New native nursery By: Gerald Rillstone

Wellington and Lower Hutt Forest and Bird, are establishing a community native plant nursery at the Recreation Area of the Greater Wellington Regional Council park in Wainuiomata.

The nursery will be growing and nurturing natives to be planted at the Recreation Area, Baring Head and for creek vegetation as well as general tree plantings around the Wellington region.

Seedlings for everyone Continued from page 1 Planting volunteer and Wainuiomata local Gary James has been part of volunteer planting teams all around the region for the last 40 years and says the new nursery will make a huge difference.

Their current nursery is in Highbury and is on a year by year lease and was originally set up to grow natives for Zealandia and has gone on to supply plants for plantings throughout the Wellington region.

Wainuiomata,Orongarongo Parks Ranger Ricky Clarkson heard about the tenuous lease and offered some space within the park for a permanent home for a second nursery.

“We had a look at it and it is perfect for a satellite nursery which was what we always intended to do and it is flat and vehicle access is great,” Gary says.

“We can do a hundred and ten different species and we don’t charge for them but we do take a koha,” he says.

T he new nurser y will provide plants for Wainuiomata plantings, Baring Head, Manor Park and pretty

much anywhere else they are needed.

They have a permit for a shade house of 14.5 meters by 9 meters and should be able to accommodate 15,000 plants each season.

Ricky says the piece of land they are putting the shade house on was previously used as storage.

“Most of the stuff that was stored there has been moved out. It was all Wellington Water pipeline stuff, among them some historic pipes,” Ricky says.

The area was also surrounded in blackberry and he has pretty much cleared the weed and the surrounding area will be planted out also.

“In our parks network plan there is a goal to restore it and we will be planting it out over time and putting a track in also,” he says.

The long term aim is to provide enough plants for plantings in Wainuiomata and plants for people to restore their own private wetland.

“Its about getting nature going and being a capitalist for providing the correct species locally sourced,” Gary says. Wainuiomata Park, an ideal spot for the nursery.

Roundabout solution in the making

By: Gerald Rillstone A make over of Wainuiomata’s Main Road roundabout is being planned after several complaints of motorist taking short cuts across the middle of it.

Community board member Jodie Winterburn has taken up the issue and is working with various agencies to find a solution.

“Approximately two months ago some members of the Wainuiomata community brought to my attention that there are some reckless drivers that drive across the roundabout and sometimes do “donuts” there. I also saw on social media that members of the

community were discussing this and also raised concerns about safety of other drivers using the roundabout correctly, it was also mentioned the birds that sometimes sit there are at risk of being run over.,” Jodie says.

Jodie approached the Hutt City Council and has met with council officers onsite to discuss ways to deter drivers from driving over the roundabout to ensure driver safety.

“Some people had raised suggestions about how to do this, some gave ideas of how to make it look visually appealing also.

The officers were very receptive to concerns, suggestions and ideas from the community.

From this initial meeting with them, they are looking closely at what can be possible to deter future reckless driving in the way of possible planting of trees, rocks, shrubs and or a sculpture, as suggested by the community.

“But due to the major underground services that run through the roundabout, precise mapping, planning and consideration needs to be undertaken before any commitment can be made to this project. We also need to ensure we aren’t encouraging nesting of birds at the roundabout,” Jodie says.

The council officers are undertaking further investigation.

In the meantime she says it

was suggested to engage further with the community, to ask how they feel about certain plants and flowers, and to consider particular species that used to be all around the Wainuiomata Valley.

“This topic has generated a lot of ongoing interest, opinions and suggestions. I was also contacted

by Mt Grace nursery in Moores Valley to offer their advice and expertise once it is established if this project is viable and I have also consulted with representatives from Natural Heritage Trust and Forest and Bird,” Jodie says.

The time frame for get the project underway will be dictated by cost, planning and overall viability.

The Māori Language Commission has paid tribute to more than one million New Zealanders who made history by coming together across the country and the world to celebrate te reo Māori at the same time today.

“This is the largest, single celebration of te reo Māori in history. We have never had this many people celebrating our language together at the same time,” said Māori Language Commissioner, Professor Rawinia Higgins.

“We would like to pay tribute to those across Aotearoa and the world, our smallest towns to our largest cities, our elderly to our babies who joined us today.”

The commission’s Māori Language Moment marked the day and hour when a small group of language champions presented the Māori Language Petition to parliament in 1972. The sign-up website saw more than 500,000 people join in the last three days. The last hour before 12pm saw the commission’s websites and online Zuimano struggle to cope.

