“The trick of a pantomime is that it’s always brand new for every show and we have to roll with what is in the news at the time,” Gavin says.

The duo say they both have natural on-stage chemistry with each other and both are eager to embrace the fairytale while putting their own spin on it.

“I grew up with Cinderella and loved it so this is our take on it, a Kiwi version if you will,” Natasha says.

“We tend to add a little Muppets to our Circa pantomimes,” Gavin says.

“It is Cinderella but not as you know it.”

After completing her studies in Musical Theatre, Natasha moved to London and was soon cast as Amber von Tussle in ‘Hairspray’ and The Mad Hatter in the Pantomime ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

Since being back in New Zealand, Natasha has been seen in ‘Monster Songs’ at Bats Theatre, as Chris Hargenson in

‘Carrie’ the musical, and as Alice in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ at Circa Theatre.

Gavin is treasurer of the Circa Council at Circa Theatre and he has been the “Dame” in the successful pantomimes at Circa for over a decade.

Gavin plays Dame Rosie Bubble opposite Natasha’s portrayal of Cinderella in the performance and says playing a female character at various points over the past 10 years has been fun.

“The boat has been well and truly pushed out beyond the harbour and is somewhere in the Tasman Sea at this point,” he says “Audiences get to join in on the fun and participate,” Natasha says.

“There’s some sweetness there and you’ll leave laughing.” Natasha says “The show works on a lot of levels from grandparents to children so there really is something for everyone and we know that audiences will be entertained by what we put out there,” Gavin says.

The show’s season runs from November 14 to January 16.

Brian Sheppard honoured for “iconic” work

For Brian Sheppard, immediate past president of the Churton Park Community Association Tuesday October 20 was a special day.

He was one of 18 people who received this year’s Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Awards for his work in creating ties of friendship and understanding in what has been described as New Zealand’s most multi-cultural suburb.

The Churton Park group he has headed represents some 28 different cultures and languages.

Wellington city councillor Malcolm Sparrow, who in-

troduced Brian, described him as “the model leader of a residents’ association,” someone who had organised many iconic events for the CPCA. These have included a local multicultural fair, their annual children’s Christmas party, a Diwali celebration, and Christmas carols, much of this work done with the support of his wife Lee, who also organised the Churton Park Craft Fair.

Brian said his role had been to bring together many different points of view, early on realising he needed to offer ways to remove barriers “and celebrate our diverse community”.

He spoke of the effect

the Christchurch massacre had had and the way he and community adviser Mai Mostafa.had planned a series of functions, with sharing of food and understanding, called ‘We Are One’. These events had, said Brian, showed that we all share Kiwi values and aspirations.

The first demonstrated Moslem values and protocols, and the series was so successful that the idea was repeated in other Wellington suburbs.

Brian, a keen photographer, has recorded much of his work in his home suburb, as well as elsewhere in the pages of the Independent Herald.

The hero of New Zealand’s Covid-19 campaign, Director General of Health and CE of the Ministry of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield was one of those honoured at the Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Awards on the night of Tuesday October 20.

Mayor Andy Foster said that while the awards recognised the charitable and voluntary contributions of Wellingtonians “it would be remiss of council not to acknowledge Dr Bloomfield’s outstanding leadership and reassuring advice”.

Ever modest, Ashley agreed he didn’t really qualify, both because he lives in the Hutt and, he said, because “I was just doing my job”. He did point out though, that originally, he was a

Tawa boy.

He stressed that one key message of the campaign, “Be kind” was not his idea. “But it was a masterstroke.

“There is so much we can’t control, but we can control our behaviour.”

As well as Brian Sheppard, a number of northern and western suburbs residents were honoured.

Brian was, for example, followed on to the City Gallery’s stage by David Zwartz of Kelburn, who had led the Jewish ‘We are One” event at Churton Park.

Like Brian, David was also honoured for his efforts to bring people together in such organisations as the multi-faith council.

And in his acceptance speech, he described Wellington as a ‘City of Kindness’.

He is famous for greeting newcomers, running groups which weed and trim nation’s reserves, as well as planting hundreds of trees in the area.

