An inspiration in his own right, Stan Walker, paid a surprise visit to students at Wainuiomata Intermediate School this week putting on a performance and sharing some advice and stories about his life.

Be the best version of you Continued from page 1 It was a well kept secret by principal Craig Sharp until the morning of his visit to the schools assembly and it was well worth the wait.

Craig says the visit came about because Stan’s manager, Moewaka Coffey, is from Wainuiomata and orgainsed it to give something back to the community he grew up in and the music legend was more than happy to oblige.

Moewaka is also an inspiration, he went through the school system

in Wainuiomata and ended up working a nine to five job but hated it and thought about what he liked and it was music.

“I loved going to festivals and loved going to concerts and worked out how to make it a job,” Moewaka says.

It was by no means easy but eventually it worked out and he was asked to manage Stan.

Working with Stan also opened up the opportunity for Moewaka to organise the visit.

“I thought about what I could

do in my limited capacity to give back and help the community and I contacted Stan and asked if we could do a school visit to my old school and he was really excited about it,” he says.

As part of the visit Stan shared some of his journey through life and used his experiences to inspire the students.

“I used to get picked on and I would get hidings but I used to dream as a kid and when I was seven years old I remember climbing to the top of a hill walking

with a stick talking to myself and would pretend I was singing to thousands and thousand of people never realising that that would be my reality,” Stan says.

“I really wanted to encourage every single person in the room, students and teachers, if they have a dream make it happen and dream bigger don’t be held back.”

He says he had no hope in his up bringing and was told he was going to be nothing and if he can live his dream then anyone can if they be the best version of themselves.

Now two weeks into the job Wainuiomata’s new Maori Wardens are enjoying their time patrolling the main street.

Lee Tanirau and Suzanne Minhinnick got their first taste of patrolling during the recently held Pacific Nations Rugby league Tournament.

Both members of the Nazeren Church in Wainuiomata they are out patrolling between 9:30am and 3:30 in the afternoon.

Lee says that the businesses and locals are pleased to see them around.

“Its been good in the first few weeks,” Lee says , “there have been a few trouble makers but mostly its pretty good and it is good for the shop keepers and the community and I get to meet all the shop keepers and all the people who come to the shops.”

ments from people shaking our hands and patting us on the back and thanking us for doing the job.”

Suzanne and Lee say they are both looking forward to being fully warranted in the positions in the next few weeks.

Data is key to conservation Greater Wellington Region Council is innovating ways to transform and humanise freshwater data to drive positive change, through CreativeHQ’s NZ GovTech Accelerator programme.

Greater Wellington experts are coming to the end of the threemonth programme that works with eight local and central government agencies to problem solve complex issues in low-risk, innovative ways.

At the heart of the Greater Wellington project team’s problem is, how might we better share information with communities in a way which is meaningful to them, and allows them to understand, engage with, and take care of

water in their community The solution lies in humanising the data so it can become meaningful, relatable and actionable, says Ainslee Brown, Greater Wellington, environment technical support officer and project member.

“Our focus is to help communities, businesses and government to access freshwater data to support and drive positive freshwater outcomes.

“But our current challenge lies in the fact that freshwater data is stored in a fragmented way.

There’s lots of it – but there is no collective, centralised responsibility for the management and

Currently, the team’s vision is to create an online platform that uses storytelling and data visualisation to present freshwater data, enables community contribution and is transparent about priorities and pathways to improve freshwater outcomes.

“And by sitting down and talking with all these people, we quickly

The purpose of the accelerator is to help participants approach a problem from multiple angles which inform future discussions and decision making, rather than provide a single, determined outcome.

Greater Wellington’s Environment Committee Chair and councillor, Penny Gaylor says, “The wellbeing of freshwater is a really high priority for our generation, there is a lot being done in this space but more work still needs to be done.”

Success for TeeJae Wainuiomat’s TeeJae Maxwell has been recognised for her hard work by the Hutt Valley DHB with an award for Non-Clinical staff.

TeeJae won the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution by Non-Clinical Staff’ at the Hutt Valley DHB Celebrating Success Awards.

