Vaccinations rewarded Continued from page 1 Iphones, grocery vouchers and back packs with bathroom products and a bag of apples were on offer to all comers over the long weekend which saw queues of locals of all ages forming at the Marae to get their vaccinations.

Hot sausages and bread were on offer and Karen Tutaki says a similar event held in Naenae over the weekend had 99 locals getting their vaccinations.

And the whole community is benefitting from this initiative being driven by Kokiri Marae with more support becoming available.

Added to the work already being done the government has announced $120 million fund to accelerate Maori vaccination rates and support communities to prepare for the implementation of the new COVID-19 Protection Framework.

The new Maori Communities COVID-19 Fund will directly fund Maori, Iwi, community organisations and providers to deliver local vaccination initiatives for whanau, and support Maori and communities to prepare for the new protection framework.

The fund will assist in reaching Maori not yet vaccinated including rangatahi, whanau without permanent housing,

whanau in rural and remote locations, and whanau not well connected to health services.

Local Iwi, Maori organisations and providers are best placed to reach and support these groups.

Half will go towards accelerating Maori vaccination rates, while the remaining $60 million will support Maori and iwi-led initiatives to protect their communities against COVID-19.

Phase two of the fund($60m) will support iwi and Maoriled and community-designed preparedness initiatives, to build and adapt community social infrastructure for the new framework, drawing on existing iwi pandemic response plan and community resilience initiatives. Examples of activities that might be funded include support for testing and other public health measures under the new framework; community outreach and mobilisation of resources to support rapid responses to any outbreak; support for diagnosis and homeisolation.

“While more Maori have been vaccinated in recent weeks, Maori are still lagging behind most New Zealanders, particularly in the younger age groups,” Associate Minister for Health (Maori Health), Peeni Henare says.

“We need to pull out all the stops to ensure whanau are protected when the new protection framework is put in place.

We know the recent lift in vaccination rates is the direct result of funding Maori providers and of Maori leadership efforts at a regional and national level. We need this to continue.

“From hangi and vouchers, walk-in clinics and vax buses, partnerships with iwi, local

communities and businesses, communities going door-todoor, vaccinations on sports fields and at kura and many more initiatives – we’ve seen what works and this fund will support more of it,” Phase Two funding will be available in early November, so that a first tranche of proposals can be underway before the end of the year.

Working with nature by allowing rivers natural movement is among the key points from Greater Wellington’s updated climate change flood protection policy put before Greater Wellington’s Climate Committee.

While the policy strongly advocates for this important work to be updated in line with the latest guidance and build on the work already being done, some of its resulting actions are in unchartered waters of innovation for the council Graeme Campbell, Greater Wellington Manager, Flood Protection says.

“I’m buoyed by the innovative developments this will bring to flood protection projects, communities and the environment as well has how it can be used when considering landslide and coastal inundation risk”.

It will allow us to build stop banks that are adaptable to future change, take more consideration in where new buildings are located and critically, find a balance between dependable protection for homes and businesses while giving the rivers room to move naturally”.

He says through the Flood Hazard Modelling Standard, a bespoke set of modelled scenarios relating to climate change, and ultimately into cities’ district plans the future benefit of the policy is shown.

“New developments that fall into flood risk areas will be identified prior to construction and any changes in flood vulnerability to existing areas will be assessed with the changing climate in mind” The new approach responds to the latest guidance from the Ministry for the Environ-

ment which reveal a projected increase in climate change driven rainfall of between 20 to 30% by 2120 in some catchments, the new basis for planning for increased rainfall.

Greater Wellington Councillor and Deputy Chair of the Climate Change Committee, Ros Connelly says “it’s a stark reminder of the ever-growing risk we face from climate change.

Ros says the recent example of the eroded banks of Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt River due to severe weather and rainfall earlier in July is a key driver for action.

“It bolsters the decision to include climate change planning and the work done will ultimately contribute to safeguarding our communities from these unpredictable, volatile events”.

