The Scots College pupil ran three minutes 54.39 seconds which took four seconds off his coaches time.

“I was pretty stoked, the conditions weren’t ideal on the day so I was a bit nervous but when I crossed the line and knew I was in the realm of 3:54, I was over the moon,” he says.

“To break my coaches record after such a long time was a big thrill.”

Will says both he and Alastair had talked about trying to break the record for many weeks.

“His record was 3:58.80 and I think he was happy to see it go, he wanted someone to beat it and set a new standard.

“We laughed about how he was going to sabotage me in the weeks leading up to it.

“He was there on the day calling my lap splits.

“He congratulated me straight afterwards and he talked to me about the next steps.

“I thought I’d throw in a bit of humour and asked if he walked to get his time.”

Will started running when he was eight-years-old initially doing cross country events.

“The younger kids only had sprint and field events so I just started training and then I did

the 400m, 800m, 1500m and eventually the 3000m when I was old enough.”

Alastair says it was nice to see the record tumble.

“It’s good to see the coach handing over the baton to the upand-coming talent and I got to a national level as a middle-distance runner and he’s far more talented than I ever was so I think he can go a long way.

“Will is very academic, very driven mentally but he’s a wellbalanced kid.

“Will has the talent to go sub3:50 on a good day.”

The duo has been working together for five years with Alastair coaching many runners who have claimed national records and scholarships overseas.

When he was younger Will also played rugby and water polo and he also swam at a club level.

Will is targeting a scholarship to a college in America but still wants to get his times down before he starts applying.

He also hopes to study physics and go on to get a postgraduate degree so he is eager to balance both his studies and his running.

Will has the national championships this weekend where he will race the 1500m and the 5km track event.

Will Anthony has lofty American goals both on the track and in the lab.

Waitohi Hub closing for maintenance over Easter Waitohi Community Hub in Johnsonville will be closed to the public over the long Easter weekend for significant maintenance and resealing work.

The closure includes Common Ground Café, Johnsonville Library and Keith Spry Pool. The Johnsonville Community Centre will remain open except on the statutory holidays – Good Friday and Easter Monday.

“We are doing this over Easter as most parts of Waitohi were closing on the statutory Easter holidays. Otherwise we would have needed to shut down the Hub for four consecutive days later in the year,” says Laurinda Thomas, Libraries and Community Spaces Manager.

“Resealing the tiles is a one-off piece of maintenance to protect the surface for the long-term. This process takes several days to complete, as we need carry out a deep clean before several layers of sealant are applied.

Each layer of sealant needs time to dry before the next one can be laid.

“As we will be unable to clear the returns bins over Easter, we would appreciate library customers with items that are due over Easter to keep them at home or return them to any of our other 13 branches. We will waive any overdue

fees for items due back to Johnsonville Library.

People will be able to collect their reserves from Tuesday and no fees will be charged for late collection of these either. Thank you to our customers and the local community in advance for their understanding.”

While Waitohi will be quieter, please take care travelling on Johnsonville roads which will be busier due to a traffic detour. Contractors will be carrying out tree-felling across the State Highway network, which will require traffic to be detoured through Johnsonville at times over the Easter break. Waka Kotahi will share more information about these detour plans in the coming week.

Waitohi closing information: Waitohi Community Hub will be closed from 7pm, Thursday 1 April and reopen at 7:30am, Tuesday 6 April. This includes the library’s after-hours returns slot.

inbrief news Tree-felling in Johnsonville Tree-felling works will take place on the hill above the southbound lanes of State Highway 1 near Johnsonville during Easter weekend. The majority of the work will take place on the mornings of Friday 2 April and Saturday 3 April between 7am and 12 noon, weather permitting. Investigations found several large trees pose a potential danger to state highway traffic due to their age, size and overhang.

The zig zag path to the top of the hill is very overgrown and full of gorse, barberry and broom. Work started on Tuesday and Community Crews will be clearing the zig zag path up to the top of the hill and around the lookout area.

Planting will happen in wet months.

Rise in anxiety for Wellington’s children

During last year’s lockdown, mother-of-two Amy Jones was working at a local GP, when she noticed her three-year-old son KƗri was going through a rough patch.

Jones was working long hours and felt guilty at how little time she could spend with her child.

“It was really hard. I was quite heavily pregnant.

“You feel really guilty. Guilty about not being able to give [KƗri] time, and guilty about not doing enough work. You feel like you’re cheating out.”

Amy’s situation is a common one for parents in Wellington now, says psychologist Dr Emma Woodward.