TeeJae has worked at Whai Oranga for the last 11 years as receptionist and now practice assistant.

When presented with the award it said, “TeeJae puts her heart and soul into doing the right thing for patients enrolled at the practice. She is a super communicator who advocates well for

enrolled patients.”

TeeJae says she was a medical receptionist for 11 yrs and studied last year to become a PCPA (Primary Care Practice Assistant) under the Health Care Home model and was then appointed the position in July this year.

After going into forced hibernation during Covid Wainuiomata Little Theatre is back and preparing to get underway for their next production, Les Misérables.

Wainuiomata Little Theatre president Trevor Williams says they had a show ready to go in March, Les Misérables, the show had been cast the whole thing and looked like it was going to happen.

They rehearsed in March and the show was going to be done in August but the lockdown caused a lot of uncertainty and when they came out of level one it still presented a problem.

They couldn’t sell food and had to keep the audience apart so the decision was made to cancel this years production.

But Trevor managed to negotiate with the people who own the rights in Australia and they let them transfer it to June 2021.

“It is such a big deal for us and it is a big show involving a cast of around 40 and crew added to it and we thought it would be better to regroup this year and that is what the plan is we are still alive and kicking.”

“We were in a relative lucky position because we could transfer it to 2021,” Trevor says.

First rehearsals will start at the end of January 2021 with the aim of putting on the show at the end of June or early July.

They are looking for cast for the show and in particular, men so it is full steam ahead with plans this weekend to have an open day so anyone who is keen to give it a go can come along and meet other members.

It will be a chance for those interested to talk to members about all aspects of the production process, from costume making to set construction, technical, front of house and more.

Pro Wrestling returns By: Gerald Rillstone After running their first show post Covid in August Pro Wrestling is back in Wainuiomata this weekend with a huge event planned.

The fist bout signed for the event is the local Darby with both competitors being born and bred in Wainuiomata, Pauly Spitfire takes on The Beast Jade Priest with the main event to follow with world traveled star NIWA who has returned from the UK and Mexico to do battle against the 200kg Man Mountain Adam Avalanche.

Pauly says he can’t wait to put on a show for the locals having grown up in Wainuiomata he attended Glendale, Pukeatua and Wainuiomata Intermediate and Wainuiomata High School.

Now in his late 20’s Pauly left Wainuiomata at 18 to pursue a career in Wrestling and traveled the world and wrestled in Mexico, Portugal, Ireland, Wales, the United Kingdom and Australia.

“It was pretty exciting for a kid from Wainui,” he says.

Hayden Thiele is the promoter for the wrestlers and is also from Wainuiomata.

He has been into wrestling since he was eleven and trained at the same gym as Pauly, He Toa gym in Petone.

“I went along for a training and things never looked back from there and now I am training up and coming wrestlers,” Hayden says.

He still wrestles but is putting all his efforts into promoting Valiant Pro Wrestling.

A lot of the wrestlers come from Wainuiomata, NIWA who is in the main event was born and bred in Wainuiomata, The Beast J Priest was also, and it is a place very close to their hearts they say.

“There is a growing population in Wainuiomata and not a lot to do so we want to put on a show for everyone to enjoy and it’s great to show the young kids from Wainuiomata that they can chase their dreams and see the world through their profession,” Pauly says.

The show starts at 6:30 at Wainuiomata Intermediate when NIWA takes on Adam Avalanche who is 200 kilo’s.

Problems with tomatoes?: By Wally Richards

It is a sad state of affairs when gardener’s second most favourite plant can’t be grown any more. It’s not so much that they can’t be grown; it is because they get to a reasonable height with fruit on, then the plants die in front of your eyes, no matter what you do. I get phone calls from gardeners wanting potassium permanganate or Terracin to sterilise the soil to overcome the problem.

It is good that they call because I can then find out what is actually happening, analyse the problem and then once I have pin-pointed the cause we can provide a remedy. To give a diagnosis I first ask are you growing potatoes and if you are how are they?

Many gardeners don’t grow potatoes because they do not have the space to do so, but if they do I need to know at harvest time whether they have potatoes about the size of marbles? If the potatoes are of a good size do they have dark rings inside them when cut open and taste funny? Also what date they plant and harvest?

