Award winning pathway Continued from page 1 Senior Constable Brendon Ronald “It has been great it has been really good for the kids and also the school to have police involvement without us coming along for other issues,” he says.

“Each week at least one of us comes along and joins in with the class with class work and personal training stuff as well.”

With the module the students learn a range of things including mental health, interviewing techniques for witnesses.

“It is a pre-college course for people that want to go to the police college next year and they work through it and get credits in the process,” he says.

“It is not just front-line uniform

stuff it is also for those interested in non sworn work as well.”

The programme has been running for two years in other parts of the country and recently won an award at the Diversity Works Awards.

New Zealand Police’s initiative to help reach a broader and more diverse group of potential recruits has resulted in a win at the Diversity Works awards.

The awards celebrate organisations across New Zealand that demonstrate diversity and inclusion in the workplace and the Police Pathway Programme for Year 13 students took out the ‘Emerging Diversity and Inclusion’ category, which honoured an initiative less than two years old.

At the start of the season you never would have picked Wainuiomata to be lifting the shield in the opening five games. They had two wins and three losses sitting near the foot of the table. They had some very unlucky losses and the boys knew they had the quality in the squad to be doing much better. From there they went on a magical run of eight wins in a row with the last of those wins beating top placed Upper Hutt to drag the leaders back to within one point of Wainuiomata.

With two games to go there was only one point in it, but when Upper Hutt slipped to bottom placed Seatoun, Wainuiomata knew if they could win on Sunday against Miramar they would be lifting the Venus Shield. Wainuiomata had it all to play for but so did Miramar, sitting in third to bottom close to the relegation zone.

The game was an absolute cracker, Miramar had a couple of Team Wellington players in the starting line up and Wainuiomata had a few of their own superstars who were going toe to toe with each other in what was a game

In the second half Miramar’s quality came through going 2-1 up and then quickly after to 3-1 up. With only 14 minutes on the clock many thought it wasn’t Wainuiomata’s day knowing even a draw wouldn’t wrap the title up.

However, Wainuiomatas import, George King thought differently when he popped up in the box to slot calmly home to make it 3-2.

The mood changed and Wanuio-

mata grabbed the ball and rushed it back to half way. A few minutes later Jared Mitchel hit an absolute screamer from 30 yards to draw it all up at 3-3. The game was all but done deep into injury time when goalkeeper Reed Collingwood booted the ball all the way to George King where he took the ball down and slotted home to win the title in a very dramatic fashion.

They will now go to the play off games against either New Plymouth or Whanganui to book themselves a spot in next years central league for the first time in more than two decades.

Wainuiomata High School students take action By: Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata High School students Tiaki Nager, Keita Moses, Emma Jaide gray and Nataahia Pasene are working on their NCEA level one Maori Activism studies and decided to do a social action to promote social justice and human rights.

Tiaki Nager says as a group they decided to take action on social issues which are poverty and lack of resources.

“We looked at how we could

help and we had three different ideas. Our first one was volunteering to help Kokiri the organisation, and another one was raising money by selling merchandise and the other one was running a bake sale to raise funds,” Tiaki says.

“We choose to volunteer to help Kokiri.”

With the decision made the group decided to head down to Saint Peters Church in Wise Street Wainuiomata and get to work.

“They had heaps of food and sanitary items and we helped package food and made up boxes for the day,” Emma Jaide says.

“It felt good to be helping people in the community.

Keita says doing the course raised their awareness of New Zealand history and events that have taken place in New Zealand.

“Things like the Foreshore and Seabed bill was really interesting and it is nice to be

more politically aware of the things that were going on at the time and helps us to understand the issues that have come out of it.”

“We found out that the government at the time was going to legislate to say that if it was unclear who owned the foreshore and seabed then they would make it Crown owned.”

“It got changed to nobody owning it and I think that is fair and much fairer than the Crown owning it,” Keita says.

Following the Government’s alert level 1 announcement Metlink has confirmed that face coverings will not be mandatory on board bus, ferry and train services from 22 September 2020.

General Manager of Metlink Scott Gallacher says while some passengers might continue to wear face coverings out of personal preference that the focus for all passengers should now be on personal hygiene measures and tracking journeys.

