Two victories for Wainui girls Continued from page 1 Two Wainuiomata players also featured in the Pasifika Youth Cup in Auckland on 7 and 8 October.

Zerenity Mill-Simpson was selected in the Aotearoa New Zealand Māori under 13 team which won their section of the tournament.

Kyla Pasene was selected in the Aotearoa New Zealand Māori under 15 team and they also emerged victorious.

This tournament saw the Māori teams compete against Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands.

Another Wainuiomata player also featured in this competition.

Victoria Tanoai was selected in the under 13 Samoa team.

The 10 Wainuiomata players who took part in the 2023 Pasifika Youth Cup were: Kyla MerePasene, Riana Le’afa-Paki, Billie Vaa, Zerenity Mill-Simpson, Te Raukura Leafe, Te Ngaroahiahi Rimoni, Indiana Russell Lia, Luca Bella Ngatuere Ongley, Brooke Jones and Maia Davis.

As well as representing Nga Hau e Wha, the girls all play in the club competition for the Wainuiomata Rugby League Club.

Some of them also play Rugby Union, and are members of the Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club #NextGen girls.

Nga Hau e Wha was established in 2021, founded by Jemaine Pasene and Renee Davies.

In just two years it has established an impressive record.

It has fielded more than 20 teams in Māori Rugby League national competitions, both boys and girls.

Two back-to-back national titles came the club’s way in Aotearoa New Zealand Māori Rugby League competitions when it won the under 14 girls in 2021 and under 16 girls in 2022.

It also chalked up two backto-back titles in the Whakatipu Tournament in 2022 and 2023.

Nga Hau e Wha has produced 27 New Zealand representatives – seven New Zealand Māori representatives in 2021 and 11 New Zealand Māori in both 2022 and 2023.

The club also took its first men’s team to the Māori League national competition on 14 and 15 October.

“At Nga Hau e Wha we are very much a whanau club,” Jemaine says.

“We are very lucky and fortunate to have such an amzing crew from our staff, friends, whānau and our great community of Wainuiomata.

“The real reward is watching our kids learn, grow and develop into great young leaders on and off the field,” he says.

They can easily afford to halve the prices. It’s time for action not words.

The supermarkets throw out a lot of produce. I think they could re-use. It seems ridiculous they aren’t proactive by giving the wastage to locals who are struggling.

SGCNZ – The Winter’s Tale The Winter’s Tale has been reduced to a 50-minute, age-appropriate presentation for 5-12 year olds by co-Director/Mentor Deborah Rea. Appointed by Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ for its 2023 Primarily Playing with Shakespeare production, Deborah is working alongside the teachers from each school and community group. A lovely range of scenes from dinner party to pastoral paddock, plus a statue (or maybe several!) which comes to life, are being rehearsed in their own schools.

On the day of the performance, they will come together and four groups on each of the two lunchtimes will do a run of the whole performance for the first time sequentially in the morning, and perform for the public from 12.30pm – 1.30pm. They will end with a Jig en masse.

'Frozen Jr' an absolute blast From 27 September to 1 October, it snowed in Wainuiomata at least six times.

Well it did in the Wainuiomata High School Auditorium at least.

Audiences at Acting Out’s production of “Frozen Jr” were caught off-guard by the flurries as snow machines spread their magic at each show.

This was on top of the magical performances given by the children of Acting Out who performed to record numbers over the course of the week.

“It was an amazing week,” says Acting Out President Jeremy Yuile.

“Everything just came together.

The kids did a fantastic job, our tech team outdid themselves and every show sold out.

“We couldn’t have asked for more.”

What made it even more special, was the audience.

At each show, several young children came dressed as Elsa and Anna or wore Frozen merchandise.

“Seeing the delight on the young children’s faces as they met their Disney idol was a really special experience.

“We’re so proud of all our members but want to acknowledge our Annas, Elsas, Olaf and Sven who stayed in character as they were specifically sought out for photo opportunities,” Jeremy says.

“Frozen Jr” may be done and dusted but the team at Acting Out are already working on their 2024 showcase “Madagascar Jr”.

