Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor is calling for nominations from people aged 16 to 18 to represent the electorate next year.

“Young people with a passion for issues in their community can go as a young MP or as a member of the media and learn more about parliament’s processes.

“At the time I was really passionate about getting young people engaged in voting.

“I thought it was a great opportunity to meet people with a similar mindset.

Dan helped launch the ‘Make It 16’ campaign to lower the voting age to 16.

The effort highlighted the need for young people to be more engaged in the parliamentary process.

“My biggest takeaway from Youth Parliament was just how much more needs to be done to address the youth disconnect.

“All I could say afterwards was how much I loved it largely due to the people I met but it made me more frustrated in terms of how much more needs to be done.

Dan is now studying International Relations and Economics

at Victoria University and he says his time in Youth Parliament contributed to that.

“Seeing how parliament engaged with people and how our (youth) voices weren’t being heard, gave me a real interest in how things are done overseas, so it certainly has impacted me.”

He says studying international relations during a global pandemic is a fascinating experience.

Dan says any teen interested in applying for Youth Parliament

and representing Ohariu should certainly do it.

“Everyone has an issue that is important to them and no matter how serious or silly it is, it will be something countless other people like you will be thinking about.

“Youth Parliament is the biggest space we have at the moment to share those issues that we all care about.

Young builders recognised Jayson Su was named the Lower North Island 2021 Registered Master Builders Carters Apprentice of the Year, Jayson is 23 years old, trained through BCITO and employed by Cremer Construction.

The Apprentice of the Year competition recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices and raises awareness of career opportunities in the building and construction industry. The competition tests our future sector leaders’ project management, business, presentation, and practical skills.

For the regional competition, each apprentice had to initially submit a building project. They then took part in a two-hour practical challenge where they were tasked with building a shoe rack. The top 10 from each region then progressed to the interview stage with a judging panel and an onsite visit to discuss their project.

The top apprentice from each region will then go on to compete in the Master Builders National competition. This includes a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel and an

Rupert is appointed for a three year term, replacing Jared Mullen who left the Office in May 2020.

Seniors’ Week to go on for golden ages Sustainability workshops, exercise classes, line dancing, cemetery tours and improv theatre are just some of the events planned for the Capital’s older community during Te Wiki KaumƗWua – Seniors’ Week 2021.

Organised by Wellington City Council, the week kicks-off tomorrow with a large variety of events and activities, all designed to help build social connections, get the older community engaged, and to encourage trying out new things.

This year’s theme is ‘Across Generations’ which is focused on ways to connect people from all generations and backgrounds from all over the Capital, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“Our senior community has a rich treasure house of lifetime

experiences that are hugely significant and represent an important contribution to the identity, culture and diversity of our city.

“This week is a great opportunity to share their stories, learn something, teach something, and connect and reconnect with people from all walks of life.

“Our senior community has every right to be proud as we are of them for their immense contribution towards making Wellington the great city it is,” adds the Mayor.

Stephen Opie, Chief Executive of Age Concern Wellington, says the start date for Seniors’ Week is significant as 1 October is International Day of Older Persons.

UAE meets with local youth

United Arab Emirates Embassy Charge d’affaires Mr Matar AlMansoori met with local youth recently for a roundtable discussion to raise awareness of the importance placed on youth empowerment.

Mr Matar Al-Mansoori, outlined the importance of Youth Empowerment from a UAE perspective, highlighting the vision, accomplishments and goals of the UAE National Youth Agenda and introducing some examples of Emirati youth impact in the UAE government.

Reasearcher Ammar Al-Maani, from the UAE Embassy’s Politics, Economics and Media Department also presented some key facts about Emirates Youth Council, Youth Circles, Youth Hubs and other UAE government’s initiatives in the youth empowerment sector.

He says the UAE government empowers young people to shoulder the responsibilities to innovate and

contribute to shaping the prosperity and future of the country.