That helps greatly to determine what is wrong with their tomatoes as they are both of the same family and similar pests and diseases can affect both crops.That is one of the reasons why it is best not to grow tomatoes and potatoes near each other. If it is only tomatoes they grow, I ask if the following happens: You plant your seedlings and they grow well enough and likely reach a height of over a metre, flower and set some fruit. Then the plants start going backwards with

Students help keep oceans rubbish free Schools across Wellington have flocked to sign up to an innovative programme helping educate young Kiwis on how to help keep our oceans rubbish free.

The Nestlé for Healthier Kids Sea Cleaners programme, created by Nestlé New Zealand in partnership with Kiwi non-profit organisation Sea Cleaners, gives schools across the country free access to tools and resources to help kids understand the impact of litter.

The programme aims to educate a new generation of young Kiwis about how their individual actions can have a positive

impact on the planet, while helping to tackle the rubbish problem currently plaguing waterways.

The programme includes lesson content developed by School Kit that branches multiple streams of the school curriculum including science, social science and the arts. It provides a variety of resources to help students to categorise and analyse rubbish correctly, as well as information and kits to conduct local clean-ups to demonstrate to students the real-world difference each student’s actions can have on the natural environment.

The free clean-up kits are made from 100% reusable and recyclable materials, including paper collection bags, cotton gloves, and guides to help students correctly sort the rubbish.

older leaves going funny; drying and falling off. This progresses up the plant so only the upper leaves are looking ok for a while.

Then a fungi growth starts appearing on the trunk and our tomatoes’ days are numbered. Another season with no tomatoes.The cause is progressive as in the first season when it starts you will not likely notice a problem other than the early fruit are likely to be larger than the later fruit and the plants may finish earlier than expected. The following year it gets worse and with another year or two no ripe tomatoes anymore.

You can use Neem Granules/powder, spray with Super Neem Oil, spray all sorts of chemical insecticides and in the early times those things will help but once the problem builds over a season or two then you are pushing the proverbial up hill. Several years ago (about 10years ago) was when I first found a problem and that was with a crop of potatoes I planted around Labour weekend and when I harvested them a few months later I had potatoes about the size of marbles and they were re-shooting. I thought I had put too much nitrogen into the soil so my fault. Tomatoes were not as good as previously so I thought that was likely the weather.

I moved to a new property and took the problem with me on container plants I had growing. The new location was a micro-climate because of the commercial buildings and the problems escalated. By then I had learnt

what was causing the problem and that was psyllids. Once you do see them then on the plant there can be hundreds even thousands of the pests feeding and injecting a toxin into the plant which is the main cause of the plant’s problems.

But we have the solution and that is to make the cells of the host plant so tough that the nymphs that have weak feeding mouths cannot piece the plant to feed. This means they will die with a few hours of hatching which breaks the life cycle. It takes three products to do this strengthening of the tomato plant/potato/tamarillo, which are sold as a kit to start with.

A silicon and boron soil drench applied either prior to planting, at planting time or to existing young plants already planted and again two weeks later. A spray comprised of the Silicon Cell Strengthening spray with the Silicon Super Spreader added (at only 1mil to 5 litres of spray) which drives the other product into the plant. You need to start when fist planting your tomatoes as I don’t think it will work so well on a well-established plant. The plants need to absorb the silicon as they grow. You repeat sprays every two weeks while the plant is growing until you reach maturity which at that time the cells of the tomato plant are so tough the nymphs are hatching into a grave yard of Nymphs.

That’s it. The tomato plant is growing very happily hopefully with my Secret Tomato Food to ensure great tasting tomato flavour.

Wainuiomata Predator free is stepping up its game and has more traps and more funding in its sights.

Steven Fraser Secretary and Trustee of the Wainuiomata Natural Heritage Trust andA solid the co-coordinator of Predator Free Wainuiomata says their plan is to obtain funding for and distribute DOC 200 traps (for stoats etc) in bush areas on the fringes of Wainuiomata, eliminate invasive cherry trees that are taking over large swathes of the bush fringes and create a Kowhai corridor in the valley.

