First Marae-based Clinic Continued from page 1 The June 1 opening of the first marae-based COVID-19 vaccination centre in the Wellington Region is significant because a decision has been made to close the marae to all functions and events except for the COVID-19 vaccination programme until Christmas.

Which means if loved ones pass on during that time, tangi will not be held at the marae.

Kokiri Marae Health and Social Services general manager Teresea Olsen, whose team is running the vaccination programme, says Wainuiomata Marae is the largest community venue in the area so there is a logic to opening it up as the centre for everyone to come to be vaccinated.

“Culturally and spiritually, though, this is an enormous sacrifice for the benefit of others,” she says.

The other piece to this generous act is that Wainuiomata Marae will be the only COVID-19 vaccination clinic in that community so everyone will be welcomed to the marae to be vaccinated.

“In this community the marae is well-known, central, and easily accessed. There will be a warm welcome for everyone to come as first Group 3, and then Group 4 become eligible for vaccination over the coming months. People throughout the community will be contacted and invited to come in to be vaccinated in turn.”

She says Maori communities take their responsibility for pro-

viding protection seriously so this act of opening the marae venue to all is part of a hope that “everyone, our friends and whanau, and friends we have not even met yet” all have a greater level of protection from the COVID-19 virus.

Ms Olsen also says staff already have strong connections throughout the community, which she hopes will help ease any hesitancy.

“It is crucial people have both doses of the vaccination. When they come for the first time to be vaccinated, we will book them in for the second dose of the vaccination around three weeks later.

Without the second dose they will not be safe from the virus.”

“It is important any barriers to being vaccinated are removed

therefore transport is being provided for those who will find it difficult to get to the clinic. We are mindful we have elderly and disabled people in our community who may find it difficult to get to a clinic. If anyone has any concerns they should contact us or the DHB for assistance.”

The vaccination centre at Wainuiomata Marae is part of a wider Maori-led vaccination service being driven by a group of Maori Health organisations, including Hora Te Pai Health Services in Paraparaumu, Ora Toa Health Services in Porirua, Maraeroa Marae Health Clinic in Porirua, Te Rananganui o te tiawa in Lower Hutt, and Kokiri Marae Keriana Olsen Trust in Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata.

inbrief news Teacher wellbeing New research shows teacher and principal health and wellbeing much worse than the general population.

Results from NZEI Te Riu Roa’s 2020 Health and Wellbeing Survey show that workload related stress for both principals and teachers is at a level far exceeding the general population.

NZEI Te Riu Roa President Liam Rutherford says the results are unsurprising and reiterate the urgent need for more staffing resource in the sector.

Almost half of the teachers surveyed work more than 50 hours a week. Seventy percent of principals work more than 50 hours a week and one in five work more than 60. These workloads put both groups at high risk of experiencing adverse psychological and physical health outcomes.

TJ searching for her next hit

Wainuiomata based singer TJ May Crow aka Teremoana Crawford has been hard at work creating her music and searching for a new sound, following on from her winning waiata which gained 3rd place in the Rangatahi category of the ETW Song Competition in 2020.

Since the win TJ has been experimenting with sounds and genera to see what fits in her home studio along with brother Phazar.

Together they have built a following in America and are now looking to break into the Kiwi market.

One of her favourite internationl groups is BTS from Korea and the Korean vibe and got early inspiration from their songs.

“We put together a video and sent it to Aotearoa’s Most Talented and we got some really good feedback and that got around 70,000 views and that’s when we started out putting together more music,” Phazar says.

It is a family operation with

TJ’s mum Mary and dad, John all having input into the lyrics of the songs and Phazar working on the engineering side of the songs.

“We sit down and talk about what we are going to write,” TJ says.

It has been a learning curve to get the music online and Phazar says it has been all about getting the music out into the world and creating their own brand as well.

“It is big steps but we want to be able to inspire others and make music that makes someones day better and the more we push the

TJ fits in the studio work around her school work and other hobbies from writing and drawing.

Building her confidence to get her voice out there has been a big part of getting her music online and one of her goals is to stage a One Love or a large concert.

