During the visit to the area Wainuiomata students helped map environmental and stream health to inform the protection of regional ecosystems.

The day raised awareness for Te Oranga O Te Awa, a programme that engages youth in environmental care and protection, led by the Greater Wellington Regional Council in partnership with, Environmental Protection Authority, Zealandia and Wilderlab.

Greater Wellington’s Wainuiomata/Orongorongo park ranger, Ricky Clarkson says, “The event

gave children growing up in Wainuiomata the opportunity to learn about their water supply and the ecosystem surrounding it.

“Over the course of the day, our team gave students a guided tour of water treatment facilities, explain pest control operations and taught various water monitoring techniques.

“We want to introduce kids to environmental monitoring tools so they can build an appreciation of the wildlife in their backyard and understand how we can protect native species.

“The next step is getting students involved in the programme where they will collect green data by taking eDNA samples of local ecosystems,” he says.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is

genetic material that is sourced from the environment and provides information of the comings and goings of animals and insects.

The Environmental Protection Authority’s Chief Scientist, Professor Michael Bunce says, “When animals move through their environment, they leave behind DNA. Like ‘genetic breadcrumbs’, we can use this unique DNA barcode to identify different species.

“This technology enables us to see what species are present in our environment, particularly our waterways. It helps us measure the health of a waterway.

The project is led by Greater Wellington with support from Mountains to Sea Wellington,

Enviroschools and local volunteers.

by Wainuiomata students will be processed by Wilderlab for DNA sequencing and will provide valuable long-term data of the changes in Wainuiomata’s urban stream health over time.

Today the I AM HOPE organisation announced a nationwide tour of High schools to tackle the issue of bullying in schools head on.

“Opening the conversation about being kind and showing Aroha to our friends is the objective of I AM HOPE Ambassadors Tai Tupou and Zoe Dawson as they speak to High school students and share the TR & Mack The Hopeful Black Dog story with primary school children,” the Founder of I AM HOPE and Gumboot Friday, initiatives of The Key to Life Charitable Trust Mike King says.

“As soon as we released the programme as part of I AM HOPE’s Ambassador schools tour, 26 High schools and 11 primary schools booked within two days, with more

fast coming forward in other regions, there is a clear need for a programme like this.”

By bringing books into schools, it gives children the ability to easily comprehend the message we are sharing about the causes and reasons for bullying and how this needs to change. We can teach the younger generation to show compassion and empathy toward each other, it starts with leading by example.

New for rubbish and recycling Hutt City Council has announced contracts are now in place for a modern, lower carbon kerbside rubbish and recycling service that will be rolled out to all Lower Hutt residents in July 2021.

An eight-month public tender process has concluded and contracts for rubbish and recycling services have been awarded to Waste Management NZ until 2029.

Waste Management NZ will actively work to reduce recycling contamination, meet key performance targets for customer satisfaction, conduct regular reviews to ensure services keep pace with

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry welcomed news of the contract being signed and said Council’s priority is a swift and successful rollout of the new service.

“This is a major milestone for the city and people of Lower Hutt.

Finally, we will have a fully modernised rubbish collection service, something that our people strongly supported in our consultation. The new service will be cheaper for the majority of our residents and will increase access for everyone

in our city to good quality waste collection,” Campbell says.

From 1 July next year, half the fleet will be electric and will move to become a fully electric collection service in 2024. Hutt City is one of the first councils in New Zealand to have set this new standard for the entire collection fleet. 957 tonnes of carbon emissions will be avoided each year for the 11 EV trucks that will be on the road in July 2021 equating to the annual emissions of 473 cars or flying 7,500 people from Wellington to Auckland.

There will also be a significantly reduced number of rubbish and

recycling trucks on the road as the service is centralised under one Council contract and will move to a weekly collection for rubbish and fortnightly for recycling.

Later this month rate-payers will be asked to select their bin sizes and let Council know about any accessibility requirements they have. People have until 31 January 2021 to advise Council of their choice. This is because the differently sized bins need to be ordered in time for the delivery of the new service on 1 July. If a response is not received by the due date property owners will receive the standard size bins.

