Kakapo a possibility Continued from page 1 He says having the land and the money to develop it into a sanctuary is only one part of the process. Getting Kakapo settled in the sanctuary is down to whether the kaitiaki of the Kakapo are happy to allow the birds to come.

Some of the government organisations like DOC and Greater Wellington Regional Council see themselves as owners and managers, he says, and the language needs to change to be a co-ownership, and co-management and have kaitiaki; guardians, protectors and conservers.

“If they are looking at having Kakapo then that is what is really important, we all need to be of one mind in terms of being kaitiaki,” Anania says.

“The second thing is with iwi and especially with Ngai Tahu who are the kaitiaki of

the Kakapo it so they take a lead role in decisions regarding the bird.”

“It is not Greater Wellington Regional Council or Zealandia or DOC and it is not us and it is really important that our relationship with them as manawhenua is good.”

Anania decribes it as like a parent child relationship with Ngai Tahu having all the expertise and Te Atiawa learning from them.

“The relationship is really important so they are happy to pass them over to us,” he says.

Ngai Tahu representative Tane Davis has been to have a look at the proposed area for the birds and liked what he saw.

Once the relationship has been established with iwi the next in line is the crown and then all the other departments.

Illegal online selling of paua Fishery Officers have arrested a man for obstruction while investigating the alleged illegal sale of paua via social media.

Gary Orr, acting Deputy Director General Compliance and Governance, said that “In the days prior to the arrest, MPI

received at least 65 notifications from the public of a man offering one-litre containers of paua for $50 each via Facebook”.

It is illegal to sell, trade or barter recreationally caught fish and shellfish.

“MPI was contacted on Friday

morning (January 7), advising that a man related to the Facebook posts was going to be at a Lower Hutt location, to sell two containers of paua,” Mr Orr says.

“Fishery Officers approached the alleged seller, who was on foot and while they were speak-

ing to him, he ran off. After a short chase, he was arrested for obstructing the Fishery Officers and taken to the Lower Hutt Police Station.”

With the warm weather over the last week, there has been a spike in water use, as well as a drop in our river levels.

Wellington Water has put together a graph which shows that our available water supply is just meeting demand. It’s important we all start using less water now so that we have plenty to get us through the summer period.

Save water by recycling your bath or shower water by using it on your garden - but only on plants that are not going to be eaten (i.e don’t put greywater on your vegetable garden). Make sure you use your greywater immediately and don’t store it. Storing greywater can create disease causing organisms to increase, especially during hot weather.

The “Cool As” Summer Refresher Drink Challenge ™, into its seventh year, will see 17 hospitality operators including cafes, restaurants, bars, and a bakery in Lower Hutt create their own limited edition signature summer refresher drinks for people to enjoy over two weeks.

Customers will be the given the chance to vote for their favourite drink by QR code located in each cafe or on “Cool As Challenge ™” Summer Refresher’s Facebook, and Instagram pages, with the winning drink declared at the end of the challenge which takes place from 13 - 31 January, 2022.

The challenge, founded by the Hutt City Council to inspire local cafes to be creative and attract people to the Lower Hutt CBD, has grown in popularity since it was launched in 2016. It was also the direct result of the successful Sweet As Hot Chocolate Challenge™, in which Central Hutt cafes create signature hot chocolates for customers to taste and rank over three weeks in winter.

CCDHB to reach 90 per cent fully vaccinated for Maori Capital & Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) is just 13 people away from 90 per cent of Maori having received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, which would make it the first DHB in the country to reach this milestone.

Hutt Valley is also closing in on the 90 per cent target, with fewer than 750 Maori yet to receive their second dose.

inbrief news Research tackles toxic chemicals used in batteries A new battery technology could provide a cleaner and cheaper alternative to the toxic chemicals widely used in energy storage devices.

Dr Fraser Hughson, who has recently completed his PhD in Chemistry at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, is part of a team that’s developed a water-based electrolyte for use in batteries.

Dr Hughson’s research has focused on finding a greener alternative to conventional batteries.

Dr Hughson says the development of a water-based electrolyte that was cheap to produce had the potential to provide a much-needed replacement for the battery technology used in electric vehicles, including buses and trains.

