On hearing he was New Zealand’s top Digital Technologies student for his year group Daniel said he was “shocked and excited”.

Daniel also says he is very happy with his success this year and looks forward to taking part in ICAS again next year.

As well as being top in Digital Technologies, Daniel received High Distinction in

two other subjects – science and mathematics.

This means he finished in the top 1% in New Zealand.

Four other Cashmere Avenue School students also received High Distinction.

Jeremy received the award in year 4 Digital Technology, Ellie in Year 4 writing and Keira and Luciana in Year 3 English.

“It is wonderful to see our school value of ‘Pride’ shown by all our students when they

have a go at ICAS and when they do so well,” the school’s Tumuaki (Principal) Adelle Jensen says.

“It is very special to have one of our children be awarded an ICAS medal.”

Cashmere Avenue School has a proud history in the ICAS competitions.

Several students have been awarded ICAS medals in various subjects over the years.

In fact the school had an

unprecedented number of four students receiving ICAS medals in 2020.

Schools tyhroughout Australasia can sign up to be involved in ICAS and students can registers in subjects like English, Writing, Science, Mathematics and Digital Technologies.

An ICAS medal is awarded to the student who received the highest mark in New Zealand for each of the subjects offered in each age group.

Safeguarding Wellington’s waters Measures to maintain and enhance Wellington waterbodies are among proposed changes to Greater Wellington’s Natural Resources Plan (NRP) unanimously supported by regional councillors at their 25 October council meeting.

NRP Change 1, which includes policies and rules to protect fresh and coastal waters, as well as Te Awarua-oPorirua (Porirua Harbour) and Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour), is now open for public consultation.

The proposed changes would strengthen the role of Council and mana whenua as kaitiaki, ensuring water and land use is

managed sustainably, Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter says.

“Wellingtonians want to swim and collect kai in their awa and moana.

“They want healthy wai, thriving ecosystems and a regional council committed to protecting te taiao.” Cr Ponter says.

“Following years of in-depth discussion with mana whenua and our communities, we’ve reached a key milestone.”

The council is “proposing significant changes that will safeguard our fresh and coastal waters by managing land-based activities that affect them.”

Te Upoko Taiao Chair and regional councillor David Lee acknowledges the vital role of the Whaitua Committee members and mana whenua have played throughout the community-led process.

“Greater Wellington wishes to acknowledge the mahi of our Whaitua Committee members and mana whenua, whose unwavering commitment and vast array of knowledge have been instrumental in setting these proposed freshwater standards.”

NRP Change 1 aims to reduce the amount of contaminants being discharged to water bodies from activities like earthworks

and urban development, Greater Wellington Environment Committee chair Penny Gaylor says.

“It also recommends amendments to regional biodiversity schedules, to protect more of our precious native plants, animals and ecosystems, like the black coral colony recently identified on the Kāpiti Coast.”

Consultation on Change 1 to the National Resources Plan is open until 15 December 2023.

Landlord Crisis! What is the solution?

Although the OCR has not moved, banks continue to increase interest rates, which continue to haemorrhage residential landlords’ savings, when you factor in true cost and opportunity loss – There will not be a residential landlord who is profiting from their rental investment. The average landlord could be losing $20k-$30k per year in true cashflow and when factor in opportunity loss/cost, that true loss can double or triple. Considering there are around 450,000 privately owned rentals in NZ, this is a very, very big problem that no one has addressed or even acknowledged.

The potential ‘promises’ from political parties won’t do much to save this equation, as interest rates comfortably creep over the 7% mark. Yes, in the lifetimes past, there were steady long-term capital gains (mostly fuelled by falling interest rates and inflation). Although NZ has been economically performing much better than most, the major the banks in NZ are globally owned and exposed - which means they may not be considering NZ’s market for NZ’s conditions - rather how they can make more profits. Which sadly might be to further milk the situation in NZ longer.

When you look at rental income, and deduct all expenses (rates, insurance, maintenance, mortgage costs, depreciation of aspects, management costs, etc) you quickly realise that landlords are making significant losses. Even if you don’t have a mortgage, your entire property value is a giant bundle of cash sitting there, and that money should be making you something.

For example, if your rental is worth $700k and is freehold, you need to factor in your

opportunity loss. If you had $700k in a term deposit at 6%+, then you would be getting $42k/pa+ gross income, with none of the cost of owning a rental. If your rental was losing $20k/pa, then you could be $62k better off every year.