Des shared his latest dream, of creating a native plant corridor right along the Johnsonville railway line, creating a tourist route accompanied by a map detailing walks and local cafes. It would also be a daily dose of nature for commuters.

Other local residents honoured included Richard Hawke and Carole Wilson, of the 1st Karori Scout Troop, the second biggest in the country. They were described

as outstanding leaders, mentors and role models to countless young Wellingtonians.

The deputy principal at Newlands Intermediate, Lena Meinders, was honoured for several of her roles. The chair of the Nga Hau e Wha O Papararangi marae, she was also recognised for her work with kapa haka, her support for the disadvantaged and for northern suburbs sports teams.

Honours were also presented to members of the Rainbow community from the south, east and CBD and they provided colourful and thought-provoking contributions to diversity, Mayor Andy Foster concluded the evening by emphasising the core values that have made a huge difference to Wellington.

“Diversity. And the message of kindness.”

Metlink is moving forward with amendments to its advertising policy to better reflect the community it serves.

Metlink general manager, Scott Gallacher says the changes, as part of Metlink’s normal review processes, were a chance to do the right thing for the region.

Bike Fest a success ‘Ka mau te wehi!’ - is the sentiment as Greater Welly Bike Fest celebrates over 600 participants across the region with prizes and giveaways.

October’s Kia Eke Paihikara Tātou Greater Welly Bike Fest gets hapori whānui (the wider community) out on their bikes to make the most of their regional backyard and explore sustainable forms of transport.

“We’ve had a great turn out at our events regionwide! The family days were a big hit, with Carterton showing us how it’s done with over 200 people joining us.” says Amelia Wilkins, Greater Wellington Regional Council Travel Choice Co-ordinator.

Karori Book Fair set for next month

It’s all on again, the Karori Community Book Fair delayed because of covid 19 will be held on November 13 and 14.

Thousands of books in all readership categories will be available to purchase at cheap prices, with proceeds from the event going to Lions and Rotary community projects.

The Fair opens at the Karori Baptist Church Hall, Marsden Village, on Friday November 13 from noon until 8pm and on Saturday November 14 from 9am to 4pm.

EFTPOS facilities are available.

People can also go into a draw with purchases in total over $25 for some wonderful prizes donated by business houses in Karori. The draw will be made at the end of the Fair on Saturday afternoon.

Alex Moore Park upgrade continues

Progress continues towards an early 2021 completion of the upgrade at Alex Moore Park Drainage installation, the pouring of ground beams, work on the walls and electrical trenching are all currently underway.

The estimated completion date is now February 2021, three months later than scheduled.

Demolition of the Olympic Harriers and Athletic Club building as well as the Johnsonville Cricket Club building is complete.

Wellington City Council has partnered with the Alex Moore Park Sport and Community Incorporated Society (AMPSCI), which

represents six local clubs that will see the establishment of a sport, community and recreational hub.

The project has a price tag of $4.2million, with the incorporated society contributing $2million towards building cost. The Hub building will be owned by the Council and managed by AMPSCI, which will enter into a long-term lease of the upper facilities over the next 33 years.

The Council is project managing construction, with AMPSCI coordinating and managing the input, feedback and decision-making from member clubs, as well fundraising for AMPSCI’s share of the project.

St Mark’s got talent The search for talent was on last week at St Mark’s School.

Modelled on the famous TV show “Britain’s Got Talent”, the St Mark’s students showcased their incredible range of talents for the whole school and parent community last Friday.

Judges Kate Hiatt and Rachel Steel really had their work cut out as they assessed the students, who were dressed to impress and ready to entertain the school community. The line-up included rock stars, jazz dancers, comedy acts, classical musicians and more.

Wellington gets a pass mark in recycling survey In a recent survey, Wellington city residents got a good report card on their recycling knowledge – but we could all do a bit better.

The Colmar Brunton Waste Minz survey shows 93% of Wellingtonians recycle and 87% believe it’s worth taking the time to recycle right, higher than the national average.