Peonies for mental health By: Gerald Rillstone Flower lovers rejoice – it’s Peony blooming time again and for the second year running these revered blooms – long known to symbolise compassion – are the floral heroes of a special fundraising campaign, Peonies with a Purpose.

Each bouquet or bunch of Peonies purchased between October 18 - November 14 at participating retailers will see $1 donated to the Mental Health Foundation (MHF), to assist the charity in nurturing the mental health and wellbeing of the 580,000 Kiwis who will need its help this year.

After 18 months of living with the challenges of COVID-19, many Kiwis have battle fatigue as the pandemic rolls on. According to a recent

Ipsos study commissioned by MHF, 25% of all New Zealanders currently have poor levels of mental and emotional wellbeing.

While there’s hardship in the community, sometimes it’s hard to know how to help.

That’s where Peonies with a Purpose comes in. As a charitable collaboration between Feel Good With Flowers and the NZ Paeony Society this campaign has at its heart, spreading joy and kindness, and as its purpose, supporting mental health.

COVID-19 has been one of the biggest challenges to our collective mental health in several generations, according to Shaun Robinson, chief executive, Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. “Kiwis by and large have faced this challenge by looking after each other and getting through it together,”

he says.

“The ongoing pandemic is tough on us all and demand for our resources remains high as COVID continues to increase anxiety levels and challenge mental wellbeing for many.

We know the importance of keeping communities uplifted and the wellbeing of us all needs to be a major part of the Delta outbreak response across Aotearoa.”

Generosity is vital for MHF to keep pace with the growth in demand for its services, with fundraising allowing the charity to provide information, guidance and develop innovative programmes across the board.

Leading insurer AMI calls on Kiwis to take extra care while charging their devices and gadgets.

AMI is reporting at least one home insurance claim a month for fire damage caused by lithium-ion batteries and their charging systems.

AMI’s claims data suggests these types of household fires are not only growing in frequency but are more likely to cause severe damage compared to other types of fires – with many resulting in the loss of an entire home.

In recent years, Kiwis have fallen in love with battery powered devices, and as the number of devices increase – so does the risk of something going wrong with a lithium-ion battery.

Unlikely alliance formed It’s an unlikely pairing, but Consumer NZ and The NZ Food & Grocery Council have published a joint open letter to parliament today calling for a shake-up of the supermarket industry.

“We are not always allies, but we both agree the concentration of market power in our supermarket sector is producing poor outcomes and putting strain on New Zealand households.

Both consumers and suppliers are being held to ransom by the duopoly of Foodstuffs and Woolworths NZ,” Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy says.

Analysis of Stats NZ data show the cost of an average shop for a typical household equates to 15-20 percent of income for median or lower income earners.

Mackenzie track temporary closure Parts of Mackenzie track in the Northern Forest will be closed during the upcoming helicopter operation to complete some track upgrades. The work is very weather dependent but is planned for two weekdays between 27 October – 5 November.

New Zealand ShakeOut Whakahaumaru Aotearoa New Zealand ShakeOut, our national earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi, is taking place Thursday 28 October at 9:30am.

ShakeOut takes place across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake. Drop, Cover and Hold. You can also practise a tsunami hikoi (evacuation) if you’re in a coastal area.

Before the drill sign up to ShakeOut – it only takes two minutes.

Make a note of the date and time in your calendar – 9:30am, 28 October 2021. If the date and time don’t work for you, you can ShakeOut any time within two weeks and still be counted.

Know your tsunami evacuation zone. Make plans for a tsunami hikoi if you are in a coastal area.

Learn about the earthquake and tsunami risk in your area and other parts of New Zealand.

Share the ShakeOut – use our resources to get the people around you involved.

Remind yourself and others what to do in an earthquake or tsunami.

Drop, Cover and Hold for 30–60 seconds: Drop down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to, cover your head and neck (or your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you).