Wellington needs landlords, and unless we get a proper chunk of the immigration numbers, we are sadly going to be entering a rough patch for landlords (especially with public sector job cut, unemployment rising and salaries falling). If you are a landlord and want to sit down for a strategy review OR if you got a great idea that could solve this problem – I would absolutely love to hear from you.

inbrief news Big thank you The Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust has posted a “big thank you” to the “Indpendent Herald” and local residents on Facebook.

A few weeks ago the trust posted on Facebook about “the needs of one of our local jewels, our local Bird Hospital.

“We asked for help from our locals and we were not disappointed.

“Not only did a reporter follow up with a story, that featured in The Herald paper but it would seem that we have some new volunteers and financial donations.

“I believe a special thank you also goes out to a household that has donated box loads of preloved Polar Fleece blankets.”

These will be used to create custom made blankets and beds for the birds.

Heritage Festival The Wellington Heritage Festival continues this week.

The festival, featuring a host of activites throughout the Wellington region, began on 23 October and runs until Sunday 5 November.

Nikki Rae wins major award

Karori’s Nikki Rae has just won a major award.

Nikki won the Lash Artist of the Year in Lash Industry New Zealand’s 2023 awards – the first year the awards have been run.

“I was really proud [to win the award] because lash extensions are a relatively new part of the beauty industry,” she says.

She was also really pleased “to be recognised by my peers for the work I do” and also really pleased “to shine a spotlight on the lash extension industry.”

Nikki is the proprietor of Nikki Rae Beauty and her shop is located at 234 Karori Road, just opposite the Karori Mall.

She opened the shop in March last year, Before that she worked on lash extensions from home.

Industry Awards were selected by 50% public vote and 50% independent judging panel within the industry.

This followed the naming of the finalists, and Nikki was one of four finalists for the Lash Artist of the Year Award.

The aim of the awards is to honour those who have made significant contributions to the lash industry, whether through their exceptional artistry, their commitment to education and

The Lash Artist of the Year was presented to Nikki for consistently providing excellent services to her clients, and demonstrating skill and creativity in her work.

Spring Into Tawa a huge success

This year’s Mexted Motors Spring Into Tawa festival was a “great success,” says Stacey Richardson who leads the team that organises the event.

“The weather was fantastic and we had the biggest crowd we’ve ever had,” Stacey says.

Around 9,000 to 10,000 people attended Spring Into Tawa, held in the suburb’s main shopping area between 10am and 3pm on Saturday 28 October.

“It was a pretty cool event, seeing people enjoying the sunshine, having fun and connecting with each other,” Stacey says.

People attending were able to browse and buy from 140 stalls, set up by local community organisations and businesses, and the

stalls included food stalls and trucks.

The three entertainment stages featured a wide variety of local performers.

These included the Tawa Learner’s Band, the Red Heckle Pipe Band, who rehearse in Tawa, dance schools, kapa haka groups and the Pasifika ensembel from Tawa Intermediate School.

The stages rovided “a real oppunity to showcase local entertainers,” Stacey says.

One of the three stages was a children’s stage, which featured a wide variety of children’s entertainment, including a circus act.

Five Central Pulse Netball players also featured at the festival, shooting the ball, taking selfies and meeting the crowd.

Harold the Life Education giraffe also made a guest appearance.

J’ville town centre Jeweller adds bespoke improvements planned brilliance to your proposal

New street art, murals, flags and baskets for the Johnsonville Town Centre are included in the new Johnsonville Business Group’s (JBG) draft strategic plan.

The JBG has budgeted $8,000 for these initiatives.

“While the limited budget will not go far, often small initiatives are able to provide a positive impression,” the draft plan says.

“The budget will not fund all the JBG aspiratons.

“The unbudgeted initiatives will be worked on over 2023-2024 and the future funding for these will be sought.”

A new, large “Welcome to Johnsonville” sign is also in the JBG plan.

“To improve our sense of identity, JBG are investigating how a large town sign can be funded.

“This may be a mix of both public funding and fund-raising.”

The JBG says it would like to improve the overall presentation of the town centre.

“While the method of doing so is yet to be confirmed, graffiti is one problem that can be addressed.

“A budget has been set asie for this purpose.”

The JBG has begun a petition for a new town centre plan to be developed in collaboration with the Wellington City Council (WCC) and funded by the council.

