A new challenge for Natalie Continued from page 1 Coming to Arakura School was Natalie’s first experience in teaching fresh from study and right from the beginning it was all go with a class of 35 students all with diverse personalities she says.

“I started my teaching career here in 2007 and then after two and a half years I was interim deputy principal and I have been in management since then so I have been teaching and managing for 11 years,” Natalie says.

“I’ve mostly taught year five and six and as a staff we have created

traditions over the years and it has been really nice to have been a part of creating them,” she says.

Natalie has been acting principal since May this year and says it was a huge learning curve. “ The thing that made it easy was that I knew the school and knew the staff and the staff were really supportive and I am grateful that I had them they were so understanding,” she says.

“What I enjoy the most is supporting the teachers and growing them into confident leaders in their class so they can

have an impact on the students learning.”

She says in the 13 years a lot of students have come under her guidance and with 30 students over a year level over 13 years that is around 300 plus students she has helped.

She says taking on the principal role wasn’t something she thought suited her personality but having had a taste of the role it is something she would like to pursue in the future.

“Seeing that I have been able to do it and with the support of

the staff and them believing in me I now know I can do it and I will one day,” Natalie says.

“I don’t think I will have a school that I am so connected to as Arakura because I have been here so long and the reason a lot of us teachers have stayed is the support we have been given here and the opportunity to grow and we are like a whanau and are deeply connected and are supportive of each other and the school really does have a heart and soul and is a lovely place to be.”

Recognising Youth Achievements St John has been busy throughout the community by providing health shuttles, youth programmes, hospital friends, phone friends, pet outreach therapy and more.

Recognising the efforts of youth in the wider Hutt Valley, Ginny Andersen, MP attended the St John Youth year end joint prize giving for the Wainuiomata and Upper Hutt Youth Divisions.

2020 has been a challenging year for volunteer organisations, youth involvement due to COVID-19 restrictions particularly.

St John Youth continued to deliver opportunities through an amended online programme with the attending youth receiving acknowledgments of their

hard work during the year.

The achieved badges included Communications, First Aid and Leadership.

The prestigious Grand Prior Award was presented to one Youth Leader from Upper Hutt.

The Grand Prior Award is the ultimate Award for St John Cadets to obtain. The Award is revised every year and is one of the best educational youth programmes in New Zealand.

Learning objectives are built on the New Zealand Education Curriculum to ensure that cadets are given an edge outside of school and that we don’t overlap what is done in the classroom.

The main curriculum of the cadet programme is the Grand Prior’s Award where cadets set

goals and achieve in a variety of areas. There are 27 subjects available, 6 of them are compulsory.

The programme provides many topics for cadets to choose from. Although the award is a real challenge, it’s super rewarding and is something all our young people aspire to obtain.

Presentation of the award is very special. As the highest award, other than for bravery, St John can bestow on its Cadets, our young people have the option to travel to Government House and participate in a ceremony where the Grand Prior badge and parchment is presented by the Prior of St John in New Zealand, The Governor General.

As we splash into the swimming season and experience heavy rainfall, Greater Wellington is urging the community to check if it’s safe to swim on Land Air Water Aotearoa’s (LAWA) website under the ‘Can I swim here’ section.

Greater Wellington senior environmental advisor Dr Sheryl Miller says, “It’s really important water users check online if it’s safe to swim, as this has the most reliable and up to date information, rather than referring to the long term grades of a site.

“To keep safe, we recommend people avoid swimming for 48 hours after heavy rainfall, this gives sufficient time for contaminants to be flushed away,” says Dr Miller.

A ‘poor’ long term grade for a site does not necessarily mean the community shouldn’t swim there, but it does indicate there is a higher risk of illness to swimmers than a site with a better grade.

Plan change E 43 irks District Plan - City of Lower Hutt

A council plan change that will see the more intense housing close to the village shops has shocked long time Wainuiomata resident Jane Law. She and her family have lived in their house on Hyde Street Wainuiomata for around 25 years and love it there and would never dream of moving even with the looming threat of a ten plus metre high eight block housing development being built right over her back fence.

She finds the thought of the buildings looming over her property upsetting and even though the council posted no-

tices of plan change 43 that will allow it to happen in the Newspaper and on Facebook the fi rst she heard was when the developer contacted her and offered to buy her property to include it in the development.

“He offered me between $900,000 and a million dollars just to knock our house over,” Jane says.