“We are working on getting a foot in the door in the New Zealand scene because we have made a lot of waves over in America but we have to get New Zealander’s behind us as well,” Phazar says.

Stop sore throats hurting young hearts We are seeing so many people IN THE PHARMACY RIGHT NOW WITH sore throats!

Thankfully most sore throats, if treated quickly, can be easily managed with lozenges, throat spray or even gargling with salt water.

If a sore throat is left untreated in children, however, it can lead to complications such as rheumatic fever, and possibly heart damage.

2HEUMATIC FEVER Most sore throats get better on their own, but if “strep throat” is not treated with antibiotics it can cause rheumatic fever in at-risk children.

Because rheumatic fever is such a serious illness, all sore throats in Maori and Pacific children and young people (aged 4 and above) need to be checked.

If your child has “strep throat”, they’ll be given antibiotics to clear up the infection before it can develop into rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever makes the heart, joints, brain and skin swollen and painful. While the symptoms of rheumatic fever

may disappear on their own, the inflammation can cause rheumatic heart disease, where there is scarring of the heart valves.

Rheumatic heart disease can be life threatening.

If your child develops rheumatic fever they will need a lot of bed rest and time off school. They’ll need to stay in hospital for weeks, where they will have examinations and blood tests to check their condition. It will be more difficult for them to play sport or to take part other activities as they will have less energy. Extending their learning and taking care of the wider environment is all part of the learning at Wainuiomata Primary School.

Looking after the schools environment is only part of the big picture for them and they recently got stuck in at the nearby Wainuiomata River to deal to the blackberry and get the area ready for replanting with natives.

Learning Coach Miriam Exley says they have talked a lot about the pollution going out to the sea and now they are looking at where the water comes from and how to protect it and

what lives there.

The area they are working on was planted out four years ago but it got overgrown and with the help of the Hutt City Council taking the rubbish away and supplying new plants the students will have an area to be proud of in the future.

Even the school caretaker got in on the job and took to the blackberry with the scrub cutter while the students cleared what had been cut.

“It has been great because we have talked about what is a native species and what is introduced and what happens with introduced species in a new environment and I am really proud of

our children they are a lovely bunch of people and they are the future of the environment,” Miriam says.

It is also a chance for the children to be involve in something positive in the environment when there are so many negative reports out there.

Student Melody Soderholm says the work is great because you can get out in the environment and they get a chance to get out of classroom work.

“It’s nice to be caring for the environment,” she says.

Next the plants will be delivered and they students will come down and do a day of planting.

inbrief news Funding boost for Māori Media The Government has an aspirational goal of one million te reo speakers by 2040, Māori broadcasting will play a significant part in helping us to achieve our goal, Minister for Māori Development Willie Jackson announced.

The Government has invested $42 million over the next 2 years, to build a sustainable Māori media sector that will continue to develop innovative local Māori media content in collaboration with independent producers, Māori Television and iwi radio stations.

Dahlia launches seven books

Wainuiomata children’s author Dahlia Malaeulu has kicked off Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa (Samoan Language Week) by launching seven stories in one hit.

Dahlia, also a Pasifika education advocate and author of Mila’s My Aganu’u series of

books says this is the first series to be written, edited, illustrated, designed and published by an all Pasifika team.

She says while she is keen to share Samoan stories with the world, a key aim of the books is to help Samoan Kiwis further grow their cultural confidence to explore and share their own stories.

“I really want readers to understand that our Samoan language, values and culture are assets – a gateway to learning more about ourselves and others. That who we are and what we know is important, and that we can proudly succeed ourselves, as Pasifika.”

inbrief news Petition for publicly-owned public transport The Green Party is launching a petition calling on the Government to remove legislative barriers to public ownership of public transport depots, vehicles and services.

“Public transport is an essential service, and it makes sense for it to be publicly owned,” Green Party spokesperson for Transport Hon Julie Anne Genter says.

“There are legislative barriers in the way of public ownership of our public transport, which means councils must contract out to private companies that prioritise profit over all else.”