“The last Johnsonville Town Centre Plan was completed in 2008, some 15 years ago, and very little of this plan has been implemented,” the JBG says.

Three initiatives the JBG would like to see the WCC implement are a new indoor recreation centre for Johnsonville, a new central green space and new public toilets in the central business district.

“Two recent submissions and presentations have been given to WCC to ensure our community facilities are fit for purpose and meet the needs of our existing and future population,” JBG noted.

“By driving additional public investment into our local facilities we can improve the offering of Johnsonville to our catchment.

“An indoor recreation centre, while providing a useful local facility, will be a destination site for outside visitors to visit Johnsonville and to naturally spend money while here.

“Likewise, a central green space close to the main road will improve our attractiveness as well as bringing added social benefits and fostering collaboration.

“Our community needs a focal point, a heart, to breathe life into our commercial hub,” the plan says.

The JBG is also working towards seeking CCTV camera installation in the Johnsonville central business district.

“The cost of CCTV cameras can be quite large and is not within the capacity of JBG to self-fund. “We are discussing and will continue to discuss how this could be achieved in collaboration with WCC. “WCC have monitored CCTV cameras within Wellington’s CBD which are paid for by local rates.

“We reason that Johnsonville, as Wellington’s largest metropolitan centre, should have the same level of monitoring,” the plan says.

Onslow College celebrates success

Onslow College celebrated the 2023 success of its students at its Pō Whakanui (Celebration of Success) on 25 October.

Unlike other secondary schools in New Zealand, Onslow College does not have a prizegiving.

Nor does it name a dux or a proxime accessit.

As the Tumuaki (Principal) Sheena Millar

said at the evening: “this is not a traditional prizegiving, as it is run by students for students.”

The awards presented “are about students celebrating students,” Ms Millar said.

The evening “is a special occasion and a celebration of our community.”

As well as a variety of performances and presentation of videos, awards for a variety of service as well as academic achievement were presented.

Fabulous Karori School gala Karori Normal School held its first fullscale gala since COVID-19 on Saturday 28 October.

The gala is a well-known community event and the school’s largest annual fundraiser.

The event brought joy to the community who is grieving the recent loss of its longtime Principal (Conrad Kelly) and Board of Trustees member (Joe Benbow), in addition to the death of Gaye McPheat (teacher) at the start of the year.

Awards were presented to the top academic students in years 11 to 13. These were: Year 11 Maia Thompson, Dominic Naidu, Scarlett Woods, Melina Hogg and Lotta Winkler.

Year 12 Nishka Parekh, Jedh-Mairielle Racho, Michael Ling, Klara Toth and Orla O’Meara.

Year 13 Tuhina Sambhus, Mehmet Janjua, Jayne Holmes, Sophie Buick and Elizabeth Tam. A whole series of other awards were also presented, including the Prime Minister’s Vocational Excellence Award, won by Jack Findlay and the Onslow Spirit Award, won

by Tait Heller.

In her speech at the Pō Whakanui evening, Ms Millar spoke about success.

“I have been thinking a lot about what

being successful means,” she said.

“I know some people think a successful education system is one that means New Zealand students are in the top of the PISA results and that ranking young people and schools against each other is what will mean New Zealand has a successful education system.

“But I think success is about a lot more than just academic accolades.

“It’s about valuing hard work, learning to cherish and nurture relationships, knowing how to look after ourselves, being resilient and creative.”

Success was also about “having grit, understanding equity and being able to collaborate with others, honouring Te Tiriti, valuing diverse thought and always being open to learning,” Ms Millar said.

The event concluded with the highly anticipated ‘Jaffa Roll’, where approximately 500 numbered orange chocolate balls were released down a hill.

The ticket holder with the number corresponding to the jaffa which crossed the finish line first was the winner.

“The gala was a fabulous event. My children had the most enjoyable day and are still raving about it,” says Arohia Dunn, winner of the ‘Jaffa Roll’.

33 years of creativity celebrated The Wellington Quilters Guild celebrated its 33rd birthday at its October meeting, where a celebratory cake was cut by three of the six life members.

After meeting for 32 years in and around the Wellington CBD, Wellington Quilters now meets in Johnsonville.

Meetings are monthly and are full of colour and inspiration, with a Show and Tell, a speaker, and refreshments served from 6:30pm.

The guild started in 1990 and was incorporated in 1992, so this year it is celebrating 33 years of creativity and community service.

