Newlands College student Cyrus Dahl has had his story told by TVNZ’s Attitude The 14-year-old burst on the national scene in February after appearing on TVNZ’s Breakfast show to fundraise for an accessible swing.

Eventually $43,000 was raised and the first of many accessible swings was opened in May. Continued on page 2.

Now a 20-minute biographical journey on Cyrus’ journey through the past eight months has highlighted his life with cerebral palsy, his close bond with Mum, Kris and how he handles the challenges of daily life like attending a mainstream school, attending the ‘Wellys’ and his growing knowledge of his Maori culture.

“It was cool to watch my documentary because I saw how far I have come,” Cyrus says.

“I hope people have learnt and don’t judge

me by my looks.

“I loved being on camera because I like being a star and it made me proud to see what I have achieved over the months.

“I love editing my own videos and I’m going to keep doing more.

“I’m going to the 2021 Attitude Awards in December because I’m a finalist in the youth award section.

“It will be super exciting.”

Transmission Gully opening date delayed by Covid-19 Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is working with the Transmission Gully Public Private Partnership contractor, Wellington Gateway Partnership (WGP), and its subcontractor, CPB HEB Joint Venture, to confirm a new opening date for the motorway.

“WGP and CPB HEB have advised Waka Kotahi that the recent Covid-19 lockdown, Alert Level 3 restrictions, and supply chain constraints as a result of the extended lockdown in Auckland have impacted on their ability to meet the contractually agreed

opening date of 27 September 2021,” says Brett Gliddon, Waka Kotahi General Manager Transport Services.

The 27-kilometre Transmission Gully motorway will be a safer and more reliable route for motorists travelling between Wellington and the lower North Island, and will provide the Wellington region with greater resilience in earthquakes and storms.

“Work has resumed on the project under the appropriate health and safety protocols since the move to Alert Level 3, then Alert Level 2, in Wellington.

However these new delays, on top of the risk that already existed around achieving the contractually agreed opening date, mean it is clear that the motorway will not be ready to open on 27 September,” Mr Gliddon says.

“Waka Kotahi, WGP and CPB HEB are working together to understand the full impacts of the lockdown and restrictions on the project, and confirm a new opening date.

“We know that people are keen to see the road open as soon as possible, and everyone is working as fast as they can to get the road

open to the public.”

As well as finishing works, there are other critical requirements which also need to be met by WGP and CPB HEB before the motorway can legally be opened for public use. This includes safety and asset quality assurance work, and compliance with environmental consent conditions.

Waka Kotahi and WGP will provide an update once the additional time required to complete the road for public use has been agreed. No further comment can be provided until then.

A really green gardener

Keith Spry Pool back After an extended period of refurbishment, Keith Spry Pool is finally back in action.

Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre’s main pool, which was also closed for maintenance work, reopened on Saturday.

Gardening has always been an interest for Newlands man Clive Goodger and with a full time job as a chef he has managed to also get on his bike and build a little gardening business in the greenest possible way.

Growing up in the United Kingdom he was either into chefing or gardening and when he left school and trained as a chef he never thought he would have the chance to indulge in gardening, but coming to New Zealand presented new opportunities for him and the ability to do both.

As a youngster he had an allotment and grew veggies and entered competitions with them and won but when he started work as a chef in London he was no longer able to garden.

After visiting New Zealand and later settling in Newlands with his wife and daughter he found there was a bit of spare time in his life and soon discovered he could look after his own veggie gardening and other peoples gardens as-well.

He came up with Wheelie Green Gardening because he doesn’t drive and used to walk to gardening jobs pushing his mower and carrying his weed-eater.

“I don’t drive and I can’t drive so I have this fast bike and I can get from Newlands to Khandallah on the bike in 12 minutes,” Clive says.

“I used to walk 30 k a day pushing my mower and carrying my weed eater and I have got a good wife and she would also drop me to some jobs and drop off a trailer if I need it.”

Keen on gardening since a young age Clive finds time between his job as a chef and his gardening work to maintain his own vegetable garden at home.

has made things easier and is an environmentally better way to work.

Clive says he still enjoys working as a chef and the contrast to working in the kitchen and then

being able to get out in the fresh air is a real bonus.

“You can be in the kitchen all day and then get out in the fresh air and it is like chalk and cheese.”

