Tawa’s Nick Walshe admits his first hometown concert this week will provide a few butterflies.

The 31-year-old has returned after five years in Canada to be the Principal Clarinet for the Orchestra Wellington.

Nick eager to make most of childhood dream Continued from page 1.

Nick studied at Montreal’s Schulich School of Music at McGill University and worked in arts administration with Orchestras Canada.

Nick is a born and bred Wellingtonian who attended Tawa College, studied music at the New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University, and played in the National Youth Orchestra.

He is thrilled with the new appointment.

“I can’t wait to play with Orchestra Wellington as we look to spring back to life after delays due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“We’ve had so many changes to our concert schedule. I arrived back in the country in mid-August and quarantined in Auckland, thinking I’d miss much more of the season than I’d initially hoped.

“However, with all the postponements we’ve been experiencing, I may actually get to play most of our 2020 subscription concerts at the Michael Fowler Centre - which would be terrific.”

Nick says plying his trade in classical music is not always easy but he’s enjoyed “the grind of chasing a dream he has had since he was 11.

“I started playing the recorder at age 8 amd I did group music classes for three years and I loved it.

“After that I wasn’t sure what to do but the recorder teacher also played the clarinet so I gave it a go and just immediately loved it.”

He says it was his final year at Tawa College, he knew he wanted to take it further.

“I wasn’t really sure exactly what I wanted to do but that was also the year I started coming into the city and going to orchestra concerts and that had a big effect on me.”

Nick says his aim now is to transition back into Wellington life and enjoy performing while plotting the future.

“To perform in the Michael Fowler Centre, with my hometown orchestra is incredibly special,” he says.

“I want to put together some teaching and performing opportunities and one day I’d like to find a fulltime job as a performer while also being able to perform with various other bands.

“It’s nice to be home and I’m looking forward to everything that is coming even during these uncertain times.”

Nick Walshe is excited to perform again in front of an audience for the first time in six months.

When I received a call from the CEO of Fire and Emergency New Zealand to say the Newlands Fire Brigade will remain in Newlands, I reflected on how the local community who turned out in huge numbers to the public meeting I organised on their behalf, could take satisfaction that their voices had been listened to.

The proposal to move the brigade to the Johnsonville station following the inevitable closure of the Newlands Station would have seen the ultimate demise of the Brigade, and left Newlands with no emergency cover if cut-off in an emergency.

My regular contact with FENZ and the brigade ensured their voice and the public’s was paramount in the decision to keep them in Newlands.

Likewise, I am in constant communication with owners of the Johnsonville Mall to ensure the frustrations of locals over the lack of progress are known, and importantly, to work with them to get things underway.

Being a strident and reasonable voice for locals is how matters are progressed, and was how I was able to get Police to agree to appoint a dedicated community police officer for Tawa.

I spend as much time on the ground to be visible and available so I can gauge public concerns. That is why I have decided not to take the safe option of a list seat in parliament and am standing to be your electorate MP only in the upcoming election.

As we move back to COVID level one, having shown the effectiveness of our governments approach to dealing with the inevitable outbreaks of the virus, we can with confidence ensure life gets back to a watchful new normal.

We remain the envy of the world, and the inevitable hit on the economy of shutting down hard, early, and successfully has now been absorbed and we will be rebounding from here on in. Crowds are back; bring on the Bledisloe at the Stadium.

And speaking of crowds, and hot off the press, I can announce that the Johnsonville Fruit and Vege market will reopen this Sunday. I have been speaking with the school, the operator and the council, and together we have achieved this reopening, while discussions continue around resource consenting.

So well done again Ōhāriu. If this virus has taught us anything, it’s to appreciate what we have close to home, and the crowds enjoying spring sunshine on our bush tracks and in our parks, are further evidence of that.

But continue to be mindful that the massive COVID resurgences we are seeing in Australia and around the world will only be avoided by vigilance, good hygiene including masks, and contact tracing.

As Newlands showed, a determined community, well led, can achieve a heck of Unit 2, 18 Moorefield Road, Johnsonville a lot.