If there is no shelter nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

Hold on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it.

While you are doing the drill, take note of what might be happening around you in a real earthquake. Think about what you might need to do to prepare for a real earthquake.

Demolition rolls on Naenae Pool Demolition of the old Naenae Pool is now fully underway, paving the way for construction to begin on the new facility.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry visited the site and the 32-tonne excavator that will bring down the 65-year-old pool and fitness suite.

“Demolition brings us a step closer to rebuilding the Naenae Pool and restoring the beating heart of the town centre,” Campbell says.

“The pool holds a lot of special memories for many in the community, and for some, it will be hard to see the old building come down. At the same time, it’s really exciting that we’re finally seeing progress on restoring such an important community facility.”

Contractors have removed as much internal material as possible, and the Council project team will be working with those who indicated they would like a memento of the old pool to ensure they are able to own a unique piece of history.

Demolition will begin at the centre of the

building and bring down the roof before demolishing the concrete exterior. The project will repurpose up to 80 percent of existing materials to save it going to landfill.

Demolition is scheduled to conclude in early 2022, with construction of the new facility expected to begin soon after.

Draft concept plans for the $68 million replacement are being reviewed by the community to ensure it fits with their vision and aspirations for their neighbourhood. The draft designs draw on local cultural heritage and align with Council’s wider sustainable, environmental, wellbeing, and leisure goals.

Naenae residents and all former pool users are invited to provide feedback on draft concept designs for the new-look pool.

Rationing was seen in Supermarkets during lock downs and as a people we have become too dependent on being able to pop into a supermarket every day for that days food or top ups.

Simple fast things to grow such as silverbeet, lettuce, radishes, mescaline and sprouts can mean a ELJ GL൵ HUHQFH WR \RXU IRRG FKDLQ by having fresh healthy produce.

Mrs T celebrates 25 years By: Gerald Rillstone Much loved Arakura School teacher, Cherie Tinetti, or Mrs T as she is known by many celebrated 25 years teaching at the school she attended as a student and lived next to as a child.

After attending Arakura school as a student, Mrs T went on to Wainuiomata Intermediate and then to Wainuiomata College, trained as a teacher and ended up doing a placement at Arakura that saw her offered her first job when she was 21 years old.

It has been a strong bond with the school and a love of the community that has seen the past 25 years fly by for Mrs T. “It has been amazing. It doesn’t even feel like 25 years.”

“As a pupil I lived just over the back of the top field on Harlow Grove and I lived there until I started teaching and I have been here all my life. I love Wainui,” she says.

While at Wainuiomata College she had the chance to do work experience at Glendale School for two days a week and that experience confirmed for her she did want to be a teacher.

She went on to do the four year conjoint degree for teachers straight after leaving college which was four years of working and teachers college.

“I did my final placement for my studyies here and the lady whose class I was in was leaving, and I decided to apply for the job and I was awarded it

and have been here ever since,” Mrs T says.

She is teaching children of the children she used to teach and finds it amazing.

“I’m teaching the children of friends I went to school with as well and it is a real blessing being here.”

She knows all the children at the school by name, all 140 to 180 of them.

As much as she loves the community Mrs T says her long run at the school may come to an end in the next few years with plans to move to the Wairarapa.

Protest If you’re going to be in or traveling in to Wellington City this week - a week of organised protests will be taking place from today, Monday October 25th to Thursday 28th mostly around Parliament, Hill St, possibly Lambton Quay.

The protest is expected to create some disruption on the roads in the CBD, particular on Wednesday 27 October This is being organized by Extinction Rebellion and is in regards Te Tiriti O Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi).

Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust The Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust who lost over 12,000 of its 19,000 iwi members is holding an election despite its membership register still being in ‘a shambles’. Mau Whenua and other iwi members took the Trust to the Maori Land Court in an attempt to force them to rectify the register and processes and include the disenfranchised iwi members.