For example he says in 2016, HE Shamma Al Mazrui, then just 22 years old, was appointed UAE Minister of State for Youth Affairs making HE the youngest minister in the world and in 2016 UAE Federal Youth Authority launched the Emirates Youth Council to help Minister Al Mazrui amplify the voice of young people in critical national discussions.

He says investing in youth has made the UAE an attractive place for young people around the region.

Young people surveyed in the annual Arab Youth Survey named the UAE the top place to live and the country they would most like their own to emulate for nine years in a row. Respondents cited the UAE’s safety, security and broad range of employment opportunities.

During the decission he highlighted the the UAE governments support for youth businesses through

dedicated funds and awards, that aim to support young entrepreneurs in different phases (small and medium enterprise sector.

He also talked about the Federal Youth Authority (FYA) an initiative which oversees the work of youth councils.

“FYA oversees progress of the National Youth Agenda, connects young people to government, develops leadership skills and harnesses youth-insight with which to better develop policy and serve the UAE,” he says.

In 2016, HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the establishment of the Emirates Youth Councils.

“Seven Emirates Youth Councils were established first to serve as role models in engaging and inspiring young people across the seven emirates. Besides Emirates YC there are now Local YC, Ministerial YC, Corporate YC and Global YC,” My Ammar Al-Maani says.

“What I wanted to figure out was which

laundry detergent cleans best and what was the optimal temperature,” says Edward, age 11. “I chose to do this because lots of New Zealanders have to do washing which takes a lot of water. So I wanted to find out which laundry detergent would be most efficient for all of that water”.

Science and Technology are integral components of the curriculum at St Mark’s School. From Preschool through to Year 6, the teachers weave Science principles into the daily classroom learning; and in Years 7 and 8 the students have weekly Science lessons with a specialist teacher. The school offers a collaborative, discovery approach to Science, and in a recent external International Baccalaureate evaluation the school received a commendation for building a stimulating learning environment.

“This year has been another excellent academic year for us”, says Kent Favel, Principal of St Mark’s School. “The NIWA Science Fair is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain recognition for their work and we are very proud of their achievements.’’

Green light to a healthier, safer low carbon city Wellington City Council gave the green light to consult on a connected bike network that will make streets safer and healthier for everyone.

The Council also voted to get going quickly on safer bike routes between Newtown and the city, and the Botanic Garden ki Paek k and the city. These will be developed using adaptable materials, so people can use them, make suggestions, and help refine the design.

Transitional changes like this will include pedestrian and public transport benefits, and pave the way for bigger changes that will come through the Let’s Get Wellington Moving programme.

Mayor Andy Foster says rolling out a fully connected, 147km network of safer routes over the next 10 years so people can choose to bike, scoot, walk or take public transport

will help set the city up for a more sustainable lower carbon future.

“Public engagement for the bike network will run alongside engagement for a big picture LGWM programme and District Plan. We are very keen, in the latter part of this year, to put our integrated and transformational transport and urban district plan before our community,” says Mayor Foster.

Fundraising a key for Yellow Pages Community groups will take to the streets to deliver 176,000 copies of the Yellow Pages throughout Wellington from now until October 3.

Yellow NZ distributes the books nationwide as part of an agreement with the government to ensure equitable access to emergency and essential information.

While this key information is also available online, Yellow Head of Customer Experience June Hartel says the Yellow Pages book offers people a choice in the way they search, and it can be more ‘user-friendly’ when it comes to finding a local business: “Not everyone has ultrafast broadband in New Zealand, or is able to find the kind of hyper-local information they need when they search online. Add to this the 34%(1) of small businesses nationwide who have no online presence, and the book plays an important role in making connections.”

The money goes towards everything from maintenance around the club to the purchase of new rowing equipment, boats, oars and lifejackets.