Karori Park play area final draft confirmed

Wellington City Council has confirmed its final design plan for the Karori Park Play Area.

The main feedback they received was around accessibility.

The Council is keen to listen to that feedback in an effort to make the play area as inclusive as popular for children while offering a safe and enjoyable space for parents and caregivers.

Additions include an accessible carousal and an inground accessible tramp, both flush to the ground for ease of access. We’ve also added an

Inclusive Seat in the four seat swing set to allow for a wider range of users.

As the draft design indicated, the final design features some new equipment including a play fort, four-seater swing-set, embankment slides and a trampoline as well a nature play area with steppers.

The existing flying fox will stay put and we’ll be reinstalling the supernova.

Work will start in late October.

The aim is to have the new playground open by Christmas.

The current playground will be closed during construction.

Election debate Nine candidates in the Wellington Central Electorate will face a public meeting at the Karori Baptist Church, Marsden Village, on Thursday 1 October, from 7pm- 9.30pm. Election meetings in Karori have traditionally been large gatherings and with two referendum issues in addition to other political issues there will be plenty at stake. Hopefully level 1 will be in place to ensure the public can attend in good numbers.

Positive feeling for Karori businesses at Level 1

The Karori Business Association believes the return to Level 1 Covid-19 status will positively impact the elderly and the hospitality sector.

KBA manager Gary Holmes says bars and restaurants were one of the big winners, with the 100-person restriction now lifted.

He also believed the elderly will be more willing to venture outside their homes to shop after restrictions eased at midnight on Monday.

“Some of the smaller businesses had to operate on a one person in, one person out scenario so they are now more free to run

“I think you’ll also see more elderly people, who are understandably more cautious, start to venture out to do their shopping, go to the mall and go to a cafe.

“Hospitality becomes a lot more free when you don’t have to have one table, one server.

“For beauty places with hair and nails who have had to be masked-up for Level 2, it will make the service more natural and human.”

Gary says he is confident a

combination of the buy local campaign and the lower level will see increased patronage.

He says the buy local campaign and places being more flexible and nimble in terms of offering takeaway and online shopping alternatives, has been a positive of the Covid-19 experience.

Gary says the feeling is that further level changes may occur but businesses are at least more prepared to try to deal with the challenges.

“There’s no doubt it’s been incredibly tough for small businesses and businesses in general but a small positive is that businesses now know how to operate should levels change again.”

Greater Wellington investigating snapper on rail services Greater Wellington is investigating rolling out Snapper payments on rail services across the region following decisions made at Council to help pave the way for national ticketing.

Transport committee chair Roger Blakeley says it was a timely decision in line with national ticketing developments and the more immediate need for more contactless payment options during COVID-19.

Transmission Gully project presses on From above it looks like Tonka trucks in a sand pit… but the activities at Willowbank Quarry are far from child’s play.

By the end of this year 400,000 tonnes of aggregate rock will have been extracted from the hillside.

By the end of next year, tens of thousands of vehicles a day will be driving over this aggregate on the Transmission Gully motorway.

It’s where big rocks get crushed into small rocks… mainly 40mm sized rocks called ‘All Passing 40’ or ‘AP40’ product (because every rock has passed through a 40mm sieve) used for Transmission Gully’s pavement works.

The quarry is nestled into a hill on Willowbank Farm – at 1,800 acres of rugged countryside it is one of the largest privately owned farms in the Wellington region.

Along with running 2,000 sheep, 200 cattle, 60 alpacas and 18 prize

Foxtrotter horses, farm manager, Paul Nation can now add quarrying to his diverse business.

“No-one had used the quarry since the late ’90s. As a neighbour, it had been a thorn in the farm’s side. But when the land came up for sale – we bought it. We knew we could clean up its environmental issues.”

Nation says he never anticipated opening the quarry until the opportunity came up to help on an important project, Transmission Gully. The quarry is only two and a half kilometres from the site.

“It’s invaluable for Transmission Gully to have a quarry so close to the works”, says Wayne Scott from the Aggregate and Quarry Association. “There’s less impact on communities and road users.”