Under the Land Transport Management Act, public transport must be operated as a for-profit service in order for councils to qualify for land transport funding from central government. The Green Party would change this law so that when current bus contracts expire, councils have the option to provide not-for-profit public transport services without having to give up other transport funding.

Former Wainuiomata Lions winger Tana Umaga is among four sporting greats to be inducted as Gibson Sheat Sport Legends of Wellington.

Along with golfer, Lynnette Brooky, New Zealand Paralympic swimmer, Duane Kale and weightlifter Olivia Baker, Tana will be inducted as the Gibson Sheat Sport Legends of Wellington on Wednesday 23 June at The Dominion Post Sport and Recreation Awards.

Each year since 2003, the Legends Academy of Judges has inducted up to four Sport Legends of Wellington, supported by Nuku

Ora (formerly Sport Wellington).

The inductees must be an athlete with a close allegiance to the Wellington area, be retired at least 10 years from top competition, and be acknowledged icons who have made an indelible impact on our community through their accomplishments.

A fan-favourite for the Hurricanes, Tana Umaga represented the New Zealand All Blacks from 1997-2005, playing 74 tests and being named as captain of the national side in 2004. He played for the Hurricanes from the Super 12’s inception in 1996 and played 100 matches for the Wellington Lions. Umaga was awarded New Zealand Rugby Player of the Year

Lynnette Brooky is one of New Zealand’s most successful golfers, turning professional in 1994 and spending the majority of her playing career mainly on the Ladies European Tour (LET).

She won four LET tournaments including back-to-back French Opens, and went on to win a further four in the Australian Ladies Professional Golf Tour. She also represented New Zealand in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Women’s World Cup of Golf.

Duane Kale represented New Zealand as a Paralympic swimmer who won four golds, along with a silver and bronze at the 1996 Summer Paralympics. He

was also the Chef de Mission for the New Zealand Paralympic Team at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Paralympics. In 1997 Kale was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to swimming.

New Zealand’s highest performing female weightlifter at the Commonwealth and Olympic games, Olivia Baker finished eighth in the 75+ kilograms combined category at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In 2002, she won a silver medal in the 75+ kilograms snatch and two bronze medals for the 75+ kilograms clean and jerk and the 75+ kilograms combined at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

2. In a large bowl, whisk the soup, broth and dill until blended; stir into slow cooker. Cover and cook on low until chicken and vegetables are tender, about 4 hours.

3. Stir in peas and cream. Cover and cook until heated through, about 30 minutes longer.

Metlink’s rail operator Transdev Wellington is seeing a growing diversity within the team, with women staff numbers soaring higher than the Australasian average in the rail industry.

Only ten years ago, the stats for women working in the rail industry were dire, but things are changing in our region. According to Transdev Wellington’s internal annual survey, the spread of staff shifted from 69% men and 31% women in 2016, to 65% men and 35% women in 2020.

Metlink Operations Manager, Melissa Anderson says these results are well above the wider Australasian rail industry rate which sits at 27% women, according to the latest Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Gender Diversity Report 2019.

“It’s really affirming to see that more women of all ages are seeking roles and jobs in an industry previously dominated by men,” she says.

Transdev Wellington General Manager of People and Culture, Emma MacRae, says

the number of women working at Transdev Wellington is currently rising by 1% per year, and this number is expected to grow.

“In 2020, we saw the number of women locomotive engineers rise to an all-time high of 11%, up from 7.8% in 2019, and across roles women team leaders increased from 33% to 38%.”

The increasing number of women recruits is supported by a high retention rate.

“We are so proud of the diverse gender, age, and culture spread across all our staff. At Transdev Wellington we support and celebrate a space where people feel safe, valued and respected regardless of age, gender identity, sexual orientation or cultural background,” Emma says.

In addition, the survey captured that almost half of the Transdev Wellington workforce identifies as an ethnic group other than European, with the next biggest group being Maori or Pacific Islander at 19.5, 7.8% identify as Indian and 1.7% as other Asian.

Many home gardeners look forward to June, knowing the shortest day -and the longest night -- will come and go and the garden will be heading into spring.