We also get top marks for remembering to rinse before we recycle, but we can be guilty of ‘wishcycling’ – recycling things we’re unsure of and hoping for the best.

On average, Wellington residents are getting 2 out of 3 things right, with some common misconceptions that lead to contamination like any plastic material and any paper can be recycled, compostable equals recyclable, and that lids and caps will be removed at the sorting plant.

Based on the insights from this survey, there is a clear opportunity to improve recycling knowledge and sorting behaviours, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“Wellington city respondents are more likely to err on the side of caution if they are unsure of whether an item is recyclable or not, and place it in the rubbish (68%) rather than the recycling (32%). This is the right action, as it reduces recycling contamination – if in doubt, throw it out!

“Almost all Wellington city respondents rinse items, but fewer remove lids which is unfortunate as some lids are separately recyclable. We need to take some personal

accountability and challenge behaviours like thinking it’s fine to put a few incorrect items into the recycling because it will be separated and cleaned at the recycling sorting centre.

That takes up people’s time and costs all of us money.”

While this study found the majority agree recycling is important, uncertainty about what can or can’t be recycled is affecting the outcomes, says Councillor Laurie Foon, Waste Free Wellington portfolio lead.

“There is a huge amount of information available about recycling, and we work hard to ensure our messaging is correct and easily accessible, but there are still a number of common items that trip people up.

“For instance, we get a lot of questions about whether takeaway coffee cups are recyclable or compostable by Wellington City Council’s collection services. The answer is neither – all takeaway coffee cups must go in the general rubbish destined for landfill.

“We recommend sitting in your favourite café to enjoy your coffee, or using keep cups or cup reuse systems like Again Again to reduce the millions of single-use coffee cups ending up in the country’s landfills.

“While we encourage recycling correctly, the ultimate goal is to not need to do it at all, so we need to work collectively to reduce the amount of recyclable items we buy, and influence the manufacturers to provide alternative solutions like refilling and reusing.”

Friendship Club learns about inspiring work in Bougainville

At their October meeting, members of the Friendship Club of Johnsonville learned about one of the many aid programmes run by the New Zealand Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA).

Liz Hicks, a very experienced aid worker, talked about her most recent overseas assign-

ment, working with Sister Lorraine Garasu in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

Sister Lorraine is a member of the Sisters of Nazareth and leader of the Nazareth Rehabilitation Centre for victims of domestic violence.

She is a formidable woman who has achieved much under difficult circumstances in a country still healing from the civil war

that ended 20 years ago.

Liz’s role was to help the Sisters develop plans and processes for leadership skills programmes that they could then implement.

It was very much a skills transfer process, which was mutually satisfying. Liz brought along examples of basket and fabric weaving by women in Bougainville.

Bands get support from Council Council helps the bands play on in the capital With 20,000 gigs cancelled around Aotearoa during COVID-19 restrictions, Wellington City Council’s support of local independent music venues and talent has helped the bands play on.

San Fran, Meow, Rogue & Vagabond, and Valhalla were given funding to help keep their doors open while physical distancing requirements were in place – and their recent reports back show this support was hugely appreciated by the venues and audiences.

With social distancing restrictions in place, independent music venues in the city were struggling, so Wellington City Council stepped in to offer a helping hand, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“Music venues don’t have the turnover of multiple patrons over one night like bars and restaurants, and they and the musicians rely heavily on door takings which was seriously impacted during the transitioning alert levels.

“As these venues are self-sustaining for the most part, council officers worked to understand their business models and each venue’s specific issues and costs to allocate the compensation.

“We’re so pleased to see all the venues achieved the targets outlined in their funding agreements, which included specific numbers

of events and audience numbers.”

The grants to support independent music venues was redirected from the 2019/20 venue subsidy – funding that would normally be used to help arts and community groups access Council venues but wasn’t spent due to the lockdown.

Council granted $25,000 to San Fran, $25,000 to Meow, $10,000 to Rogue & Vagabond, and $7,000 to Valhalla, to help with overhead costs and to support live events and local artists post lockdown.

Valhalla venue owner Ben Mulchin says he is happy to report on the good results thanks to Council’s support.

