By: Gerald Rillstone It’s not often nearly 10 percent of a school role are twins but for 2021 Wainuiomata Intermediate School has nine sets of twins with almost all of them identical.

Twins double the fun Continued from page 1 Principal Craig Sharp says this is the first time he has seen this number of twins enrolled at the school and it has come as quite a surprise this year.

“There is always one or two and we started going through the role for this year and thought hang on there was another one and another one and the fact that they are almost all identical as well was a big surprise and it is mostly year sevens,” Craig says.

“Because they have come

from all the different schools in the area no one had seen it as unusual until they all came together here. Just a few more and they could have had a class of twins.”

Some of the student twins admitted to having a bit of fun swapping classes and twins Kevie and Glen weren’t all that keen to be dressed the same but all in all this group of nine doubles were happy to be part of a pair.

Every year in New Zealand

around 1000 couples find themselves expecting twins, triplets or occasionally even more babies.

Twins account for more than 90 per cent of multiple births.

There are two types of twins – identical (monozygotic) and fraternal (dizygotic). To form identical twins, one fertilised egg (ovum) splits and develops two babies with exactly the same genetic information.

Identical twins are always the same sex, so if your twins are identical, you’ll have two girls

or two boys and they’ll look very alike.

This differs from fraternal twins, where two eggs (ova) are fertilised by two sperm and produce two genetically unique children, who are no more alike than i nd iv idu a l sibl i ngs b or n a t d i f fe r e n t t i m e s , t h i s is more common than identical twins and your babies may be the same sex or different sexes. Contrary to popular belief, the incidence of twins doesn’t skip generations.

inbrief news PM’s Education Excellence Awards It’s time to recognise the outstanding work early learning services, kōhanga reo, schools and kura do to support children and young people to succeed, Minister of Education Chris Hipkins said today.

The 2021 Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards are now open through until April 16.

There are four main award categories: Excellence in Engaging, Excellence in Leading, Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and Excellence in Wellbeing Education. The Prime Minister’s Supreme Award is given to the best overall entry from these four categories.

There is also an Education Focus Prize which this year will be awarded to an education service that can demonstrate excellence in environmental and sustainability education.

Finalists will be notified in June and the winners will be announced at an award ceremony dinner in September.

Ka Ora, Ka Ako healthy school lunches By: Gerald Rillstone Schools throughout Wainuiomata will recive free lunches daily for students as part of the Ka Ora, Ka Ako, healthy school lunches programme.

As part of the Covid response the programme aims to reduce food insecurity by providing access to a nutritious lunch in school every day.

At Pukeatua School acting principal Topsy Remuera says the roll out of the programme has gone well.

“Our first week back was a bit tough getting the message about the lunches out and we are hoping they can come and explain to

some whanau what it is all about because some of them don’t read or understand the literature, and so they can see the big picture because some whanau still wanted to give their kids lunches and the free lunch could go to someone who is poor,” Topsy says.

She says the suppliers have been amazing with constant feed back supplied to them and all allergies and religious requirements are catered for, each lunch is labelled and all that is needed is for the lunch packages to be distributed around the school.

The packaging is collected each day so there is no need for any clean up or disposal of packaging

Founders Day celebration A near perfect day of weather provided the perfect opportunity for Scouting Founders’ Day Fun. February the 22nd is the Birthday of both Robert Baden-Powell and his wife Olave and in New Zealand it is celebrated outdoors free from stiff ceremony, instead some good old fashioned out door fun with a mud slide.

With a gold coin donation to take a ride the celebration provided a chance to raise some funds and produce a lot of smiling faces.

“In other countries they do flag breaks and stuff like that but we have it in the middle of summer and so it would be a wasted opportunity not to do something outdoors and fun,” 1st Wainuiomata Scout Leader Meredith Odea says.

Membership for the group has been fairly steady Meredith says but they could always do with a little more help.

“Finding leaders and getting parents to come along and help supervise is always a bit hard but we are doing quite well with around 30 scouts in

the group.”

Greater Wellington will bring farm to whanau with Battle Hill Family Farm Day on Saturday 6 March, a free event in the council’s jam-packed summer events calendar giving people a chance to experience a taste of rural life.

Greater Wellington Councillor Jenny Brash says, “These days, especially for our youngsters, there’s a lot of interest about where the food we see at supermarkets actually comes from.

