hidden treasure where people can take a big step back in time and walk through a 1,000-year-old forest.

It is part of the Wainuiomata Regional Park, but a part that is normally closed to the public.

Five times a year, however, Greater Wellington Regional Council runs “The Old Forest Walk” where people can enjoy this wonderland.

The latest walk took place on Sunday 28 January and was led by Greater Wellington Ranger Vlad Macoviciuc.

Twenty people, along with three volunteer guides, went on the tour.

“We take people into the [water] catchment area that they are not normally allowed in,” Vlad told the “Wainuiomata News”.

“It seems like people had a good time yesterday,” he said the day after the walk.

“It’s a very special place,” says

John van den Hoeven, one of the volunteer guides who was on the 28 January walk.

“It is an untouched forest.

“It has never been logged and it has some massive trees, some of them well over 1,000 years old, that very few people get to see.

“It’s an impressive place, it really is,” John says.

He also notes that the people who organise Zealandia want to turn it into a sanctuary and fence it off, so that birds can be released there.

“It has a lot of potential,” he says.

Another person who undertook the latest Old Forest Walk was Sally Babbington.

“It was fantastic,” she says.

“Vlad gave a very good history of the area.”

That included the milling and the local saw mill, as well as a lot of information about the trees.

“He gives a lot of good and interesting information.

“It felt really special to go along

the track lines and see the trees, some of which are 1,200 years old.

“I didn’t know that there was an ancient forest in there.

“I think we were all blown away by it.

“Everyone really enjoyed it. It was a nice group of people [who went on the walk] and we got to know each other.”

The walk, Sally says, is very manageable and “I would highly

recommend it.”

The Old Forest Walk is held five times a year with a limit of 20 people.

It takes place monthly between November and March each year.

Settler ships feature in exhibition The ships that brought early Wainuiomata settlers from England feature in an upcoming exhibition at Petone’s seaside Art & Gift Gallery.

The exhibition features oil painting by Paul Deacon of many of the first immigrant ships to New Zealand.

It opened on Saturday 20 January and runs to Sunday 25 February.

Some very well known names are among the Wainuiomata families that came out on the early settler ships.

The Prouse family came on the Duke of Roxburgh in 1840.

James Riddle and the Dick family came on the Bengal Merchant in 1840.

James and Emma Jackson of Lowry Bay, along with the Greenwood family, came on the Duke of Roxburgh in 1840.

The Riddiford family came on the Adelaide in 1840.

The Wood Family came on the Duke of Portland in 1852.

Paul Deacon is one of New Zealand’s foremost maritime artists.

He is especially well known for his knowledge and accurate depiction of sailing ships in his magnificent oil paintings.

In preparing for this exhibi-

tion, Paul undertook considerable research in order to depict each scene as historically accurately as possible.

The exhibition will also display a number interesting A3 size preliminary sketches and studies in which Paul worked out the concept and composition of each painting.

Paintings feature the Cuba, Oriental, Aurora, Bolton, HMS Endeavour, Charlotte Jane and the Fifeshire with many scenes depicted in early Wellington harbour.

In one of the oil paintings Paul has painted the very first settler ship, Aurora, arriving off Petone Beach on 22 January 1840.

He has carefully captured a historic moment with the Aurora shown receiving a gun salute from the Cuba and being welcomed by Pito–one Māori in their Waka.

Looking in closer detail at the painting, the viewer can see that the helmsman has headed the vessel up into the wind while her sailors have ‘backed the sails’ to bring the ship to rest, ready to drop anchor.

Other crew have been deployed on the yards in readiness to furl the sails.

Internet access lowers test scores Mobile internet access is hurting student test scores, according to a recent study.

The research paper, titled ‘3G Internet and Human Capital Development’, shows that test score declines are most significant among female students and students whose parents have less education.

These groups also exhibit the largest increases in daily internet browsing following the introduction of 3G networks.

Stemper and Harvard PhD candidate Ronak Jain, utilised test score data from more than 2,000,000 students across 82 countries, including Aotearoa, through the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

They also leveraged the staggered rollout of 3G technology to investigate the impact of mobile internet access on student academic performance over nearly two decades from 2000 to 2018.

By linking 3G mobile network data to students’ test scores, they discovered that having access

to mobile internet leads to more young people owning smartphones and using the internet.

In turn, this is linked to lower test scores in all PISA subjects.

“Our research sets the stage for a more in-depth exploration of how internet usage has become ingrained in students’ lives, impacting not only their academic pursuits but also various other aspects,” says Jain.

To gain insights into students’ engagement, social connectedness and mental wellbeing within the

school context, the researchers look at homework hours, absenteeism, ease of making friends, sense of belonging and self-efficacy.