Mine is the Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. It’s really interesting and exciting fantasy writing.

I really love the Percy Jackson Series. It has a lot of excitment and adventure and shows an ordinary boy can do magnificent things if he puts his mind to it.

If I had to choose one it would probaly have to be Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles. It is very exciting and there are a lot of unexpected things happening.

The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Geimenhart. It was very good and showed you couldn’t run away from the past.

Hetty Feather by Jacquelin Wilson. It is a very realistic story and very empathetic.

Mine is the Artemis Fowl Series by Eion Colfer. It’s about a family of criminals and I loved the adventure in it.

Local Author making a difference By: Gerald Rillstone Author and teacher Dahlia Malaeulu found from her own experience teaching there was a void when it came to resources for teaching Pasifika students about who they were and what their culture is about.

Dahlia took it upon herself to do something about it which set her on a path to becoming an author. She has produced three books already which are being used as resources and a fourth is finished and will be launched later in the year.

“I accidentally became this author,” she says.

“The books that grabbed me when I was younger were the ones that reflected me and my culture and helped me to understand the world and that’s what I feel stories should be about. They are such a

powerful tool,” The first book she fell in love with had a cover featuring two boys, primary aged sitting on a bench. They were Maori because they looked like some of the Maori friends she had grown up with and the author’s name was definitely Maori.

“I remember sounding it out, ‘Wi-ti … Ihi-mae-ra’. It was called, The New Net Goes Fishing.”

“Then I started to read the stories inside. My eyes widened. Connections fired off in my brain. The New Net had gone Fishing and it had caught me,” she says.

“It was mind blowing to me that there were books that actually had values that were similar even though I am Samoan of family and whanau and our cultures are quite similar even the language,” Dahlia says.

She is on a path to sharing the voice

of Pasifika and the power of books is part of being seen, heard and valued so they can be proud in who they are.

She says mental health research has shown that knowing your culture and yourself goes a long way to wellbeing for all cultures.

“I found just being the teacher I was not able to find books for my children that reflected them and on that journey I created the Mila’s My Gagana Series that have the language integrated because a lot of our children are struggling with the language,” Dahlia says.

Her next book has Teine Samoa which means Samoan girl and has 14 contributing authors with eight of them coming from Wainuiomata and six of them still living in the valley.

It is due to be released in October if Covid will let it happen.

Queen street plan next stage Love Wainuiomata are excited to be moving forward with the next stages of the Queen St Plan. Lots has been done already including tables and benches, flags, fairy garden, Queen St sign, basketball hoop and kiwi mural, swings, planters, and the BBQ-Kai zone on the Reserve.

We’re excited to share and work with the community on what’s next says Esther King, Love Wainuiomata “We’d love to hear everyone’s ideas so please check out our Facebook and the display we have in the Library foyer for the next few weeks. We’ll also be do-

ing other engagements in the community and would love to talk with individuals, whanau, clubs, groups businesses etc about what’s happening. The great thing about these Queen St projects is they’re all about our community getting greater ownership and use of our town centre.”

These next stages will see Love Wainuiomata mostly focused on the Activity Zone in the Reserve area and the Welcome Zone by the entrance to Queen St and the Library.

Projects include a volleyball net, slackline, fitness equipment, ground mural, plantings,

and art elements.

Esther says “We’re focused on projects that encourage people to visit more often and stay longer. This means trialling a wide range of projects so there’s something for everyone. We really encourage all our community including individuals, groups, schools, churches and businesses to get involved. Kids get helping hand managing life’s challenges A programme aimed at equipping school children with tools to navigate life’s ups and downs will soon be available free of charge to any primary or intermediate school in New Zealand.

Southern Cross, New Zealand’s leading independent health and wellness provider, has joined forces with the Pause Breathe Smile Trust and the Mental Health Foundation.

As a result, the nation’s own locally designed and internationally recognised schools’ mindfulness programme is being scaled up and will be open to all school children aged five to 12 from October.

Developed at the Mental Health Foundation, the Pause Breathe Smile programme was launched in 2013 and has reached around 380 schools and more than 65,000 children to date.

Research shows that Pause Breathe Smile increases wellbeing, reduces stress, boosts conflict resolution skills and enhances selfawareness.

Southern Cross Chair Greg Gent said teaming up with Pause Breathe Smile was an opportunity to help build a healthier future for New Zealand children.

“This programme equips children with the essential skills they need to help them navigate the ups and downs of everyday life.