“It is not just a house to us it is also a lifestyle,” Jane says.

Jane is surprised the council didn’t at least letter drop to the properties affected as not everyone is on Facebook or following the council website.

She also says she understands the need for more affordable

housing but suggests there have been plenty of other opportunity’s to have this style of house built elsewhere in the valley.

Plan change 43 allows for high density housing blocks and the property that borders her section will have a mixture of ten one and two bedroom two storey dwellings if it is approved by the Hutt City Council.

The latest information on the properties to be built are there are ten to choose from, ranging from a one bedroom option to various two bedroom designs with pricing starting from $535,000 for the one bedroom, from $635,000 for two bedrooms with an estimated

completion date of August 2021.

Off street parking isn’t required because the property is close to a bus stop and the shops and Jane points out that with just this one development that could mean a significant number of cars parked on the street and traveling over the all ready busy main road out of the town.

“If there are two adults there will be two cars,” she says.

Woodland Mews is also included in the area allowing development which will mean as those properties come on the market there will more than likely be high density housing there also.

It has been a year when I have learned a lot about myself.

It has been a totally new experience this year and not one I want to see agian.

The year has been the biggest challenge for me so a year of massive challenges is what it has been.

I have had it better than some but the whole lockdown thing I will never forget.

It has been a year with the most ups and downs I have ever had.

It has been a tremendous year in the face of a pandemic and I look forward to a much better year in 2021.

Mental health support for Pacific communities Growing awareness of mental illness within Pacific communities will see ministers at dozens of Pacific churches in Wellington trained to offer support.

Staff from the national Pacific health education organisation, Le Va, began training ministers and other senior figures to understand signs of mental illness in their Hutt Valley congregations as part of the Ta’iala Mo le Ola Manuia Mental Health Project in 2019.

The success of the project in the Hutt Valley will see it rolled-out to more than 30 churches associated with the Fellowship of Samoan Ministers Wellington Region in 2021.

By Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata’s Pioneer Church played host to the annual Christmas Carols in the Church concert and this year their was a mixed and varied lineup.

One of the organisers of the event Joyce Lockyer says each year they try to do something different and this year there was a mix of entertainers from

members of the Wainuiomata Country and Western Club to local Community Board chair Gabriel Tupou who sang an outstanding version of Ave Maria.

It proved to be as popular as ever with extra setting provided outside.

for Pacific Peoples and Associate Minister of Health (Pacific Peoples) Hon Aupito William Sio in Porirua on December 3.

Fellowship chairman and reverend elder Malaki Muaiava said the churches had created communities like villages for Pacific Peoples living in New Zealand.

Respecting family was often of the utmost importance, but traditional values sometimes made it hard for young people to talk to their parents about sensitive issues.

“But here in the churches we have a chance to talk to parents about this.

“They should be the core of this so we need to help them understand what’s going on.”

The project began as a partnership between the Hutt Valley District Health Board Pacific

Health Directorate and the Samoan Ministers Fellowship Hutt Valley (Mafutaga).

Le Va staff use a combination of cultural, pastoral, spiritual and clinical knowledge to equip church leaders with the skills to be the first responders to their congregations in regard to mental health issues and suicide prevention. They can then direct people to the appropriate support service.

The survey Te Rau Hinengaro (2006), found 47 per cent of Pacific people had experienced a mental disorder at some stage during their lifetime compared with 39.5 per cent of the overall New Zealand population.

However, Pacific Peoples were less likely to make a mental health visit to a health service as only 7.8 per cent of Pacific had a mental health visit.

Wainuiomata Intermediate celebrates By: Gerald Rillstone A frantically busy final week of term four at Wainuiomata Intermediate involved a cultural evening, the school formal and senior prize giving.

Principal Craig Sharp says there was no script for the year and a lot of the normal opportunities were taken away due to the Covid lock-down.

But he says they got more opportunities than they normally would have and 2020 has been the best learning year for students with them facing unknown challenges and in return adapting and changing to make the most of the

situation.

“2020 forced us out of our comfort zones and into new ways of being and that is what learning is and we have all grown exponentially and we should all acknowledge how resilient and how resourceful we all are,” Craig says.

He also paid tribute to the passing of team leader and teacher Pio Semu Matiahi Kauone who was a force in everything he did.

“In time we will honour our brothers memory appropriately with an award our naming our Pasifika group or some other way of recognising his legacy,” Craig says.