While it reduces truck movements on the wider Wellington road network, the Transmission

Work continues on the Transmission Gully Project.

Gully project also built a secure access road with a sealed surface to prevent dust movement and reduce noise from the operation.

All the rock needed for Transmission Gully has to be extracted by the end of this year.

hard to mitigate the impact on locals, with constant noise and vibration monitoring and strict rules around nightworks.

Johnsonville teacher gets BLAKE opportunity

Johnsonville teacher Janet Valentine from St Brigid’s School has been selected for the 2020 BLAKE Inspire for Teachers programme.

On Monday, Janet will join 32 other primary and intermediate teachers from all over New Zealand in Auckland for the five-day, residential programme. BLAKE Inspire for Teachers aims to help teachers develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and learn practical ways to integrate environmental education into their own school programmes.

Learning how future impacts of climate change may affect the environment. Delegates will also take part in a climate change workshop with NIWA. Learning about corporate sustainability and taking part in a workshop with Fuji Xerox and learning about their sustainability strategy.

Friends of Karori Cemetry will host tours for children during the school holidays.

Karori Cemetery tours for school holidays The Friends of Karori Cemetery is offering a special tour of some highlights of Karori Cemetery for children over five-years-old during the school holidays. The tour will include the statue of Mrs Chippy, the cat who accompanied the Shackleton expedition of 1914-1917; the plot of Phyllis Symons for whom we toot in the Hataitai tunnel to ensure her ghost knows we care; a national memorial to those who died in the Tangiwai disaster on Christmas Eve 1953; William

Ward who was gored by a bull at the railway station, and many other heritage features and stories which will appeal to youngsters.

The tours are on Wednesday 30 September and October 7 starting at 10.30am, and will take about 1.5 hours.

Children must of course be accompanied by their carers, and the Friends will ensure there are at least two volunteers to assist with management and safety. The tour will be on walking tracks as well as sealed roadways,

so appropriate footwear is essential.

Bookings for these tours are required - by email to friendsofkaroricemeterytours@ gmail.com Information about meeting place, cancellation arrangements etc. will be provided to those who book.

The Friends are keen to assist young learners to know more about Wellington’s heritage and history, so the only charge for these tours will be gold coin donations to the Friends.

The Newlands Fire Brigade is highly valued in and around Newlands and the community wants the brigade and station to remain in Newlands.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) have long wanted to co-locate the brigade in the Johnsonville station, relocating that capability out of the community they serve.

Drama school students create musical artwork Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School Set and Props students in Newtown have helped create a new musical artwork that will be installed and played by live musicians at the Wellington Botanical Gardens, September 29 to October 11.

Resembling an exotic plant, the Harmonic Tree is a musical instrument with steel strings and percussive fruit and berries. Beneath the surface, which was made almost entirely from discarded packaging materials, the tree houses an array of audio effects processors, all adjustable by tending to twigs, branches and other parts of the

tree, enabling an operator to create electroacoustic soundscapes.

The Harmonic Tree was designed and co-built by Loemis Festival’s Andrew Laking, who is thrilled the tree will get a new life after the Festival was cancelled due to COVID-19.

I encourage residents to take every opportunity to have their view heard on the future of the brigade and station.

A similar situation faced the brigade and community in 2003 and the then local MP, Hon Peter Dunne, walked out of the Prime Minister’s office having made a direct appeal which saved the station. It can be done again.

WOUND CARE For many of us, wounds are a common part of everyday life, with accidents leading to cuts and scratches, grazes, lacerations, blisters and sometimes burns.

These can happen no matter how careful we are or how organised our homes or workplaces can be. A wound occurs when a physical injury to the body breaks the skin or a mucous membrane.

The body responds immediately and begins repairing the wound with the skin closing up and trying to return to normal as soon as possible. The time of repair may only be needed for a very short time and last for a matter of days or it may need to continue for weeks and months, depending on the type and size of the injury.

In the past many wounds have been “fixed” with a plaster, the multipurpose plastic dressing strip. These are fine for small scratches and cuts but there are now many more dressings available for the different types of wounds that can occur.