It’s a bit of anomaly when you think about it. June is the first month of winter yet it is the month that logically should be in the middle of winter having the shortest day.

So wise gardeners will get as much done as possible while the weather permits. Digging, for instance.

All vacant land should be turned over and left rough for frosts.

Liming, for instance. Lime is absorbed best during cold weather.

Seed sowing applies particularly to gardeners who have a glasshouse, or even a glassed-in verandah or a conservatory.

One of the best aids available

is the horticultural heating pad, thermostatically controlled to about 20deg C. Sowing seeds in shallow trays on one of these will guarantee germination, ven of species which normally will not germinate until the soil heats up in spring, like tomatoes.

Tender species -- like tomatoes -- will still need to be kept on the heating pad in case of June frosts, but may need to be lifted just above the pad with small, about 1cm to 2cm, wooden spacers in July and August, to prevent overheating at midday.

The young plants should be sprayed with Vaporgard also to protect them against frost and chills while in the glasshouse. They should be sprayed again with the same product prior to transplanting or moving outdoors.

The sun can get quite warm for an

hour or two after noon.

In fact, plants on a heating pad can still get quite warm on a sunny day in June, so be careful with the watering.

Make sure the mix does not dry out.

Here are a few prompts for things to do this month: * Gardeners should now prepare a bed for shallots, which should be planted on the shortest day. * Gardeners with glasshouses should flood the beds now to get the soil ready for planting later on. * Make sure the glass is clean to allow the maximum amount of light and warmth through.

Brush with soapy water and rinse. * Compost heaps which are slow to heat in cold weather can be given a hurry along with a proprietary compost starter such as Thatch Busta.

Teaching rewarding exhausting

First year teacher at Arakura School David Laidler couldn’t be happier with his choice of vocation and even though it is exhausting and the work load is large it is fulfilling.

Prior to teaching David spent around six years at university, wrote a thesis, worked for a telecommunications company, but the yearning to do more with his life saw him eventually train as a teacher.

“Arguably I spent far too long at university and did a masters degree in musicology and had vague aspirations of being an academic but at the conclusion of the thesis I realised it wasn’t for me,” he says.

“Musicology is basically music in context, looking at history, politics or sociology through the lens of music it is a complex field, I enjoyed the mental challenge and the learning and study.”

Following on from university he was given the opportunity to work for a telecommunications company in Auckland and decided to take up the offer.

And then a shift back to Wellington and marriage got him wondering about a career and teaching presented itself as a way to make an impact on young children’s lives.

“With what I am doing now I feel like it does take a lot of energy and takes a lot out of you but the mahi that I am putting in has a much bigger impact than what I was doing previously,” David says.

He undertook a years training in 2020 and says the nature of the job is you are always learning.

“Teaching is like anything it is evolving and there are new theories on the way to teach maths and literacy and you have to keep up with that,”he says.

One of the best things he finds at Arakura School is that he is well supported by the other staff and if help is ever needed there is always someone on hand to help.

He is teaching year five and six at Arakura and finds it a fun age group

to teach.

The work load he says is mountainous but hopes as he gets the first year out of the way things will get easier.

“I leave at the end of every day absolutely shattered but at the same time it is a deeply satisfying sense of exhaustion and you see the kids growing and progressing. It is so rewarding and I love it I am glad I took the plunge,” David says.

After three rounds of grading, the College Sport Wellington Championship Collegiate netball competition started proper on Saturday 29 May 2021. Games are played at either Taita College or Hutt High School on Saturdays. The Wainuiomata High School Junior 2 team graded at Collegiate 9 and had their first outing against St Oran’s College at Hutt High School. It was a tightly fought match

with Wainuiomata High School ending up victorious winning 14-12. “We improved on our footwork which is what we practised at training, so happy about that. But we still have lots to work on,” says captain, Shaelyn Kilburn. The competition has a bye this weekend due to Queen’s Birthday weekend.

WHS Junior 2 play Heretaunga College at 11:00am on Saturday 12 June 2021.

Nothing super about current rugby product The Super Rugby Australasia concept is dead already.

