Wainui’s new knight

Wainuiomata has a new knight, Sir Trevor Mallard, who was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2024 New Years Honours.

The honour, Sir Trevor says, has come thanks to the work of Wainuiomata people he has worked with.

Honour reflects work of superb teams Continued from page 1 “To be made a knight is an honour for me but really it reflects the work of several superb teams I have had around me in Wainuiomata, in the Labour Party and in Parliament over the last 40 years,” he says.

Currently New Zealand’s Ambassador to Ireland, Sir Trevor was awarded his knighthood for services as a Member of Parliament and as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He was Speaker from 2017 until 2022, when he retired from service as a Parliamentarian.

Although being Parliament’s Speaker is a very important role, “probably the most important job I have had is that of Minister of Education and in that the progress we made moving from child minding to quality early childhood education means the most to me,” Sir Trevor says.

“Being involved in the bid for the 2011 Rugby World Cup and helping put together the funding for our Americas’ Cup bids were also worthwhile.

“Both of those showed that while we only have five million people we can beat the world.

“But just as memorable have been the interactions I have had with generations of people from Wainuiomata on the school visits, at the marae or sportsgrounds or just shopping at the mall or Woolworths in recent years.

“I love it that people can stop me anywhere to chat about things big and small.”

When asked who had made con-

tributions to his career, Sir Trevor said: “I was lucky to spend time with some of Wainuiomata’s pioneers, Harry Martin (our only Mayor) Keith Eddy (who was very active in the Rugby Club local body matters) and his wife Ora who had a role in many women’s groups and, of course, Fraser Colman who was our local MP for many years and showed me how to be a good local MP and build a strong local organisation.

“Ken Laban has been extremely supportive throughout my career.

“Our parents played in the same interclub tennis team in the early 1960s and Ken’s family has led initiatives that have resulted in very successful sporting and leadership programmes.

“Wainuiomata is blessed with a new generation of very talented leaders” including Hutt City Mayor Campbell Barry, Keri Brown and Josh Briggs at Council level, Anaru Ryall and Alice Soper in the community but “even more importantly dozens of volunteers that keep vital clubs and organisations going.

“Wainuiomata is a special place.

Coming over the hill always makes it feel like home. There is nowhere else like it,” Sir Trevor says.

Among the other honours Sir Trevor has received he was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal.

In 1999, he was appointed to Cabinet and became the Minister of Education, Minister of State Services and Minister for Sport and Recreation.

He also held a number of other Ministerial portfolios from 1999 to 2008, including Minister of Labour, Industry and Regional Development, Broadcasting, America’s Cup, Environment, Energy, Co-ordinating Race Relations, as well as the Minister for the Rugby World Cup.

He was an Assistant Speaker from 2014 to 2017.

Outside of chairing the Business, Standing Orders and Officers of Parliament Select Committees, and the Parliamentary Service Commission in his role as Speaker, he has been a member of the Education and Science, Government Administration, Finance and Expenditure, Statutes Revision and Justice and Law Reform Select Committees.

Sir Trevor retired from politics in 2022 after serving 35 years as a Member of Parliament.

It’s been a tough year – highlight has been the unconditional love of my partner and family.

Attending the veterans’ ANZAC parade in the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Moving from Auckland.

Anything that involved quality time with family.

Getting through the cost of living I guess but overall having great support from family.

I lost my Mum earlier in the year so the highlight is appreciating the little things, perspective, living.

David needs new lungs

Wainuiomata resident David Donohue needs new lungs.

David was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when he was a baby and this led to a double lung transplant in 2019.

After three good years, things took a turn for the worse last year, leading to an acute rejection of his donor lungs.

To help David’s family with all the costs associated with David’s health situation, his partner Candace Parrant, has set up a Givealittle page. The page can be found by typing “David needs new lungs” into Google.

“David underwent an emergency double lung transplant in 2019 when his health was at his lowest,” the Givealittle page says.

“He had three amazing years, even worked as a courier driver delivering your packages.

“He was on top of the world, being well and able.”

Things took a turn for the worse last year, however, “when he started feeling short of breath – a feeling he hadn’t felt for almost

three years.

“A few weeks passed and his health declined, with our first trip this year to Auckland Hospital.

David was diagnosed with a lung infection.