New Zealand Police want your attention for Fraud Awareness Week.

Fraud Awareness Week is an opportunity for organisations and individuals to discuss the impacts of fraud and how to protect themselves.

“New Zealanders continue to lose significant amounts of money to scammers every year.

It’s an issue that not only affects people from all walks of life but takes many forms,” says Detective Superintendent Iain Chapman, National Manager, Financial Crime Group.

NZ Police’s Financial Intelligence Unit estimates New Zealanders lose $20-30 million annually to scams. In the United States, the estimated annual losses are $US650 million.

“Many people who have been scammed are too proud to make a complaint, as they may feel embarrassed or silly about getting ‘sucked in’,” Detective Superintendent Chapman says.

“As a result, a significant number of these scams are grossly under-reported.

It’s believed millions are lost each year and never reported.”

“Sadly, scammers are getting smarter and their scams are becoming more sophisticated.”

“They are preying on people’s insecurities, and in some instances, appealing to people’s desire for some ‘easy’ financial gain - for example, by promising cash for helping the scammer do something.”

“What you need to ask yourself is: ‘Is this for real? Why would you want to give me money? There must be a catch?’

Dahlia received the award at the Wellington Pasifika Business Awards 2020.

Celebrating the achievements of Pacific business and business leaders in Aotearoa, the awards shone a light on impactled businesses bettering their communities.

In a unique year, Pacific Business Trust acknowledged the hard work and sacrifice of the Pacific business community.

Businesses that have pulled through in a tough climate are well aware of how different it could have been. The awards were a poignant moment to reflect.

“We have to be seen, heard

and valued as who we are so that, together, we can succeed as Pasifika,” she said ... “We are definitely stronger together,” Dahlia says.

Other businesses recognised included PunchFit Boxing Gym, Papa’s Cakes and Hydro Health. Reserve Bank of New Zealand governor Adrian Orr, who is of Cook Islands descent, was given the Pasifika Special Recognition Beacon Award.

Another finalist for the Pasifika Rising Star award from Wainuiomata was Teru Time who runs the Time Insurance company.

The Wellington Pasifika Business Network were established in 2014 to support and grow Pasifika businesses in the Wellington Region.

The Network recognises the outstanding work and commitment of regional and local Pasifika businesses to the country’s development and economy.

A healthy picnic By: Gerald Rillstone To celebrate healthy eating and well-being Arakura School students made the most of a fine day and available resources to create a healthy picnic for the school.

During the first term of 2020 the students started studying a unit on well-being

and healthy eating and had planned to have the picnic then but Covid put paid to it and they delayed it until the final term of the year.

Teacher Katie Mcalister says included in the unit was fitness and exercise as well and putting the picnic together was something the students enjoyed.

“All the classes have tried to use food that we already had in the school because we get milk donated, cheese bread and fruit and tried to use it as much as possible,” Katie says.

There are around 150 students at the school so enough food was prepared for 200 to take into account for family members who were also invited to enjoy the food.

“We made sandwiches, bliss balls, fruit skewers and smoothies and a Weetbix slice.”

“Following on from the picnic in the afternoon we had activities like egg and spoon races,” Katie says.

Art for mental health

Part of this years Wainuiomata Art Exhibition are going online this week with a number of pieces up for auction.

A portion of the funds from the auction will go to helping the Youth Service Union which has been set up by Wainuiomata local Dallas Serj.

Of the pieces to be auctioned on Trademe there are art works from Mayor Campbell Barry, who is donating 50 percent of the proceeds to the cause, Louis Makaerahas a stunning piece in the auction with a portion of the fund going to the Youth services Union.

Dallas says the funds will be a huge help for getting progress on mental issues for youth.

He says the YSU is a collective of 16 different schools from the Wellington region and their main focus is raising awareness of the current problem and putting forward a bill to help solve it.

“We don’t feel the government is addressing the issue of mental health in schools and the fact that there is a lack of understanding of mental health, the causes and

consequences and there is a stigma in New Zealand that we are not allowed to talk about it.”