An Open Day is being held on 29 October for prospective new enrolments to come and see if Acting Out is for them.

“We have limited spaces available but we do like all potential enrolments to attend an Open Day so they can get an idea of what we do and see if they still want to join,” Jeremy says.

The Acting Out open day will be held on Sunday 29 October 2023, from 3:30 to 5pm at the Louise Bilderbeck Hall.

Hutt South looks to change hands

“It looks like Hutt South will have a different MP this term,” says National’s Chris Bishop.

This follows the election night vote tally which saw Chris leading the Hutt South incumbent Labour’s Ginny Andersen by 1,094 votes.

Chris attracted 14,872 votes while Ginny attracted 13,778.

“I’m very happy,” Chris told the “Wainuiomata News” the day after the election.

“Hutt South has always been a traditional Labour seat, so I’m happy to be in a good position on election night.

“We are just waiting for the counting of special votes now.”

As well as standing for Hutt South, Chris chaired National’s 2023 election campaign, and chaired it with success.

“National will form the next government,” he says.

And that is good news for Wainuiomata for a number of reasons.

National will work towards developing a second access for Wainuiomata, will work towards

the cross-valley link and also the Petone to Grenada link.

“These are significant developments for the Hutt Valley that will help Wainuiomata.

“Wainuiomata needs a second access.

“National committed to starting the investigation of the second access and I’m keen to get on with that as soon as I can.

“That was our commitment in the election and we will deliver on that,” he says.

Because it is unlikely that Chris will be overtaken once special votes are counted it will see him serve a second term as Hutt South’s MP. Chris won the Hutt South seat in 2017 before losing it to Ginny following the Labour landslide of 2020.

Chris first stood for Parliament when he contested the Hutt South seat against the long-serving Labour MP Trevor Mallard and cut Trevor’s majority from 4,825 to 709.

Despite not winning an electorate seat Chris entered Parliament for

the 2014-17 term, serving as a list MP. During that time he introduced a member’s bill, the Compensation for Live Organ Donors’ Act 2016, which was passed unanimously.

The bill aims to remove a financial deterrent to the donation of organs by live donors.

Although 2014 saw Chris entering Parliament for the first time as an MP, it was not his first experience of the House.

He was a member of the New Zealand Youth Parliament in 2000, selected to represent List MP Muriel Newman.

Chris graduated from Victoria University with first-class honours in Law and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Politics.

He won 10 intervarsity debating tournaments, including at the Cambridge Union and Sydney Union, and a range of awards for legal argument and oratory.

He met his partner, Jenna Raeburn, through the Victoria University Debating Society.

Chris is the Shadow Leader of the House of Parliament.

Resigned to serving as list MP

Ginny Andersen is resigned to the fact that she will probably not represent Hutt South in Parliament once the election results are finalised.

This follows the election night vote tally which saw National’s Chris Bishop leading the Hutt South incumbent by 1,094 votes.

Chris attracted 14,872 votes while Ginny attracted 13,778.

“It seems like a large margin to change on special votes,” Ginny says.

“I would like to acknowledge all the people across the [Hutt] Valley who helped my campaign.

“They worked really hard.

“And a lot of them were from Wainuiomata.”

Ginny will not be leaving Parliament however, as she will be a list

MP for Labour.

Early in her political career Ginny served as Chris Hipkins campaign manager in the Remutaka electorate during the 2008 election.

Six years later she stood herself, contesting the Ōhāriu seat in the 2014 election. She was standing against the long serving Ōhāriu MP Peter Dunne, the leader of the United Future party.

Ginny was only narrowly defeated, losing by just 610 votes.

She then served as the Labour Party’s Vice-President from 2015 to 2017, standing down to focus on running for Hutt South.

Although Chris defeated her to win the Hutt South seat in 2017, Ginny entered Parliament as a list MP. Three years laster Ginny turned the tables, winning the Hutt South

seat when she finished the race 3,777 votes ahead of Chris in 2020.

Ginny was appointed as the Minister for the Digital Economy and Communications, Minister for Small Business, Minister for Seniors, Associate Minister of Immigration and the Associate Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations in a cabinet reshuffle

She then became Minister of Police on 20 March following the resignation of Stuart Nash.

