The exercise saw a Wainuiomata fire engine and crew dispatched to a medical call where a person had collapsed.

On arrival the officer in charge discovered that there were 10 casualties around the pool in various states of consciousness, as well as an upturned drum containing an unknown substance.

The officer in charge rapidly escalated the call to a hazardous material second alarm response.

This resulted in a second crew from the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade plus its operational support crew as well as one crew from Stokes Valley and one from Remutaka added to the call and who responded.

Restored Baring Head cottage unveiled

A newly restored lighthouse keeper’s cottage at Baring Head/ Ōrua-pouanui was unveiled by Greater Wellington and the Friends of Baring Head charitable trust on 14 December.

This is the first of two cottages that will be restored to become modern accommodation for overnight visitors.

This was “a special opening event [with] sun, views [and a] good crowd,” says Wellington Regional Counillor Quentin Duthie.

“I can’t wait to stay the night.

“I will let the Wainuiomata community know when bookings [for the restored cottage] open in the New Year.

“Staying the night will be a most amazing experience for a family group or bunch of friends in a unique and stunning location,” Cr Duthie says.

The cottages are part of a complex that includes Aotearoa New Zealand’s first fully-electric lighthouse, built in 1935.

Earlier this year, the complex was added to the New Zealand Heritage list as having “outstanding historical significance”.

The restored cottage will provide a rare opportunity for visitors to stay at the unique, heritage-listed lighthouse complex from 2024, Greater Wellington deputy chair Adrienne Staples says.

“We are opening the door to a glimpse of life as a lighthouse keeper.

“The renovation of the cottage is a

testament to the devoted members of Friends of Baring Head, who saw the opportunity to breathe new life into the complex.

“As a council, we are proud to be one of the many guardians of Baring Head.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors from home and abroad to this stunning stretch of coastline, where they can immerse themselves in a place rich with history and memory,” Cr Staples says.

Revenue generated by the accommodation will go towards maintaining other buildings in the complex and renovating the second cottage.

Paula Warren, chair of the Friends of Baring Head, remembers the late Colin Ryder who was a driving force in arguing to protect the cottages and secure $400,000 in funding for the restoration.

“Sadly, Colin passed away in 2021, and I know he would have loved to see the outcome of his vision and efforts,” Paula says.

“It was Colin who led the campaign to have the Baring Head land bought and protected in 2010.

“The Friends of Baring Head continue to champion the protection of the park and lighthouse complex, and provide funding and volunteer work to make the restoration possible.

“We are helping to create an asset that will be enjoyed by generations to come.”

The Tupoki Takarangi Trust are the land block neighbours of the

site, and ahi kā at Parangarahu and Ōrua-pouanui as part of Te Āti Awa. “The Trust is pleased to see Greater Wellington restore the lighthouse keeper’s cottage and surrounding buildings,” says Lee Hunter, Chair of the Tupoki Takarangi Trust.

“We have a strong relationship with Greater Wellington, who share our ahi kā values as we care for our coastline and whenua.”

The most significant parts of the restoration are unseen, with the installation of fresh and wastewater management systems, Greater Wellington East Harbour park ranger Jo Greenman says.

“We needed to modernise the cottage while preserving its heritage features.

“The cottage has been furnished with antique and second-hand furniture to create that lovely 1930 to 1940s feel.

“However, the luxury of running taps and flushing toilets on a remote site shouldn't be underestimated.

“We also stripped the 1980s lino to reveal native timber floorboards, uncovered the original 1930s shiplap interior, and repainted the cottage in historic colours.

“It’s a joy to see people exploring Baring Head, and very soon they will be able to extend their visit in a cottage on the edge of the world,” Ms Greenman says.

Pataka Kai preparing for Xmas rush

Kōkiri Marae’s Pātaka Kai is currently preparing for the increase in demand that is highly likely to happen with Christmas.

Based at St Peters Church hall in Wise Street, it is the only food bank in the Wellington region that operates five days a week, from Monday to Friday.

As well as people collecting food boxes from its base, Pātaka Kai also delivers to people in the community thanks to the service provided by its volunteer delivery team.