“I have been doing the gardening for about three years and I have had the bike for about six weeks and it is something that gets a lot of looks and is something quite different,” Clive says.

Interest in coins increases during lockdown

A major international coin and banknote auction is being held in Wellington tomorrow.

Karori’s David Galt is Director of coins for the auctioneers, Mowbray Collectables: “our estimates of over $520,000 on coins, medals and banknotes for this event reflect the heightened interest in collectables in general that recent Lockdowns have delivered. It appears that with time on their hands people have been able to spend more time going through their attic, wondering and researching what Grandad’s old treasures might be worth. There has been great interest in the very first New Zealand decimal note signed by a Reserve Bank Governor, the late Sir Spencer Russell –a $10 with serial number NJR 000 001.

“We go into this auction with an estimate of $15,000 on this unique and very special piece of New Zealand history,” David says of this items from the 1970s.

Viewing for the coin auction at West Plaza Hotel will begin at 10am on Thursday and will also be available on Friday morning ahead of the 12.30pm auction start time. Current Covid-19 social distancing protocols will apply to all attendees.

Author Nicky Hager speaks to Johnsonville Friendship Group Nicky Hager was the special guest speaker at the Johnsonville Friendship Club’s September meeting.

The Friendship Club of Johnsonville’s speaker for September was Nicky Hager, a New Zealand investigative journalist with a passion for research, intelligence networks, environmental issues, and, of course, politics.

Nicky outlined his process of writing. He starts with in-depth researching. Then he organises and indexes all the material so that it is readily accessed, and only then does he begin the writing phase. He aims to write about 1500 words a day, editing and

reworking as he goes.

In talking about journalism, Nicky explained the differences between daily reporting journalism and investigative journalism. He paid tribute to the journalists doing the important job of keeping the public informed of current issues and events.

He pointed out that investigative journalism doesn’t get the attention it deserves. To follow the story properly demands many hours of work on complex issues over a long period. In New Zealand there are few investigative journalists, but many (although a decreasing number) of reporters. “You have

to approach the work like a detective to hold people to account” he says.

For such a quiet mannered and softly spoken person, Nicky has certainly stirred up a lot of controversy over the years. The number of personal attacks on the various internet platforms has also been a problem he has to withstand.

Currently Nicky is working on a few new projects. One that he is particularly passionate about is promoting the need to bring out to New Zealand the Afghan people who worked with the NZ Defence Force.

Wellington City Council has always been a proud supporter of the Great Kerernj Count, and in its last year, they want to see those sightings soaring.

The count is the eighth and final year of this citizen science project, so everyone’s contributions will help complete the data on where kereUnj are across Wellington – and the rest of New Zealand.

Last year, 21,509 kerernj were counted by over 10,000 participants nationwide – the greatest number to date, and a fifty percent increase in sightings from 2019, which shows a significant increase in community engagement and that predator control, planting and education is making a huge difference, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“The Great KereUnj Count is an important and popular citizen science project gathering information around kereUnj distribution and numbers. Regionally Wellington recorded over 5,600 kerernj, over a quarter of the national total, with 30 percent of our regional sightings recorded in Wellington City.

“There’s no doubt kerernj are coming back in Wellington. I recall as a new councillor being told we had a couple of pairs of kereUnj in Wellington, and now I often see several times that number just walking round the block!

“It’s all part of our incredible environmental restoration journey, the result of nearly thirty years of land protection, natural and assisted revegetation and increasingly intensive predator control. Wellington City is now

undoubtedly a biodiversity hot spot and our restoration journey continues.

“Pest control has played a major role in boosting kereUnj numbers. KereUnj are also hungry birds, and they love native plants and trees like kǀZhai, tawa, tƯ NǀXka (cabbage tree) and nikau. They’re also experts in the dispersal of several native tree species – so let’s all get out there counting, trapping, and planting this month,” says Mayor Foster.

Tony Stoddard of Kerernj Discovery, who coordinates the count, says community participation over the last seven years has been a privilege to be part of. A passionate advocate for kerernj, he encourages everyone to take part in the final count down.

“Over the last seven years there has been a total of 52,034 observations, and 119,910 kerernj counted. For this final count, it’s important that as many people as possible join in. It’s super easy, good for you, and good for kerernj.”