In the past it was believed that wounds should be kept dry but now it is recommended that to help a wound heal well it should be kept moist. This is because a moist wound environment allows the skin cells to grow more quickly, thus healing and returning to normal in much less time.

The aim of wound care is to stop any bleeding, prevent infection and to restore the health of the tissue. With any wound once any bleeding is stopped it needs to be cleaned. If it is already a clean wound then warm running water or gauze soaked in saline is appropriate to be used.

Medication that affects wound healing includes anti-inflammatory drugs as these can interfere with the body’s natural healing process and hamper the action of immune system cells. Talk to your pharmacist about your medication to see if any that you are prescribed will hinder wound healing.

Wounds that are dressed and kept warm heal faster. Dressings also need to be kept clean so change as necessary, usually not every day but maybe every few days depending on its condition.

See your Self Care pharmacist about the many types of dressings that are available and the most appropriate one for a particular wound or for your first aid kit. Also ask for the Pharmacy Self Care “Wound Care” card to take home and share with the family.

However if the wound is unclean and is contaminated with any dirt, gravel or foreign bodies then these need to be removed so that the wound does not become infected.

It is necessary in these cases to use an antiseptic to wash the area and remove unwanted particles and debris. Talk to your Self Care pharmacist about which antiseptics are available and how to use them.

It is important to try and prevent infection from occurring but if the area of the wound becomes swollen, red, hot and angry then it may be infected and you will need to see your doctor regarding antibiotics.

Wounds caused by burns may occur due to sunlight, flames from fire, scalds, chemical or electrical sources. The affected area must be cooled immediately under cold running tap water for at least 20 to 30 minutes. The use of ice is not recommended in these cases.

Burns can be superficial affecting only the top surface layer of skin or can be much more serious affecting many layers of tissues. Blisters should not be burst and fat, lotions or ointments should be avoided.

There are a number of life style factors that can help with wound healing such as 1) diet 2) exercise 3) medication 4) dressing type 5) warmth. Your diet can affect the speed of the healing process.

Foods associated with wound healing are protein, Vitamin C and Vitamin A and zinc and a diet enriched with these components in your diet can enhance wound healing.

Regular exercise increases blood flow, improves general health and also speeds wound healing.

Show goes on for local actors

The show must go on in Porirua.

This year has been a challenging one for theatre globally. Covid-19 has shut down the West End and Broadway.

But in Porirua, the show must go on. After postponing their production of the stage play “Brassed Off” just before New Zealand entered Level 4 lockdown, Porirua Little Theatre have bounced back and are excited to be bringing a family favorite musical to audiences in the greater Wellington region.

The hills of Porirua will be alive with The Sound of Music this October and November.

The Porirua Little Theatre production features a cast of 36 from ages six and up, acting, singing and dancing in more than 45 different roles.

And just to keep it “all in the family”, amongst the cast there are nine families who are on stage, backstage, or both, enjoying bringing this story to life once again.

Of these performers a staggering 20 come from the northern suburbs.

Here, she transforms the household of seven motherless children from a place of military discipline to one filled with joy, laughter, and of course, music.

In a world so different from her own, she puts her trust in her faith and brings a family back together.

However, the clouds of war are gathering, and a hard choice must be made about freedom.

Based on the true story of the Von Trapp Singers, this Rodgers & Hammerstein classic is one of the world’s most loved musicals.

Away from all the Hollywood glitz

and glamour, director Rob Ormsby wants to look at “the story behind the story”.

“I wanted to portray the real story behind the musical”, says Ormsby.

“Obviously “The Sound of Music” is so well-loved that you can’t stray too far from expectations, but especially in light of what is happening in the world right now, I wanted to focus on the human relationships more”. “This show is about hope”, continues Ormsby, “having it, losing it, regaining it again. It’s about finding strength through belief or faith; whether it’s in ourselves, in others, or in a higher purpose.

And it’s about love; and how the love of music can bring a family together”. “By stripping away the traditional big set pieces, we allow the audience to experience a close up an engaging story of love and hope”, Ormsby concludes, “And just to make it extra special, this year, is the 60th anniversary of the Movie. I can’t think of anything more appropriate for Porirua Little Theatre to be performing ... we all need this right now”.

