Winning the award was “awesome. It was absolutely amazing,” Contemporary Korowai Designs owner Brenda James told the “Wainuiomata News”.

Athough the business was a finalist in the award, Brenda says she had not expected to win it.

“As much as I was really hoping, I was up against some really amazing small businesses,” she says.

Winning the award “was one of the proudest moments of my life – (the proudest moments were having my two daughters).”

A small whānau-based business, Contemporary Korowai Designs designs and creates stunning Korowai/Kākahu (Māori cloaks).

Brenda was never intending to set up a business when she began

making korowai.

“I call it my accidental business,” she says.

“I was making one or two korowai a week.

“The more I made the more people wanted.

“My daughters said ‘you should create a website’.

“We did that and since then it has just grown from strength to strength.

“I never had any intention to start a business but I’m glad I have.”

Contemporary Korowai Designs opened in 2018 and has just turned five years old.

When it began Brenda was helped by her two daughters, Brooke James-Davis and Jade James-Paki.

They have since left to pursue their careers and Brenda has been joined by her two staff

members Rebekah Jensen and Lisa Winter.

Currently Contemporary Korowai Designs is around half way through a major project.

It has been commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to make 60 korowai to be worn at New Zealand’s embassies around the world.

Organised by the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce the Wellington Regional Business Awards are now in the 15th year.

“This year we had 40% more entries than ever before, which mean our judges really had a task on their hands to select the finalists,” says Patrick McKibbin, CEO of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce.

“From over 45 finalists we had some very special winners.”

The gala evening where the winners were announced was “an amazing evening of recognising the huge contribution businesses make to our region,” Patrick says.

“The business community here in our region, and the Hutt Valley particularly, is brilliant.

“Every day they are making the most fantastic products, innovating, providing the best support services, running the best cafés and hospitality venues, creating jobs, exporting products all over the world, and driving our local economy.

“So it was real honour to be involved in this evening which recognises some of our most amazing businesses,” Patrick says.

With the holiday and Christmas season approaching now is a good time to put in place measures that can help prevent you being a victim of crime, says Sergeant Patrick Tangipo, the officer in charge of the Wainuiomata Police.

“By taking steps for the safekeeping of your property it increases your chances of not having anything taken,” he says.

When leaving your home, especially for longer periods such as when you are going on holiday, make sure the house is locked and secured.

It is also a good idea to arrange with your neighbour to keep an eye on your property.

“It can be as simple as getting a neighbour to park a car on your driveway when you are away.

“It’s also a good way to get to know your neighbours and

it enables people to look after each other.”

Recording the serial numbers of items of value can be very beneficial too.

When Police locate stolen items that will help the Police identify if your missed valuables are among the items they have recovered.

There are also pens available that people can use to write their name on high value items.

Another measure that sig-

nificantly reduces theft is when people do not leave valuable items in a car.

Making sure the car is locked is also important.

Fitting your vehicle with an alarm will also significantly reduce the chance of either the vehicle or items in it being taken.

These are some of the more important steps people can take from what is a long list of security measures.

Young golfer of the year

Teisa-mania Vaka is one of two winners of the 2023 Wellington Eagles Young Golfer of the Year award. Tesia, who lives in Wainuiomata, plays for the Shandon Golf Club, and was presented the award on 17 November.

This is the second major award she has received recently. She was also named College Sport Wellington’s Golf Sportswoman of the Year in April.

The Wellington Eagles Young Golfer of the Year award is open to players aged under 17 who are New Zealand residents.

This year there were two joint winners, Tesia and Riley Moy from the Ōaki Golf Club.

Past winners have included such famous players as Michael Campbell and Daniel Hillier.

Teisa has been part of Shandon's Women's premier team for two years now, as well as their Watt Cup junior team.

Selected in Wellington’s 10 player mixed junior quad team at number 3, Teisa had three wins over juniors from Taranaki, Manawatu/Wanganui and Hawkes Bay as Wellington won the event.

She was selected in the Women's Senior team in December 2022 as a reserve and has earned selection in the same team which played against Auckland, Taranaki, Manawatu/Wanganui, Hawke’s Bay and Canterbury this year, playing in the number 1, number 2 and number 3 positions across these fixtures.

Teisa was second in the Wellington Under 19 Championships, and placed in the top 10 at the New Zealand Under 19 Championships.

She was third at the Wellington 72 hole Stroke Play Championships and runner up in the Wellington Match Play Championships.

Selected in the National Interprovincial Girls team in October she capped off a great year when she was selected again in the Women's national Interprovincial team, which will compete at Paraparaumu and Waikanae in early December.

Teisa currently leads the Wellington Order of Merit by a significant margin.

A Givealittle page has been set up for the family that has lost everything when their Coast Road home was completely destroyed by fire on 5 November.