“Certainly having WCC social media help and the fact everyone wanted to party post COVID-19, we got well over 350 people attending all the events combined.

“All acts and artists were extremely happy to get paid, and have followed up with future bookings so the good vibes keep spreading.

“Overall, I believe this funding not only gave the six sold out shows a bigger profile but also increased interest in booking and playing shows. Very useful – thanks guys,” he adds.

Ngaio Crofton Downs Photo Competition The Ngaio Crofton Downs Residents Association (NCDRA) is running a photo competition in the suburbs Ian Turk, the Association’s Chairman, says entries are welcome from anyone but they must have been taken in Ngaio-Crofton Downs.

“They can be of anything you like” he explained, “You can send in as many entries as you wish, by email to photo@ngaio.org.nz.

Either take photos especially or choose from your collection. Our judge, Ngaio photographer Colin McDiarmid, will sort them into three categories – landscapes, things and people. Then he’ll choose a prize winner from each section.”

“We think Ngaio-Crofton Downs is a great area in which to live and we know that a photo competition like this will publicise the features and the quality of life to be found here. We hope many people will enter.”

By Jacob Page Johnsonville Bowling Club duo Brady Amer and Dale Rayner celebrate after securing a place in the mixed pairs 2-4-2 final on the last end of their semi-final over the weekend.

Johnsonville Bowling Club’s Dale Rayner and Brady Amer have made the final of the Bowls Specialists Mixed 2-4-2 pairs competition.

The duo are awaiting to see who they will play in the decider with the last semi-final and final to be played at a later date due to bad weather over the three day tournament.

They met Kennie and Steve Critchlow in their semi-final and on the last end of a tight game they needed a three to secure their place in the final.

Dale had the last bowl, and the head didn’t look promising, but she played an exceptional shot to get the three.

On their way to the semi, in the last eight Dale and Brady had to beat the well-performing pair of Gareth and Cynthia Evans – who, in turn, had defeated Lock Chin and Kris Haines in the previous round. Also performing well and reaching the last eight were Wayne Coleman and Christine Hyett.

Past winner, Kaaren Guilford and up and coming Adam Ryan reached the last sixteen as did Tannith Potgieter, teaming with another young talent, Euan Wong (Stokes Valley).

The second semi-final will be between Craig Merrilees and Clare Hendra (Silverstream); and Nigel Musgrove and Kay Okeroa (Hutt).

GARDENING THIS WEEK After Labour weekend garden prep: By Wally Richards With Labour Weekend having just been there will be more New Zealanders working away in their gardens than we have seen before, for many a long year. The reason for this is several, lockdowns, financial and health.

The cost of vegetables and fruit purchased, will keep going up in price, otherwise the commercial growers will be out of business, as their chemical fertilisers and sprays prices are escalating out of sight.

Compound this with transport costs and we shall see many food lines slipping out of the reach of most people on a tighter budget. We all need to become more self-sufficient and look after our own health by growing and eating good wholesome fruit and vegetables which is home grown.

Garden centre owners have reported fantastic increases in the sale of vegetable seeds and plants along with fruit trees and herbs. You do not even need a garden to grow vegetables and fruit trees as you can grow lots of things in containers. I have written about this before and by using pots, buckets, polystyrene boxes and plastic rubbish tins (these are for fruit trees).

For instance you all know about growing a spud in a bucket. To grow in containers all you need to do is purchase a few bags of compost, some sheep manure pellets, maybe a bag of blood & bone and add these to the compost and plant up seeds or seedlings.

You can increase the goodness of the food by adding mineral rich products such as Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) and Ocean Solids.

You don’t even have to use a lot of the sheep manure pellets, blood & bone and Ocean Solid as a little placed in the planting hole will do nicely.

After which you can spray the foliage of the plants with the MBL twice weekly. For those that have a nice sunny area where a vegetable garden could be started you don’t even have to do any digging. Mow down as low as possible any grass or weeds in the area. Make a surround that is at least 200mm tall (the taller the better.) If using treated timber cut the wood to the required size and paint all surfaces with acrylic paint giving a couple of coats to seal in the chemicals.