Got Pets? YIP! Hey Everyone! Hope you are all adjusting to the daylight savings jet lag. I did feel this year, there weren’t much awareness around it, but thank goodness for smart phones adjusting automatically. This week, I want to share with you some tips around looking after your home, in relation to pets. Most pets are pretty good, and personally I’d say most pets look after the house better than the average toddler or teenager – but sadly in our line of work, we do see some bad situations. s ,AWNS – If you have a dog or other animal that does their #1s in the yard, chances are you will have some burn patches in the grass. I personally use a product called ‘dog rocks’ that filters the impurities that causes this. It just sits in the dog bowl and works like magic! The product (and few other options) is available at all good pet stores.

This has resolved all the lawn issues we’ve had with our dog. s #AT 3CRATCHING – Our two cats love to scratch, they will scratch everything and anything if they had the choice, from corner of walls & furniture all the way to curtains and drapes. We’ve managed to save the condition of our property by initially applying a repellent on key areas, then we placed scratching posts / pads everywhere they have been scratching. Treats/food were rewarded when the scratching post/pads were used properly. s 0OLISHED &LOORS – If you have beautiful, polished, timber floors, chances are it isn’t looking like the day it was done. The top layer of the polish is quite soft and delicate, that it picks up indentations from heeled shoes and of course the claws of your pets.

RELIEVING INDIGESTION & HEARTBURN Who hasn’t suffered from indigestion and heartburn, especially after overdoing it with food or drink, or when rushing meals? These are very common conditions although for some of us, indigestion and heartburn happen for other reasons and can cause considerable discomfort. It’s good to know that help is available from your Self Care pharmacist.

With indigestion (or dyspepsia), we can feel sick and experience gas, or a bloated feeling, in the stomach. “Indigestion causes discomfort and pain in the area between your ribs and belly button, and occurs during eating, or immediately after” advise Self Care pharmacists. A common symptom of indigestion is heartburn, where there is a burning feeling rising upwards from the stomach towards the throat. The acid contents of the stomach return, or ‘reflux’, back into the oesophagus (the space between the throat and the stomach, which is shaped like a tube) and causes irritation there.

Indigestion and heartburn can be caused by: s Foods such as cabbage, onions, cucumber, curries and chocolate. s Certain drinks, e.g. alcohol, fizzy drinks, strong coffee and tea. s Eating food too fast; eating fatty or large meals, especially late at night. s Stress and anxiety, smoking, bending and stooping, being overweight. s Pregnancy s Certain medicines – such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medicines for pain and arthritis.

Try to identify the cause of your indigestion or heartburn and if possible avoid these things.

If the medicines you take give you symptoms, let your pharmacist or doctor know. Sometimes taking food at the same time as you take your medicines can help. Remember to take your medicines with a glass of water, while sitting or standing upright.

According to Self Care pharmacists, “there

are changes you can make to help prevent or reduce symptoms of indigestion and heartburn. They include stopping smoking (see the Quit Smoking fact card); avoiding rich, spicy, fatty foods, and large meals late in the day, and eating smaller meals; having plenty of physical activity – at least 30 minutes most days; losing weight if you are overweight (see the Weight and Health fact card) and learning to relax and sleep well (See the Sleeping Well fact card).” Sometimes focusing on lifestyle changes may be all that is needed to stop indigestion and heartburn.

If medicines are required, your pharmacy has a wide range of products available for the short-term relief of heartburn and indigestion symptoms. “We can assist you in selecting the one that is best for your situation”, advise Self Care pharmacists. Antacids neutralise excess acid in the stomach. They can provide quick and effective relief but their effects don’t last long. Reflux symptoms can be relieved by medicines called alginates that form a ‘raft’ on top of your stomach contents, helping to prevent them being regurgitated. Where these medicines do not help, or symptoms are experienced as often as 2 or more times per week, other medicines may be required that decrease the amount of acid made by the stomach. There are several different types of medication available that do this. Your pharmacist can, in certain circumstances, supply these medicines without a prescription for the short term relief of heartburn symptoms.

