The award recognises the outstanding regenerative approach to tourism that Zealandia Te embraces.

The sanctuary has deep community support with hundreds of volunteers and thousands of members.

It delivers world-class learning experiences for youth and has transformed the birdlife of Wellington.

Because of Zealandia, Wellington is now one of the only cities in the world where bird biodiversity is on the rise.

Only minutes from the city centre of the city, Zealandia has nearly 140,000 visitors annually who can get up close with rare and endangered taonga (treasures) who are normally found on offshore islands.

Visitors can experience vulnerable native species such as t e, little spotted kiwi, and tuatara living wild just 2km from downtown Wellington.

None of this would be possible without the charity’s community

of volunteers, supporters and advocates.

Selling the Karori Events Centre was taken off the table at the Wellington City Council’s meeting on the Long Term Plan on 9 November.

The council officer’s proposal to investigate the sale of the Events Centre was changed, after an amendment proposed by independent councillors was passed by the meeting.

The succesful amendment was that the council “pause further works on the Karori Events Centre (Community Hall) until further information on the upgrade costs are available”.

The council’s decision has been welcomed by Heather Baldwin, the Deputy Chair of the Karori Community Hall Trust.

“We are glad that [Wellington City Council] have taken the sale of the Events Centre off the table,” Heather told the “Independent Herald”.

“We were absolutely surpised to hear that they were even considering selling the Events Centre.

“Our community does need this [facility].

“We are the largest suburb in Wellington and we don’t have a community hall. A community our size should have one,” Heather said “We were alarmed and deeply disappointed that the [Karori Community Hall] Trust was not consulted over this proposal, despite ongoing discussions with council officers regarding the completion of the Karori Events Centre (KEC),” Heather said in a letter addressed to the Mayor and Councillors before the 9 November meeting.

“The decision proposed by council officers would constitute a serious breach of the good faith and clear intent when this

building was gifted to council.

“If the current recommendation is adopted, you can expect strong opposition.

“We expect also that there will be significant community outrage.

“There is a high expectation that WCC will complete this building. There is also a need to honour the obligations to donors who contributed to the building, and to ensure the city’s largest suburb does not continue to be without the facility and services that it needs and lost several years ago,” the letter said.

“It is also important to note that the land in the area, and the currently unfinished building, are the product of decades of community donations and gifts to WCC with the expectation that the site and buildings would be used for community purposes.

“In December 2022 WCC agreed that it would complete KEC, once gifted to them, in place of a prior commitment to provide the net proceeds from the sale of the St John’s site in Karori (which had been gifted

to the council in the 1990s for community purposes),” the letter said.

“The Karori Event Centre was developed with the support and agreement of WCC. “It replaces three community halls previously gifted to the council that were demolished leaving Karori without a replacement community hall.

“As far back as 2005 WCC accepted the development of a new community hall was the best way to meet a range of needs for the Karori community,” Heather’s letter said.

“Such a hall delivers numerous benefits consistent with the council’s priorities, including: Contributing to a strong social infrastructure that supports diverse, inclusive and resilient communities.

Successfully delivering another part of the city-wide network of effective community spaces that meet the community’s needs.

Being a centre for welfare response, social recovery and co-ordination in the event of a civil defence emergency in

the area.

It’s a project that is already underway where WCC can demonstrate quickly, a successful community project.”

The Karori Events Centre was one of a number of community facilities the council considered at its meeting on the Long Term Plan on 9 November.

The officers had recommended that the planned Grenada North Sports Field be “rephased” (meaning delayed) by a few years.

However all three Northern Ward Councillors insisted it was a priority and needed to continue as originally planned.

Their successful amendment provided that capital work on the Grenada North Sports Field will commence in year 2 of the Long Term Plan.

The meeting also agreed to reinstate $3.1 million for the development of th i Landscape Plan.

The Khandallah Swimming Pool will also be retained in the Long Term Plan to allow a review of a Quantity Survey and alternatives to be explored.

Lunar New Year Festival saved

Next year’s Chinese Lunar New Year Festival is going to happen, thanks to Lee Kum Kee providing sponsorship.

This popular event on the Wellington calendar looked unlikely to be taking place next year when the organisers, the Asian Events Trust, had been unable to secure funding.