“We find evidence that measures of social connectedness and mental health –namely, ease of making friends and feeling a sense of belonging – worsen after the arrival of 3G,” says Dr Stemper, who controlled for data on student gender, school type, age, immigration status and parental education.

Among students interviewed in 2012, 2015 and 2018, 90% had a

smartphone at home, and the average daily number of minutes spent online was 250 – about four hours.

“Education policy has a role to play in regulating the use of phones in schools, but it goes far beyond that in terms of how we’re thinking about our focus and attention in other areas,” Stemper says.

“All of us have changed the way we spend time, whether we’re scrolling during dinner or while watching TV, access to high-speed mobile internet is affecting every element of our lives.”

Four Wainuiomata softballers played in the Hutt Valley team that is the 2024 North Island under 15 girls champion.

Georja Keall, Charlotte Woolley, Keilani Orupe and Niamh Sio played in the team that was undefeated in the tournament.

Played at Akina Park, Hastings, from 20 to 22 January, the tournament saw Hutt Valley win all six matches in the round robin to qualify for the semi-final.

Hutt Valley met Auckland in the semi-final, emerging with a comfortable 16-6 victory.

They were scheduled to play Counties Manukau in the final, however it was called off due to heavy rain and player safety.

The tournament organisers then declared Hutt Valley and Counties Manukau the joint champions.

Hutt Valley would have fancied their chances of victory had the final gone ahead, as they had defeated Counties Manukau 17-6 during pool play.

All four players from the valley began their softball careers with the Wainuiomata Softball Club.

However due to low numbers, Wainuiomata was not able to field an under 15 girls team, so

the four players moved to clubs over the hill.

Georja, who mainly plays shortstop, now plays for the Totara Park Softball Club.

Catcher Keilani, third base Charlotte and Niamh, who plays second base and outfield, play for

Te Aroha Softball Club.

Two other Wainuiomata players were also part of a championship winning club.

Ruby and Scarlett Morrison have been picked up by Counties Manukau.

Hutt Valley scored 91 runs dur-

ing the tournament and conceded just 17 runs.

As well as defeating Counties Manukau they also beat Whanganui 4-1, Harbour Pango 10-2, Auckland 10-1, Franklin 17-1 and Hawkes Bay 17-0.

Hutt Valley was coached by

White Sox Captain Dr Lara Andrews, White Sox player Pallas Potter, and Hutt Valley Representative Battery Coach Maui Tai. Maui is currently a student at Te Kura Matua o Wainuiomata, Wainuiomata High School.

Following Old Timers Day they will meet Oriental Rongotai away on 11 May. It is back home on 18 May for the match against Wellington.

The next two games, against Hutt Old Boys Marist on 25 May and Norths on 1 June, will both be played away.

The 8 June match against Tawa will be played at home, followed by two away games, against the Rams on 15 June and Johnsonville on 22 June.

The final Swindale Shield match of the season sees Wainuiomata play Paremata Plimmerton at home on 29 June.

Rugby draw now out

The draw for Wellington Rugby’s Swindale Shield competition, played over 13 rounds, has been published.

The team in green and black will be looking to make a significant improvement on its 2023

Swindale Shield result when it finished the competition in 11th place.

The Wainuiomata premier team will kick off its season on 6 April when they play Avalon at home.

One of the big events during the Swindale Shield competition

will be Old Timers Day on 4 May. This will feature Wainuiomata playing Petone at home.

Before that they will play Old Boys University at home on 13 April. Poneke away on 20 April and Marist St Pats away on 27 April.

Wainui’s big number Three locals represent NZ of Ki o Rahi reps

KĪ o Rahi is certainly on a big upward curve in Wainuiomata as shown by the fact that 18 players from the valley have been selected to represent Wellington at the upcoming national tournament.

The national KĪ o Rahi tournament will be held in Turangi this coming weekend, 3 and 4 February.

One of the teams, the under 19 team, is coached by Mātauranga Te Rauna and managed by Carolyn Perry, both of whom are also from Wainuiomata.

Wellington has entered two teams in the under 16 competition.

Four of the Te Upoko o Te Ika under 16 team are from Wainuio-

mata – Anahera Eru-Solomona, Lania Vaireka, BJ Walker and Niwa Purkis.

There are six Wainuiomata players in the Te Panepane o Te Ika under 16 team – Rico-Zane Kumeroa, Taongatukuiho Hill, Nixon Awa, Hana Toatoa, Ella Sue and Mahina Riana Hughes.

Te Upoko o Te Ika under 19 team has nine from Wainuiomata – Reihana Te Rauna, Braddock Akuhata, Byron Taumata, Tiaki Nager-Ropitini, Kahukura Te Rauna, Amarni ClarkeJones, Zerenity Mill-Simpson, Diamond Maas and Cahzra MillSimpson.