Your Self Care pharmacist will advise if this is appropriate for you.

“If there is still no improvement with lifestyle measures along with short-term use of medicines, or if symptoms suggest another cause, then we would refer you to your doctor for further investigations and treatment”, confirm Self Care pharmacists. “Our Indigestion & Heartburn fact card has more information, so ask us for a copy.”

Rural communities urged for sightings of crop-eating pest bird Greater Wellington is calling out to rural communities in the Greater Wellington region to ‘look for rooks’ in its annual awareness campaign.

A large, glossy, purplish-black bird with a harsh call, rooks cause significant damage to agricultural crops by destroying newly sprouted crops’ seedlings and reducing crop yields.

With less predictable weather patterns also making crops more vulnerable, reducing rook numbers becomes increasingly important to ensure our regions food security, when viewed through the lens of a changing climate.

Adding in the risk of these unplanned, potentially volatile weather events that could further damage crops, the consequences of not controlling rooks, become far greater for our region.

Greater Wellington Climate Committee Chair, Councillor Thomas Nash says, “Protecting crops from additional damage is not only important to the economic wellbeing of our region’s primary production, but is also important for resilience to climate change in this sector.”

Every year, as part of our Regional Pest Management Plan, Greater Wellington’s biosecurity team work with local and neighbouring councils to monitor and control this pest bird.

While rook numbers are down, with Greater Wellington reporting an 86% decrease in rook population over the last 10 years. Glen Falconer, Pest Animals Team Leader at Greater Wellington, urges landowners to report any sightings on their land, “there aren’t many left, but we need help from landowners to make sure the population doesn’t persist or have opportunities to re-establish and grow.”

People are most likely to spot a rook nest (rookery) in large exotic trees such as pines or gums, and sometimes near buildings or houses.

Senior Biosecurity Officer, Steven Playle says “while we want our community’s assistance with monitoring rooks, rook control is a specialist task which needs to be done by a Greater Wellington Biosecurity Officer.

Attempting to do this yourself can make the problem worse, or cause unnecessary distress to the birds.”

Black Caps make right decision to exit Pakistan It is hard to argue with the Black Caps getting the hell out of Dodge when it came to their Pakistan tour but questions should be asked as to why they were there in the first place.

While the full details are not yet clear, the tour, New Zealand’s first in 18 years, was called off on the morning of the first game.

If the New Zealand Government is to be believed, there was a direct threat made against the team.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she feared the team would be

attacked, had the tour continued.

That is good enough for me and should be good enough for most people for the plug to be pulled on the tour.

Cricket teams have been targeted before.

Six members of the Sri Lanka national cricket team were wounded and six Pakistani policemen and two civilians were killed in an attack in 2009.

New Zealand’s 2002 team narrowly avoided a similar issue.

Pakistani cricket fans have reacted angrily and without common sense, blasting the Black Caps on social media for pulling out and drawing comparisons to safety concerns of playing in New Zealand following the Christchurch mosque shootings two years ago.

Yes, Bangladesh was touring at the time of that tragedy but the team themselves was not directly targeted and the tour was rightly called off immediately.

Pakistan has long had issues ensur-

ing teams’ safety.

It’s a volatile country known for harbouring terrorists regularly.

With the world trying to deal with a global pandemic, was the time right for the first New Zealand cricket tour to Pakistan in 20 years? Hindsight suggests no.

The tour should have been put on the back burner for another five years minimum.

All of that is easy to say in hindsight but this outcome has harmed the relationship between the two

countries’ cricketing bodies.

North Wellington let season finale slip away

Melbourne Storm to beat the Panthers in the NRL and North Wellington will have no trouble over Wainuiomata in the last Central Football League game of the season.

As things turned out, It was actually a case of Yeah Nah on both counts.