Buying or Selling First?

Hey everyone! Hope you survived the windy weekend. We had an extremely exciting open home on Sunday with over 100+ groups of interested buyers visiting one property, and the wind showed great interest too. Luckily, we always have multiple people running open homes which meant that we had three people engaging with buyers and taking details and one person dedicated to chasing hats and shoes (yes, shoes! Shoes were being blown around) – Welcome to Wellington!

This week we would like to answer a question from our emails; “I’m looking to upsize, should I sell or buy first?” This is a great question and is a common dilemma that many homeowners face. I think everyone’s situations are unique and you should seek personalised advice from Your Friend in Real Estate. As a general approach you could consider the following two options.

Buying First You can take your time to secure the next house that you like. Especially in today’s market, it may take you a while to firstly find a house you like and then successfully secure it. If your situation does not allow you to own two houses at the same time, buying first (with a long settlement) does mean that you will have to sell. This would usually be an issue in a slower selling market, but this is much less of an issue in a today’s market. If you are a fussy buyer and it is very rare that you find houses that you like, then I would suggest considering this option.

Selling First If finding and buying a house is not stressful for you, then selling first is a great way to know your exact budget. It allows you to take your time and run the perfect selling campaign in the best conditions.

We often we sell houses for $100k+ more

than what our clients were expecting, which means that our sellers were able to increase their buying budget – which makes house hunting much easier.

The problem we have in today’s market is around supply (houses for sale). With record low interest rates and very little on the market, most potential home-sellers are opting to buy first, further amplifying the property boom in our area. More and more people are buying their first home and less and less houses are for sale – creating the market that we are currently in. Until all the people who are ‘buying first’ decide to all come to market and sell at the same time – the massive imbalance in supply and demand will continue to fuel the current market.

Inner Wheel Wellington gives rugs to charity Wellington Inner Wheel Club have produced 28 rugs which have been distributed to Stand for Children, formerly Health Camps and Women’s Refuge.

Originally, they were destined to go to Inner Wheel Clubs in Australia for distribution to Bushfire victims.

Unfortunately, because of Covid 19, this became difficult.

Inner Wheel Clubs welcome women who are looking for friendship and the opportunity to be involved in community service.

Members hear interest-

ing speakers, hold coffee mornings, play Mah-jong or Bridge, join in craft or book groups, go walking together and go on visits to gardens and interesting places.

Members can be found collecting for charities on street corners, sewing silky pillows for the Cancer Society, baking food for Look Good Feel Better workshops, helping with Daffodil Day to name a few of the dozens of charitable organizations they support.

The Wellington chapter meets for dinner on the last Tuesday of each month at

the Wellington Club.

Welly Bike Fest pedals into gear North Wellington residents are checking their brakes, pumping up tyres and fastening helmets for this October’s Kia Eke Paihikara Tātou Greater Welly Bike Fest, a month that celebrates climate friendly forms of transport.

Greater Wellington Regional Council Travel Choice Coordinator Amelia Wilkins says the aim of the festival is to get the hapori whānui (wider community) out on their bikes and making the most of their regional backyard.

“We’re encouraging people to take the next step on their bike journey. For some, that could be jumping on a bike for the first time, or thinking about the riding route they’ll take to the shops,

school or work,” says Amelia.

Greater Welly Bike Fest will be run in close collaboration with a number of local councils and community partners where there will be a range of events for all ages and skill sets.

“We’ll have a ‘cargo bike picnic’ to show the many ways people can carry their children on bikes. Also, we’ll be celebrating the opening of a new track at Carrington Park in Carterton where there will be obstacle courses for tamariki and e-bike demos for whānau during the school holidays across the region,” Amelia says.

There is a focus on bike security, so people will have an

opportunity to learn about the best locks available and how to register their bikes to guard them against theft.

A key event in the festival will be the Queen Elizabeth Park family day which will take place on Labour Day. Greater Wellington Transport Committee Chair, Roger Blakeley says, “These events are a great opportunity for passionate or first time cyclists to come together, to share some skills and laughs.