Trazel Moses-Wharepapa has been selected in the Te Upoko o Te Ika open team.

Three Wainuiomata players, Riana Le’afa-Paki, Billie Va’a and Fanua Rimoni, were selected for Under 18 NZ Māori Kōtiro Rugby League team.

The team competed in the

Rugby League Pasifika Youth Cup, played in Pukekohe from 24 to 28 January.

They came ever so close to victory in the tournament too.

Having qualified for the final, Māori Kōtiro played Samoa.

Following a closely contested

match Samoa emerged the winner by just two points, with the final scoreline reading 20-18.

As well as playing Rugby League, Riana, Billie and Fanua are involved with Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club’s WOW NextGen programme.

Meals on Wheels deliverers needed

Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteer drivers from Wainuiomata to deliver meals to vulnerable patients. “We are desperate for volunteer drivers,” says Fiona Doherty, the Hutt Valley DHB’s Meals on Wheels co-ordinator.

“It is very urgent.”

There are two runs in Wainuio-

mata and drivers are currently needed for both the runs. “I am needing four drivers,” Fiona says.

The volunteers collect the meals from the hospital kitchen, where all the meals are cooked, and then deliver them to the vulnerable patients, who have either had a hospital stay or have been referred by their GP. The runs usually take between

one and two hours.

Meals on Wheels are delivered daily to 150 recipients from Upper Hutt to Lower Hutt, including Wainuiomata.

Riding for Disabled a life changer Hutt Valley Riding for the Disabled (HVRDA) continue to deliver life changing opportunities thanks to a $10,000 NZCT grant for hay to help feed and sustain their hard-working horses.

HVRDA provides riding for people throughout the Hutt Valley, and currently there are 10 Wainuiomata riders who benefit from its services. HVRDA also has four volunteer helpers from Wainuiomata.

“Riding for the Disabled caters for people of all ages who are physically and intellectually challenged,” Head Coach and Centre Co-ordinator Bronwyn Hussey says.

“We employ a variety of activities and environments to help our riders achieve their goals and having healthy, well-fed horses is an integral part of our therapeutic riding programmes,” she says.

“Grass is in short supply during the winter months so we need to supplement their diet with baleage, hard feed, and extra hay in August.

“Sadly Skuggi, our therapy pony, has Cushings condition, which requires him to have no grass in his diet, so we’re only able to feed him hay.

“We ride five days a week, Monday through Friday, [and] offer Special Olympics training on Friday mornings.

“Each day has its own team of coaches and volunteers and each week over 68 volunteers willingly give us their time and expertise.

“We provide 120 rides per week and have three coaches dedicated

to helping riders achieve their individual goal, whether it is therapeutic, educational, sporting, or simply recreational.”

Riding develops, improves and promotes: * balance, co-ordination, posture and muscle tone; * concentration, self-discipline and self-esteem; * perception and spatial awareness; * communication and social skills; and * independence and decision making.

HVRDA’s riders are referred from schools, IHC, private individuals; CCS Early Intervention Centre; doctors and therapists; Conductive Education; Kimi-Ora and Wellington Early Intervention Trust.

“We are delighted to be able to help HVRD,” NZCT’s GM Grants, Marketing, and Communications, Ben Hodges, says.

“Anyone who visits their facility can see the profound effect their service has on the holistic development of its riders.

“We thank the Hardware Bar and Restaurant and Cutlers for their fundraising partnership with NZCT that made this grant possible.’’

Haley Marsh the parent of a young rider – Addy – explains.

"Addy started horse riding when she was two years old.

“She wasn’t too impressed on her first ride, but it didn’t take long for her to start to really enjoy it.

“Now she’s eight, you can’t wipe the smile off her face.

“Riding has contributed to her well-being in many ways.

“She has gained strength and control in her upper body and loves to show her friends and family how well she can ride a horse.

“We’re so grateful for the amazing, supportive team we’ve had throughout the years."

“Working with horses daily has already changed me deeply,” HVRDA assistant coach Daniele says “Horses have been a great vehicle of self-growth, not only for me, but also for all the riders we assist.

“My four-legged colleagues have taught me to speak louder and be more confident.

“It’s a challenging thing to ride a horse and a long journey to break out of our shells, but when working with these big animals you're impelled to do both faster.

“I’ve seen many people overcome their fear, learn new things, and relate to different people and animals, which is why horse riding is an experience worth having at any stage of our lives,” Daniele says.

"Horses have had a hugely positive impact on my whole life,” Susan Berkett, Senior Coach and Horse Manager says.

“To be able to share this love for our amazing horses with our clients is an amazing privilege.