“They tried treating the infection but it was unsuccessful and lead to acute rejection of his donor lungs.

“Back to hospital for planned infusions/ transfusions of the antibodies causing the rejection.

“Seven days into treatment he suffered a serious setback. He contracted sepsis which quickly turned into septic shock.

“We went from having a plan, to saying our goodbyes.

“With such a low survival rate, we were told to prepare ourselves.

“To all the family’s surprise David’s stats improved.

“Hope for survival slowly crept in. Spending 50 days in hospital, learning to walk and eat again.

Busy year for Fire Brigade

Last year was a very busy one for the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The brigade attended 329 calls, the largest number it has received for many years. Most years the brigade responds to around 250 calls.

A major reason for the high number of calls was an incredibly busy day when high winds damaged scores of properties in the valley

on Sunday 17 September.

This resulted in the brigade attending 60 calls in just eight hours.

“To our members, many thanks to you all for the commitment you give each and every day to the brigade and the Wainuiomata community,” the brigade says.

“To the partners and families of our members, thank you so much for the support you give to us, the dinners, birthdays, holidays that have been interrupted by the sound

of the siren.

“You are all an important part of our wider brigade family.

“To the Wainuiomata community, thank you for the support that you have given us during the year.

“The heartfelt comments that were made, the love that was shown when we lost one of our own in August were very touching and your support helped our brigade through a very difficult time.”

The brigade also thanks the volun-

teers and career staff from the Hutt Valley and Wellington who have assisted the brigade during 2023.

“We hope for a less busy 2024, but rest assured that we will be there for you every day, doing what we love to do, helping our community in your time of need,” the brigade says.

Christmas day saw the brigade called to what proved not to be a threat.

Initially the brigade was dis-

patched to what was thought to be a house fire. On arrival, however, they discovered that the fire had been lit to put down a hāngĪ.

The call came despite the fact that the brigade posted on its Facebook page on 21 December, asking people to let their communications centre know if they were lighting a fire for a hāngĪ or umu so the brigade would know in the event somebody saw the smoke and made a 111 call.

Farewell 2023 – Welcome 2024 MAY Wainuiomata had plenty to celebrate during 2023, including the opening of the refurbished town centre in Queen Street, the biggest and best Matariki celebration, a series of young sports people representing their country, two houses saved from burning down by the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade, the

unveiling of the long awaited Welcome to Wainuiomata sign, Contemporary Korowai Designs being named the region’s top small business and a hugely successful Christmas in the Nui. Among the highlights of 2023 were the following:

January Melony O’Connor (Ngāti Porou) was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in this year’s New Year’s Honours. Melony received her award for services to basketball, and particularly for her role as a referee. She has refereed the sport for 40 years, the last 20 years in the Men’s National Basketball League (NBL).Dayle Jackson, who began her teaching career at Glendale School was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in this year’s New Year’s Honours. She was awarded the accolade for services to education and sport. After training at Wellington Teacher’s College, Ms Jackson taught at Glendale School for two years in the 1960s and most of her teaching career following that was as a primary school Principal. She was Manager of the Black Sticks women’s hockey team at the 2000 Olympic Games during her career with Hockey New Zealand as a player, coach and various other roles.

She was alse awarded Bowls New Zealand Umpire of the Year in 2021, served four terms as President of Bowls Wellington and

Led by Te Āti Awa Tarankai Whānui, the blessing and celebration of the significantly enhanced Queen Street and its surrounds also involved members of the Wainuiomata Marae. A special moment came near the end of the karakia when Te Arahura Pounamu, gifted by the Wainuiomata Marae, was placed into the ground between the Wainuiomata Community Centre and Queen Street and Kaihirangi Moehu spoke on behalf of the Marae.

The Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade saved a house from burning down early on Saturday 14 January. The brigade was called just after the house caught alight, and the Wainuiomata fire fighters moved quickly to extinguish the flames after they created only a small amount of damage.

FEBRUARY Both the Wainuiomata Cricket Club and the Wainuiomata Tennis Club celebrated their 75th anniversaries.

The Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade was involved in its second great save of the year on 27 February. The brigade saved a house from burning down from a fire that began when the partner of the home owner’s daughter was

working on a car parked just a metre away from the house. He was drilling into one of the panels but unknown to him the car had been modified and he drilled into the petrol line and a stray spark ignited the fuel. The brigade was quickly on the scene and rapidly extinguised the blaze, which had not only threatened the house but also did about $200 worth of damage to the house’s paintwork.

MARCH The Wainuiomata Intermediate School’s Student Council raised $1,000 for the Napier Mayoral Fund supporting vicitms of Cyclone Gabrielle. They presented the money they had raised to Mayor Campbell Barry on 10 March.

The Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club held the grand opening of its clubroom amenities upgrade on 16 March. Rugby greats Ruby Tui and Ian Jones cut the ribbon to mark the formal opening, following a powhiri and speeches. The upgrade was designed and implemented to help cater for women’s Rugby. Before the upgrade there was no separation for men and women in either the showers or the toilet. Following the upgrade, there is now a partition between the men’s and the women’s shower areas and shower curtains have been installed. There are also separate toilets for men and women.

Shane Richardson wins 600 TT title

Wainuiomata motorcyclist Shane Richardson had stunning day during the final round of the 2023 Suzuki International Series on Boxing Day. Competing with the KMD Racing Team, Shane won both his races to become the 2023 Formula Two/Supersport 600 class TT title winner.

Not only that but Shane became the first person on a Formula Two/600 bike to break into the 48 second club on Whanganui’s Cemetery Circuit.

In doing so Shane joined a very small club of riders to run a 48 second lap time on the circuit.

He achieved this when he clocked a lap of 48.520 seconds during the Robert Holden Memorial race.

Shane finished third in the Robert Holden event, which also featured riders from the premier Formula One/Superbikes class.

The race was won by Whakatane’s Mitch Rees, who also won the Superbikes series, while Tony Rees finished second.

Shane’s two Boxing Day victories in the Formula Two/Supersport 600 series saw him win ahead of Upper Hutt’s Rogan Chandler.

Earlier in the meeting Shane set a new Formula Two/600 Supersport lap record on 49.095 seconds around the Cemetery Circuit.

Before claiming the two victories on Boxing Day, Shane was lying fourth in the Formula Two/600 title race following the first two rounds in Taupo and Manfield earlier in December.

Cricketers’ two good victories

Wainuiomata’s two top cricket teams both came away with very good victories on 13 January.

The first XI defeated Naenae Old Boys by 33 runs at Bryan Heath Park.

Playing in the second tier Hazlett Trophy competition Wainuiomata reached a very competitive total of 282 for the loss of six wickets.

They then contained Naenae Old Boys who finished the match

with 240 runs for the loss of nine wickets.

Ben Coddington starred with the bat for Wainuiomata, scoring a century. He was finally dismissed on 106 from 128 deliveries.

Craig Foster also played outstandingly, scoring 81 from the 100 deliveries he faced and taking three catches when fielding.

Ryan Jackson was also in the runs and the catches, scoring 28 from 32 balls and taking two catches.

Callum Mackaness bowled out-

standingly for Wainuiomata, taking three wickets at a cost of just 38 runs from his 10 overs.

Brett Dransfield also bowled very well, taking two wickets for 47 runs.

Wainuiomata’s second XI claimed a very comfortable victory over the Stokes Valley Ashes at Delaney Park.

Batting first the home team was all out for 76.

SEPTEMBER Wainuiomata Footballer Brooke Neary was selected to represent New Zealand in her chosen sport. The 15-year-old was been named in the New Zealand team that will compete in the 2023 Oceania Under-16 Women’s Football Championship, held in Tahiti from 13 to 30 September.

Three young Wainuiomata softballers from the same family were selected to represent New Zealand. Georja Keal, aged 14, was been selected in Softball New Zealand’s Under 15 Women’s World Cup team.

Flynn, who is 16, was selected in a Softball New Zealand Development Team that is competing in the Under 18 Queensland State Championships. His younger brother, 15-year-old Connor, made an International Softball Academy New Zealand Under 15 Softball Team competing in the Under 15 Blue Blaze Tournament in Sydney.

OCTOBER Wainuiomata’s new welcome sign was officially revealed and blessed on Saturday 7 October. Some eight years after the project was begun, the new sign is now there for all who travel down the hill road to see.

The karakia and blessing was led by the Wainuiomata Marae and local kaumātua.