Wellington has seen a 40 percent rise in referrals for anxiety

in children, and societal focus on productivity over wellbeing may partly be the cause, she says.

Emma specialises in child and adolescent mental health, and is the Director of Psychological Services at the Child Psychology Service, as well as mum to four boys aged between one to 10.

The rise in referrals could be because the service is becoming known for supporting children and young people with anxiety, but Woodward believes there are other factors in play - with climate change, social media, and parental work-related stress among them.

Our focus on productivity has forced parents to “squeeze” their children between many competing demands.

“A focus on productivity has been

overwhelming us for far too long.

We are now seeing symptoms in ourselves, and in our children too.

“It has been our main focus, and it has now reached saturation point. We need to act differently to re-correct the balance towards our wellbeing.”

She says it is not the fault of parents, who are doing the best they can in a system that is “no longer fit for purpose.”

“If we’re physically and psychologically uncomfortable, we feel stress.

The purpose of stress is to make us change our behaviour. “However, if we can’t change our behaviour, or don’t know how to, this can become overwhelming and lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.”

Common anxiety symptoms include struggling to approach a task,

or avoidance, but there may also be anger, withdrawal, disordered eating, and sleep disturbance.

Emma says a solution is to make small positive changes over the things we can control, including how we think about things.

“I don’t expect everyone to quit their jobs, but we’ve got more control than we think.

“Just noticing and recognising your own limits and choosing to be in control of what you can.

“We have to accept that life involves some level of suffering, but that we can commit to acting in a manner that supports our wellbeing in spite of this.”

To help children struggling from anxiety, teach them to recognise early signs of stress and the skills to manage these feelings,Woodward

says.

“We can’t give them certainty, but we can teach them the skills they need to thrive in uncertain times.”

First parents must deal with their own stress as children do what they see their parents do.

“We have to start with us. You do your best until you know better, then, when you know better, you choose to do better.”

For Amy, to cope with lockdown-induced stress, she and her son did arts and crafts at home. With her husband, they spoke to KƗri so he would understand why they couldn’t leave their house. This helped him through lockdown, she believed.

“It was a hard time initially, but he just knows what Covid is now.

When we can’t go to the pool, he says ‘awww, Covid!’”

Karori mum collects hundreds of shoes for charity

One Karori mum has been helping Wellington kids take steps towards success.

For the past 11 years Deb Petersen has collected used childrens shoes and donated them to a local school. She calls the project ‘Shoes in Need.’

Shoes in Need began in 2011, when Deb noticed that her three young sons were quickly growing out of their shoes. She wondered if there was a way to reuse them.

“I thought it was a shame to throw them out, when there are people who need them,” Deb says..

After speaking to friends, Petersen found that many of them also had the desire to rehome the shoes their children had grown out of. One friend knew a primary school in greater Wellington who would happily take the shoes.

The mum-of-three started making yearly trips to the school, which due to privacy Deb cannot name. Initially, the project only involved Petersen’s friends and parents of children in her sons’ classes, but quickly spread to the entire suburb.

Now, Shoes in Need is well known in Karori. The local primary school boxes

up shoes at their annual gala for Petersen to take, and people drop shoes off at Deb’s house all times of the year.

“I have no idea who they are!” Deb laughs.

“I think people appreciate having somewhere to drop their shoes.”

Deb has collected hundreds of shoes over the years, too many to count she says.

“One time, I laid them all out and counted.

It was 75 pairs.”

The Karori mum makes sure the footwear is all suitable for playground use. Laces, while preferred, are not necessary, although she does ask that the shoes be clean.

An area in need of footwear is outdoor recreational trips, Deb says.

“For outdoor recreation trips, they need two pairs of outdoor shoes. Even if they have one pair, they need another.”

Another area is sports, especially rugby and football.

“It’s enabled kids to play football and rugby.

“They probably wouldn’t have been able to play otherwise.”

Deb also collects swimwear and jackets for the school. She has received some lovely feedback.

Karori’s St Mary’s Early Childhood Education Centre will officially open their new playground on Saturday.

Centre Chaplin Janet Hughes says the project has been years in the planning and over a year in the building but is now fit for play.

“It’s been done in four stages and the great people at Childspace have done a great job.

There is now a sandpit with a house to play in, there is a sand kitchen and water pump for mud play, three swings, balancing poles, boulders to climb on and a slide.

There’s also a new grass area and wooden bike track.

Janet says the children have enjoyed watching the process and have participated safely when the time has been right.