Death following 2 January crash – Wainuiomata A person critically injured in a crash in Wainuiomata on 2 January has passed away in hospital.

The single-vehicle crash on Coast Road was reported to Police at 11.45pm on 2 January.

A 35-year-old man had been in Wellington Hospital with critical injuries since the crash and died earlier today.

Two other people were in the car at the time of the crash and received minor to moderate injuries.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Toxic algae Hutt river sites Swimmers and dog owners are being advised to avoid areas of the Hutt River from the Moonshine Bridge down to just upstream of Taita Rock (but not including Taita Rock), as high levels of toxic algae, including detached algal mats have been identified at two monitoring sites along the river.

Greater Wellington Marine and Freshwater Team Leader, Dr Evan Harrison said, “Monitoring data at the Hutt River at Silverstream Bridge, and Hutt River upstream of Silverstream bridge returned red alert levels of toxic algae. This means there are high levels of cyanobacteria present rendering the site unsuitable for swimming and it should be avoided”.

Toxic algae presents a significant health risk as swallowing water containing the bacteria can make people very sick, with pieces as small as a 50c coin enough to kill dogs.

The presence of detached algal mats carries increased risk as the algae has broken off rocks and can wash up on the river’s edge where dogs, who love the smell and taste, can easily spot it. Young children should also be watched closely if in the area to ensure they do not come into contact with toxic algae.

Greater Wellington monitors a large proportion of freshwater and coastal sites around the region, publishing updated safe swimming data weekly on the LAWA website.

“There are plenty of spots we monitor, and a suitable swimming location may be just a stone’s throw away. Excluding Silverstream, there are four further locations we monitor in Upper Hutt.

As Summer rolls on, people taking the plunge with or without their four-legged friends should continue to check online before hopping into the water and be aware of what toxic algae looks like” added Dr Harrison.

With akonga numbers growing daily for programmes starting in early 2022, and the ongoing priority to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of our Whitireia and WelTec whanau, it has been decided that all kaimahi (staff), akonga (learners), and manuhiri (visitors) attending Whitireia and WelTec campuses will need to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 from February 7, Whitireia and WelTec Chief Executive Mark Oldershaw says.

This decision was made after consultation with local community, kaimahi, akonga, iwi partners, and Pacific communities.

“One of Whitireia and WelTec’s key values is to be responsive to our communities,” Mark says.

“We have listened and have acted to ensure all campuses are a safe place to study and

learn, while remaining welcoming to our communities.

“We see it as essential to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all who step onto our multiple campuses. Following consultation, it was clear that this is what our communities, kaimahi, akonga, and partners believe is the right thing to do.”

Whitireia and WelTec domestic enrolments for 2022 are looking strong with early indications of an increase over the last two years.

“There is growing recognition among school leavers, and those wishing to retrain, that vocational education prepares graduates for the workplace leading to immediate and diverse employment opportunities,” says Mr Oldershaw.

“We’re working closely with key sectors and employers across Wellington and the wider re-

gion to make sure we are taking a coordinated approach to meeting regional skills demands and creating pathways for our graduates directly into work.

“With NCEA results out this week, school leavers are considering their next steps. A strong grounding in vocational education can open doors and accelerate career progression,” he says.

Many areas of study are also still free - covered by the Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF).

Twenty must do events this summer

Greater Wellington is claiming it’s summer events programme with twenty awesome parks and nature related events as the hottest ticket in town.

“The claim may be a little cheeky but we’re sure there’s something in our programme for everyone” Viv Morduant, Greater Wellington Events & Sponsorship Lead says.

The events on offer span a broad spectrum, from a relaxed kiwi style drive-in movie immersed in nature at Battle Hill Forest Park to high octane, fourwheel drive adventures through the beautiful Belmont Regional Park.

The region’s lush parks feature heavily but those looking to escape that ‘classic Wellington summer heat’ can whet their appetites and themselves with one

of three community led snorkel days in either Whitireia Park or Taputeranga Marine Reserve.