Rhobe-Jaexoynn Rahiri was presented with Te Reo Maori Trophy for progress and achievement.

At this time of the year chocolate.  When you have had a bad day, what do you do to feel better?

I try and exercise.  What’s one thing on your bucket list?

To travel overseas with my kids and see it through it the eyes of a child.  Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life?

It would be the people I work with.  What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

Vanuatu it was absolutley beautiful and I would love to go back there it was a different pace of life and that is something we all need.

 What was the last photo you took?

It was one of me and another teacher.  What thing do you really wish you could buy right now?

I am a bit of a clean freak so a Dyson Stick vacuum cleaner.  What is the best or worst purchase you’ve ever made?

Probably a food processor because I have used it once and it is a pain to clean.  Favourite programme currently watching?

The Crown.  If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live?

I wouldn’t I just want to be here.

The art of growing seedlings: By Wally Richards To obtain new plants we either buy seeds and germinate them ourselves or we buy seedlings/plants and grow them on from there.

Buying seedlings of vegetables and flower plants for our gardens is a quick way to get plants established and can save about a month of time compared to germinating seeds yourself.

There are many pitfalls in buying seedlings of vegetables and in some case flowering plants.

Summer flowering plants which are tender to cold, wet frosty conditions should only be planted when the weather is settled going into summer.

You would not plant summer annuals in autumn unless you climate is suitable with mild winters.

Instead you would in January to March period seek out winter flowering plants and get them into your flower beds as soon as possible so they are well established as winter comes.

Daylight hours is the prime factor for growth then food, moisture and temperature the secondary factors.

The same applies to winter vegetables they must be planted between January and March to be successful and ready for harvesting in winter.

Plant them later and already the shortening day light hours means little growth and they will sit and sulk in winter to get a growth burst in the spring and go to seed.

Correctly timed winter crops means that the plants will be mature as winter strikes and the cold conditions acts as a giant fridge holding them nicely till you are ready to harvest them.

Leeks for those that love them should be planted now as seeds in a very rich nursery bed in the garden.

They will germinate and grow to about pencil thin over the next couple of months and be ready to lift about February to plant out in very rich soil.

They are hungry feeders and you can keep throwing liquid manures at them as a side dressing so you will obtain big leek plants in the middle of winter.

Celery is another gross feeder and if you want those big juicy stalks you need to feed well and keep well-watered.

All vegetables that are grown from seed, where they are going to mature, will be superior plants to those that are transplanted.

Some plants of root crops such as carrots, parsnips, salsify and radish should always

Advice for growing or buying seedlings. be grown directly from seed; where they are going to mature.

Other vegetables that have large seeds which are easy to handle should also be direct sown; peas, beans, pumpkins etc.

When we direct sow ourselves we thin the plantings to give the best plants room to develop.

This is best done by snipping the inferior plants off at ground level.

Now when you buy vegetable seedlings it is important that you do not buy those plants that are already large because those plants have filled their growing space and are becoming root bound and can dry out quickly which puts them into stress.

Stressed plants are afraid for their lives and will want to flower and go to seed as quickly as possible as that is their end game anyway.

If you are buying flowering plants or vegetable plants that flower and fruit such as tomatoes then the bigger the better as you want them to flower as soon as possible.

If you are not aware of this fact you may buy these big seedlings, take them home, plant them out to find within a few weeks they have bolted and gone to seed. A waste of time and money.

Look only for the nice small young seedlings, fresh out of the growing

nursery and still likely hardened off to a degree.

When I buy cells or punnets I look for those ones that not only have all the seedlings that they are supposed to have (no losses which indicates already they have not been properly looked after) and ones that are over-seeded having more than the normal 6 plants or so.

If when you get the trays home and before you sit them on their meat trays to grow on a bit plunge the packs into a bucket of water and watch them bubble.

This ensures that all the mix they are in is wet and ready to accept later waterings.

Place them in the meat trays.

Now when you are ready to transplant them once again plunge them into a bucket of water.

This will allow them to slide out of the cell pack or in the case of punnets make it easier and less root disturbance when you separate the seedlings.\ If you have a cell with two or three vegetable seedling in then when soaking wet you are able to separate them with less root disturbance and have more to plant out.

The Basin of brilliance and horror That was not your Dad’s West Indies.

For two days, I sat in the RA Vance stand at Wellington’s Basin Reserve recently struggling to work out whether the Black Caps team was crushing the West Indies or whether the men from the Caribbean had decided they wanted to be somewhere warmer.