“We also want to give people the tools to choose a bike over a car for short trips, which helps to reduce carbon emissions and ease congestion,”

Johnsonville fall to Upper Hutt

Johnsonville suffered a 33-18 loss to the Upper Hutt Rams on Saturday.

Johnsonville were unable to beat Upper Hutt in back-to-back games in their ninth v 10th playoff on Saturday.

After a commanding win at Helston Park seven days ago, Upper Hutt prevailed at home 33-18.

Points were much harder to come by.

Utility back Andrew Ellis scored Johnsonville’s opening try.

However, the visitors scored two tries of their own and earned a 14-8 lead at halftime.

Waisea Yabakivou crossed in the

corner and Stephen Nelson added a third try.

However, Upper Hutt were able to make the best of having the wind at their back and push through to a commanding victory.

Johnsonville will look back on a season where they were able to earn two wins and lose three more by less than seven points.

Coach Roy Kinikinilau pushed for consistentcy throughout the campaign and they showed it in glimpses.

Certainly the club has some positives to build upon for the coming seasons.

Steam Incorporated - a Kapiti icon Steam Incorporated is an Incorporated Society, dedicated to the restoration to full working order of ex-New Zealand Government Railways locomotives and rolling stock to provide unique rail journeys on the KiwiRail railway lines of New Zealand.

Formed nearly fifty years ago in 1972 Steam Incorporated is based at Paekakariki on the Kapiti coast near Wellington, on the North Island of New Zealand, where its primary purpose is to rebuild and maintain

heritage railway equipment to the high standard required for main-line operation.

As the name implies, the main focus is on steam motive power, and it is usual for Steam Incorporated to have at least two of its steam locomotives in full operational condition. By Dr Tim Halpine Podiatrist Keeping fit is a great way for young people to avoid serious conditions such as diabetes.

Dr Tim Halpine, of Active Feet Podiatry, says type 2 diabetes is increasingly common amongst teenagers, a shocking trend.

“An important tool in the prevention of diabetes is regular aerobic exercise, like walking,” Tim says. “In this sense, walking is the best prescription!”

Type 2 diabetes is much more prevalent among young people who are overweight and unfit. Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar level is too high, resulting in damage to organ systems.

Regular walking helps calf muscles pump blood back to the heart and improves circulation. It burns calories, helps to maintain ideal body weight, control glucose levels and prevent the onset of adult diabetes.

“To participate regularly and comfortably in a walking programme, feet need to be

maintained and well supported,” Tim says.

“Podiatry plays a key role in ensuring walking is comfortable and easily achievable.”

Many children who complain of sore legs suffer from flat feet and may need to see a podiatrist in order to exercise happily and stay fit.

Dr Greg Bond - I graduated from Newcastle university in the UK in 2009, and moved to New Zealand – originally for a working holiday - in 2011. Since then I have worked around NZ in hospital medicine and anaesthesia, before settling on General Practice in 2016. I am now working towards gaining my fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. The most rewarding parts of General Practice for me are the diversity of people & their problems that I get meet every day, and working to help find solutions to these. Anu completed her undergraduate studies in the UK and worked in cancer research before moving to New Zealand. She then completed her medical training from the University of Auckland in 2013. Thiem tennis’s next bright light?

It’s a calculated gamble but perhaps Dominic Thiem’s breakthrough US Open victory last Monday could see him as the heir-apparent to the men’s tennis throne.

The 27-year-old Austrian won a pulsating five-set final, coming back from two sets to love down in the process against Alexander Zverev.

Now, by no means is he set to dominate the game like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have as a trio for the

past 15 years but perhaps he could be the transitional champion over the next five years.

The big-hitting Austrian is a threat on all surfaces and has made three other finals, once at the Australian Open and twice at the French.

He has powerful ground strokes, a one-handed back hand and excellent defensive instincts.

Thiem often uses heavy, penetrating

groundstrokes to construct points and outlast his opponents.