Ginny studied political science and Māori at Canterbury University before taking three years off to travel the world.

On her return to New Zealand, she continued her studies completing a master's degree in Political Science in 2004. Her thesis addressed indigenous self-determi-

nation based on the Crown's Treaty settlement with Ngai Tahu.

After graduating she worked at the Office of Treaty Settlements, and in 2004, became private secretary for Margaret Wilson on treaty negotiations.

After that, she became a political adviser for David Cunliffe and then Trevor Mallard.

In 2006 she began a job with the New Zealand Police.

She was employed as a policy unit manager focussing on gang problems, and organised crime.

She became a strategic adviser on Māori, Pacific and ethnic services with a focus on reducing Māori reoffending.

Ginny is married to Geoff Gwyn, a former Police inspector, whom she met while working for the Police.

New kitchen for Pataka Kai

The new mobile kitchen at Wainuiomata’s Pataka Kai is rapidly nearing completion.

“It is looking really good,” says Teresea Olsen of Kökiri Marae, adding that it will probably be finished by the end of October.

A new kitchen is being built in the car park at the front of Wainuiomata’s Pataka Kai. The new kitchen will be a place where whānau can learn to cook, as well as producing meals for kaumatua and those living without access to cooking facilities.

There are a number of whānau who don’t have a place where they can cook – especially those in motels, says Teresea Olsen of Kökiri Marae.

“Some motels don’t have any cooking facilities at all and there are families living there,” Ms Olsen says.

“And there are some families that don’t know how to cook.”

The kitchen will also be available to hungry people walking past who can call in for some kai, she says.

The new kitchen is being put together by three local builders who have come out of retirement for this project and who are

deeply committed to strengthening their community.

The kitchen itself is being built in a container and it will also have decking outside.

It has been three years since planning for the project began, with much of that time spent in achieving Hutt City Council consent.

The Pataka Kai’s māra kai will provide as much of the kai as possible for the kitchen to turn into meals.

Big planting at Waiu Wetland

A group of Forest and Bird volunteers, led by Gary James, planted more than 700 plants at Waiu Wetland on 30 September.

Gary has had groups of volunteers on regular working bees, clearing and planting throughout Waiu Park for several years.

Forest and Bird has been working in partnership with A Rocha, with the support of Hutt City Council, since 2012 helping to restore the Waiau Wetland.

Wetlands are one of the most threatened habitats in New Zealand (over the last 200 years 90% of NZ’s wetlands have been drained or modified).

The Waiu Wetland project consists of clearing invasive weeds (mainly blackberry and gorse), replanting native plants, and nurturing the naturally regenerating plants that have been covered by weeds.

Monthly working bees are held, usually on the third Saturday of each month between 10am and noon.

All are welcome to attend.

The final two working bees for the year will be held on 18 November and 8 December.

A Rocha is a global family of conservation organisations working together to live out God’s calling to care for creation and equip others to do likewise.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Pollination : By Wally Richards

I wrote an article on pollination and published in February this year as a number of gardeners were concerned that fruit was not setting and in particular zucchini and pumpkins and now we have a new season in front of us it would be a good time to repeat the subject.

Besides there are a lot more new subscribers to my weekly email due I think to the gardening sessions I do with Rodney Hide on Radio Reality Check through the Internet. https://realitycheck.radio/ So here we go........Most plants flower to produce seeds so their line will continue through their off-spring.

When it comes to our gardening efforts we want plants such as tomatoes, zucchini and pumpkins to produce fruit which in every case contain the seeds for the next generation of those plants.

When pollination does not happen then the fruit will only develop a little and then rot.

Pollination is the act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma.

The goal of every living organism, including plants, is to create offspring for the next generation.

One of the ways that plants can produce offspring is by making seeds.

Every year I receive enquiries about what is wrong with my zucchini/pumpkin/melon/ cucumber?

They flower and the fruit appears and then it goes yellow and rots?

The reason is that the female stigma did not receive a few grains of pollen from the male flower anther.

When it comes to the likes of pumpkins, melons and zucchini I always hand pollinate to be sure of a fruit set.