Metlink is also encouraging all passengers to log their travel, using the Government’s COVID-19 tracing app for contact tracing purposes.

Progress on new mall site There has been some great progress made at the Wainuiomata Countdown site with a ceremony to bless the site attended by the Mayor and Council staff, Countdown representatives and mana whenua.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry attended the site blessing, and is excited to see progress being made on the site.

Rangatahi Maori to benefit from Massey programme Massey University researchers running a four-year programme aiming to improve the hauoraoranga (health-social) services for rangatahi Maori have been granted nearly $1.4 million from the Health Research Council of New Zealand.

The Tihei Rangatahi programme will follow on from a partnership that has been in progress for more than two years between Massey health researchers and Kokiri health and social services. It looks at tailoring health and social services specifically for rangatahi in the Wainuiomata and Lower Hutt region.

Some of the current programmes Kokiri offer to 10 to 17-year-olds include after school and school holiday programmes, high school transition, advisory and leadership and environmental awareness.

But they have found a gap in the hauora-oranga services being offered for rangatahi Maori – something Massey’s Dr Tupa’ilevaililigi Ridvan Firestone and her team want to change.

Dr Firestone, who will lead the project, says the services may need more mental health resources (or support) and information about lifestyle practices, such as healthy eating. Part of their research will be discovering what the priorities are for rangatahi, in terms of their wellbeing. From there, the team will co-design a health wellness programme.

“The grant gives us an awesome opportunity to work together to enhance health outcomes and reduce inequity for Maori, in terms of codesigning a health services that is relevant for rangatahi Maori – we will be able to do that with Kokiri staff, rangatahi and their whanau.”

She says the researchers, rangatahi and the programme kaimahi (mentors) will work and learn from each other through the planning, designing and implementing processes of the programme.

Kokiri is part of the Takiri Mai te Ata Whanau Ora Collective which represents different aspects of the services provided for residents and

Maori in the region. The collective will advise the study, in terms of the direction it goes and what they believe will best support whanau and the community.

Finally the long planned Acting Out show The Wizard of Oz will get underway next week with the lifting of Covid restrictions to level one.

Show director Jeremy Yuile says rather than cancel the show earlier

in the year they have hung on for as long as possible to allow all the hard work children and parents have put in to be put on show.

“We had contingencies for level 2 and level 1 but if it was level three again that’s it,” Jeremy says.

Next weekend will be all guns blazing when they set up for a

full dress rehearsal and technical rehearsal.

three years,We started at the Wainui Little Theatre and my daughter was in some of their shows but they weren’t really doing shows for kids and so I thought lets start a kids one and it has been really successful.

We had about 20 kids at our first ever rehearsal and now we have a waiting list in double digits for

hole muffin tin. Sift flour, baking powder and Gregg’s Ground Cinnamon into a mixing bowl. Stir in wholemeal flour and brown sugar.

In a separate bowl, whisk together melted butter, milk and egg. Pour into the dry ingredients. Add the blueberries and mix just to combine all the ingredients.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared muffin tin. Bake for 17-20 minutes, until the muffins spring back when lightly pressed. Allow muffins to stand in the tin for 5 minutes before removing to a cake rack to cool. *If the berries are frozen cooking time will be approx.

Te para me te hangarua Rubbish and recycling Rubbish and recycling is changing next year A new weekly kerbside rubbish and fortnightly recycling service, paid for through rates, will be in place from 1 July 2021.

How will it work?

How much will it cost?

Recycling

Recycling charges will increase to approximately $105 per year.

This breaks down to $2.02 per week.

For recycling, you will get a 240-litre wheelie bin for mixed recycling, and a 45-litre crate for glass both collected fortnightly.

Rubbish For rubbish you will get to choose from three options: • A 120-litre bin collected weekly (default option) • An 80-litre bin collected weekly • A 240-litre bin collected weekly

Green waste You’ll also get to choose whether you want a 240L green waste bin, collected every four weeks.