He has a long take-back on both wings, and the top-spin he produces on his groundstrokes allows him to both attack and defend well. Thiem also possesses a strong serve, capable of reaching 145 mph (233 km/h).

Somebody has to be the next in line and Thiem certainly has the game to be much more than a one-hit wonder.

It shows great mental and physical strength

to come back from two sets down in a grand slam final when you have lost the past three. While he did not have to beat any of the aforementioned trio to get his slam, Father Time is on his side.

I f he ca n stay hea lthy a nd consistent, there is no reason why he could not carve out a decent career with four or five grand slams to his name similar to what Naomi Osaka is doing in the twilight of the Serena Williams era in the women’s game.

Wadestown School Out of Zone Enrolment 2021

APPLICATIONS OPEN The Board of Trustees invites applications from parents out of zone who wish to enrol their children at Wadestown School for 2021. Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office or at www.wadestown.school.nz Students who live in the home zone are entitled to enrol at the school.

Limited places are available in Years 1-8. Where there are more applications for enrolment than there are places available the Board are required to fill any vacant out of zone places by ballot.

Applications from out of zone students will be processed in the following order of priority: •

Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of current children at the school.

Priority will then be given to applicants who are siblings of former children of the school.

•

Priority will then be given to applicants who are children of Board employees.

•

Priority will then be given to other applicants.

It remains a case of hold all tickets as the Men’s Central Football League competition revealed another thrilling chapter in the 18 part mystery over the weekend.

The top three places have never been in doubt and in reality it’s a two horse race now between Western Suburbs and Miramar who play each other in the last round on October 10.

But for now, that’s a million miles away with three rounds still to play and Wests holding a 2 point lead over the Miramar men.

Miramar did not disappoint after an unfathomable 1-0 loss to Wairarapa United last weekend. Unfortunately Waterside Karori drew the short straw and were on the wrong side of an 8-2 thrashing. Western Suburbs did enough to win 2-1 over Wellington Olympic and in doing so, kept top spot while Olympic have a nine point buffer in third place. Lower Hutt and Napier City Rovers cancelled each other out with a 2-2 draw and are safe but marooned in mid table.

Petone have found their rhythm at the right time with an important 3-1 win at home over Stop Out, who remain in last place for the second week in a row on 11 points.

Wairarapa are keeping close company on 12 points and Petone are likely feeling more assured and closely guarding their 15 points.

Wairarapa were not in the hunt this week and had to travel all the way over the hill to Alex Moore Park to collect a 5-0 loss at the hands of New World Newlands North Wellington. The Masterton side could not have been short of transport options because

they well and truly parked the bus from the very first minute of the match in a very deliberate tactical move. For a while there it looked like the plan could have worked but Riley Manuel opened the proceedings with a very fine strike in the 21st minute for Norths to keep the local fans appeased.

It took until the 52nd minute though before a second helping arrived courtesy of a close range header from Marco Lorenz.

Jesse Randall provided the main course with a brace 15 and 16 minutes later and Nathan Simes served up dessert with the fifth and final goal, eight minutes from time.

North Wellington remain in fourth place for another week at least.

On Sunday the Newlands Arms North Wellington Men’s Premier side had an important 3-0 win at home over Victoria University which coupled with other results, cements North’s place in the league for 2021. It was by far a comfortable win with Matt Tod - Smith’s goal after 11 minutes desperately searching for company after a very long wait. Help eventually arrived in the 76th and 78th minutes thanks to Sam Gillespie and Max Winterton and the North Wellington faithful could finally relax a little.

Wainuiomata clinched the Premier League title with a game to spare after a last minute injury time goal over Miramar Rangers, 4-3.

The Innkeeper Johnsonville North Wellington Women brought their season to a close with a 2-1 loss to Waterside Karori in the Kelly Cup knock out competition.

Nicola Ross’s equaliser at half time to Sarah Willette’s opening goal for Karori was not enough with Karori’s Kaley Ward netting the winner in the 82nd minute.

If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, selection will be by ballot. If a ballot for out of zone places is required, it will be held on Friday 23rd October 2020 under external supervision. Parents will be informed as to the outcome of the ballot immediately following the ballot being held.