“Family Farm day is a laid-back

way to find out what farming is all about and strengthen that understanding and appreciation for the origin of our kai. People will get to feed eels, have a cuddle with pet lambs, and learn about the missing steps between farm to table with a cooking demonstration, where a local farmer will talk about which parts of the animal are used for our favourite cuts of meat.

“Whanau will want to bring cash to take part in Wellington Riding

for the Disabled’s fundraising sausage sizzle and saddle up for some unbridled fun on a guided horse trek, with the proceeds from both going towards helping people experience the benefits of horse therapy.

“Wellington Young Farmers will help visitors make hay while the sun shines by running quintessential farmyard games like egg and spoon races, gumboot throwing and classic sack races,” she says.

Battle Hill Farm Forest Park

is the perfect setting to take it all in: It’s home to rolling paddocks dotted with grazing sheep, lush native bush, and a historical farm complete with a working woolshed.

“The presence of a working farm on regional park land is unique to Battle Hill. Here we have a beautiful native forest reserve co-existing alongside a sustainable, functioning farm. It’s really special to be able to experience both of these strikingly different

landscapes in the same location.

The remote beauty of this park means there is no cell phone reception on site. As this is a working farm, dogs must be left at home.

Council’s carbon footprint set to drop Hutt City Council is set to reduce its carbon footprint with the installation of a flare that will cut methane emissions at its Silverstream Landfill.

The flare will burn off methane, created by the breakdown of organic waste, before it reaches the atmosphere. It will also significantly reduce council’s liability under the Emissions Trading Scheme, as well as reducing unpleasant odours drifting off-site.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that is significantly more potent than carbon dioxide at absorbing heat.

Over the last few years, the landfill has emitted around 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent gases per year, accounting for the majority of

council’s greenhouse gas emissions.

A resource consent for the flare was issued by Greater Wellington Regional Council last week and the flare has been installed and is ready to go.

A power plant at the landfill, owned

by LMS Energy Ltd, already collects and uses large amounts of methane to generate electricity. The flare will augment the power plant’s processing of methane and maintain methane destruction when the power plant is shut down for maintenance.

Council’s Chair of its Climate Change and Sustainability Committee Josh Briggs says the new flare is a significant step towards achieving council’s goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to zero

by 2050.

“Our council is acutely aware of the urgency needed to cut emissions if we’re to truly confront climate change and ensure we have a thriving city for future generations.”

“This initiative is one of many areas we’re taking action on to reach our goal of cutting Council’s emissions to zero, and it also makes a modest contribution to reducing the wider city’s emissions,” he says.

Calls for community views on low carbon public transport Public consultation on the draft Regional Public Transport Plan 2021 (RPTP) is open and Greater Wellington wants the community’s views on improving our region’s public transport network to help drive decarbonisation of vehicles, improve safety and customer experience, and increase public transport usage across the region.

The proposed RPTP outlines Greater Wellington’s ambitions to reduce public transport emissions by more than 60% by 2030, drive

a 40% increase in ‘mode shift’ to public transport by 2030, while maintaining a customer satisfaction target of 92% or higher.

Greater Wellington Transport Committee Chair Roger Blakeley says, “Our first point of call is to actively reduce public transport emissions by accelerating the decarbonisation of our region’s bus fleet and pursuing additional electrification opportunities across both rail and ferry.

“This will include aiming to have over 100 electric buses by

2023, with a clear target to have all core bus services electric by 2030.”

The RPTP guides the design and delivery of public transport services, information and infrastructure across the Wellington region and is developed in collaboration with our community.

It’s about creating a framework that prioritises customer satisfaction, accessibility, and health and safety, Cr Blakeley says.

“To support our communities to make sustainable and active

choices, we’re advocating for a high quality, high capacity and high frequency core network.

This will leverage the full benefits of various regional programmes such as Let’s Get Wellington Moving, the Wellington Regional Growth Framework and the Regional Rail Strategic Direction,” he says.

“There are also some considerable customer experience improvements in the pipeline including improved real time information and simpler, inte-

grated fares across rail, bus and ferry that will be delivered by the National Ticketing programme.

“We really encourage the community to jump online and have their say, your views are really important to shaping the future of public transport in our region.”

According to Wally Richards, rain brings down nitrogen from the atmosphere which is also a boost for the plants but not containing chlorine means that the reduced microbe colonies in the soil have a chance to populate again.