“We’ve been able to use two-thirds of the playground at any one time but the children have been a part of the project which has been great.”

Khandallah prevail in premier tennis final

Khandallah has won the Premier One Regional Mens’ Tennis Interclub Grand Final for the first time in more than a decade.

The team of Ajeet Raj, Anton Shepp, Kyle Butters and Finley and Oliver Hall prevailed over Tawa, four matches to two.

Team manager Chris Hall says

there was a mix of joy and relief after a strong season.

“We’ve been consistently there or thereabouts for the last three years.

“We’ve tended to recruit aspiring US College players but this year we kept a core of the team together and recruited well.

“We had made the final two previous times so it was nice to finally win it.”

After splitting the singles matches, Khandallah was able to win both doubles encounters to take the match.

“There’s some quiet relief and satisfaction to have won a grand final.”

Chris says the entire competition was played in good spirits and was run well by Tennis Central.

He says the strength of the competition was one of the strongest in recent years.

The Khandallah men’s tennis team won their premier competition final for the first time in more than a decade.

First Matsuri for principal at Crofton Downs School People are being encouraged to join the Crofton Downs Primary School community at their Matsuri, a school fair with a difference.

Matsuri is the Japanese word for ‘festival,’ reflecting the community’s enduring connection with the Japanese language school which is on the school grounds, and the Japanese business community.

Principal Justin Potter began at the school in August last year. “I’m really excited about being part of my first Matsuri. The way in which the community has collaborated in its organisation has been hugely impressive. That’s just a reflection of our community strength.”

As well as books, toys, and crafts, the Crofton Downs Matsuri has a Japanese twist.

Food will include yakisoba, karaage chicken, and sushi; while entertainment includes Nakamuri Taiko Drum-

ming, a Kendo demonstration, and new for this year, a Yosakoi Dance troupe.

Mainly Music returns to Karori When her kids were preschoolers Christine Dowell got involved in Mainly Music. Her kids are now teenagers so recently she restarted the group to give back.

“I get it,” she says. “ I didn’t have my parents in NZ so raising children was hard without an extra pair of hands and Mainly Music became a big part of my life,” she says. “It’s just knowing others are in the same boat.”

“The people I met through Mainly Music are still some of my best friends fifteen years later,” says Christine. “There’s an atmosphere of generosity and creativity that builds connections.”

relax and chat. Each week there’s 30 minutes of music then morning tea and play time.

“It’s so simple but it’s been working for over 30 years,” says Christine. “The Mainly Music formula combines church resources, community and volunteers with proven benefits of music, brain development, literacy, motor and social skills and role modelling.”

“I love that African proverb: it takes a village to raise a child,” she says. “We’re all in the village together.”

North Wellington make top 8 at U17 nationals

The North Wellington Under-17 boys team managed to make the quarterfinals at their national age-group tournament at Auckland’s Western Springs over the weekend.

The team started with a 2-1 win over Eastern Suburbs before a gritty 0-0 draw against Auckland United.

They then managed a 4-0 win over Ferrymead Bays with goals to Alden Suri, Riley

Manuel, Henry Sinclair and Max Juran.

Suri was in the scoring action again in their 3-0 win over Northern Rovers.

Johnny Kouhn scored twice in the encounter.

North Wellington ensured they remained unbeaten in pool play thanks to a 2-1 win over Western Springs.

Unfortunately, despite their form, North Wellington succumbed 1-0 to Bay Olympic in the last eight of the event.

Easter is celebrated throughout the world. Whether it be with an egg hunt for the kids, or to have a day off, it’s an exciting holiday for both young and old.

But for some, Easter is a special time to celebrate sacrifice, love, and triumph over death.

As Christians, we know that God became man, died for our sins, resurrected on the third day, and soon coming again for His saints.

This is the basic tenet of the Christian faith and the reason we celebrate.

In John 11:25-26, Jesus claims to be the source and the giver of life. He guarantees eternal life to those who would put their

faith in Him. Such assurance results in a great song of triumph - as the apostle Paul writes, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave where is thy victory?” (1 Corinthians 15:55 kjv) Christianity possesses a founder who transcends death and promises that His followers will also be resurrected to new glorious bodies. The resurrection of Jesus has a great impact on the lives of His followers.

Because they know they will be resurrected to a new life, they can endure the trials and persecutions of life just as Jesus did, knowing well His promise that He will never leave nor forsake His own.