Council’s Urban Ecology Manager, Daniela Biaggio, adds: “The Great KereUnj Count is a brilliant example of how we can make conservation easy and meaningful in Wellington, by connecting a simple action of each count into a larger project that helps us understand a species and inform management decisions.”

Everyone can participate in the final count wherever they are, either through iNaturalist or through the Great Kerernj Count website.

The count runs from September 17 to 26.

Metlink offers free Recruiting? YIP! travel to vaccination events and centres Metlink will be offering free travel on buses and trains to anyone getting their COVID-19 vaccination as part of a coordinated effort to boost attendance at vaccination centres and events across the region.

The free travel be available for anyone heading for a vaccination says Scott Gallacher, General Manager of Metlink.

“We’ve been working with Waka Kotahi and the District Health Boards to make getting a COVID-19 vaccination as easy as possible. From Monday 20 September, passengers can simply hop on board any of our Metlink bus and train services as they head for a vaccination. Metlink is proud to be able to offer this important service to our region’s communities at this time,” says Scott Gallacher.

The free return trip on Metlink bus and train services will be available to all passengers travelling on the day of their vaccination appointment who can show their booking confirmation and date either on paper or their devices. Passengers unable to use buses or trains are encouraged to contact Metlink directly on 0800 801 700 to arrange community transport to and from their vaccination centre.

Metlink advises passengers to follow all Government advice at all alert levels when waiting for and on board all of its services.

The Kapiti Women’s Triathlon, to be held on Sunday 27th February 2022, is the longestrunning women’s-only event in NZ. This iconic contest began in 1983 with the aim of encouraging women and girls to get out and have a go, focusing on fun, fitness and health.

It remains an amazing ‘grass roots’ event for women, run by women with a low key fun and friendly approach where any woman can find a challenge to suit them.

One of the unique aspects of this event is the great Group training options available to everyone. From openwater swim practices to cycle and run technique sessions and regular Sunday morning group swim sessions at Coastlands Aquatic Centre. Details can be found on the ‘Training’ page of kwt.org.nz website.

Women can choose to take part in the full triathlon, a duathlon, a team event, a fun run or the sprint distance triathlon for those who wish to push themselves.

The events are run in age group waves of 50 or less to avoid congestion. The first wave starts at 8.30 am with the Sprint Distance Triathlon (750 m/18 km/5 km) and duathlon (500 m/18 m /5 km). Further waves start at 9am, participants are advised of their wave at registration.

Wellington man running 24 hours to raise respiratory disease awareness

Marketing Professor and ultra-marathon runner Nick Ashill is taking on an epic challenge to support the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation’s Breathe Better September campaign, running for 24 straight hours.

Marketing Professor and ultra-marathon runner Nick Ashill is taking on an epic challenge to support the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation’s Breathe Better September campaign.

He will be hitting the streets of Wellington and running non-stop for 24 hours from 9am tomorrow to 9am on Saturday.

“I’ve signed up to become a Better Breathing Hero because I want to make a difference to the 700,000 Kiwis with respiratory disease,” says Nick. “I have a personal connection to respiratory disease, having lost my mum to pulmonary fibrosis in 2017. I also LOVE running, and am looking forward to the physical challenge.”

Nick is inviting his fellow Wellingtonians to join him at any point of the day or night. He has friends and colleagues lined up to accompany him at different times on foot, on scooter and by bike. Nick has drafted in colleagues from the University of Victoria to help keep him well nourished. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people offering to come and help with my food stops, which will be at midday, 4pm, 8pm, midnight and 4am. I’m so grateful for this support as staying well fed and hydrat-

ed throughout is absolutely vital.”

Nick will be running a 6km loop, starting at his workplace, the Business School at the Pipitea Campus of the University of Victoria.

The route will take him past the railway station, along the harbour to Te Papa, along Cambridge Terrace, and back up via Tory Street and Manners Street.

“The long-range forecast is showing rain, and obviously the Wellington weather is unpredictable,” says Nick. “I just hope it’s not too windy!”

Nick will be aiming for an average pace of around 8 or 9km an hour, so that he doesn’t get too tired. “If I can stay fairly slow that’s good,” he says, “The last ten hours will be tricky, with all the lactic acid buildup in my legs. I’m hopeful that as many people as possible can join me to keep the momentum going.”

GARDENING THIS WEEK Curly leaf stone fruit: By Wally Richards About this time each year our stone fruit trees, nectarine and peach start to flower and product the new seasons foliage.