Members taught quilting at Arohata Women’s Prison for nearly 20 years and donate quilts to many good causes.

The Women’s Refuge and Te Whare Rokiroki , (Maori Womens’ Refuge) have received more than 90 quilts each year.

In recent years quilts have also been made for Wellington Hospital, Foster Hope and distributed by Crafting Threads of Aroha to other groups with a need.

“We are encouraging people to bring their takeaways and have a social time before the meeting starts at 7:30pm,” the guild’s President Judi Ferguson says.

“Browsing the library, admiring the Block of the Month as it is put up on the wall, buying raffle tickets and signing up for classes are all possible during this time.

“We love having visitors come to our meetings, and for any visitors who come on their own, our hostess will find someone to support them for the evening.”

Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month from 6:30pm, at Uniting Church,

High demand for check on govt actions Demand for the Chief Ombudsman to provide a “trusted check” on the actions and decisions of the Government is higher than ever, Peter Boshier, said on 24 October when publising his 2022-23 Annual Report.

The rport, Mr Boshier said, reflected the fact that more and more people were coming to him concerned about how decisions of the Government and public sector agencies were affecting their lives.

“The economic and social challenges being experienced by many New Zealanders have had a significant effect on the work of my office over the past 12 months,” Mr

Boshier said in a statement.

“There has been a greater emphasis on the need for transparency and accountability across the public sector including agencies involved in decision-making around issues like response, recovery and rebuild so the rights of people during challenging times are protected.

“This has resulted in an increased demand for public engagements from my office as well as a greater demand for advice from agencies who are at the forefront of this work.

“The challenges people are facing are reflected in the ongoing high number of complaints I am receiving.

“Over the past year, I received the second highest number of complaints ever, exceeding the number received in the years following the Canterbury earthquakes and the early pandemic period.”

Overall, the number of complaints received by the Chief Ombudsman in 2022/23 were 46% higher than the average number received in the four years prior to the pandemic.

“I received 2,059 official information complaints and 4,028 Ombudsman Act complaints as well as more than 5,000 enquiries,” Mr Boshier said.

He also published two self-initiated investigation reports, “Ready

or not?”– an investigation into 12 government agencies’ official information practices – and “Kia Whaitake: Making a Difference”, a report on his systemic investigation into Ara Poutama Aotearoa | Department of Corrections.

“I also completed 101 visits and inspections to various places of detention where I identified a range of issues including poor living conditions, over-occupancy and workforce issues.

“I made 67 recommendations for improvements to conditions and treatment of detainees.”

The Chief Ombudsman said demand from whistle-blowers raising

concerns about serious wrongdoing in their workplace is also on the rise.

“In 2022/23, I received 128 protected disclosures and related enquiries which is an 80% increase on the previous year.

“This year marks 60 years since the role of Ombudsman was first established in New Zealand.

“In October 1962 our first Ombudsman, Sir Guy Powles, promised to look for ‘reason, justice, sympathy and honour’ when examining and reporting on the actions and decisions of Government.

“More than half a century later, and in very different times, my focus remains the same,” he said.

Greater WellingtonRegional Council will establish a Māori constituency for the 2025 local government elections following a decision the council made on 26 October..

The decision has the unanimous support of Greater Wellington’s mana whenua partners: Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki, Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Taranaki Whānui ki te Ūpoko o te Ika, Rangitāne ō Wairarapa and Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa.

This decision is an important step forward in honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, ensuring the voices of mana whenua and mātāwaka will be heard, embedded, and carried forward by future councils and their decisions, Greater Wellington’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi Komiti chair Hikitia Ropata, and Greater Wellington’s first elected Māori councillor says.

“A Māori constituency creates a permanent place for a Māori voice at the regional governance table.”

2022 population data shows the Māori electoral population made up 8.17 percent of the Wellington Region’s total electoral population, enabling a single member Māori constituency at Greater Wellington.

Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter believes forming a Māori constituency is the right decision.

“We are joining the many councils across Aotearoa who have welcomed a Māori constituency in recent years, as we continue to build strong, equitable partnerships with mana whenua,” Cr Ponter says.

“We understand our obligations under Te Tiriti go beyond establishing this constituency, and we expect the councillor who represents it will help us honour those commitments.”

To Helmut Modlik, Te Runanga o Toa Rangatira chief executive, the decision “is a welcome step forward in strengthening the governance of our region and nation.