After just three weeks, Aussie teams were 1-14 and it took ill discipline from the Chiefs to help the Reds get at least one win on the board.

It means an all-Kiwi final was on the menu with three weeks of games still to go.

The teams from across the ditch have been flogged in almost every game making the prospect of multiple Kiwi teams going unbeaten

over the five weeks highly likely.

That means that an unbeaten team could miss the final which is laughable in its on right.

Yes, the top two qualify, but it’s highly likely three teams could be unbeaten with one more than a little unlucky to miss out.

The product is poor, many of the games are heavy on whistle and TMO involvement.

Reset scrums and replays for potential foul play stifle the flow of most games which irritates

everyone except Sky commentator and referee wannabe Kane Hames who can’t stop talking about the officials.

The people have also given their thumbs down to the product.

When the Brumbies played the Chiefs in Hamilton, the crowd was just over 10,000.

When the Reds went to Dunedin the week after they were crowned Super Rugby AU champions, fewer than 11,000 locals could be persuaded to attend.

The competition is not capturing the attention of Kiwi fans.

Australia does not have the depth to support five teams.

Truly less is more with the Aussies, when they had three teams at the start of the Super 12 concept, they were able to concentrate their talent and be highly competitive.

The Waratahs are horrendous for some unknown reason and the Rebels and Force are full of names from yester-year like Jeremy Thrush and Richard Kahui.

The odds are forming that the Aussie teams will lose every game of this competition.

You can get $7 for the bet in Australia.

Yes, there’s a global pandemic but this is not a product worth investing in at its current stage.

Congratulations to whoever will end up winning it but the Crusaders won Super Rugby Aotearoa and that’s the alpha competition, not this version which is at best uninspiring.

Halfbaked takes Tawa

It was another eventful and busy day down at Richard Prouse Park.

The two earlier games saw Halfbaked host Tawa and the Reserves host Greytown - both sides made full use of the home advantage.

Halfbaked walked away big winners against Tawa thanks to 4 goals from star striker Cam Blake. The Reserves bounced back from last week’s defeat with a gutsy performance to walk away 3-2 winners.

The two late games were between the Masters 6 side the OC’s and a big Central League clash given the context of the season for both sides.

The OC’s managed to maintain their current form and were able to keep a clean sheet and walk away with the all important 3 points.

The Central League game against Petone was a 6 goal thriller but it was the away side who came out on top. Despite coming from behind twice, Wainuiomata failed to earn their first points of the season.

Elsewhere Roundball were able to walk away with a point while The

Fiddick’s succumbed to another defeat at the hands of Naenae. Both Pacifica teams walked away with maximum points with the Masters 3 team winning a 7 goal thriller while the Masters 6 side won their game more comfortably, running riot scoring 7 goals in a game that had 9 goals. The Undertakers had their chances to win their game but could only settle for a point against Upper Hutt.

Sunday saw the Under 17’ travel to Porirua while the Women’s side travelled to Newtown. While it was a tough day at the office for our Women’s side, the Under 17’s made it two wins in two weeks. In a game that saw Taj Singh make a penalty save on his debut in goal, everything seemed to go right for the boys as they walked away 4-1 winners.

Queen’s birthday weekend is going to be another entertaining weekend as Halfbaked face Lower Hutt in a top of the table clash as part of the Lower Hutt Centenary weekend. Also part of that weekend, our 13th Grade

Premier team play the curtain raiser on Friday night to the Lower Hutt Central League game. Ulalei make light work Ulalei Pua made light work of another comprehensive win against St Oran’s Club on Saturday. They are now sitting second equal with NNCU White behind unbeaten leaders Wellington Men’s, while Ulalei Aute are yet to secure any points this round.

The young guns Ulalei Fuesina remained in good spirits despite a huge loss against Dynamic Netball’s top team. “We are still finding our feet and getting to know how each other plays,” says captain Faim Tamaalii. Coach Karina Sagaga added, “We knew this grade would be tough especially with the number of experienced teams that have played together for years. Our youngsters Drew McLeod, Janique Tewiki-Mu, and Lagi Smith-Saleupolu are enjoying the opportunity playing against adults that will only