Dependent on the weather conditions the foliage is likely to catch the disease we call curly leaf.

Generally speaking the disease does not kill the tree but in severe cases I have heard this can happen.

Some, or all of the leaves will get these reddish blisters on them which look a bit unsightly for a while.

The problem is that these leaves are not catching and converting the sunlight to carbohydrates (energy) and the fruit that has set will not have sufficient energy to continue growing and some (or all) of the season’s crop will be affected or lost completely.

The blister leaves later fall off and are replaced with new leaves which is too late for the crop.

Sometimes there is a little late infection to the second set of leaves but that is usually minor.

When the leaves start to emerge there is about a 6-8 week danger period and then it is usually over for the season.

In the past copper sprays have been recommended to be applied with Raingard (the disease attacks when it rains as dormant spores are splashed up onto the leaves).

The idea is to cover the leaves with a film of copper to prevent the disease from establishing.

As the leaves are growing you need to repeat the Wallys Liquid Copper Spray with Raingard every 7 to 10 days to protect the new growth.

That means a weekly spray for

6-8 weeks.

Even then you may still have some leaf lost.

I have also in the past suggested adding potassium permanganate at a quarter a teaspoon per litre of spray with the Wallys Liquid Copper and Raingard.

A number of years ago I had suggested that sprinkling Wallys Ocean Solids under the trees from trunk to beyond the drip line.

I have had some positive feedback from a couple of gardeners that it had helped. I presume the sodium chloride (salt) killed the spores on the soil.

The reason for the salt was to increase the minerals available to the tree helping it withstand the disease as was described in Sea90, a book on using sea water or raw sea salt for its minerals which we duplicated with Wallys Ocean Solids.

Another product we had imported years ago which I think we called Wallys DE at the time suggested that the foliage could be sprayed with that to combat the disease.

Once again I had some favourable reports from gardeners that used it.

We have imported the same product again and called it Wallys Cell Strengthening Spray with Silicon Super Spreader added in a 500mil bottle.

The same sprays are used for combating the psyllids on potatoes, tomatoes, tamarillos etc plus preventing the rust on garlic.

This season on my nectarine tree I am going to use this spray weekly as the leaves are growing.

spraying should be only done last thing in the day before dusk so that pollination will have been completed for the day.

There is no need to add Raingard to this spray as the Super Spreader will drive the silicon into the foliage strengthening it and making it more resilient to the disease.

This same spray can be used to advantage on tomatoes and garlic plus any preferred plants.

A few years ago I had a conversation with an elderly gardener and the topic of curly leaf on stone fruit came up.

She told me that she never had any problems on her stone fruit which she had grown all her trees from stones!

She also said that one time at a garden centre she saw dwarf nectarine and peach trees which she purchased being a novelty.

These were planted with her sown from seed trees but the dwarfs every year had bad curly leaf problems.

Her stone grown ones were never affected even though the dwarfs had ample disease spores.

My understanding is that all purchased trees including the

dwarf are grafted which make them inherently weaker than self sown of stone grown.

I had a self sown one at one place I lived and in the second year I had a small crop so they do not take long to produce.

Growing from stones placed where you want the tree to mature is a very inexpensive way of obtaining a few fruit trees.

Just pick a nice fruit you like and plant the stone.

The resulting fruit may vary from the fruit you picked as it will not be true to that variety but likely very similar.

Draft bike network plan considered Pnjroro Ɩmua, the Planning and Environment Committee, will today consider a draft Bike Network Plan proposing a connected, 147km network of safer bike routes to be built across the city within 10 years, giving effect to the cycleways investment committed to in the 2021-2031 Long-Term Plan.

The committee will also decide whether to give the green light to making safer connections as quickly as possible between Newtown and the city via Adelaide Road and Kent and Cambridge Terraces, and from the Botanic Garden ki PaeNƗNƗ to the central city via Bowen Street. These interim changes would be in advance of permanent upgrades delivered through the Let’s Get Wellington Moving programme.

Mayor Andy Foster says the plan seeks to increase options for people to do more trips around Wellington by bus, bike, or scooter.

Give Jordie the kicking duties Time to give Jordie Barrett the goal kicking duties fulltime.

He is the best goal kicker out of the three options, Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo’unga.

Is he perfect? Not even close.