Most events are family friendly and encourage parents to bring along their kids. Viv has brought her kids to multiple events, saying “It’s a great way to get out of the house, tire the kids out and show them somewhere or something new in our beautiful region.

“The best event for kids, however, would have to be Child vs Wild”.

Held at Kaitoke Regional Park, kids will learn about the native creatures of Aotearoa, building shelters and fires from scratch, as well as basic bushcraft skills from Nature School NZ. The focus is on having fun, while learning from nature.

“The programme is all about

showing off the beauty of our region and creating whanaungatanga (unforgettable memories) with friends and family. We really hope to see good numbers of Wellingtonians, visitors to the region and hopefully some returnees from last year out enjoying this year’s events”.

All events will operate under the Government COVID-19 Protection Framework (traffic light system) and some may require vaccine passports.

To ensure physical distancing requirements, some events will have limited spots and a booking will be required.

The Summer events programme runs from January until March and interested locals and holiday makers can find out more and book their place at gw.govt.nz/summerevents.

Alternative milks popular

A warm summer hasn’t stopped the cravings for coffee and Wainuomata’s Coffee @ The Strand has been grateful for the support they have had from locals over the last ten months.

Even with COVID messing with the daily rhythm of peoples lives, coffe has still been popular, barista Renee Mauriohooho says.

“All the local support we have had has been awesome. Even in the summer people are still keen on their coffee and right from the start we wanted to have a reputation for good coffee and getting to know the locals has been amazing,” Renee says.

One of the surprising things Renee says is the variety of alternative milks customers like in their coffee, from oat milk to soy.

Cemetery Circuit motorcycle race resurrection

It took a global virus outbreak to bring Whanganui’s iconic and world-renowned Cemetery Circuit motorcycle race meeting to its knees this year.

But the fight-back has already begun and plans are in place to make it bigger and better than ever with a “resurrection” of the three-round Suzuki International Series set to take place in 2022.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced organisers to reluctantly cancel the 2021 running of the immensely-popular motorcycle racing series and its street race finale – the first time in 70 years there will be no racing around the streets of Whanganui on Boxing Day – as demand for vaccine passports and the huge

numbers of spectators expected placed an impossible strain on event management.

But, undeterred by the set-back, a massive resurgence is being planned for 2022, when it may also be possible to welcome back international racing stars to again light up the tarmac on the world-famous Cemetery Circuit.

The popular three-round Suzuki International Series had to be put on ice for 2021, but it will be thawed out again to mark its 13th season next December, with Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park again the traditional round to kick things off, with racing on Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon, in Feilding, the following weekend, and the Cemetery Circuit race meeting on Boxing Day the traditional

final showdown.

Every season (except, tragically, this one) the safety barriers have been put up alongside Whanganui’s world-renowned motorcycle “street fight”, with straw bales positioned and spectator fencing laid out along the gutters of the city’s public streets.

“We already have many internationals wanting to come back out in 2022,” Suzuki International Series promoter and organiser Allan ‘Flea’ Willacy says.

First started in 1951, the Cemetery Circuit final round event should be another scorcher on Boxing Day next year, both in terms of the sun beating down and in terms of riders, unleashed from pandemic restrictions, once again frantically trying to beat each other to the chequered flag.

What’s Cooking... Online school launches in Make Mexican-Style Corn on the Cob in an Air Fryer Ingredients:

Method:

s 4 ears fresh corn (about 1 1/2 lb.), shucked s Cooking spray s 1 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter s 2 teaspoons chopped garlic s 1 teaspoon lime zest plus s 1 Tbsp. fresh juice (from 1 lime) s 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt s 1/2 teaspoon black pepper s 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

1. Lightly coat corn with cooking spray, and place in a single layer in air fryer basket. Cook at 200°C until tender and slightly charred, 14 minutes, turning corn over halfway through cooking.

2. Meanwhile, stir together butter, garlic, lime zest, and lime juice in a small microwavable bowl. Microwave on HIGH until butter is melted and garlic is fragrant, about 30 seconds. Place corn on a platter and pour over butter mixture. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and cilantro. Serve immediately.