The Court appointed Sir Wira Gardiner to conduct a review of the Trusts register and election practices. In May 2020 Sir Wira reported that the register was a ‘shambles’ and that thousands had been declined membership in addition to those that had been ‘lost’. The Trust was ordered to work with Mau Whenua and other applicants to repair the register and processes.

But 18 months later, the Trust has ‘up-dated the details’ of only 2,465 members and does not appear to have addressed the thousands of ‘declined membership’ at all. Of huge concern the whakapapa committee, which verifies membership, does not appear to be functioning, and there are reports that new registrations are taking over a year to process. Mau whenua and the other applicants are not satisfied with the progress of PNBST remedying the issues of the membership register. There appears to be a significant amount of work still to be done to address the lost membership and re-connect with members.

David Tawhai-Bodsworth believes he has a variety of skills and qualities that he could bring to the Trust. He has worked in operational, strategic and programme

management for many years including past work as a Chartered Accountant.

He has the required 5 registered iwi members to nominate him. He submitted his membership application in September 2020. Despite repeated follow-up queries, he is still not registered, and cannot stand for election or even vote.

Mau Whenua Chair Karen Parata says her brother Darrin has a similar story. And she is aware of other families where some or most members have been disenfranchised. She does not believe the Trust has made a serious effort to reinstate people on the register. “They have ignored our call for registration hui-a-iwi, refusing to meet with iwi members, despite being in COVID Level One for most of the period from May 2020 to August 2021. The delay in registering or reregistering iwi members is unconscionable. This election is a disappointment to all those whanau who should be able to vote but find they cannot. PNBST cannot claim to have a mandate from the iwi for 2021 elections.”

Iwi member Dr Catherine Love believes the large-scale disenfranchisement and rejection of iwi members is particularly tragic given the history of dispossession of the iwi. “Our people have had their land and their identity ripped from them for generations. To now have their own Trust repeat the process is heart-breaking and soul destroying”. The disenfranchisement comes on top of the Trust ignoring the 2016 iwi vote NOT to sell land at Shelly Bay and the unanimous AGM vote not to work with The Wellington Company the same year.

Cane’s body of work the physical question The news Sam Whitelock will captain the All Blacks over Sam Cane is a vote of no-confidence in the flanker.

Now, I must preface this column by saying, Cane’s leadership style has rubbed me the wrong way since he was given the role after the 2019 Rugby World Cup. He comes across as a whinger when interacting with referees during games and he’s made comments questioning the intelligence of the New Zealand rugby public which were poorly thought out at

best and idiotic at worst.

Cane, 29, has been out of action since the end of March, after rupturing his pectoral muscle playing for the Chiefs in Super Rugby Aotearoa.

With Cane now returning to the field, coach Ian Foster suggested he would be eased back into the environment and assistant coach John Plumtree has confirmed Whitelock will lead the side.

Cane, as a player, is terrific, he tackles like a machine and his work rate certainly cannot be questioned,

it is his leadership that has him bemoaned by a lot of people on the outside.

Many people, particularly in the South Island, wanted Whitelock as the captain through to the 2023 World Cup, but since Cane has been pegged as a captain-inwaiting since 2012, there was an element of inevitability about his succession after Kieran Read’s retirement.

If Cane was the undoubted leader of the All Blacks, then there would be no reason to take the captaincy

off him, regardless of the length of the injury lay-off.

There’s no way Read, Richie McCaw or Tana Umaga would have played in a team they didn’t captain during their leadership tenure.

It seems to be a major vote of no confidence in either Sam himself or his body’s ability to withstand the physicality needed to get to the next World Cup. If I was to guess, I’d say it was the latter.

Cane has had neck injuries and a history of concussions and with the

tournament still two years away, there is no guarantee Cane will make it.

The All Blacks’ regimes of the past decade have not been ones to backtrack on too many selections.