The new rubbish service is cheaper for most people that use more than one rubbish bag per week. The indicative cost is: • $144 a year or $2.77 per week for a 120-litre bin (default option) • $114 a year or $2.19 per week for an 80-litre bin • $288 a year or $5.54 per week for a 240-litre bin So the combined cost of the new recycling system and a weekly rubbish collection service (default 120L bin) is $5.56 per week.

The optional green waste service will be around $95 per year.

Why are we doing this?

Every year, on average, each person in the Wellington region sends more than 600kg of rubbish to landfill. We are overhauling the current system to give you access to a modern rubbish service and a fit-for-purpose recycling service that meets your needs, reduces the amount of litter entering our waterways, and reduces what we send to landfill.

The new system guarantees access to a wheelie bin for rubbish to ALL Lower Hutt households, no matter their income level, including our more than 3,300 Kainga Ora/HNZ tenants. This means people are less likely to put rubbish into their new lidded recycling bin.

Contamination of recycling means it just goes to landfill.

We’ll also be stopping rubbish bags in July 2021, this is because: • There are many health and safety risks for the people who collect rubbish bags.

• Increasing costs of bags could lead to more illegal rubbish dumping.

• Bags are prone to ‘animal strike’, e.g. damage from rats, dogs, and cats • The market is increasingly moving towards alternative collection models with bins.

What’s next?

If you have a contract for your current rubbish collection, make sure you cancel it before 1 July 2021.

Growing from seed: By Wally Richards There are so many people growing vegetables now that the nurseries cannot keep up with the demand so we are seeing a lot of baby seedlings that are not long germinated for sale. There is good aspects of this as the plants will not have been stressed which can make them go to seed prematurely. You take these baby seedling home and put them in a sunny sheltered place outside or into a glasshouse if you have one.

Don’t overwater, this is most important but do not let them dry out either. You can put a meat tray under the punnet and after giving them a small drink (carefully) place some water into the tray. When the tray is dry then repeat. Too much water will make the seedlings soft and can cause rots in the roots and losses. You can also look at growing your own seedlings from seeds.

With flowers and vegetables you have a far greater range from seed selection than you do when compared to buying seedlings. This is especially so when you have a good garden centre with a large seed range or a mail order catalogue such as Kings Seeds and Egmont Seeds.

I browsed the seed stands recently in a store which had two brands of seeds and was surprised about how expensive some seeds had become. The expensive seeds were mainly hybrid types and the reasonably priced seeds were open pollinated.

The difference between the two types is that the hybrid seeds have been specially bred for certain characteristics in the mature plant where open pollinated are seeds that have been collected from mature plants that have pollinated naturally. Hybrid seed grown plants tend to be uniform in growth, all mature about the same time and very similar in appearance and attributes.

These are the seeds most commercial growers use in vegetable and flower production. They are great for the market gardener that requires a field of cabbages all of which are ready to harvest at the same time. For the home

gardener they are a waste of time and space as most of us can’t eat a dozen cabbages in a week or so. We gardeners want our cabbages to reach maturity several days apart so we obtain the full benefit of our efforts and not have lots of waste.

The cheaper seeds give us this as they are open pollinated and will be staggered in their maturity. Besides when it comes to vegetables the open pollinated will likely have far better flavour when grown naturally and have less disease problems. It is from these plants you can allow one to go to seed and collect your own seed for future plantings.

For the more unusual plants that you would like to grow you can expect to pay a little more whether they are open pollinated or hybrids. When you buy some types of seeds such as lettuce, you will not want to sow all the seeds, in fact you may only sow a dozen seeds each time. The remaining seeds should be then stored in their original packet and put inside a sealable glass jar and placed in the fridge. There they will keep for many months and even years with little loss of vitality. The fridge storage of even unopened packets is a good move as this gives the seeds a false winter so when you bring them out to germinate they will think it’s spring and strike quicker.

Use either old punnets or seedling trays to germinate your seeds in dependent on the number of seeds you wish to strike. Don’t worry about the fancy seed raising mixes as a reasonable potting mix is far better and cheaper.

Fill the tray to about two thirds full with the potting mix and then with a kitchen sieve sprinkle a layer of the finer particles of the mix over this. Next evenly as possible sprinkle the number of seeds you wish to germinate. If you want 6 plants to plant out then sow 12 seeds. You can later on select the 6 best plants for growing on.