The garden should only be about a metre wide so that you can work from the sides and never have to walk on it. When your surround is in place for the raised garden cover the bottom with cardboard or several sheets of newspaper.

Over this throw in grass clippings, food scraps, animal manures, prunings, leaves and anything organic including homemade compost and spent potting mix from old containers. This will cheaply build up the base of the raised garden.

When you have a layer about half full then sprinkle a good dose of garden lime over the material.

Next layer another lot of wet

You do not even need a garden to grow vegetables and fruit trees as you can grow lots of things in containers.

If you have animal manure such as chicken, cow or horse this can be incorporated into the top layer for extra goodness. Finish off the top few centimeters with purchased compost. (This will be weed free) Now you are ready to plant up as suggested with sheep pellets etc.

Corrugated iron with fence posts is ideal for a taller raised garden as the heat from the sun will warm the growing medium and speed up

plant growth. A little more expense but well worth it in the long run.

What we have achieved from the above is a weed free garden (at the beginning anyway) with the cardboard or newspaper initially suppressing any weeds from coming through from below. Worms love newspaper and cardboard so they will be attracted to your raised garden and provide further nutrients and keep the soil open.

With buying seeds look for the cheaper seeds as these are likely to

be open pollinated ones which will give you better crops. The more expensive hybrid seeds are not so good as they have been bred in most cases to grow in a chemical environment. Some will actually fail in a natural soil. Labour Weekend is the traditional time to plant up gardens in New Zealand and an ideal time to get started for both new and experienced gardeners (the later would already be well underway).

Event director Evelyn Williamson says the February 28 event is about encouraging women to challenge themselves but also getting them active in a supportive environment.

PROTECTING YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH We know when our children are sick, they go from being active and alert to quiet, grumpy, sleepy, clingy and wanting more cuddles.

Often they lose interest in food.

The most common general signs of illness are fever, pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, headache and rash. Fever (body temperature above 37°C) indicates that the body is ‘fighting’ infection from either bacteria or viruses.

Children’s natural defence mechanisms are less well-developed than adults’ immune systems, so children are at higher risk of infections.

Fever accompanied by cough, runny or blocked nose and headache can signify the common cold.

“Ask us about our Children’s Pain & Fever fact card”, recommend Self Care pharmacists, “because this has a lot of helpful hints for looking after sick children. Also it indicates what other signs to look out for in children that indicate more serious illnesses.”

Keeping your child comfortable in bed, giving plenty of fluids, and using liquid medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce fever, are best when your child has a cold.

“But” advice from Self Care pharmacists is “use proper medicine-measuring spoons when

measuring-out doses of liquid medicines. Don’t use kitchen teaspoons because they are not accurate, the volume varies from spoon to spoon, and your child will not receive the correct dose of medicine.”

It is important to look out for sore throats in children as it can lead to Rheumatic Fever. This is a serious illness that affects mainly Maori and Pacific children and young people, aged four and above.

Sore throats generally clear up by themselves but “strep” sore throats can lead to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease which can be life threatening. It is important to check up children with sore throats so if they do have a “strep” sore throat they can be treated with antibiotics and stop the illness progressing any further.

If you are unsure then get in touch with your pharmacist, doctor or nurse.

Parents can encourage their children to take simple steps to help prevent the spread of some illnesses.

Children should cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze and cough, and then wash their hands straight after. Washing hands is also VERY important

Kapiti Arts Trail’s twenty-year journey Ka-piti is gearing up for the District’s iconic annual art event in November, with over 100 artists signed up to show their artworks.

Held over the weekends of the 7/8 and 14/15 of November, this year will be particularly special as it marks the popular event’s twentieth anniversary.

The Ka-piti Arts Trail began in 2001, and with the support of local artists and the Ka-piti Coast District Council has grown into a highlight on the national arts calendar. From a humble 26 venues to visit in the early years of the Trail, this year 67 artists will open their studio doors.

Artists are also showcasing their work in galleries, hubs and guilds.