Best done in the morning where you check your plants for female flowers.

That is the flower that has the embryo fruit behind the petals.

When you find one or more then you look for a young male flower (which does not

have the embryo fruit) but has anther that is covered with pollen.

I prefer to pick the male flower and remove the petals exposing the anther.

Then I rub the anther against the stigma and thus pollinating it and setting the fruit.

Bees, bumble bees and some other flying insects may do this for you as there is a little nectar that the flowers produce to encourage the flying insects to visit and move pollen from flower to flower.

Now things dont always work as you would like them to work and sometimes a fruiting plant does not produce any flowers.

This can happen if the plant does not get enough direct sunlight, there is not sufficient energy to produce flowers.

It can also happen if the plant is well feed and well watered instead of flowering it will vegetate producing lots of new foliage minus any flowers.

I call them Fat Cats, well feed and very lazy.

It could also mean that there is a lack of potash so it pays to sprinkle some Wallys Fruit and Flower Power onto the soil at the time flowering should start.

NOTE This... any Curcubitaceae family member which is a large family that includes melons, cucumbers, zucchini and squashes you can take male pollen from say a pumpkin flower and fertilize a female zucchini flower to set the fruit.

Then we have Self-pollinating, self-fertile and self-fruitful all mean the same thing.

You can plant a self-fertile tree and expect it to pollinate itself and set fruit alone (for example, peaches, cherries, apricots).

Self-fertilization, fusion of male and female gametes (sex cells) produced by the same individual.

Self-fertilization occurs in bisexual organisms, including most flowering plants, numerous protozoans, and many invertebrates.

Tomatoes are not pollinated by bees instead it is air movement on a sunny day that will do the job.

The 2023-24 summer sporting season has just begun or is about to begin for the various sporting codes in Wainuiomata.

The “Wainuiomata News” is keen to cover the sporting successes of clubs and individuals in the valley.

With just one reporter, who also works for two other newspapers, it is not possible for us to cover most sports action in person.

However the paper’s reporter/photographer Frank Neill is keen to hear from organisations and individuals.

People can either provide write-ups and photographs to the paper, or they can contact Frank by phone or email and provide him with the information so he can put an article or articles together.

So excited to be an MP

Cushla Tangaere-Manuel is the new MP for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti, the Māori electorate that includes Wainuiomata.

Standing for the Labour Party, Cushla is significantly ahead of the sitting candidate Meka Whaitiri.

The election night figures saw Cushla on 10,804 votes, a lead of 2,860 votes over Meka.

Meka was the Labour Party’s MP for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti until she decided to waka jump and joined Te Pāti Māori earlier this year.

Of Ngāti Porou descent, Cushla is well known as both a broadcaster and as a Rugby boss.

She worked for many years at both TVNZ and Whakaata Māori, including as a reporter on “Marae”.

Cushla then made a career move from the media to sports administration.

She was the Chief Executive Officer of the East Coast Rugby Football Union and then moved to the New Zealand Rugby Union where she was the manager for Māori rugby, stepping down from that role so she could campaign for a seat in Parliament.

Her first job was in a Kohanga Reo and she has also taught Māori models of practice and health.

“I feel my varied background prepared me well for this journey,”

she says.

Cushla was watching the results come in on election night at her marae, Marae Hinepare, and was “ecstatic” at the result.

“I’m excited about being an MP,” she says.

“I was really humbled by the confidence that the people of Ikaroa-Rāwhiti have shown in me ... and in the legacy of Parekura Horomia.”

[Parekura Horomia was a Labour Party politician, who first won the Ikaroa-Rāwhiti seat in 1999 followed by winning the seat in the next four elections. Parekura was made Minister of Māori Affairs in 2000 and passed away on 29

April 2013 during his fifth term in Parliament.]

While campaigning in Wainuiomata, the korero was that the people “wanted an MP who is visible, who is committed and who will carry through.

“So that’s what I’ll be doing.

“I enjoyed campaigning in Wainuiomata.

“There is a real sense of community [in the valley].

“I really do believe in community initiatives and I saw a lot of that while I was there.