“Southern Cross has been looking for a way to make a tangible difference for New Zealand’s children for some time. We’re committed to helping to build a healthier future for all New Zealanders.”

The programme’s preventive approach and proven results made it an obvious choice, Gent said.

“Our not-for-profit ethos and focus on health and wellbeing mean Pause Breathe Smile is a great fit with Southern Cross.”

Research by Southern Cross** has found that 55 per cent of New Zealand parents are concerned about their children’s ability to cope with everyday life.

The Director of Mindfulness Training and Development for Pause Breathe Smile, Grant Rix, said the programme could now help

thousands more children to build positive mind health.

“With Southern Cross on board, Pause Breathe Smile will be freely available to all primary and intermediate schools in New Zealand.

“That has been a long-term aspiration and to have Southern Cross helping to make a difference on such a large scale is incredible.”

Psychologist and parenting expert Nigel Latta said the wider availability of the Pause Breathe Smile programme was something he had been advocating for years.

“It’s never been more important for our young people to learn self-regulation skills, and so this is the perfect initiative at a really crucial time.

The skills kids learn in this programme will benefit them for their entire lives.

“This isn’t just about how to deal with stress and anxiety, it’s teaching young people profoundly important life skills.”

The Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation, Shaun Robinson, said the Foundation had decades of experience working for mental wellbeing in schools.

“Pause Breathe Smile is a key success arising from that mahi. We know from research that it creates fantastic outcomes for children and teachers and we are proud to work with Southern Cross and the Pause Breathe Smile Trust to make it available throughout Aotearoa.”

Pause Breathe Smile provides professional learning and development for teachers who deliver the programme in their classrooms and incorporate its practices into their teaching.

Be safe in the great outdoors this Spring As the weather warms up, Police are reminding trampers to help keep themselves safe in the great outdoors.

“Winter and COVID-19 have kept a lot of us indoors for months on end but, with spring in the air, trampers and other outdoor enthusiasts are getting back into it,” Wellington Search and Rescue Coordinator Acting Sergeant Luke Taunton says.

Search and Rescue teams from Kapiti and Upper Hutt last Thursday completed their first operation of the season after two women became lost while walking the Titi Circular Track in Akatarawa Forest.

The pair texted family to say they had lost their way shortly after 5pm, just as it was getting dark.

Police were notified a short time later and two Search and Rescue teams in 4x4s were deployed to the area.

“The women did lots of things right, they were well prepared for a day walk with warm clothing, food and emergency fire lighting equipment, but the overnight temperature for nearby Upper Hutt was expected to be -3degC,” Acting Sergeant Taunton says.

“Thankfully, we knew from the

women’s text that they were somewhere near a sign that said “Rock Garden” so we were able to locate them reasonably quickly.

“They were safe and well and extremely happy to be reunited with their loved ones about 9pm.

“While this was the best possible outcome, we urge anyone going into the bush for any length of time to hope for the best but always prepare for the worst.

“That means planning your route, checking the weather, seeking local knowledge if you’re unfamiliar with the terrain, and telling someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.

“It’s also vital that you take the right supplies – clothing for changeable conditions, food, an appropriate form of communication, and GPS or offline maps.

“Offline or paper maps are particularly important in places that aren’t clearly signposted or have poor cell coverage, and it’s also worth considering a personal locator beacon, which can tell rescuers exactly where you are.

“A bit of preparation beforehand may just save your life.”

Doctors, nurses get behind free EpiPen initiative Health professionals gave a huge thumbs up to Allergy New Zealand’s recent free EpiPen® campaign, according to the organisation’s Chief Executive Mark Dixon.

FundaPen™, which has recently ended with nearly 3,000 New Zealanders at risk of anaphylaxis receiving a free EpiPen, was wholeheartedly supported by prescribers including General Practitioners and Nurse Specialists.

“Not one health professional we approached asked why they should support this initiative,” Dixon said. “They all asked ‘how’ they could support it. That ‘can-do’ attitude was critical and really demonstrated to us the overwhelming support for Epipens to be funded like any other essential medicine.”

Lifesaving EpiPen® (adrenaline autoinjector pens), which last only 12 – 18 months, are not currently funded by Pharmac and can cost between $120 and $350 each. Through the FundaPen™ campaign, which was made possible through a $300,000 Pub Charity donation, Allergy New Zealand was able to reach people who are least able to afford this lifesaving medicine. A total of 2,875 EpiPen®(adrenaline autoin-

jector pens), were distributed between November 2019 and July 2020.