The group is in the process of submitting a bill to government asking them to incorporate more money into getting mental health teaching in schools so the fence can be put at the top of the cliff instead of more ambulances at the bottom.

Celebrating Diwali

Wainuiomata’s Hub fifteen days of Diwali finished over the weekend with a flourish of dance and sweets.

Organiser of the event Aasha Surrey says this is the first year the Hub has held the celebration over 15 days.

She says the event was spread out over 15 days because the available staff were keen to put time into the event.

“There were things we couldn’t do because of Covid, we wanted to try on a Sari and a Bollywood session where people could learn some of the dance moves so next year hopefully we will have more dance,” she says.

She says one of the most popular events held was the

henna tattoo’s.

“It was really, really popular with teenage girls who were at first hesitant because they didn’t know what it was and when they saw it they were into it right away,” Aasha says.

“A lot of things came from the Indian community, sweet to share and they offered to do the chalk Rangoli and they really got into it.”

The feed back from the Indian community in Wainuiomata was they thought it was an amazing thing to have the opportunity to present their culture in the Library.

“A lot of minds came together to create the celebration and we hope to use it as a template for next year,” Celebrating Diwali with sweets Dakota Perenise-Auinn and Tayah Aasha says.

Raised gardens: By Wally Richards

There is nothing better than a raised garden that is about 60-80cm tall which means no bending to work it.

Raised gardens are best for growing vegetables in; not flowers or shrubs.

Tall growing vegetables such as tomatoes and corn are best grown in open ground or in low raised gardens as you don’t want to have to use a step ladder to harvest.

I had this week emails and phone calls from a gardener who has spent several thousand dollars to build a raised garden out of macrocarpa wood and fill it with organic compost. A good choice of wood as macrocarpa will last for a long time without been tanalised.

Tanalised timber has some heavy duty chemicals which are not nice for leaching into the surrounding soil and then into your vegetables. Wood is an insulator so you lose a big advantage of warming the growing medium when compared to using roofing iron.

I was sent a couple of pictures and this lady’s raised garden which is in a U shape with a walk path in the middle of the U to be able to attend to the vegetables all around with ease except it was only about 30-50 cm tall so a bit of bending still.

Another reason for having a raised garden about waist high is that there is less chance of weed seeds being blown onto the garden. The concern she had was that there is bore for water and having had the water analysed wanted to know if there was any problems using that water. The only thing was the iron content and that it would tend to acidify the soil over time which would affect most vegetable that prefer an alkaline pH. The simple answer is to use regularly some soft garden lime such as Wallys Calcium and Health. But I noticed in the photo that there were a couple of

shrubs growing near the structure.

Shrubs, vines and trees anywhere near a raised garden that is full of lovely rich compost is no good.

I learnt this the hard way a few years ago when I built a raised garden out of roofing iron with 100 x 100 fencing posts at each corner. The structure sat on the ground and about a metre or so away on a fence I had a cocktail Kiwi-Fruit growing.

The first season I had a great garden of vegetables that grew so fast it was hard to keep up with them. The following season the vegetables started off good then stopped and didn’t grow.

It took a few minutes to find out why when I dug down into the growing medium. About 6cm down I struck a mat of fibrous roots, so dense that I had problems cutting through them. Where did this mat come from? My cocktail Kiwi fruit which had grown enormous with masses of vine vegetation but lacking in flowers and fruit. Its roots likely through the Mycorrhizal Fungi association in the soil, realised there was a metre high source of the best plant growth food nearby and spread its roots out to it. Then up into the raised garden with a maze of feeder roots.

After that experience I have only placed my raised gardens onto concrete or poured a concrete pad to sit them on.

I explained this to the lady that the lovely raised garden she had spent so much on would more than likely be history within a year or so.

To dig out the compost and pour a concrete pad would be a lot of trouble so I suggested on the sides where root invasion could happen is to dig a trench about 50cm deep and about 10cm wide and fill that with concrete. It would also make a mowing strip around the garden which was surrounded by lawn.

another happy gardener.

A simple and the best raised garden is made out of roofing iron 1800 x 634 (3 sheets one cut in half for the ends).