Pātaka Kai is a national leader, a fact that has been demonstrated with a national award.

Pātaka Kai is a member of the Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective which was awarded Local Government New Zealand’s Kāinga Ora Home and Communities Excel-

lence Award for social well-being.

Pātaka Kai was a “major contributor” to the initiative – a partnership between Hutt City Council and Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective to deliver food during the 2020 lockdown, Hutt City Mayor Campbell Barry told the “Wainuiomata News” just after the award was announced.

“That [Wainuiomata] group has filled a genuine gap all across the city,” the Mayor said.

Pātaka Kai was, in fact, the initiator in setting up what would become the Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective, the largest kai collective in New Zealand.

During the 2020 Covid lockdown, Pātaka Kai’s co-ordinator at that time, Janis Awatere began the process by establishing a partnership with Epuni-based Common Unity.

Ulalei Ifilele undefeated in Netball Hutt Valley’s twilight competiton For the last 6 weeks, the young Ulalei Suni and Ulalei Ifilele teams competed in this competition.

Ulalei Ifilele, is a new addition to the growing club, coached and managed by power duo Maria and Piri Gillies. Ulalei will have a total of eight teams for the 2023 season.

Ifilele is made up of mostly year 8 students who have been attending intermediate schools across Te Awa Kairangi ki tai.

In November, Ifilele competed in a tournament held in the Manawatu and won their grade.

In a thrilling conclusion to their season, Ulalei Ifilele showcased their talent, determination and sports(wo)manship winning their final match.

“They are a beautiful bunch of young talented girls who made our job easy,” Coach Maria Gillies says.

“They turned up week in, week out for trainings and games, and it was nice to see them having fun,

as this was their first time playing as a team.”

Despite facing some tough opponents, Ulalei Suni demonstrated exceptional teamwork and excellent skills.

Coach Lagi Moananu expressed pride in the players’ growth, both individually and collectively. The team has been playing together since 2021, and their growth in the game has shown throughout this season.

Ulalei Suni played their first tournament in June competing at the annual King’s Birthday weekend tournament, winning their grade. The team also travelled to Manawatu in August with Ifilele to compete in a Junior Grade tournament.

“These were all new and great opportunities for these young ones to expand their skill level and interest in the game” Manager Mel Laban says.

Pedro Garcias, who rose to prominence with stella performances in both the Central and National League, is joining the Wainuiomata Football Club as head coach of the men’s first team for 2024.

The Chilean born Pedro moved to New Zealand in 2002 and since then has established a great record as a player and a coach.

He played for both Team Wellington and Waitakere United in the National League, and has also played for the Gisborne City first team, Heartland Wairarapa and Lower Hutt City.

As well as playing for Gisborne City, Pedro has coached both the reserve team and junior Football.

His long list of coaching appointments has included directing the Stop Out women’s first team, Heartland Wairarapa and Football at Wainuiomata

High School.

Pedro succeeds Mark Foster, who has departed the club after coaching the men’s first team for the last two years.

Scott McLeod has been appointed as the reserve team coach for 2024.

Scott has a long history with the club, playing his first game for the club in 1977.

In 1987 Scott was part of the first team that won the Central League 3 title.

Scott took on the first team coaching role in 1993 and in 1995 he was in charge when the club secured the Central Premier League Title.

Scott has a wealth of coaching experience, also winning titles with Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt Reserves, and coaching juniors at club and representative level including coaching at Centres of Excellence.

Switch off Xmas tree lights

“Don’t forget to switch off your Christmas tree lights before hitting the sack,” the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade says on its Facebook page.

The brigade also has some really good advice for people using real trees.

“A watered tree is a safe tree,” the brigade says.

“Your Christmas tree could go up in flames within a minute, so make sure there’s always water in your tree stand.”

This advice is for real Christmas trees. It’s best not to water an artificial tree.

The Facebook post shows a video of a dry tree going up in flames, beside a watered tree, which is hardly affected by the fire.

The brigade is also warning people about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries.

“Don't let lithium-ion batteries steal your Christmas.

“Many devices, powertools, and toys use lithiumion batteries and if they are damaged or charged incorrectly, they can cause a violent fire within seconds.