The day after that announcement Wellington City Councillor Ray Chung announced that he would front up with $10,000 towards the cost of the festival.

Cr Chung, one of the Wharangi/Onslow-Western Ward Councillors, has welcomed the news the festival is going ahead.

The news, he says, came as “a big surprise. It was a very big surprise.

“I’m very pleased that it is going ahead because it should.

“I think it is very very apt that Lee Kum Kee are sponsoring it because they are involved in the Asian community,” Cr Chung says, adding that he will still be putting $10,000 into the project.

important year on the Chinese calendar,” Cr Chung says.

Wellington City Council will provide $10,000 towards the festival from its Events Fund.

That compares with an average of $45,000 that the council has provided in previous years.

It also compared with the $150,000 the council provided for a fireworks display to celebrate Matariki, the Wharangi/ Onslow-Western Ward Councillor says.

Waipahihi Karori Stream clean up

A clean up of the Wai hi Karori Stream, with the assistance of Ghost Diving New Zealand, will take place on Saturday 18 November, starting at 9am.

The divers from Ghost Diving will take to the water to remove rubbish and debris.

Members of the Friends of the Wai hi Karori Stream (FOWKS) will also be helping with the clean up, and they will welcome anyone from the community who comes along to help.

FOWKS was formed in October 2020 under Karori Residents’ Association’s umbrella to provide ongoing care of the Wai hihi Karori Stream.

“I started this group because I felt the community needed to take some responsibility for the water and what is going on with it,” says Andrea Skews, the Chair of the Karori Residents Association.

After FOWKS was formed it signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Wellington City Council to provide ongoing care of the stream.

FOWKS has three main objectives. These are:

s to understand and educate community around current condition, causes and ways to improve for future; s improvement of wai quality and biodiversity; and s caretaking for future generations.

The Karori Stream originates in the hills around South Karori and flows into Cook Strait. The catchment is dominated by steep, hilly terrain and urban land use.

Stormwater runoff is primarily responsible for the poor health of the stream.

More than 56% of the 3,072 ha catchment is in native or exotic vegetation cover.

Around 20% of the catchment is protected by convenants.

The variety of habitats in the catchment provide home for a wide variety of native fish, which are likely to include shortfin eel, longfin eel, giant kokopu, koaro, dwarf galaxies, banded kokopu, inanga, shortjaw kokopu, lamprey, nonmigratory bullies, common bully, giant bully, bluegill bully, redfin, bully, koura, and smelt.

Andrea is looking forward to Saturday’s clean up of the stream, and the involvement of Ghost Diving New Zealand.

Seminar on macular degeneration

Thorndon resident Boyd Klap is keen to share his story following his diagnosis with macular degeneration, particularly in light of an upcoming seminar being run

by Macular Degeneration New Zealand (MDNZ).

MDNZ is running a free public awareness and education seminar at 10am on 25 November at the Copthorne Hotel.

The seminar will be delivered by local ophthalmologist Dr James Leong and will inform and educate about the disease.

“I was referred to a specialist and have regular checks,” Boyd says.

pointments in 2013 that he noticed the signs of macular degeneration.”

Although he was upset to discover he had macular degeneration, he

was happy it had been picked up.

“I was pleased it was discovered at an early stage.”

The specialist “also did cataract operations on both my eyes,” Boyd says.

“I feel it’s just one of those things when you get to a certain age but I have not let it have any impact on my life – although I do need a strong light to read and sit closer to the TV now.”

Boyd says that ageing can be stressful, and there are many things to worry about such as Alzheimer’s.

“However, it is necessary to try and be positive in mind and body.

“I swim regularly and go tramping, although I admit I have given up skiing now.”

Although he doesn’t like having

the injections, Boyd says it is better than the alternative.

An active, independent 96-yearold who is heavily involved in community activities, Boyd cannot even entertain the idea of losing his sight.

Because of his early diagnosis and treatments, he has been able to continue do the work that he loves, volunteering in his community.

He has recently finished organising a tour of the Anne Frank Exhibition throughout Australia and New Zealand, and the translation of the Diary of Anne Frank into Te Reo. He already has a couple of new projects up his sleeve and is not letting his macular degeneration get in the way.