Cargobike trial a successful for family A Wellington family zooms off with a $8000 prize pack from a cargobike trial competition that supports sustainable and active forms of travel within the community, thanks to a partnership between Greater Wellington Regional Council and Bicycle Junction.

Families from across schools and early childhood centres submitted a story and photo or video of their cargobike experience to enter the competition.

Alongside the main prize, nine other families scooted off with a $200 Bicycle Junction voucher and four lucky families have the option to buy a cargobike at 20% discount.

Greater Wellington councillor and member of the judging panel, David Lee says, “We received an incredible turn out of heart-warming submissions from families taking part in the cargobike trial.

“What really stood out about the winning Barratt-Boyes family, was how this active form of travel offered the family of five a fresh perspective and freedom to the usual mundane school drop off.”

the Barratt-Boyes household is comprised of three adults, two young children and two old dogs – and only one car and licensed driver.

Amy Barratt-Boyes says, “The glorious freedom of having another adult run errands or take the littlies out for activities was probably the most profound effect of having the cargobike. And not having to worry about parking.”

The cargobike helped the family find more time in their day as travel and time spent finding parking was substantially reduced,

allowing them to experience adventures enroute to school or the supermarket.

Amy reflects that for the first time, she managed to make the playcentre and school drop offs on time that came with the sheer efficiency of biking with the family onboard.

“I hadn’t realised the extra time walking and driving were taking.

I also really enjoyed being able to choose the level of physical exertion,” says Amy. “I love being active and feeling my body work, I was worried that

the cargobike wouldn’t provide enough exercise but it was brilliant! I could work as hard as I liked, tailoring the assistance for comfort.”

Along with the cargobike being a real pleaser for the adults, the little ones also took a special liking to the cargobike with the smallest being found seated in the bike throughout the day.

Bicycle Junction owner, Dan Mikkelsen says, “It was fabulous to hear all the fun and environmentally friendly experiences families had on our cargobikes.

Investors – New Government Changes

Capital goes goofy over BOWLZILLA

Hey Everyone, what an interesting government announcement this week. I think it is important when there are any changes that there are two reactions, an emotional response and a factual change on how we do things. Learning from the recent RTA changes, there was a portion of the market that emotionally believed the government was out to attack landlords and were spooked into selling. At our landlord information events, we found that once people understood the facts clearly, they were a lot happier and more comfortable continuing to be landlords. So, it is important to not rely on headlines when deciding on what to do with your biggest assets / investments.

Bright-line test extended to 10 years - If you sell a property within 10 years of owning it, there is tax on the profit you make. Your primary home is still excluded, so this is just targeting people who flip properties, speculators, etc. This should lead to mum & dad investors holding onto properties for 10 years instead of 5 before selling.

It is unlikely to affect any investors who currently flip properties, as paying tax on profits is already normal for them.

Mortgage Interest: The removal of the ‘loophole’ (term used by the government), where investors can claim the interest against their income, is the biggest thing here. We’ve seen it in the past where investors were no longer able to claim against renovations and other expenses.

These sorts of policy changes do make an impact, as the additional cost will be passed on to tenants (rent will increase) OR the landlord decide to sell (increasing supply of properties to market).

Historically, when interest rates were higher, it was normal to ‘top up’ mortgages, however newer landlords have only known this market; so, I’m expecting experienced landlords to be much

Wellington will be the capital of skateboarding once again when it hosts BOWLZILLA for the 6th year in a row this Saturday at Waitangi Park.

Skateboarding is making its Olympic debut this year in Tokyo, and BOWLZILLA is Aotearoa’s only points-awarding park competition giving local riders a chance to appear on the Olympic stage.

Although international competitors will not be competing this year, it will be the biggest gathering of skate boarders and their fans in New Zealand since last year’s event, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“We’re proud to be supporting this exciting event again, and while the international legends will be missed, it’ll give our local stars a chance to really shine at these National Championships.”

One of New Zealand’s top skate boarders, 26-year-old Krysta Ashwell, is looking forward to competing after a year affected by COVID-19.

“I feel as if the vibe will be much different as New Zealand skaters give off a more inclusive and family vibe, rather than a competition vibe.

“I love performing in front of an audience too because of the crowd hype to land something different, gnarly or new. I love it when the crowd goes crazy when I land the Can Opener trick, as it’s not a very common trick to see people do and they are always amped when I nail it.”

Krysta’s brother had a skateboard, but her parents thought it was a boy’s sport so wouldn’t get her one for a few years – now her advice to young women is to give it a go.

“Don’t worry about people watching you at the park. If you get to a park where there’s another girl skater there, go skate together. It’s

more resilient.