“We have received so much support for FundaPen™ from prescribers and the allergy community, it has re- energised our push for adrenaline auto-injectors to be government funded,” Dixon said. “In Australia, people who are at risk of anaphylaxis, are now eligible for two funded adrenaline autoinjectors each year. In this country, none are funded, and the speed at which the free EpiPens were taken up under FundaPen™ demonstrates to us that there is significant unmet need.”

“Support from the allergy community was unbelievable,” Dixon said, “Our Facebook page received 100,000 hits in the first 24 hours, following the public launch. However, now the project has finished, the question turns to how do we meet the incredible need that FundaPen™ has highlighted?”

“We would love to work with the government and Pharmac to find a way to fund this lifesaving medicine. Until then we’ll keep battling for people with life threatening allergies, who really deserve a whole lot better than they are getting at the moment,” Dixon said.

Top high performance coach for tennis

By Gerald Rillstone A total love of tennis began right in Wainuiomata for high performance coach Marc Paulik way back when he began playing with his family, hitting a ball against the wall.

He is now head coach at the club.

It went from a bit of fun to a bit more serious fun having club coaching and some private lessons with club coach Cliff Spiers, more competitive tennis and playing for New Zealand.

“I started coaching quite early in the piece, in my early 20s and mostly coached at a competitive level and coached guys that have gone on to win New Zealand and national titles,” Marc says.

“I have always had a connection with the club, turning up to various things and at the stage I

am at with my career and family I am now more into wanting to help clubs and do community projects.”

Marc is also participation manager for Hutt Valley Tennis and is on the high performance board for Tennis New Zealand .

“I'm not one to blow my trumpet that much but I want to use the success that I have had with coaching and playing and see if I can help lift the Wainuiomata club to the next level,” he says.

As a coach, player, and as a person Marc is ambitious, motivated, and keen to do his best for tennis and everyone who plays tennis.

He says he has definitely seen some promising talent at the club but it will be a wait and see scenario.

“The main driver for me is getting them involved in a really positive activity.”

“For me, coaching is all about helping people develop the skills to play the game, so that they can get the most out of the physical and mental challenge that tennis presents, and the connection people then make with other tennis enthusiasts whether that’s hitting with family, mates, practicing, playing social club events, or competing in inter-club or tournaments,” Marc says.

As well as playing tennis for New Zealand he has competed in 26 different countries, won national titles, 13 Premier 1 inter-club titles (record), 7 Wellington Premier 1 player of the Year awards (record), and as a coach received the New Zealand Performance Coach of the Year award, coached numerous national champions and regional representatives, and coached NZ teams in international competitions.

What’s Cooking... Have you seen in Mykool?

Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Icing Ingredients: • 3 eggs • 2 cups Chelsea Soft Brown Sugar • 1 cup Olivani Olive Oil Pure • 3 cups grated carrots • 2 1/4 cups Edmonds Standard Grade Flour • 1/2 cup Meadow Fresh Original Milk (warmed) • 1 tsp salt • 2 tsp cinnamon • 2 tsp Edmonds Baking Soda • 1/2 cup walnuts • Cream Cheese Icing • 50g Tararua Butter softened • 1/2 cup cream cheese • 2 cups Chelsea Icing Sugar • 1 tsp vanilla • 2-3 Tbsp Olivani Olive Oil Pure to mix

1. Preheat oven to 160°C bake.

2. Line a 23cm cake tin with baking paper and grease the sides and bottom.

3. Beat eggs and Chelsea Soft Brown Sugar together.

Add oil then all other ingredients - mix well. Pour into cake tin.

4. Bake for 45 - 55 minutes, until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Stand in the tin for 20 mins then turn out and cool on a cake rack. Spread with cream cheese icing when cold.

5. Cream Cheese Icing Beat Tararua Butter and cream cheese together. Add Chelsea Icing Sugar, vanilla and sufficient milk to make a light fluffy icing consistency. Spread over cake and decorate with chopped nuts if desired.

She’s always a great reminder that whatever obstacle stands in your way, with courage you can do just about anything you put your mind to.  What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

I will always pick New Zealand hands down.

I love Taranaki - the freedom and most certainly the smell of the country air. Oh and that mountain view (Maunga Taranaki) is to die for!

Would love to climb it one day.

Hah most probably a silly one for Instagram with some whacky cat filter - just coz!

I wish I could buy a lifestyle block, you know the ones with the picturesque backyards, art inspired interior and funky designer furniture.