Tanuj Ahuja bowled outstandingly, taking three wickets and conceding only 28 runs from his seven overs.

Captain Scott Babot also shone with the ball, taking two wickets and conceding just six runs from his 3 overs and three balls.

With the win Wainuiomata retained its second placing on the Wellington division six table.

Wainuiomata’ first XI did not

have such a good day at Bryan Heath Park on 6 January.

Batting first they reached 196 for the loss of seven wickets. Ben Coddington top scored with 76 for the home team while Craig Foster scored 42.

Upper Hutt United overtook Wainuiomata, reaching 197 for the loss of just four wickets.

Logan Stroup took two of the wickets to fall.

Wainuiomata’s second XI had a bye on 6 January.

OCTOBER Continues Wainuiomata’s Zack Furniss is a New Zealand motorcycle trials champion. Zack won the Clubman grade at the New Zealand Trials Championship over Labour weekend.

In taking out the victory Zack defeated the three times title holder Gavin Fox from the South Island. Not only did he take out the overall victory, Zack also won all of the three

days competition in the Clubman grade.

The Wainuiomata Football Club’s Ryan Imray and Leanne Smith picked up three awards at the 2023 Capital Football awards ceremony, held at the Petone Workingmen's Club on 27 October. Ryan won the award as club volunteer of the year and also the Photomac Photographer of the Year award.

Leanne won the club service award.

NOVEMBER Wainuiomata business Contemporary Korowai Designs is the top small business in the Wellington region. It won the award as top small business at the Wellington Region Business Excellence Awards

held at the Lower Hutt Events Centre on 17 November. Winning the award was “awesome. It was absolutely amazing,” Contemporary Korowai Designs owner Brenda Janes told the “Wainuiomata News”.

DECEMBER More than 5,000 people attend the hugely successful Christmas in the Nui celebration on 2 December. The biggest Christmas event Wainuiomata has ever held, Christmas in the Nui “was an absolutely fantastic day,” says one of the event organisers Linda Olsen of the Wainuiomata Marae. The Christmas celebration was organised by both the Wainuiomata Marae and Kōkiri Marae with support from Love Wainuiomata. In addition to the entertainment, the stalls, educative presentations and the food Santa also attended, with Santa’s Grotto being stationed in the Wainuiomata Cxommunity Hub. Roya Sultani from Wainuiomata High School was presented with the Lower Hutt Manukura Award on 5 December. The Manukura Award recognises and celebrates outstanding voluntary service in the community from high school students. The awards were presented by Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry.

Recognised for Wainuiomata service

Two people whose community service has included initiatives in Wainuiomata were recognised in this year’s New Years Honours.

Mary-Jane Rivers, who lives in Te Horo, was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to community-lead development, governance and education.

In 2022 Ms Rivers was a founding Trustee of He Puāwai with Kokiri Marae.

He Puāwai Trust was established to build resilience in whenua, whānau and hāpori through restoring and developing sustainable local food systems.

Based in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai (Lower Hutt), the trust’s mahi is all about shifting the dial from kai crisis to resilience.

It does this by providing opportunities for education and development in kai skills and by shaping community kai hubs alongside partnering food banks and local organisations.

In Wainuiomata the trust plays a supporting role to Kokiri Marae and, in particular, their Pataka Kai. The focus is on the full conversion of their māea into a highly productive Maara Ora that will ensure a continuous supply of fresh vegetables to the pataka.

The initiative also provides weekly workshos and learning opportunities for whānau, plots for those who cannot have gardens at their homes and the new community kitchen that can provide both education and meals for those who cannot cook for themselves.

Ms Rivers has been a leader and innovator across several fields in her career and voluntary work, through her local

communities, senior public sector roles, adult and community education, community-led development, and international development.

This has included establishing the first women’s refuge in the North Island.

She was the first policy director in the Ministry for Women, and first CEO of Citizens Advice Bureau, before consulting on social and organisational development.

She founded Inspiring Communities in 2006, leading its creation until 2011 before serving on the Board.

The organisation has been significant in demonstrating the value and impact of locally-led development, including responses to complex issues such as equity, climate change and economic development.

She has been involved with multiple aspects of adult and community education since the 1990s and has chaired REAP Aotearoa since 2015.