The other seedlings can be discarded or kept in the tray to grow on for a future planting. Next with the aid

It is a lot of fun growing your own plants from seed and a big savings to boot. of the sieve, sprinkle a little more of the mix to just about cover the seeds. Many seeds prefer a little light to germinate well, so don’t cover too much. Then take a one litre trigger sprayer and place a 20 mils of Magic Botanic Liquid into it with water. Spray this over the mix and seeds to wet the mix. The tray then should be placed on a heat pad or in a warm situation to aid germination. Ensure that the mix is kept moist and not allowed to dry out, misting with the sprayer two or more times a day. The tray should be in good light but not strong direct sunlight.

Germination time varies from plant to plant and often the packet may give an indication of the number of days required. Germination is when the embryo leaves and growing stem appear.

This is the time that many gardeners make mistakes and losses occur.

Embryo seedlings need overhead light as soon as they appear or within at least 12 odd hours. If not, the seedlings will stretch to the natural light and become weak making them vulnerable to dampening off and diseases. The tray should be moved to a glasshouse bench where it is lightly shaded from strong direct sun.

If you do not have a glasshouse then with either an old draw or a polystyrene box and a sheet of glass you have an excellent propagation unit. Place the trays of freshly

germinated seedlings in the box with the sheet of glass over it but slightly raised off the box with ice cream sticks or similar at each corner, to allow heat and moisture to escape. The raised glass should not be too high so as to leave an easy entrance for slugs or snails. The box should be in an area that only gets early or late sun. Not direct sun from say 10am to 2pm. Ensure the mix is kept moist by misting.

In the box or glasshouse the plants will grow straight up with sturdy growth. If there is any danger of slugs or snails getting to the seedlings then spray them and the surrounding area with Liquid Copper and Raingard. Once your seedlings have reached the first true leaf stage and are big enough, they should be carefully pricked out and planted into small pots or spaced apart in punnets or cell packs.

Before doing this spray the seedlings with Vaporgard and leave for an day or two.

Then water the tray well so the mix is very wet. This means there will be less root disturbance when you lift them out. The seedlings can be transplanted into pots or trays using purchased compost.

When the plants are of suitable size to plant out then spray them once again with Vaporgard and leave them for three days before planting out.

It got down to one egg laying chick and they managed to bring the species back with a huge effort and I have taken that and used the symbol of the Black Robin in very abstract works. Its all about life’s challenges for everyone and it’s about being positive and strong,” Sophie says.

Sophie includes the Black Robin in some of her pieces as a symbol of positivity and strength and for the feminist vibe because the single female saved the species.

Some of the latest pieces she is working on at the moment are dawn and dusk and will include the Black Robin.

Wainuiomata artist Sophie Gardiner has a unique talent for creating art with sound using it to produce outstanding works of abstract creation.

“I have this thing called Synesthesia so when I hear certain music I visualise colours. I was doing an exhibition about songs and they were visualised colours and a guy at the exhibition who was a doctor told me I had Synesthesia. Its not blinding and with rock music it is usually blues and greys and it was fascinating,” Sophie says.

Thiem tennis’s next bright light?

It’s a calculated gamble but perhaps Dominic Thiem’s breakthrough US Open victory last Monday could see him as the heirapparent to the men’s tennis throne.

The 27-year-old Austrian won a pulsating five-set final, coming back from two sets to love down in the process against Alexander Zverev.

Now, by no means is he set to

dominate the game like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have as a trio for the past 15 years but perhaps he could be the transitional champion over the next five years.

The big-hitting Austrian is a threat on all surfaces and has made three other finals, once at the Australian Open and twice at the French.

He has powerful ground strokes, a one-handed back hand and excellent defensive instincts.

Thiem often uses heavy, penetrating groundstrokes to construct points and outlast his opponents.

He has a long take-back on both wings, and the top-spin he produces on his groundstrokes allows him to both attack and defend well. Thiem also possesses a strong

serve, capable of reaching 145 mph (233 km/h).

Somebody has to be the next in line and Thiem certainly has the game to be much more than a one-hit wonder.