Coming onboard in support of the trust is local Sally-Ann Moffat, Sally-Ann has a background in marketing and communication and her help is exactly what the trust needs.

They want to encourage more locals to get involved.

“We want to engage and involve people and get them to look at their backyard as part of the bigger jigsaw.”

Steven says Predator Free has been very successful all over the country and Wainuiomata was one of the last pieces of the jigsaw.

“We were one of the last in the greater Wellington area which is ironic because we are one of the biggest,” Steven says.

“Part of the next phase of what we are doing is in the fringes around Wainuiomata and we have had to switch to different traps to catch stoats as well.”

With over 300 traps and tunnels already out in the area trapping predators they hope an increase in interest and help from the wider community, will help everyone see the benefits of it.

Initially Steven says they were talking about having 1200 traps but one of the issues is checking them all and that is one of the issues they are struggling with.

Motocross dates and venues

By Andy McGechan The dates and venues for the 2021 New Zealand Motocross Championships were announced this week by the sport’s governing body here, Motorcycling New Zealand.

The big news to come out of the announcement is that New Zealand’s biggest stand-alone motocross – the traditional Honda New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville – will not be a stand-alone event in 2021 because it will now also incorporate the first round of four in the national championship series.

It is already a huge weekend every year, but it will be even more massive next season, two days of racing scheduled for January 30-31 and with even more motivation to be there.

In addition to the Woodville event holding GP trophy status, just as it has every year, but it will also kick off the New Zealand senior championship title chase for the MX1, MX2 and MX125 classes, as well as staging the first of four rounds of the inaugural 2T Cup (for two-stroke bikes) and the first of two rounds for the Women’s Cup. “The majority of New Zealand motocross riders compete at Woodville each year and, because we were uncertain what might be happening with the COVID-19

pandemic and with us wanting to keep down the costs for riders, we have decided to combine these events,” said Motorcycling New Zealand motocross commissioner Ray Broad.

“Unfortunately there are no South Island rounds on the New Zealand Motocross Championships calendar, however we are resurrecting the travel subsidy scheme for South Island riders who commit to two or more rounds. It will be paid out on a pro-rata basis,” he said.

“We will be working closely with South Island Cubs to ensure a return in 2022.”

After the Woodville opener, New Zealand Motocross Championship rounds follow at Rotorua on Sunday, February 21, with round three at Pukekohe on Saturday, March 20 (with a junior and mini open event on Sunday, March 21) and the fourth and final round at Taupo on Sunday, March 28.

Broad said an Under-19 Championship will again be run within MX2 and would be awarded to the best-placed rider aged under19 competing in the MX2 class, as we have the past two seasons. “For example, Aucklander Blake Gillard finished fifth overall riding a 250cc two-stroke bike against the 350cc and 450cc MX1 bike riders in the 2019 series and, if the 2T Cup had been in place at that time, he would have been the winner of the 2T Cup. “There will be no MX3 nonchampionship suppor t class races run at the Woodville round, but there would be at the three rounds that follow and this year it will be a series, with the top riders recognised at the prize-giving after Taupo.

“We are looking forward to an exciting season, with something for everyone. More details on the series and the classes will be released over the coming weeks,” said Broad.

2021 NZ Motocross Champs calendar: Round One: January 30-31, 2021 (in conjunction with the NZMX Grand Prix at Woodville). Manawatu-Orion MCC. MX1 (& 2T Cup), MX2 (& under-19), MX125 & round one of the Women’s Cup. Round Two: Sunday, February 21, 2021. Rotorua Motorcycle Club. MX1 (& 2T Cup), MX2 (&

under-19), MX125 & MX3.

Round Three: Saturday, March 20.

Pukekohe Motorcycle Club. MX1 (& 2T Cup), MX2 (& under-19), MX125 & MX3 (followed by Junior and Mini open at Pukekohe on Sunday, March 21).

Round Four: Sunday, March 28.

Taupo Motorcycle Club. MX1 (& 2T Cup), MX2 (& under-19), MX125, MX3 & round two of the Women’s Cup. Prize giving is arranged for that evening.