“Here are some tips to ensure your Christmas doesn’t go up in smoke: • Only purchase and use devices and equipment from reputable manufacturers and suppliers.

• Don’t leave your devices or batteries in direct

After a busy first half of summer, Ulalei Wainuiomata sports teams now break for Christmas until they return to action in February 2024.

Ulalei’s seven tag Football teams rounded off the year with victories on 13 December at Nga Hau e Wha Wainuiomata’s popular competition at Wise Park.

Ulalei’s senior touch team Ulalei Vailele finished fourth in Total Touch’s competition played at Hutt Park on 15 December.

Ulalei Vailele proudly boasts two players in Billie Va’a and Keira Su’a-Smith who played in the Global Youth Sevens tournament in Auckland last weekend.

That tournament has uncovered stars like Black Ferns Jorja Miller and All Blacks Caleb Clarke, Hoskins Sotutu and Emoni

Narawa.

Finally, Ulalei’s highly successful inaugural primary school Football competition ended its first term on 11 December in glorious sunshine at Wise Park.

The football competition field is likely to explode with more teams from schools who could not participate this term expected to register teams.

Such is the success of the competition, other summer codes are in talks to replicate the format next term which is fantastic for Wainuiomata’s tamariki.

Xmas lunch The Samoan Baptist Church Wainuiomata will be giving away a free lunch on 24 December.

The church is providing the free lunch in the spirit of Christmas as a way of showing its love to the community.

It will take place from 1pm to 2pm at the hub tomorrow (21 December).

Difficult decisions need to be made by Hutt City Council between now and next year’s Long Term Plan (LTP) on where to prioritise spending, Mayor Campbell Barry says.

His comment came following a meeting of the council on 12 December to make decisions on key parts of the LTP for 2024 to 2034.

“We’re in a tough economic climate,” the Mayor says.

“The rising cost of living is making life very difficult for many ratepayers.

“Families are stretching their budgets and businesses are struggling with higher costs.

“We need to prioritise what we need to do and what we can ask our community to pay for.

“We are not alone in these challenging times.

“Councils up and down the country are facing significant rates rises in order to both meet fixed essential costs and invest in much-needed transport and water infrastructure.

“Fixing our pipes and other water infrastructure is our top priority and is expected to cost $1.5 billion over the next 10 years.

“The Seaview Wastewater Treatment Plant alone requires significant investment urgently, with over $110 million budgeted for the next few years.

“This work is critical to ensuring the plant complies with its consents.

“There has been historical under-investment, and it will continue to cost us unless we act now.

“The challenges with water

infrastructure, and the cost burden it will put on our ratepayers demonstrates why reform is desperately needed.

“Council’s funding and financing tools simply can’t cope with the cost of dealing with decades of under-investment, growth and aging assets.

“We need the new government to act with urgency to address this now,” Mayor Barry says.

Council is currently proposing a 15.9% rates revenue increase (after growth), an average of $9.89 per week for a residential property.

Most of this increase relates to unavoidable cost pressures including water infrastructure and services, transport, insurances, and higher interest rates on borrowing.

The council is currently working through the key focus areas for the consultation.

These will be presented to the community and people can have their say during the LTP consultation in April next year.

Elected members will consider this feedback before the LTP is finalised on 30 June 2024.

“Everyone’s voice on our Long Term Plan matters,” the Mayor says.

“We’re making these plans for all of us, so everyone should have their say.

“We want our plans to match what people really need and care about.

“So when the draft Long Term Plan goes out for consultation in April, make sure you are heard,” he says.

Apart from Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, when it will be closed, the Wainuiomata Swimming Pool will be open over the holiday period.

The hours the pool will be open over the holidays are: • December 24, 10am to 3pm; • December 26 to 30, 10am to 6pm;

• December 31, 10am to 5pm; and • January 2 to 7, 10am to 6pm.

Hutt City Council’s Wainuiomata neighbourhood hub is currently closed for the holiday period.

The hub will, however, open for four days between Christmas and New Year.

It will be open from 10am to 5pm from 27 to 30 December.

The hub will reopen for 2024 on Wednesday 3 January.