A new addition to the Arts Trail is the chance

to see four pop-up ‘index exhibitions’ across the district, which give visitors a taste of a number of artists’ works before exploring their studios.

Kapiti Coast District deputy mayor and arts portfolio holder Janet Holborow says this year will also feel different because of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts on the art community.

“Many artists have used their art to respond to the pandemic, and found new ways of expressing themselves and the challenges of this year,” says Ms Holborow.

“The Arts Trail gives visitors the opportunity to see and hear these stories in person which makes it an incredibly important event for our local artists and for our cultural recovery.

Jenny Turnbull – artist with a varied artistic background In her early years Jennifer Turnbull was always drawn towards the arts.

After secondary school she studied cookery at the Cordon Bleu School in Auckand then dressmaking and fashion design, working for a period on theatre, making costumes at the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Mercury Theatre.

In 1988 Jennifer moved to Dunedin to study for three years at Otago School of Fine Arts for a Diploma of Fine Arts majoring in ceramics with Michael Trumic, Neil Grant and Lawrence Ewing as tutors along with many visiting overseas and NZ potters.

Storm surge flattens Penrith The NRL final was a classic cliche of a game of two halves.

The Penrith Panthers were the best team all year, winning 17 in a row on the way to the final, but against the Melbourne Storm on Sunday night, they were simply blown off the park in the first half and eventually fell 26-20 after a spirited but doomed comeback.

Ivan Cleary’s men made too many errors and if they did not have bad luck, they would have had no luck at all.

The contest was also a reminder of that intangible element called scoreboard pressure.

As Melbourne’s lead stretched to 10 and then 16 in the first half, the men from the Blue Mountains started to push their passes and continued to help dig their own demise.

Nathan Cleary, such a star for Penrith all season, had an absolute Betty Crocker, which included Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen stepping him untouched on his way to a 70m try just after halftime.

It was a limp ending for a team which had been the standard bearer through this Covid-affected season.

Ultimately, the Storm rode their luck and simply suffocated their less-experienced opponents.

If there is a positive Warriors note in terms of the Panthers season, it’s that Phil Gould, who couldn’t hide his bias throughout the game, was a key architect in creating the squad which was a rebuild job.

Gould will work with the Warriors in 2021. The Storm are a profes-

sional unit.

The North Wellington men’s under 19 football team finished runners-up at the Lotto Labour Weekend tournament in Napier.

The team finished their final tied 1-1 against Waiarapa United after a tough 60 minutes, North Wellington’s goal was scored by Jesse Randall.

They went straight into penalties and unfortunately lost 5-3.

The result means they will go through to the main draw next year with Randall winning the Golden Boot for the top-scorer in the tournament.

The team earned a finals spot with a 3-0 semifinal win over Napier City Rovers.

All three goals came in extra time.

A Randall hat-trick earned North Wellington a 3-1 quarter-final win over Otumoetai.

The under-19 women’s team made the semifinals of their tournament.

They had a 2-0 win over Hibiscus Coast thanks to a goal from Olivia Ingham and an own goal.

They also beat Melville 2-0 with goals from Lara Smith and Jade Heather.

A 0-0 draw against Petone was enough for them to make the last four against Hamilton Wanderers where they lost 8-0.

The Panthers first try was clearly an obstruction.

Rugby League is a delightfully simple game often made confusing by video referee decisions.

The slow play of the balls from the team, protecting a lead late in the game, is another blight on the game which needs to be rectified.

Certainly not the tight tussle many were hoping for but it is hard to begrudge the Storm their victory.

They’re clinical and ruthless when the lights are at their brightest.

The North Wellington under-19 football team finished runners-up at the Lotto youth tournament in Napier. The North Wellington under-19 women’s team made their semi-finals at the same venue.

Johnsonville’s premier cricket team did not put enough runs on the board during their opening game of the season against Taita District.

Johnsonville lost by eight wickets on an artificial pitch at Alex Moore Park.

The team was unable to make the most of a good opening partnership of 60 and were eventually dismissed for 170.

Opener Scott Mudgway got a quick-fire 30 off 17 balls but captain Rakitha Weerasundara says they failed to capitalise on the start.