Housing Acceleration Fund: Watch this space.

Putting more money in social housing may take some pressure of the rental market and may slow the rise of rent. In terms of encouraging more houses to be built… well I’ll believe that when it happens. Residential construction relies on the sole discretion of private companies, there is very little government encouragement can change this.

Increase of First Home Grant limits: Wellington goes up to $650k for new houses and $550k for existing, these caps were always way too low, and the ‘grant’ wasn’t significant enough to entice buyers to buy under the caps. In our area, we are selling Beazley box for around $1m and we just sold a 2 bed townhouse for mid $800k’s. So, this change won’t make any difference to our market here.

Change in Speculation / Fear: This is probably the biggest change, people will have an emotional response to this, and we as an industry must act with integrity to not fan the fear. We saw agents scaring mum & dad investors into selling with the RTA changes, we saw it again over Covid (when everyone knew prices will go up).

Focus on your investment strategy, make sure you plan your cashflow effectively, success and security will always be on the other side of fear.

“Give it a go, it takes time to pick it up but if you keep at it and practice every day you won’t regret it, it becomes life changing.”

A carnival for Neighbours Day

Gather the community together for one special day to get to know one another was all part of the aim for the Crofton Downs Carnival.

Organiser Stacey McGavin says putting on awesome entertainment was all part of the event which was funded through the Wellington City Council.

“We also partnered with the playcentre and their open week and they were

having their annual open day as well so we have the big kids on the field and the playcentre have the little kids and families get to meet each other,” she says.

“Its about making sure the community knows who each other are and finding out about the community and bringing us all together. Last year we were Covid victims and we had to cancel it a week out but this year the day has been perfect.”

A good old fashioned sack race was part of the day for residents during neighbours day at Crofton Downs.

Most of us have experienced headaches, even bad ones. But migraines are something else again. “They are headaches with special symptoms”, say Self Care pharmacists.

A migraine headache is severe, can last for many hours – even days, and is of a throbbing nature. The pain usually is felt on one side of your head, although it can spread to the other side. During a migraine ‘attack’ you may become very sensitive to light, noise and movement. You may also feel sick, and some people vomit.

Not every migraine sufferer knows when he or she will get a migraine but some people get early-warning signs that one is on the way. About a day or so before a migraine, you may start craving for sweet foods, yawn a lot, or feel irritable and withdrawn.

Some get what is called an ‘aura’ - a kind of premonition. These people see shimmering or zigzag lines, or lose vision in one eye, or both eyes. The ‘aura’ can happen up to an hour before the headache, or just five

are available. They range from mild pain relievers that you can buy from a pharmacy and take as soon as you feel the pain coming on, to stronger ones requiring a doctor’s prescription. If you get migraines on a frequent basis, you may need long-term medicines to reduce the number of ‘attacks’, or try to prevent them. Talk with your doctor about this.

Most migraines last only a few hours but some people have very bad ‘attacks’ that last for anything up to three days. Resting or sleeping in a quiet dark room can help. It is common for most people to complain of feeling ‘washed out’ after a migraine and it may take a few days to feel like yourself again.

Talk further with your Self Care pharmacist about migraines and medicines used to treat them. Ask for a copy of the Migraine fact card that provides helpful self care tips on possible ways to avoid ‘triggering’ migraines, and how to manage them.

Women tend to get migraine more often than men – due to changing hormone levels, especially around menstruation time. They get less frequent after menopause. Children can get migraine. Those who do often complain of tummy ache. If your child gets lots of tummy aches for no obvious reason, get it checked-out with your doctor. It could be migraine.

There are many theories about what causes migraine. Certain ‘triggers’ are thought to change blood flow to the brain and cause chemicals to be released that result in the migraine. “Some foods - like cheese, chocolate, wines or citrus fruits - are ‘triggers’ for some people,” advise Self Care pharmacists, “but don’t go depriving yourself of particular foods unless you know for sure that they bring-on your migraines”. Lack of sleep, missing meals, or high levels of stress also can bring-on migraines.

Sailing away for a new beginning It is time the America’s Cup sailed away from New Zealand in an effort to grow its global audience.

Yes, it was great to retain it, yes the latter half of the racing against Prada was far more interesting and entertaining than many, including myself thought it could be but it deserves a bigger stage than Auckland and New Zealand can offer.

The Auckland’s viaduct had 10,000 people at it as Peter Burling’s team secured the 7-3 victory

and that’s the pinnacle of the warm, fuzzy feeling this country can provide.