“I commend Greater Wellington for their wisdom. We look forward to building stronger communities and realising the benefits of this decision together.”

On behalf of Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki, chair Denise Hapeta says: “Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki recognises the need for a greater Māori voice within council decision making. We support the establishment of a Māori Constituency.”

This sentiment is echoed by Taranaki Whānui chair Kara Dentice, who says: “Introducing Māori wards is a positive step forward in including Māori views in the nation’s decision making process.”

“Yet, Taranaki Whānui insists this must not come at the expense of undermining Te Tiriti promises, and the bond between mana whenua and Greater Wellington.”

Kahungunu ki Wairarapa kaimahi taiao, Rawiri Smith, notes the positive opportunity: “Stronger Māori representation will bring our region a wider understanding of Wellington’s region.

Over the last few years, Jennifer’s focus has changed with the opportunities to become more involved atmospheric firings - wood, salt and soda, and the building of a diesel kiln at Te Horo for The Mirek Arts Trust.

This style of firing pottery creates interesting surface effects from salt and soda added to the firing at high temperatures. Work fired in these kilns produce juicy surfaces, and each piece is individual, not repeatable, making them one–off pieces of ceramic art. It is exciting to be involved and I feel very lucky to be part of this wonderful community project.

Work on show at this year’s Kapiti Coast Arts Trail has come for a variety of kiln’s Darryl Frost, Mike & Judy Page wood-soda kiln and latest kiln build, and salt and soda firings from the Hautere kiln, built with Duncan Shearer for the Mirek Arts Trust.

Two locals in collaborative exhibition

Karori photographer Simon Woolf and Wilton artist Rachel Walker feature in an upcoming exhibition at Petone’s Alfred Memelink Artspace Gallery.

The exhibition, featuring New Zealand nature and Wellington, opens tomorrow, 3 November.

Following the opening the exhibition will run from 4 November to 3 December at the gallery, 223 The Esplanade Petone.

The galler y is open from 10.30am to 4pm Tuesday to Sunday and entry is free.

Rachel’s artwork is ink and watercolours while Simon’s photographs feature large black and white images and smaller colour photos.

“I’m really excited by it,” Simon says.

“It’s not anything I’ve been involved in before.”

The collaboration between the two artists is a good one, Simon says.

“It is really exciting that we are both doing similar things.”

As well as presenting the images, the exhibition aims to elicit “conversation about protecting what we have.

“It’s both advocacy and art and both are important,” he says.

His works include “big bold, beaustiful black and white photos that feature birds and the city.”

Five of the big images are of Wellington and the remainder are birds.

Two birds that are regular visitors to his place – Ted the resident Tui and Keira the resident Kaka – will be on display.

“Keira has been coming around here for two or three years now of her own volition, just to carry out some conversation.

“And we have had Ted here for a couple of years now,” Simon says.

Rachel will be exhibiting a large collection of framed prints of her

artwork undertaken over the last few years, including some recent original paintings.

“These include a big Huia, inspired by this year’s Bird of the Century competition run by Forest and Bird, which includes extinct birds just for this year,” Rachel says.

“There’s a piece named ‘Sanctuary’ which showcases the rare native Hihi and Tieke/Saddleback birds, whom mostly survive inside protected sanctuaries nowadays.

“There’s a big ‘Forest Tangle’ which is a bouquet of native plants, specifically epiphytes which are found at Ōtari Wilton’s Bush, a place near and dear to me,” Rachel says.

“As well as presenting spectacular beautiful new original paintings, this exhibition will also include a great selection of [Rachel’s] cheerful, bright and popular limited edition prints,” Alfred Memelink says.

“Rachel creates her magical paintings using a combination of watercolour, spray paint, [and] pen and ink techniques that draw on her awe of New Zealand nature.

“Her drippy, energetic style is both loose in form and precisely detailed, capturing the attitude and beauty of our birds, sea creatures, reptiles and wild animals.

“Rachel’s original paintings and limited edition prints grace the walls of many wonderful homes around New Zealand and she welcomes inquiries for commissions.

“Rachel has also created cover art for magazines, school journals and albums, corporate art and murals and a recent New Zealand stamp edition.

November’s switch to water challenge New Zealand’s Dental Association (NZDA) is asking Kiwis to ditch sugary drinks for the month of November as part of the NZDA’s annual Switch to Water Challenge.