It shows great mental and physical strength to come back from two sets down in a grand slam final when you have lost the past three. While he did not have to beat

any of the aforementioned trio to get his slam, Father Time is on his side.

If he can stay healthy and consistent, there is no reason why he could not carve out a decent career with four or five grand slams to his name similar to what Naomi Osaka is doing in the twilight of the Serena Williams era in the women’s game.

KTM riders again to the fore The New Zealand motocross scene burst back into life with a “new normal” COVID-19 atmosphere during a rare double-header event at Mercer at the weekend.

The popular annual North Island Motocross Championships and Pukekohe Sand Prix attracted champions of the past and present as riders rejoiced at being able to once again hit the track, all thanks to strict health measures being observed due to the ongoing pandemic.

And it was almost business as normal too for the high-profile CML KTM Race Team.

Auckland-based multi-time national MX2 champion and current MX1 No.3 Hamish Harwood was thrilled to be at the two-day meeting to raise the flag for the distinctive orange team, racing alongside his KTM team-mate, rising young star Cobie Bourke, also from Auckland.

Between them, they won two of the three premier senior grades – Harwood winning the MX1 crown and Bourke taking top spot in the senior 125cc class. Oparau’s James Scott (Kawasaki) won the other glamour division, the MX2 (250cc) class.

The 25-year-old Harwood, from Royal Heights, was lined up against several hard-hitters in the MX1 class, a field that included multi-time national MX1 champion Cody Cooper, from

Mount Maunganui, 2020 national MX2 runner-up Josiah Natzke, from Tauranga, Motueka’s former Grand Prix star Josh Coppins and national senior 125cc champion Brodie Connolly.

With 1-1-2 results in his three MX1 races on Sunday, Harwood (KTM 450SX-F) finished comfortable winner of the class, edging out Natzke (Kawasaki, 3-3-1) and Cooper (Honda, 2-2-3) in the march towards the top of the podium.

“It was a pleasing result, especially considering it was pretty much the first big event of the new season,” said Harwood afterwards.

“I have not raced much on the bike lately because of the pandemic and I’m nowhere near to full fitness.”

Bourke’s performance over the weekend was perhaps even more impressive – he not only won the senior 125cc class with 1-1-2 results, but the just-turned 16-yearold also rode a KTM 250SX two-stroke bike to manage ninth overall in the MX1 class.

“It’s the first time too that I’ve raced two classes at this level for quite a while,” said Bourke.

“It was great to race the MX1 class and learn from the senior riders. There are a few things I still need to work on, but I was pretty happy with the result. I ride with Hamish (Harwood) during the week and I work with him as

“It was our first big event for the season and nobody was really

ready to go at such short notice – so a big thanks to the Pukekohe club for making it happen.”

The next big event for Harwood

and Bourke will be to contest the annual Michael Godfrey Memorial Motocross near Christchurch next weekend.

New coach for Wainuiomata Tennis Gerald Rillstone

For years Lower Hutt’s Brad Newson was a keen Rugby coach and had always played tennis as a summer sport.

This season that all changed for Brad, he made the decision to turn to full time tennis coaching and joined Marc Paulik at the Wainuiomata Tennis Club.

When his is not coaching or playing tennis Brad is studying communications at Massey University and is in his second year.

He says one of the big reasons he decided to turn to coaching is because he was keen to give

something back to the community and the sport he loves.

“I started playing when I was nine and always enjoyed it and when I was coaching Rugby in the winter I was playing tennis in the summer and this past season I played through the winter and decided to make it my main focus,” Brad says.

“I spent five years coaching Rugby and always regretted not getting enough tennis coaching when I was younger so I thought I would give back to the junior community and take on tennis coaching part-time.”

Since he started playing tennis

he has loved the game, the social elements, the competitive nature, and the opportunities it has created for him, he says.

This year he played Premier 3 men’s inter-club for Lower Hutt and in 2017 and 2018 was fortunate enough to travel to Melbourne to tour for a Trans-Tasman Invitational against a local squad from Hume.

“Both years I had the privilege of captaining a victorious team and to get experience competing against overseas players,” Brad says.

He says he loves the competitive nature of tennis as much as he enjoys the social side afterwards.