They’ve been built on a base of stubbornness and with good reason because the success has been phenomenal.

However, this seems to be an admission of sorts that Cane has something to prove on this Northern Hemisphere tour, perhaps more physically than mentally.

Natzke sends a Warning message to rivals

By Andy McGechan The 2021-22 motocross season could not have kicked off any better for Kawasaki racer Josiah Natzke.

The 22-year-old from Mount Maunganui firstly helped his sixrider Team Green squad to overall victory at Friday’s annual Battle Of The Teams motocross in Taupo and then he lined up again two days later to ride as an individual and dominate the talent-laden MX2 (250cc) class at the big annual MX Fest event that was also staged at the Digger McEwen Motorcycle Park on the outskirts of Taupo.

With COVID-19 pandemic imposing chaos on many of New Zealand’s major sporting activities at present, and with so many of them actually postponed or abandoned completely, it was remarkable in itself that the three-day festival of motocross was able to be staged at all.

Natzke and his Bridgestone Kawasaki Racing Team certainly made the most of the opportunity that was presented by the proactive and forward-thinking Taupo Motorcycle Club, the extravaganza heralding the start to the 2021-22 motocross season over three days of Labour Weekend.

Friday’s stand-alone Battle Of The Teams fundraiser event and the MX Fest event that followed – juniors racing on Saturday and seniors on Sunday – was a rare gem for the motorcycling community that had been forced to stand by due to COVID restrictions and there are now fingers crossed that the season can continue in one form or another.

Natzke took his Kawasaki KX250F four-stroke bike to win all three of his MX2 class races on Sunday, each time heading off challenges from Tauranga’s Brodie Connolly, the rising star who won the 125cc class and the under-19

title in the nationals last season but who has since jumped up to race the more powerful 250cc competition.

Third best in this class on Sunday was Southland racer Jack Treloar, the 18-year-old apprentice builder from Otautau, near Invercargill, rewarded for his long journey with a truly solid podium performance.

Natzke’s unbeaten run will surely have rung a few alarm bells for his MX2 class rivals ahead of the run of summer events that are scheduled, but not yet confirmed, for December and then on into the New Year.

“It was a great way to start the season. I haven’t done a lot of preparation ... just a little bit of riding and fitness, but nothing crazy,” said Natzke afterwards.

“It’s a shame (Oparau’s national MX2 No.2) James Scott wasn’t able to be here because he would have spiced things up a bit more. Brodie (Connolly) rode great today.

Junior and women’s class winners on Saturday were Morrinsville’s Jared Hannon (14-16 years 250cc class and 15-16 years 125cc class); Tauranga’s Jack Coleman (12-14 years 125cc class); Invercargill’s Seth Morrow (12-16 years 85cc class); Oropi’s Levi Townley (8-11 years 85cc class); Tokoroa’s Levi Rodgers (8-11 years Pro 65cc class); Tauranga’s Roma Edwards (women).

Samoan heritage celebrated Wainuiomata’s two prominent Samoan sports clubs celebrated their heritage at their first mafutaga (gathering) last weekend.

Ulalei and Tamaiti o le Mauga enjoyed games of f lag football, touch football and relay races on a glorious day at Wise Park in a concept designed to encourage pride in being both Samoan and being residents of Wainuiomata. Tamaiti o le Mauga founder Tipasa Tanoai commented, “The mafutaga is about bringing the Samoan clubs together and celebrating our beautiful culture and this awesome com mun ity. But for COVID restrictions, the attendance would have been much higher given the size of the clubs’ player and supporter bases.

The fun day comes at an important time of the journey for Samoans living in Aotearoa particularly in light of unfair and ill-informed criticism from media and social media platforms around COVID outbreaks.

Ulalei patron Fauono Ken Laban reflected on that journey saying, “Members of both clubs all share the same story. Our parents and grandparents came to Aotearoa in the 1960s and 1970s for the opportunity for a better life – from education to employment and