Garry’s mixed media By: Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata Garry Gerard, artist and tutor, puts on his third solo exhibition of mixed media at the Odlins Gallery in Lower Hutt this week.

Nowadays he concentrates on old masters style work but this exhibition is filled with a range of media from a beautiful boulder in the shape of a skull to an old treasure map,

rocks as memorials to pets and carving.

Garry is a full time tutor at newly opened MIX in Wainuiomata MIX is a place for connecting, creating and is a mental health community day service offering programmes in art and wellbeing for everyone.

His exhibition at the Odlins Gallery will run from the 17th to the 30th of January from 10am to 4pm daily.

Avoiding mistakes : By Wally Richards Every week I receive phone calls from gardeners that are having problems with their tomatoes, beans and roses.

Within no time at all they are describing funny new growths on their tomatoes or beans or roses.

These growths are distorted, feathery or just strange looking.

The problem is caused by herbicides ZKLFK WKH SODQW KDV KDV D ZL൵ RI LQ D very small dose of parts per million.

If it had been much stronger the plant would be dying.

Often when this happens people think it is spray drift and that is a possibility.

A neighbour or another one a mile down the road could have a a calm still day sprayed Roundup or a lawn weed killer.

Calm, still days are the worst times to spray except for windy days.

(Actually windy days are better than calm days).

What happens is this: You spray and very small droplets are lifted up by conventional air currents (heat rises) DQG XS WKH\ JR WR EH À RDWLQJ DURXQG and drifting on any little breeze higher up till sometime they gain weight by combining or gathering dust and they drop.

If they drop onto susceptible plants such as tomatoes, beans or roses then you will likely have some funny looking new growths.

The best time to spray herbicides when there is a breeze as this will prevent droplets being carried upwards and your spray will go to the targeted weeds.

If you add Raingard to your herbicide spray you will get a 50 percent better kill.

Now lets say you do this when there is a breeze and you are applying 7XU¿ [ RU VRPH RWKHU ZHHG NLOOHU WKDW will kill a range of weeds but will not harm mature lawn grass.

Weeds die and you mow your lawn.

You have read the information on the herbicide bottle that says you should not compost your lawn clippings for six months or so.

That is because the herbicide will be active in the grass clippings for a number of months and several mowings.

Think for a moment about your cat or dog that likes to chew on a bit of

grass as part of their diet or chew on a lot to make themselves sick to bring up a hair ball or something.

So after applying your lawn weed killer you can’t use the lawn clippings for compost so what do you do?

I know; take them to the green waste recycling place they just love plant material which they can turn into compost and sell to people.

Well you can’t put them into your compost because of the herbicide.

There is another option if you have herbicide laden lawn clippings put them under mature trees and shrubs to dispose of them.

They will only show problems to the trees and shrubs after years of doing this by starting to turn yellow in the foliage.

Now at sometime you go and buy a branded bag of compost to put around \RXU JDUGHQ RU WR JURZ VWX൵ LQ LW You do not know if that brand used green waste in their compost or not and you do not know if it contains any herbicide residue.

You put it around your gardens no problems but around roses, tomatoes and beans you might find some strange new foliage. Then you will know it contained herbicide.

Most other plants will show no obvious signs of a problem because they are not sensitive to herbicides at parts per million.

Now then go out to a farm where there are say thistles growing in the paddock, the farmer knows that the thistles will seed and multiply and that they are not a food source for cattle unless you are running goats.

So Mr Farmer picks out a herbicide that will kill the thistles but will not harm the grass as he wants the grass fore his stock and any spray drift will not matter as grass sprayed will not die.

Great but the cattle/sheep grazing will likely eat the herbicide grass which probably does nothing for their health and longevity.

Residue of the herbicide will pass through the animal and end up as manure.

Put that around your roses and see what happens.

I remember years ago in Palmerston North when I had a garden centre and suddenly a n umber of gardeners was bring in strange foliage from roses and tomatoes.

It came back to a fund raising drive by a local club the sold bags of sheep manure collected from under a shearing shed to gardeners.

2QH WKDW ¿ UVW DSSHDUHG D IHZ \HDUV back was pea straw used in gardens causing strange new growths on susceptible plants (roses and tomatoes).