Last week we talked about the benefits of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) and how it assisted plants to be healthier and increased the nutritional value of your food crops.

Some gardeners asked whether it would assist with leaf diseases such as black spot and rusts.

The answer is that it can but it also depends on several other factors because there is no golden bullet that is going to fix problems when there are conditions or situations which are causing the problems.

For instance at the end of the season (which we are quickly heading to) conditions such as powdery mildew and other leaf diseases are going to attack your plants such as roses, pansy, zucchini as they are finishing you the season and leaf diseases are Natures Cleaners helping to breakdown and aid the composting of foliage that done its dash for the season.

Annuals of course will die and disappear and perennials such as roses will rest till the new season in the spring.

We can build up the health of our plants and make them more resistant to diseases during the growing season.

As we saw last week that a two weekly spray of MBL can make the world of difference to our plants because we are supplying a range of elements and minerals that are likely lacking in our soils.

The soil is a very big factor in how well our plants preform and if you don’t have soil teeming with beneficial microbes, breaking down the nutrients so that plants can take them up you are in a sense starving your plants, no matter how much food you are throwing at them.

Soil life self generates if you allow it to happen so you don’t have to do anything to make it happen other than maybe applying products such as Mycorrcin (It is a special food for soil life, microbes and beneficial fungi) What you have to do is stop killing the soil life. There are 3 factors that harm and kill your friends in the soil.

The first and most often applied to the soil in the growing season is chlorinated tap water.

The chlorine in the tap water is there to kill bacteria that might give you a tummy ache but in our garden we want those bacteria and we zap them with our hose.

I will give you an example that you will have seen countless times and likely never gave it another thought.

In the spring with ample showers of rain your garden plants come away and in the main look brilliant and healthy.

Later on the rains stop and you get out the garden hose and very soon that healthy sparkle has disappeared and leaf diseases start to show.

Then after a dry period of hose watering we have a nice period of rain and hello the plants preform and have a healthy sparkle again (till we have to use chlorinated water again).

Rain brings down nitrogen from the atmosphere which is also a boost for the plants but not containing chlorine (we hope) means that the reduced microbe colonies in the soil have a chance to populate again.

They have a life cycle of about eight hours so in a day we can see three generations happening which is billions of helpers in your soil.

It costs $140 to get a 10 micron carbon bonded filter and housing to simply snap onto your outside tap which removes all the chlorine out of 16000 litres of water approximately (depending how much of the poison your water supplier sticks into the water) In some areas for and average garden you should get one or two seasons out of a filter for $40 replacement.

In some areas I have found about 2-3 months use only before you need to replace. Sediment in the water also drastically shortens the life of the filter.

Heavy handed use of man-made fertilisers, chemical rescue sprays and herbicides also harm soil life, knocking back their populations.

It is easy to tell if you have a great soil with lots of soil life as it will have an

abundance of earth worms.

This means also you are applying organic material to the soil instead of harmful acidic fertilisers.

Animal manures, sheep pellets, blood and bone, compost made from non-green waste (green waste composts which may contain herbicides).

A little man made fertiliser sparingly applied to give a growth boost does not cause too much harm for the benefit of the growth gained. Slow release types are far superior to the General powder types, which I call the fast foods of gardening.

They cause great damage over constant use locking up in the soil which means you have not only harmed the soil you have also harmed your wallet, to all over disadvantage.

Another thing I have learnt in recent times is the application of silica to the soil which assists plants to take up minerals that are locked out without silica presents.

Sand of course is silica and you can also apply silica soil drench which the silica is from diatemaciuos earth.

I have always had an understanding that an equal mix of clay soil with sand would make a very good growing medium for healthy plants.

The mix would also reduce the disadvantages of the two when on their own.

Another excellent tool for obtaining plant health is Wallys Perkfection for Roses.

The active ingredient of Perkfection is Phosphite ion or Phosphonic acid.

I describe it as a tonic for plants, building the immune system to help overcome many plant diseases or prevent the same.

Magic on Buxus for recovery or prevention of the nasty Buxus disease and also a cure/prevention for silver leaf disease as long as the disease has not advanced too far.

Applied only monthly it will assist in helping to prevent many disease problems.

Carter calls time on stellar career It took a while for Dan Carter to win me over at first.