Atrocious winds at Alex Moore Park on Saturday could do nothing to hinder the vocal Wainuiomata crowd who had ventured over the hill to see if their lads could at least win one game this season before relegation to the local Wellington Men’s Premier League in 2022. And win they did in convincing fashion with a 3-1 victory.

The replay will no doubt be locked on continuous loop in the Wainui fan base’s collective memory for eternity.

One win, one draw, 16 losses and a negative 69 goal differential from 18 games will not linger as a stat with

the visitors. The brave few Norths fans who battled the elements could have been mistaken in thinking that Wainui had actually won the league, such was their reaction at full time.

Despite a mountain of possession in the opening minutes, Norths could not contain a probing run down the right hand flank against the run of play that was expertly crossed and tapped in past the Norths keeper by Fraser Brown. It was 1-0 to Wainui after 7 minutes and that’s the way it stayed until the half time break.

Captain, Gavin Hoy, had a man of the match performance for North Wellington and he battled hard throughout the match in a typically enterprising fashion; creating and taking chances at every opportunity. His equaliser 10 minutes after the smoko break was a fine effort, shooting from the right hand angle at close range after ghosting through

the Wainui defence to set up his own opportunity.

Norths had a lot of hard work to do to get something out of the match but were guilty of leaving their flanks exposed, not getting enough bodies in the box on attack and crucially not converting the myriad of chances that were created. The writing was on the wall when a Wainui attacker was deemed to have been tripped in the box and Fraser Brown converted to make it a brace for him and 2-1 up to the green machine with just 12 minutes remaining in the match.

The ref’s watch said 90 minutes but there was still time for Adam Ross to score the goal of the match and no doubt the season for Wainuiomata, to lock in a final score of 3-1. It was a cracker of a shot from a fair way out and really put the icing on the Wainui cake.

There was double delight for Onslow footballers as they won their first Wellington premier title since 1993 with a victory on penalties against four-time reigning champions, Wellington Girls’ College.

Last week, they won their first Wellington premier title since 1993 with a victory on penalties against four-time reigning champions, Wellington Girls’ College.

It was the first time since 2003 when Onslow lost to Samuel Marsden they had been involved in a decider.

Onslow was seventh in the Premiership in 2019, jumping to third last year and then champions by holding their nerve in an 11-shot shootout.

The Ross twins Hannah and Nicola have been at the forefront of the ascent.

Together they have combined for an estimated 160 games. However central defender Hannah concedes she was petrified when her turn to take a penalty arrived at 5-5.

“I went up to take our sixth shot but had a bit of a panic attack so Scarlett (O’Donnell) was really brave and went instead. I wasn’t standing there to go next, I was standing there cause I’m a really good friend,” Hannah laughed.

Year 10 Scarlett scored while her sister Eliza O’Donnell watched on in the losing team.

“It means a lot to us and the school to win this trophy,” Hannah said.

“At halftime we had to settle down, pass more, and get more possession in their half. They scored the first goal and we did well to keep them out. In the second-half our energy levels were up.

It was still very stressful, but getting a goal was a great booster,” she continued.

Golden boot winning striker Olivia Ingham was the source of the goal. Attacking midfielder Nicola was at the fore.

“The great thing about our defense is they can transition quickly onto attack.

WGC had a good first-half but we regrouped at halftime and switched on.

We created a lot of opportunities. We’ve got a good balance,” Nicola said.

Wellington Girls’ won the last encounter which went to penalties against Onslow but Hannah insists Onslow had a positive mindset.

“Choose a spot, don’t change your mind, and stay calm was our approach.

All the girls were amazing.”

The Ross twins have been in the First XI since Year 9. Their leadership has helped nurture a side that only has one other Year 13.

“Our coach Rachel Finlay has been amazing. She’s a sports scientist and went to the 2018 Under-17 World Cup with New Zealand. We’ve got dinner at our place next week to celebrate. It’s going to be weird not playing for Onslow next year, but I’m proud of what we’ve done,” Nicola concluded.