Problem was caused by the farmers that sprayed the pea crop with Roundup after harvesting the peas so that the foliage would die and dry out quick so they could bundle it up and sell it.

There is a simple test you can do to ¿ QG RXW LI D FRPSRVW RU PDQXUH KDV herbicide in it.

Place a few bean seeds into the material and keep moist and see if the beans grow and that they are not distorted. Also place a few of the bean seeds elsewhere to prove that they will germinate and not be distorted.

If both lots grow ok then likely the VWX൵ LV KHUELFLGH IUHH

River trail open Hutt Valley residents will be able to get out and try a new trial this summer with a walk along the Te Awa Kairangi (Hutt River) this year with a popular section of the trail re-opened.

The dousing of heavy rain in July last year eroded several areas including the scenic stretch between Trentham Memorial Park and Heretaunga which was closed for public safety.

As locals and holiday makers prepare to run and roam the riverbank again, work has started on ensuring rivers like Te Awa Kairangi are future fit for potential flooding events.

Rosco raises Black Caps to new heights Cricket in New Zealand has grown up with Ross Taylor.

That’s the best way I can sum-up Taylor’s foot-print on the game in this country.

When he arrived on the international scene as a dashing, hardhitting batsman in 2006, his talent was raw, unrefined yet undeniable.

As he exited his final test last week, he did so knowing he had left the Black Caps in far better shape than when he first donned the silver fern.

New Zealand on the global stage

have earned a level of legitimacy they have not had before.

Not even during the Hadlee-filled 1980s New Zealand teams was cricket in this country as respected as it is today and Taylor has had a lot to do with it.

That respect happens when you make back-to-back 50-over World Cup finals, tie one (yes we did), win the first World Test Championship final and even though he wasn’t part of it, make the final of the Twenty20 World Cup. With Taylor’s help, New Zealand

is no longer seen as a bunch of battlers who will give teams a good go on home soil but generally fail away from home.

Now, we have a phenomenal home record and have had some big overseas triumphs against the likes of Pakistan and England.

Taylor has been a huge part of that.

Even during the captaincy drama with Brendon McCullum and coach Mike Hesson in 2012, Taylor handled himself with class, never put his own needs ahead of

the team and simply rolled-up his sleeves and got on with it.

A more selfish man would have walked away after losing the leadership and splintered the team for years to come.

That simply is not Taylor’s style.

You can talk about the runs, the centuries, the catches at first slip, the square drives, slog-sweeps and questionable running between the wickets but the image at the end of the World Test Championship final with Kane Williamson is the defining image of New Zealand

cricket.

Taylor and Williamson are the two best batsmen the country has produced.

They have made each other better, pushed themselves and the Black Caps to unparalleled heights.

The team has grown as Taylor has grown and we as supporters have had many golden summers as a result.

As a fan, all I can say is thanks for the memories and enjoy retirement.

Wainuiomata beaten by Johnsonville in low-scoring encounter

The Wainuiomata first XI cricket team lost a low-scoring match to Johnsonville Reserves in their Division 3 50-over encounter at Alex Moore Park on Saturday.

Wainuiomata finished 45 runs short of Johnsonville’s 178 all out.

Wainuiomata’s Taj Ahuja gave his team hope by taking 5-26 with the ball from his 7.5 overs.

Opening bowler Jason Logan

managed 3-27 from his 10 overs to give Wainuiomata some early momentum in the field.

Karan Sood held the Johnsonville innings together with a determined 63 from 87 balls.

Wainuiomata could not get enough momentum into their run chase.

Opener Steve Dransfield managed 34 off 96 balls but there was little else of substance from the top-order as they slumped to 78-6 at one stage.

Wainuiomata was eventually dismissed for 133 in the 45th over.

Oliver Fernyhough managed 5-24 for Johnsonville.

Wainuiomata remain on top of the table after 10 rounds while Johnsonville rise to third.

Wainuiomata will face Victoria University at Bryan Heath Park on Saturday.

The club is also due to celebrate old timers day on Saturday 6th February.