The All Blacks have such a rich history of quality goal kickers that not one of the trio will ever go down as one of the greats off the

kicking tee but the time has come to commit to one player through to the next Rugby World Cup. In giving Jordie the kicking duties, I’m also suggesting he become the No 1 fullback.

The Beauden at 15 and Richie at 10 experiment must be done away with and the headless-chicken antics of Damian McKenzie must

also be put on the back burner.

Jordie is an attacking threat from the back, good under the high ball (when he doesn’t kick his leg out) and can read the game well.

Beauden has looked well off the pace since returning from Japan.

Yes, he is apparently carrying a hamstring injury but Richie

is the best 10 in the country and Beauden should be used, much like McKenzie, off the bench against tiring defensive lines and lethargic forwards.

By giving Jordie the kicking duties the All Blacks will have some continuity in a key area heading into the next Rugby World Cup in 2023.

In a try-happy era, accurate goal kicking seems to have slid down the priority list but in a tight World Cup knockout game, it can be the difference between success and failure as tries often dry up.

Jordie may not be everyone’s cup of tea but committing to him early could provide big dividends, in crucial games down the road.

Goals galore as football returns

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for North Wellington FC’s top teams over the weekend.

After a five week Covid induced hiatus and with most grades already completed for the season, the final full rounds of the Men’s Premier and Central Region Football Leagues played out.

In the Men’s Premier League the North Wellington side ground out a plucky 1-0 win thanks to a second half goal by Lee Rufer. Those with a nervous disposition need not have attended the match as the game ebbed and flowed and victory was never assured until the final whistle.

But what does it all mean in the final analysis? With catch up matches still to be played for some teams, the answer is unclear. Western Suburbs, will take the plunge into the Capital One local league and North Wellington may join them or face a playoff match, depending on the results of games still to play and final results from the Central League. The formula is trickier than a managed isolation algorithm and Norths will need to bide their time and keep training into October before they know where they are heading in 2022.

It’s no clearer either who will take the Central League spot vacated by Wainuiomata. Havelock North Wanderers will enter a home and away play off match against either Island bay United or Wellington United.

Island Bay have finished their season and sit on 33 points while Wellington United are on 32 points but have a game in hand.

The Central League round 18 matches did nothing to change the top or bottom of the tables.

Wellington Olympic 47, Miramar Rangers 42, Lower Hutt City 41 and Western Suburbs on 31 points round off the top four sides to move ahead to the National League in October, albeit Lower Hutt will morph into the Wellington Phoenix Reserves. They will be joined by Auckland City, Auckland United, Eastern Suburbs and Birkenhead United after the Northern League was ended without completion due to Covid restrictions.

The National League will completed with the addition of Cashmere Technical and one other from the South Island when the Southern League winds up after two more rounds.

The rest of the Central League table reads Wairarapa United 24, Waterside Karori 22, Napier City Rovers 17, North Wellington 16, Petone 12 and Wainuiomata 1. North Wellington will play a catch up game at home against Wainuiomata next weekend and then the season will be well and truly done and dusted.

Norths will want to equip themselves better in their final game after losing a 10 goal arm wrestle against Petone with Petone coming out the victors 6-4 at Alex Moore Park on Saturday.

Olympic Harriers find success Johnsonville held their Olympic Harrier Road Championships in conjunction with the Wellington Centre Road Championships in Wainuiomata over the weekend.

Olympic Harriers won six gold medals, three silvers and three bronze medals across the age-groups.

Talented teen Will Anthony stepped-up to the senior men’s race and scorched the 10km event in a time of 30 minutes 51 seconds.

Ava Sutherland won the girls under-16 race.

Desmond Reddy triumphed in the boys under-14 event.

Ovin Angammana secured the boys under-10 race.

Brooke Martin won the girls under-10 race.

Ingrid Cree was second in the women’s 35 event.

Lucy Hannah was second in the girls under-14 contest.

Shriya Daivi was second in the girls under-12 event.

Thomas White was third in the mens under-18 level.

Eight teams competed for the Peter Keen Trophy over the weekend at the Johnsonville Bowling Club on a cool but beautifully sunny Saturday.

After three rounds of 10 ends, the winners were Kay Martin’s team of Keith Alexander, Joss Mouat and Terry Dean.

Runners up were Dick Williams, Pearl Archer, Bill Mouat and Craig Hepetema.