The fire “all just happened so quickly and the house was in flames within a couple of minutes,” the Givealittle page says.

“This person goes out of his way helping people, including us.” He is “a kind and caring person who now only has the clothes he was wearing.

The “Wainuiomata News” apologises to the property owner for taking a photo without their permission following the fire.

The paper was not able to find out the name of the family whose house burnt down and when it visited the site nobody was there.

Police shooting in Wainuiomata

Wainuiomata resident Marcia Skinnon (Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Tuwharetoa) has been appointed Kaiwhakahaere Manager of Volunteer Hutt.

Marcia was 18 years old when her whānau moved to Wainuiomata and aside from work secondments she has lived in the valley ever since.

She now has four adult children and 10 mokopuna.

Marcia’s career started in the private sector, progressing in sales and management.

In 2005 she took her first role in the not for profit sector where she has mostly continued to work.

Marcia says she has had the privilege to walk in local and central government circles, iwi and hapu, business communities, funding committee’s advocating to bridge the gaps many whānau face.

Last week’s Police shooting of a Tane Wipa in Wainuiomata “has been a difficult and distressing time for our community,” Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry told the “Wainuiomata News”.

“I understand that people are anxious following last week’s incident,” the Mayor said.

“I have been briefed by Police, and it’s important we give them and the IPCA the space to investigate.

“My thoughts are with the friends and whānau of those impacted by this tragic event,” the Mayor said.

After Mr Wipa held his partner hostage for over an hour, holding a weapon to her neck, Police shot him dead on 16 November.

Police were called to a Coast Road property at around 11:45am to a suspected family harm incident.

Her appointment came not long before International Volunteer Day, which is celebrated on 5 December.

This is a time for people to join with volunteers across the glabe to recognise the power of volunteering.

When they arrived they found Mr Wipa holding a weapon, which the Police could not identify, to his partner’s neck and was threatening her.

Police engaged in “extensive negotiations” and made “verbal appeals” but were not able to resolve the situation, the Police’s Wellington District Commander, Superintendent Corrie Parnell said at a press conference following the shooting.

Cordons were put in place over a wide stretch of Coast Road with local people unable to cross the cordons while Police negotiated with Mr Wipa, but he continued threatening to harm the woman.

Super intendent Pa r nell also noted that Mr Wipa was “behaving in an agitated manner”.

Police shot him at about 1pm, firing just one shot. Police provided Mr Wipa medical

assistance but he died at the scene.

His partner was not injured and Police said they were providing her with support.

Members of Mr Wipa’s whānau were at the scene at the time, the Police said.

Mr Wipa’s sister Marama Daniels has set up a fundraiser on gofundme to help contrinute to the cost of her, her sister and four children who live in Australia travelling to New Zealand for Mr Wipa’s tangi.

This was to give Mr Wipa “the send off he deserves,” Marama wrote on the gofundme page. People can acces the page by typing “gofundme flights to nz” into Google.

Mr Wipa, who was 36 years old, was deported from Australia to New Zealand in 2012 following years of offending, including violent offending.

The first recorded offence took place when he was 14 years old.

Kokiri Marae Pātaka Kai is looking for donations to help whānau who are stuggling to put food on the table and Presents under the tree this Christmas.

New High School Deputy Principal Jono Broom is the new Deputy Principal of Wainuiomata High School.

Jono has come to the school from Taipa Area School in the far north of New Zealand, where he has served as Deputy Principal for several years.

He has two small children aged two and four.

The drive for moving back to Wellington, Jono says, was to be closer to his family and for his children to have more of a relationship with their grandparents.

Jono has experience in many different parts of the country, including Gisborne and Christchurch.

Born and raised in Dunedin, he brings with him expertise around learning in open learning environments, having worked in two brand new schools across the country.

Fireworks for Matariki

Parliament is being asked to allow public fireworks sales for four extra days for Matariki.

A petition asking for this has been posted on the petitions page of the New

Zealand Parliament website.

Posted by Liam Kilpatrick, the petition is currently open for signatures.

The petition will close on 31 May 2024.

Liam has posted a link to the petition on the Wainuiomata Community Noticeboard Facebook page.

Titiro Whakamua Teen Parent School offers a chance to continue in secondary education either during pregnancy or after the baby is born.

The aim of this school/kura is to see young parents reach for their dreams by providing a full wrap-around service of education, health, wellbeing, and helping them to establish a future direction.

The kura supports students to attain credits towards NCEA Level 1-3 and in parenting/ life skills.

The school provides some transport supporting students to get to and from kura.

A fully registered Early Childhood Centre is on site to educate and care for the infants and toddlers/tamariki while the students are in class.

The kura will be taking pre-enrolments for 2024 on Tuesday 30 January 2024, from 9:30am to 3pm.