Make no mistake, this is a golden period of New Zealand test cricket that even the most casual Kiwi fan should try to catch a glimpse of before

it finishes. However, the West Indies were hopeless at times.

In both tests, their captain Jason Holder won the toss on green, seamerfriendly pitches and elected to bowl.

Both times, his bowlers were not full enough, nor accurate enough and the fielding was worse than a social grade encounter with plastic bats on a Monday night.

Henry Nicholls cashed-in though.

His highest test score, despite being dropped four times throughout, at least keeps Devon Conway waiting

for his baggy black cap for a wee while longer you would think.

The batsmen weren’t much better.

Too loose, lacking footwork and patience, they were ruthlessly exposed by the best quartet of fast bowlers New Zealand has had at any one time.

Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and young-gun Kyle Jamieson proved how bowling in tandem can be so effective.

As someone who was too young to see it, I have heard stories of the great 1980s West Indian teams which

revolutionised test cricket in that era.

Some 35 to 40 years later, it looks like much of that historical equity is now gone.

New Zealand deserves a lot of credit.

Even without skipper Kane Williamson for the second test, they barely skipped a beat and undoubtedly will be looking forward to bigger and better challenges as the season progresses.

A curious thing to come out of the series was Jamieson’s impressive

technique with the bat.

He could be a No 7 for New Zealand and allow a genuine spinner to bat lower down the order.

The two questions to ponder are, firstly who is that spinner? Because I don’t know and 2 as the heir apparent to the new ball once Boult and Southee retire, is Jamieson best served to split his time between bat and ball in the hopes of becoming a test all rounder or is he best served to become a genuine strike bowler.

Only time will tell.

Honda Summercross set to explode

By Andy McGechan It’s summer time again and time too for the start of the new motocross season to get twisted full throttle, so that can only mean one thing, it’s also time for the big annual Whakatane Summercross.

Hosted each year by the Bay of Plenty Motorcycle Club at its popular Awakaponga circuit, near Matata, the Honda-sponsored Summercross event has again attracted a “Who’s Who” of Kiwi motocross talent.

Because the Christmas Day and Boxing Day holidays occur as they do this season (on Friday and Saturday), the seniors, women and veterans will race on Sunday, December 27 and the minis, juniors and junior women follow the next day, on Monday, December 28.

The event again this year acts as a springboard for riders heading into the busy part of the season, culminating with the four-round New Zealand Motocross Championships in January, February and March.

It will be hard to look much

further than Mount Maunganui’s multi-time national MX1 champion Cody Cooper, always a crowd favourite at this popular post-Christmas blow-out.

He was been the main trophy winner at Summercross on more occasions than any other competitor, winning there five times – in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 too – so, if he wins again this time around, it will be the former Opotiki man’s sixth outright Summercross win in total.

Cooper was a late withdrawal from racing at Summercross last year. He decided the injury he had sustained during training just two days earlier was “too uncomfortable” for him to continue beyond the first lap of his warm-up at Summercross on the Sunday morning.

He’s happy to be back to full fitness and ready to reclaim the silverware, although standing in Cooper’s way will be last year’s Summercross champion, Hamilton rider Kayne Lamont, along with dozens of equally-talented stars of the sport, men such as

Mount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper (Honda CRF450), the favourite to win at Summercross this season.

Foster has dream day with bat and ball

Wainuiomata cricketer Craig Foster had a day all club players dream about on Saturday.

The 45-year-old smashed an unbeaten 153 with the bat then took seven for 10 with his leg spinners, against the Taita Premier Reserves in their third division match at Fraser Park.

Craig says it was definitely his best day on the field in more than

30 summers playing the game.

“I played my first senior game for Wainuiomata when I was 14 and now it’s just an enjoyment thing for me, I want to give back to the club.”

A builder by trade, Craig says the pitch was quite bowler-friendly for much of the day.

“I got my hundred in the 35th over and then tried to really have a go from there but I wouldn’t say I ever felt comfortable despite the score.”

His time at the bowling crease

proved just as fruitful.

“I got the ball in the 15th over and everything just worked out.

“Once word got out about what happened, I’ve heard from mates and a couple of ex-coaches all wishing me well, so it’s been good.”

Wainuiomata finished on 295 for three with Taita then being bowled out for 138 in reply.

“It was certainly a heck of a day,” Foster says.