Government and officials are keen to keep the next event on our shores but surely the Auld Mug would be best served to take it to a more global stage.

Yes, it’s been sailed in San Francisco and Bermuda but it’s time to reinvigorate a Cup which was once a global icon.

Yes, we are a team of 5 million but that is a drop in the ocean.

The government in this climate surely cannot write a blank cheque to help fund the next campaign during a global pandemic.

It is an unwinnable argument for them.

With the Royal Yacht Squadron out of Britain now being the challenger of record, it would make a lot of sense to race it in the United Kingdom or Europe.

Despite its name, the America’s Cup started in Britain, before the Americans took it and claimed it

as their own in an all too familiar USA power play move on the world stage.

Yes, many narrow-sighted people see this event as rich boys and their toys but it also has the ability to unite.

I was six-years-old when the red socks campaign of 1995 happened and maybe that is where the romance of the event comes from, but it needs more participants and a bigger stage.

Team New Zealand has nothing

left to prove.

They have won it, defended it, lost it, regained it and retained it.

It is now time to grow the event and that may be best done offshore.

The final few races were exhilarating but they will soon be a distant memory.

We will remember a winner and a loser, such is life, but for the event to thrive, set it free and hopefully it can return bigger and better at some point in the future.

Johnsonville on cusp of first Pearce Cup triumph

Johnsonville will look to earn their first Pearce Cup cricket title in club history this weekend at Alex Moore Park.

They earned the right to host the final after thumping Karori by an innings and one run on Sunday.

Johnsonville will meet Taita in the three-day decider which starts tomorrow.

Taita is a team they beat on the first innings in round one but one which has dominated them in the shorter formats this season including a 50-over final victory.

Johnsonville lost a final three years ago to a string Eastern Suburbs team.

Johnsonville captain Rakitha Weerasundara says he thinks his team is hitting their stride at the right time.

“I feel our guys are hitting their straps, scoring runs and taking wickets and we are pumped for this week.”

“When I tell family and friends we are playing Taita, they go ‘oh no’ but internally within the team we are

excited about the challenge and they are the team we wanted to face.”

Rakitha says the team is excited at the prospect of winning the trophy for the first time.

“You can sense the buzz, having made the final you get messages of support from the old-timers so it’s a big deal.”

Both teams will have key players they rely on for the contest.

Johnsonville’s Devan Vishvaka is the second-highest run-scorer in the competition with 365 runs at an average of 40.56 while Weerasundara is fourth with 311 runs at 34.56.

Taita’s best comes in the form of Deepak Joon who jas 305 runs at an average of 50.83.

Taita has the top-ranked bowler in Matt Kelly who has taken 28 wickets at an average of 17.57.

A pair of Johnsonville players Zac Ringrose and Josh Mann are second and third respectively having each taken 27 and 25 wickets this campaign.

The two best wicket keepers are also on show with Johnsonville veteran Scott Mudgway going up against Nik Swain.

Devan Vishvaka is set to be a key player as Johnsonville chase their first Pearce Cup cricket title at Alex Moore Park starting tomorrow.

Wilton Classic title comes to Johnsonville

The Johnsonville quartet which won the Wilton Classic were from left Brent Stubbins, Logan Amer, Brady Amer and Allan Brider.

One of the most prestigious tournaments in Wellington, the 2021 Speights Wilton Classic is now in Johnsonville hands.

The team of Brent Stubbins, Logan and Brady Amer, and Allan Brider won on the final bowl of the tournament.

The event saw 32 teams attend from all around New Zealand.

Many of the big names in New Zealand bowls participated, including Gary Lawson, Lance Pascoe, Ray Martin, Seamus Curtin, and Robbie Bennett, as well as a host of local and regional Centre title-winners.

The Speights Classic was played over two days, with the format of fours, triples, pairs and singles.

The final result was not decided until the last bowl of the day, with

the teams of Brent Stubbins (Johnsonville), Ray Martin (Victoria) and Gary Lawson (Stokes Valley) neck and neck.

In the end, Brent, with Logan and Brady Amer, and Allan Brider, were the winners.

The Johnsonville team came through two days of highly competitive bowls unbeaten, with seven wins and a draw, taking the title with a superior differential over Ray Martin’s team, with Gary Lawson in third and another Johnsonville team, skipped by Wayne Coleman, finishing fourth.

The prize giving was an emotional affair for Brides who, having tried for many years to win this event, was finally able to accept the trophy on behalf of the Johnsonville team.