Titiro Whakamua Teen Parent School is a satellite of Heretaunga College and is at 34 Miro Street, Wallaceville, Upper Hutt.

Council website wins award Hutt City Council has won the 2023 website of the year award.

The accolade was presented at the 16 November Association of Local Government Information Management (ALGIM) Awards 2023.

“With more than 78 councils and two council-controlled organisations audited this is something to be proud of,” the council says in a media release.

The website was a former Go Digital Programme project and is managed to its award-winning level by the Customer Experience Team.

Customer Experience Advisor, Nicole Noldus says that “our role is to serve our community and one of the best ways to do

that is to provide them with the information they are looking for.

“Presenting this in an accessible way ensures everyone can find, access, and understand what they need to.

“Getting information into our customers’ hands up front also means our Customer Services Team and Front Desk support staff can spend more time looking after more difficult enquiries, so it has a benefit throughout the business,” she says.

The ALGIM Web Audit is undertaken to provide a stock take and trends of how councils are tracking to comply with web standards, enhance accessibility, increase their digital services, engagement and website presence within the local government sector.

Successful evening for young Rugby players

The Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club held a very successful launch of its Pathway Programme on 16 November.

The programme was established by the club’s newly appointed Directors of Rugby Daniel Smith and Moana Kuma.

Their goal was to engage with members from junior rugby who have now left college and to prepare the colts players for their transition to senior rugby.

22 school leavers and colts attended with their families.

Hurricanes Development Coach, Darren Larsen also came along to lend

some insight into high performance Rugby.

Wainuiomata Rugby has also begun a trial period of a gym facility at the club.

The trial consists of 35 current senior players, who will complete a strength and conditioning progamme over 12 weeks.

All going well, and following a successful trial period, they hope to open the gym facilities to all club members

by March 2024.

At the end of the evening a meal was shared between the club’s senior players, colts, school leavers and whānau to give them the opportunity to mix and mingle.

Ulalei summer Football kicks off Ulalei Wainuiomata Sport’s inaugural primary school football competition kicked off last week in blustery conditions at Wise Park.

The strong winds did not deter the 24 teams from enjoying their first dose of summer football.

“It was an awesome night for our tamariki who have been looking forward to this event since signing up at school,” Pukeatua Primary

School Principal Topsy Remuera says.

The weekly competition is the first of its kind for primary schools and includes teams from six of Wainuiomata’s primary schools including one allgirls team, Wahine Toa, from Wa inuiomata Inter mediate School.

Ulalei itself has four teams

which are made up of tamaiti who live in Wainuiomata but attend school over the hill. These players represent seven different schools in Lower Hutt.

The organisers are also thrilled to have a team of Wainuiomata tamariki who attend Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa in Alicetown.

Wainuiomata High School hosted the very successful 2023 National Junior KĪ o Rahi competition from 14 to 16 November.

“It was a [very] good tournament,” says Mātauranga Te Rauna, who teaches at the school and is the main organiser of KĪ o Rahi there.

“We got compliments on how well run and how well organised it was.

“What is important is to make sure that our manuhiri are well looked after and they were,” he says.

The Wainuiomata High School team also performed outstandingly in the tournament, held for year 9 and 10 students.

It finished fourth – and was the best of the teams from Wellington.

Wainuiomata High narrowly lost its semi final 21-19 to the eventual tournament winner, Te Wharekura o Te Rau Aroha from Waitoa in the Waikato, The fourth placing was the same result as the school’s senior team achieved in the national senior tournament in April.

“I’m happy with that,” Mr Te Rauna says.

The event attracted 22 teams, all from the North Island.

The players were welcomed to the event at a Powhiri held at the Wainuiomata Marae at 4pm on Tuesday 14 November.

The competition kicked off the next day with the first of the round robin matches. Each team played four matches during the round robin play.

Post section play began at 9am on Thursday 16 November, followed by the prizegiving in the afternoon.

This is only the second year that the National Junior KĪ o Rahi competition has been held.

Race win for Wainui’s Whitaker

Wainuiomata’s Jake Whitaker won motorcycling’s Nutbuster Enduro in Christchurch on 18 November.

However it was not enough to see him claim the 2023 New Zealand Hard Enduro Championship – a title he won last year.

The second and final round of the championship was held with one Nutbuster on 17 November and a seocnd on 18 November.

Jake won Saturday’s Nutbuster enduro ahead of Daniel Herbert.

Sam Parker was third, enabling him to secure the overall championship and his father Tony Parker was fourth.

Tony finished second to Jake in last year’s New Zealand Hard Enduro championship.

The weekend’s national event in Canterbury doubled up as round two of the South Island Hard Enduro Championships and Sam Parker was also declared winner of that separatebut-parallel series.