I was a child who grew up loving Andrew Mehrtens and who thought he would be comparing all future Canterbury and Crusaders’ No 10s.

It’s fair to say after two decades, I’ll spend the rest of my life comparing not just red and black No 10s to the boy from Southbridge but all future All Blacks pivots as well.

Carter announced his retirement from all rugby on social media on Saturday night, though his

All Black career ended with the victorious 2015 Rugby World Cup final in which he was named man of the match.

Carter’s performance in that victory was masterful.

When the team needed a steadying influence, Carter kicked a drop goal to assure victory.

However, it was Carter’s complete domination of the British Lions at Wellington in 2005 that will live long in the memory of most fans.

It’s unlikely there’s ever been a more dominant display in a big

match in rugby.

He scored 33 points in the 48-18 victory in which British scribes referred to him as a genius.

His chip-kick and regather down the touch line for his second try is and forever will be iconic in All Blacks folklore.

Even as he aged, his form erratic, Carter answered his critics in the 2015 final.

That’s the mark of a champion.

Did it help he always had a forward pack that featured Richie McCaw, Tony Woodcock and

Keven Mealamu? Absolutely but his calm nature and ability to be both attacking threat and backline conductor has not been replicated since.

He achieved what many All Blacks say is the most important part of playing for the team, that is to leave the jersey in a better place than when you found it.

To achieve that in the All Blacks No 10 jersey is no small feat and an appreciation for just how good he was, won’t be fully appreciated for many decades to come.

The age old saying is that you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.

In Dan Carter, we had a once in a lifetime talent.

Someone who handles the pressure of being a great All Black, someone who never got too big for his boots and maintained high standards until the end.

Time will tell if he has any further involvement in professional rugby but few can argue his contribution to rugby as a player has been immense.

Missed opportunity

It was a case of a missed opportunity on Saturday as Wainuiomata first eleven drew with East Suburbs at home. Bowling first Wainui were in control as they had Easts in big trouble at 80 for 6 on a great batting surface at Bryan Heath. What came next was some fantastic batting which saw an unbeaten 200 run partnership, with both Easts batters reaching 100 runs. Wainui had their chances with run outs but the batting performance for the 7th wicket was dominant and meant Wainui had to chase 290 to win in 45 overs which was always going to be a tough target. In reply, after 45 overs Wainui were 201 for 5 wickets and the match was drawn.

Tom Carter was top scorer with 61 and Jason Logan the best bowler with 3 for 84 off 19 overs.

Wainui second eleven bowled first against Easts in the first day of their 2 day game and were very happy to bowl Easts out for 107 with Chris Ingram having best

Filiva’a Tafuna’i poised and ready. Photo Gerald Rillstone. figures of 3 for 21 to continue his good form. In reply, Wainui are in complete control reaching 283 for 7 with Hewson Whiting batting superbly for 90 and next week Wainui will be pushing hard for 10 wickets and an early finish.

The 40 over team had a big win against Stokes Valley, with a win by 6 wickets. Bowling first Adam Young was the best of the Wainui

bowlers with 3 for 12 and saw Stokes Valley dismissed for only 100. In reply, Wainui only needed 21 overs to get the win with Brent Baikie reaching 41 not out.

It is Old Timers day at the cricket club this week so all former players and supporters are welcome to Bryan Health park with the first eleven playing on #1 and the second eleven on #2.

A memorable moment with Ali

It might have been only five minutes but meeting Muhammad Ali over forty years ago has been an enduring memory for Michael Ngarotata.

The former Wainuiomata truck driver has a moment of celebration this time of year every year because it marks a moment when he met his hero.

Ali had retired from boxing a few years earlier and was traveling to New Zealand meeting with the clubs and the boxing hierarchy when Michael made the trip to Wellington Airport to catch a glimpse of his hero.

“I followed him through the terminal and he was chanting I want to meet a big black brother and then I pointed to me and with his fingers motioned for

me to come to him, it was amazing,” Michael says.

“I came out of the crowd and nearly fell over getting there and did the Ali shuffle and he said that’s not how you do it and he showed them and they loved it, and then I popped him a few times on the shoulder and he said is that all you’ve got brother.”

The pair talked for about five minutes about boxing and with Ali asking who is your favourite boxer, Michael replied “he is standing in front of me,” which made the big man laugh.

“He did say boxing isn’t good for anyone but I told him it has been pretty good for you,” he says.