“I want to acknowledge the people of Wainuiomata who made me very welcome during the campaign and the trust that they have placed in me

and in Labour.

“I am all about being a visible, approachable MP,” Cushla says.

Charging e-bikes safely

Incorrectly charging an e-bike or e-scooter can cause a fire within seconds.

There was a fire in Australia recently caused when a person was charging their e-bike in their bedroom and it exploded,” Wainuiomata’s Chief Fire Officer Ewen Heron says.

And there was another fire from e-bike charging at a front door, which is not a good thing as it cuts off a main fire escape route.

Because of this, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) is running a safety campaign about charging e-bikes and e-scooters.

It can be accessed on the FENZ website, www.fireandemergency. nz.

“Where possible, e-bikes and e-scooters should be stored and charged outside or in a garage, shed or carport, away from living spaces,” FENZ says.

“Always charge e-scooters and e-bikes away from exits to ensure

you can safely escape in the event of a fire.

“For smaller devices, such as vapes, phones, and laptops, do not charge these under a pillow, on the bed or on a couch – they can overheat and cause a fire.”

FENZ also provides more advice on charging, including: • Do your research. Only purchase and use devices and equipment from reputable manufacturers and suppliers.

• Only use chargers and batteries supplied with the device, or certified third-party charging equipment compatible with the battery specifications (same voltage and current).

• Do not overcharge your batteries. When your item is fully charged, disconnect it from the charger.

• Never store or leave batteries or devices in areas where they can be exposed to heat or moisture.

Do not leave devices in direct sunlight or in parked vehicles where they can quickly heat up.

• Only get device repairs and battery replacements done by a qualified professional.

“If a device or battery starts to smoke or emit flames evacuate immediately and close doors (if safe) to slow the spread of fire.

“Once in a safe location, call 111 and wait for firefighters to arrive.

“Ensure no one goes back inside the building for any reason. Battery gases, vapour and smoke are highly toxic and flammable and must not be inhaled.

“If anyone has been exposed to battery fluids, debris, smoke, vapours, or flames, seek urgent medical assistance,” FENZ says.

“If a small battery or device such as a vape or phone starts overheating unplug it from the power outlet if it is charging.

“If possible, move it outside, away from any flammable material and windows or doorways.

“Small devices can be dropped into a bucket of water if this can be done safely “If your device starts to smoke

Xmas in the Nui Christmas in the Nui is back again this year.

This event will run from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 2 December at the Wainuiomata Town Centre, Queen Street.

It will feature Santa, stalls, activiities and giveaways.

Christmas in the Nui is brought to town by Kokiri Marae Health and Social Services and TiHei Rangatahi, supported

by Love Wainuiomata.

“It is going to be an epic day for our community,” Love Wainuiomata’s Co-ordinator Anaru Ryall says.

The event organisers are also looking for community organisations to provide free activities.

Patrol needs people The Wainuiomata community patrol needs people.

The patrol is in search of people with a love for Wainuiomata, people who can donate four or five hours a month, who hold a current driver’s license (although that is not essential) and who will pass a

police check.

The patrol is a small team but a passionate one, all with the same goal – to help keep Wainuiomata safe.

Cell phone distraction I see young people walking around with mobiles in their hands and walking out onto the roads not watching where they are walking.

I have seen people in groups on a park bench texting each other.

I saw a man on his mobile walk into a lamp post. He didn’t do too much harm to the lamp post.

It just shows how addictive mobiles are – only ones that are used for multiple pleasures: sports, news, games, chat.

I only use my phone for letting friends know where I am and when to go to see them.

Is New Zealand turning into [a land of] mobile zombies, just texting or playing games?

There is no communication.

I can see a new generation of people sending

kisses over the mobiles and hugs.

AI is not really a helpful application but a destructive one.

How many people will get killed crossing a road while texting? I think the Police would know by accident statistic reports.

One day you mght get a phone call from the Police saying your child has been knocked down while texting.

Just get a normal cell phone without all the temptations.

I bet that man who walked into the lamp post had a nasty headache.

Mobile Android phones have become a curse world wide.