A place big enough to build a retreat for children that need a place to call home, exotic flowers would adorn the back yard. I’d also love a few farm animals, sheep, cows, pigs and horses for my girls (ok you can wake me up now ?)

Most probably my son’s recorder.... you know the instrument. Imagine the car ride home in the hands of a 12 year old boy driving all the way back from the Hutt!

Don’t really do much television, but I do love a good Shorty binge with my baby girl and Wentworth.  If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live?

GARDENING THIS WEEK Silicon, plants and psyllids: By Wally Richards I remember years ago buying a car polish that had silicon in it to give your car a tough shine.

About three seasons ago I found another benefit for silicon and that was to overcome the tomato psyllid that was affecting tomatoes, potatoes and tamarillo.

In my case it started a few years ago when I grew a late crop of potatoes.

The plants looked great but when I lifted them there were only pea sized tubers.

I initially thought too much nitrogen was the problem.

I also found that my tomatoes were not doing as well as they had in past seasons.

I moved premises and in my new location the problems became far worse, to the point that my tomato plants would virtually die before producing ripe tomatoes. .

Tamarillo would take off looking great, but as they reached about two metres the leaves would progressively fall off until there were no leaves.

New g row t hs would sprout from the trunk just above where the leaves had dropped off, but then these would also turn brown and die.

I came to realise what the problem was large popu-

lations of psyllid nymphs feasting on the plants and injecting toxins which led to the demise of the plants.

The answer was to make the plants so tough that the nymphs could not pierce the foliage to feed. This was done by using three products that contained silicon.

At the time you plant you use silicon and boron soil drench, and apply that again about two weeks after planting. The boron facilitates the uptake of the silicon by the plant’s roots, which then translocates up into the foliage.

This product is only used twice as too much boron can cause toxicity and loss of the plants.

After the plant has had its second soil drench then we take the silicon cell strengthening spray mixed with the silicon super spreader and spray the foliage of the plant for total coverage.

The super spreader is only used at 1mil to 5 litres of spray and it drives the silicon cell strengthening spray into the plant.

My first season using the cell strengthening kit was amazing as I had very large populations of psyllids which had wintered over and were waiting for the

first smell of tomatoes and tamarillo plants.

As soon as I planted the seedlings into containers I gave them a soil drench and also a spray over the foliage with the other two products combined.

I also hung some sticky white fly traps up to see what adult psyllid would be caught.

Over the next two weeks the traps caught a good number of adults and eggs were building up on the plant’s foliage. Time for a second soil drench and another spray.

Now I was finding dead baby psyllids on the plants and a lot more adults in the traps.

Another two weeks and another spray, with the tomatoes now a metre tall and looking very good.

I continued with the two week sprays till harvesting started and then I stopped.

Fewer and fewer adult psyllids were caught in the traps.

Thousands of psyllid eggs were laid on the plants and all of them hatched, but the baby nymphs could not pierce the tough cells of the plants to feed, so died of starvation within hours of hatching.

This completely broke

the cycle as none reached maturity of adulthood to lay more eggs.

The following season I did not use the kit to see what would happen.

I grew the same tomato variety and the plant grew well but the leaves were about half the size of the previous season and the mature fruit was not as large as before.

I had completely eradicated the psyllid problem in one season.

Even now, about four years later, I have two tamarillo plants from back then performing well and I am still harvesting tomatoes from last season as I have been right through the winter in the glasshouses.

I do use one drench and a very occasional spray of the kit each season just to be sure that the populations of incoming psyllids do not become a problem.

Plant scientists say that silicon helps plants obtain more energy from the sunlight, so they will be inclined to create larger foliage which gives them more energy collection area to produce the vital carbohydrates. This results in bigger, juicier fruit.

Netball more than just injury niggles Netball has an issue if a Sunday night Newshub report is on the money.

More than 20,000 ACC claims for netball-related injuries, has to be a concern for all involved.

Newshub‘s interesting piece last night highlighted an alarming stat for all involved.

More than 23,000 ACC claims were made relating to the sport in the past 12 months.

Over the past decade women receiving ACL surgeries has increased

120 percent compared to 30 percent for men.

Netball New Zealand has launched an injury prevention initiative to try to combat the issue.

I have covered netball at all levels from Saturday amateurs, to the Silver Ferns and everything in between.

The statistics, while high, did not surprise me.

I saw many teenagers wearing ankle and knee supports.

Shin splints were a regular injury at secondary school level and it is easy

to see why.