This year’s 30-day challenge launched yesterday, 1 November, to coincide with New Zealand’s National Oral Health Day and aims to put the spotlight squarely on the negative role sugar plays in our diet.

The Dental Association is thrilled to have former Olympian and Black Sticks hockey player

Brooke Neal back onboard this year to help promote the challenge and support participants.

“Water is my go-to drink of choice for maintaining physical and mental wellbeing,” says Neal.

“During my time as a sportswoman, it was important to stay well hydrated and water is the best choice for that.

“What is less appreciated is its role in supporting positive mental health,” she says.

“The 30-day challenge offers everyone a fun way to do something positive for their health and

wellbeing ahead of summer and the sugar laden temptations that go with the festive season.”

Research reveals Kiwis consume around 37 teaspoons of sugar per day and that’s having a hugely detrimental effect on their health.

Adults should ideally consume n more than 6 teaspoons per day, and children no more than 3 to 4 per day.

Sugary drinks are a leading cause of tooth decay and contribute significantly to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and many other health

problems. Currently, nearly two thirds of adults and one third of children are either overweight or obese in New Zealand.

In recent years, upwards of 30,000 children a year have had one or more teeth removed due to dental decay through the Community Oral Health Service or through the public hospital system.

NZDA President Dr Amanda Johnston says switching from sugary drinks for water has benefits for your whole body, but especially your mouth.

“As a general dentist in Whāngarei, I see so much damage caused by high sugar drinks. They have no health benefits and are a leading cause of tooth decay in children,” Dr Johnston says.

“If your children or grandchildren are thirsty, show you love them by giving them water.

“Water is the best option for good health, and it’s the cheapest also.”

Onslow, Karori cricketers top pools

Onslow and Karori cricketers topped their pools when the round robin of Cricket Wellington’s T20 competition was completed on 28 October.

After beating Hutt District and Upper Hutt on 21 October, Onslow defeated North City on Saturday.

Batting first, Onlow reached 158 for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs.

Captain Micah Conway, Nathan Robinson and Dave Hancock batted outstandingly for Onslow.

Micah top scored with 47 runs from just 34 deliveries, Nathan scored 40 from 28 balls and Dave scored 29 from the 22 balls he faced.

In reply North City reached 146 for the loss of eight wickets.

Vice-Captain Sean O’Connor bowled outstandingly, taking three wickets at a cost of just 14 runs from his four overs.

Micah also bowled well, taking two wickets for 20 runs while George Holmes took two wickets at a cost of 30 runs.

Onslow did not fare so well in the semi-final, also played on 28

October.

Eastern Suburbs scored 174 for eight wickets, beating Onslow by just six runs.

Logan Malthus looked like he might take Onslow to victory late in the match, but when he was out for 26 from just 14 balls the team’s cause was lost.

Nathan once again was in great form with the bat, scoring 63 runs from 42 deliveries, while Sam Keegan scored 33 from 20 deliveries.

Dave Hancock bowled outstandingly, taking four wickets at a cost of 19 runs from his four overs.

Karori comfortably beat Wainuiomata in the final pool match.

Batting first Wainuiomata scored 113 for the loss of three wickets in their 20 overs.

Karori took just 13 overs to overhaul that total.

Mitch Renwick batted outstandingly to finish on 66 not out from 41 balls and Alex Thompson scored 20 not out from 16 deliveries.

Matt Rowe and Jago Sperring took one wicket each for Karori.

Karori was unable to continue their winning ways in the semi-final, however, losing to Hutt District.

Improving regional resilience Significant projects to improve the region’s resilience and respond to climate change are highlighted in Greater Wellington Regional Council’s 2022/23 annual report.

Waterside Karori’s Emma Kruszona is the 2023 Women’s Central League Player of the Year.

Emma was presented her award at Capital Football’s awards ceremony at the Petone Workingmen’s Club on 27 October.

Emma was outstanding for her team, playing a major role in Waterside Karori winning this year’s Cental League championship.

“Her infectious smile and bubbly personality makes her a joy to be around both on and off the football field,” Emma’s citation says.

“Deadly in front of goal, her abilities on a football field was one piece of the puzzle that helped Waterside Karori lift the Central League Title.

“A role model to the players who played alongside her and the younger members of the side coming up through the ranks, Emma is a player young girls can learn a lot from.

“Whether its runs to make in behind the defenders, how to take your chances when they come to you and even remaining positive when things aren’t going your way, Emma is a true leader in the women’s game,” the citation says.