Two 1200 long 100 x 100 tanalised posts cut in half and given two coats of acrylic paint all over. That’s to seal in the chemicals. You lay one sheet of 1800 iron on the ground with one 600 post at each end. You drill and screw roofing screws through the iron to fix it to the two posts. Repeat on other 1800 iron. Now you have the two sides which you stand up on a concrete pad and the half iron (900 length) will be drilled and screwed to the ends. All screwed up you have a raised garden 634 tall and 1800 x 900. One side of the 1800 should if possible be facing north.

Now treat this like a big compost bin and throw in all your organic material, prunings, grass clippings, sawdust untreated, newspaper, compost, kitchen scraps etc. You are looking to fill to about two thirds with any material going. Then over this you can place cardboard or newspapers and then a layer of purchased good compost. This should make it about 30cm from the top edge. Sprinkle the likes of blood & Bone, sheep pellets, chicken manure, Ocean Solids, Unlocking you Soil and some BioPhos. I have no faith in Foster as a head coach because he has no history of success in the role.

A good second in command he may be, but not even the biggest Waikato fan must say these early signs are not good at all.

The past two weeks have been poor and there’s no adjustments being made.

Reiko Ioane needs to be dropped, Codie Taylor has the yips with his line

out throwing and I don’t think Shannon Frizzell was mentally on the field.

A back-row combination of Ardie Savea, Sam Cane and Hoskins Sotutu may have some value.

The whole backline has lost its spark for whatever reason.

Jack Goodhue looks like a shell of himself this year while Jordie Barrett just does not look up to it.

Ian Foster is on borrowed time.

Yearbury claims series title

By Andy McGechan This year’s edition of the New Zealand Extreme Off-Road Championship series went down to the wire in Canterbury at the weekend.

And when the dust finally settled on the Yamaha-sponsored series, it was Cambridge’s Dylan Yearbury who had emerged as winner in the elite Gold Grade, eventually edging out Wainuiomata’s Jake Whitaker by the narrowest of margins, a solitary point.

Third overall was Helensville’s Tom Buxton.

Whitaker had led the series from the opening round near Wellington in September, but Yearbury was simply too sharp at the rounds that followed and had soon reduced the margin to just a handful of points as the riders headed down to the South Island’s sole event, the double-header fourth and final round near Christchurch on Saturday and Sunday.

The four-round series came down to the final throw of the dice and, when Yearbury won outright at both Saturday’s enduro sprint prologue and Sunday’s Nut Buster hard enduro, the series crown was his.

An injury had forced Yearbury to

skip round one of the series at Wellington, but he won both the following two events, in Whangamata, also in September, and then in Hawke’s Bay two weeks ago.

With only three of the four rounds of the championship to be counted and riders to discard their one worst score from the three North Island rounds, it was always going to be a tight affair.

Motorcycling New Zealand enduro commissioner Justin Stevenson said it had been a “brilliant weekend”, with Saturday’s new sprint enduro format very popular with the riders and spectators alike.

“I think this is a format that we’d like to keep for next year too.” he said.

“There were four separate races over the eight-kilometre course and it was similar to a rally sprint, with riders set off on the course at 15-second intervals, their accumulated times after the four races to determine final positions.”

Riders had nominated themselves as either Gold, Silver or Bronze Grade competitors, depending upon their skill and fitness levels, with the grades each scored separately.

Wil Yeoman continued to dominate as he had almost from the start of the series, easily winning the series ahead of Canterbury brothers Cody and Luke Corson respectively.

Whangamata’s Ethan Jameson, New Plymouth’s Sam Parker and Rerewhakaaitu’s Zach Sefuiva respectively took the top three spots in the Bronze Grade.

“It was great to see such a close finish in the Gold Grade. It just shows that anyone could have won it, but the top riders really were in a

class all of their own.

“We can see some young riders coming through and no doubt a few of the Silver Grade riders will step up to the Gold Grade next season. The sport is in a healthy state and I was happy to see more than 140 riders entered for the final round of the series. Those are pretty good numbers at this level of competition.”