If a young girl has been playing the sport since they started primary school, it means they have likely played 10 years of netball on cold, concrete courts.

Naturally there is no give in that surface and the stop-start nature of the rules means players are reducing their speed or stopping completely which is an unnatural motion.

All of those factors, I always felt, served to negatively affect the growing limbs of young players.

One of the biggest misconceptions of netball is that it is non-contact.

I’ve seen many-a-player get shunted onto concrete or the hardwood indoor courts during a match.

I’ve seen stray elbows break noses and I’ve seen broken ankles from players stepping on each other’s feet.

Netball can be as physically demanding as any sport I have covered in my 12-year career.

Netball continues to be an immensely popular sport for girls and women in this country and it is

unlikely to change any time soon.

However, as players have become more professional, the speed of the game has increased, the intercepts are more aerial.

The bigger the reward, the higher the risk.

ACL injuries take almost a year for a professional player to return from, an injury like that to a social player is disastrous on many levels.

Netball New Zealand will have to be switched-on to this issue because it is likely to only get worse.

KTM Riders rule the roost in extreme series opener Wainuiomata’s Jake Whitaker picked up where he left off last year when he won the opening round of the 2020 New Zealand Extreme Off-Road Championship series at the weekend.

The four-round series for 2020 roared into life at Moonshine, in the Akatarawa Forest, halfway between Porirua and the Hutt Valley, on Sunday with defending 2019 champion Whitaker – now riding a 2020-model KTM EXC300tpi two-stroke bike – leading a KTM 1-2-3-4 to the top of the podium in the elite Gold Grade.

Helensville’s Tommy Buxton (KTM EXC300) finished runnerup in this gruelling dirt bike series last season and he was again forced to accept the No.2 spot on Sunday, although there was nothing really to separate these two athletes, even after more than four hours of highintensity racing.

Lower Hutt rider Ryan Scullion (KTM EXC300) finished third on Sunday, while New Plymouth’s Tony Parker (KTM XCW300) and Rotorua’s Bradley Lauder (Husqvarna TX300) rounded out the top five in the Gold Grade.

The distinctive orange of KTM motorcycles was to the fore in the lesser grades too.

Top riders in the Silver Grade were Taranaki father and son Dougy Herbert (Husqvarna TE300) and Daniel Herbert (KTM 250 EXCtpi) with Otaki’s Matt Lauder (KTM XC250) finishing third over-

all. Best of the Bronze Grade riders were Rerewhakaaitu’s Zach Sefuiva (KTM EXC 250tpi), Whangamata’s Ethan Jameson (Husqvarna TE150) and Rotorua’s Harrison McClintock (KTM XC150).

“Tommy had the lead on me through the first short lap, but I managed to find a way past him during the long second section,” said the 29-year-old Whitaker afterwards.

“We were neck-and-neck after that, until I managed to break free and establish a bit of an advantage. But then I made a couple of mistakes and, at one stage, I was trapped under my bike and wedged against a tree and that cost me a lot of time. I lost my lead and the battle between us was all on again.

“I was able to stick close to him down a fast gravel road section near the end of the race and it all came down to the last hill climb.

He made a small mistake and I found a way past on the steep hill,” said Whitaker, a record eight-time former national trials champion.

“My trials experience came in handy and I was able to take a different line and edge past Tommy.

“I’ve been working really hard in my build-up for this series and winning on Sunday has given my confidence a huge boost.”

In the end, after five laps and more than four hours of torture, there was just 49 seconds to separate Whitaker from runner-up Buxton.

Round two of the series now follows in the Taungatara Forest, not far from Whangamata, in just two weeks’ time, on September 26.

A two-dayer in Hawke’s Bay will push riders to breaking point at round three on October 31 and November 1, with the competition again wrapping up with another double-header weekend, at the Nut Buster hard enduro at Oxford, near Christchurch, on November 14-15.

Only the bold, brave and superbly

talented should expect to win an event as tough as this, but that should not deter any accomplished dirt bike rider from giving it a crack.

Only two of the three North Island rounds of the championship are counted towards the final tally, with riders to discard their one worst score, while the sole South Island round, the Nut Buster near Christchurch, is obviously a ‘must do’ for any title hopefuls.

Championship calendar: Round one: September 13, Moonshine Extreme, Bulls Run Rd, Porirua.

Round two: September 26, Taungatara Forest, Whangamata.

Round three: October 31-November 1, Over The Top, Hawke’s Bay. Round four: November 14-15, Nut Buster, Oxford, Christchurch.