“I now see the specialist every

three months, but if I see a wobble in reading lines, and a slow deterioration in my sight, then I see the specialist immediately,” he says.

“I’m comfortable having regular check-ups, and reading tests put me well above the driving license line. When I asked my specialist if I’d still be driving at 100 the answer was positive, but he could not guarantee 110%.”

Boyd says he cannot emphasise enough the importance of early diagnosis, and compliance with treatment.

“The sooner patients consult an expert and start treatment the better.

“I know several people, including my sister, who are now blind or nearly blind because they left it too late,” he says.

The very popular Garden Concert Series and Light Display returns to the Botanic Gardens ki Pae early next year.

The two will run from Tuesday 9 to Sunday 28 January.

Set in the Botanic Gardens Soundshell, the concert series will run from 7pm to 9:15pm.

The free concerts start earlier than in the past, with a warm-up solo act from 7pm before the main act at 8pm. Concerts are on Tuesday to Sunday each week, with Monday kept as a rain day.

The Light Display will run from 9pm to 11pm daily.

As the sun sets people will be able to see the gardens transformed with a magical light display by MJF Lighting.

Ealier in the day on each of these days there will be a Kids Garden Trail, running from 9am to 5pm daily.

Activity sheets for the Kids Garden Trail will be available from the Tree House, near the Soundshell, or at the Cable Car ticket office.

Cable Car will be lit up purple

Wellington’s Cable Car will be one of a series of New Zealand landmarks lit up in purple tomorrow (17 November) to mark World Prematurity Day. It will be one of more than 45 iconic New Zealand landmarks lit up in purple alongside international landmarks like the Empire State Building, the Trevi Fountain and Niagara Falls.

The New Zealand initiative is thanks to the Little Miracles Trust, which provides support and resources for parents and w au of premature and unwell babies across Aotearoa.

The trust’s aim is to raise awareness of prematurity and the concerns of preterm babies and their families worldwide.

Infants born preterm represent the largest child patient group.

This year The Little Miracles Trust will be organising a number of activities based around World Prematurity Day, including: Thanking neonatal nurses; Sharing personal stories – giving hope and encouragement, and raising awareness; and Lighting Up Purple.

This is the seventh time New Zealand has taken part in the ‘Lighting Up Purple’ campaign, which is designed to raise awareness of the 15,000,000 babies born prematurely worldwide each year, and the 1,000,000 of these babies who sadly lose their fight for life.

The team at the Little Miracles Trust have worked throughout the year to encourage uptake of the ‘Lighting Up Purple’ cause and this year for the first time the iconic Castlepoint Lighthouse will be joining other well-known New Zealand landmarks such as Eden Park and the Bucket Fountain in Cuba Mall.

Also lighting up purple are the Michael Fowler Centre, Auckland’s Maritime Museum, Hamilton’s Anzac Parade Bridge, Christchurch International Airport and Control Tower as well as many town clock

towers, sculptures, and fountains.

“We’re here to make a difficult start to life that little bit easier,” says Rachel Friend, CEO at the Little Miracles Trust.

“It’s a time that no one is prepared for – time when you need someone who knows what you’re going through to tell you it’s going to be alright, someone who can give you the kind of support that will make all the difference.”

“We are incredibly grateful for the support we receive and the willingness of these incredible landmarks and our supporters to get involved.

“It’s just another example of the overwhelming kindness the Aotearoa community gives to charities.”

Many Kiwis are personally affected, or have friends and family who have experienced premature births, or had a sick baby require specialist care.

“It’s an issue which affects a significant amount of our population, and we are excited to see the communities get behind our campaign” she adds.

Well-known radio personalities and premature baby parents, Sharyn and Bryce Casey sum up what the Little Miracles Trust do to support parents.

“They perform little miracles every day for the parents and for the wh u who are going through what’s an incredibly tough time,” Bruce says.

For Sharyn, it was those daily little miracles that made a real difference to what was an incredibly stressful time.

“Their support was just indescribable,” Sharyn says.

A premature baby is born every 90 minutes on average in Aotearoa. That’s more than 5,000 or 10% of all babies each year who have to go through a NICU or Special Care Baby Unit.

In addition to premature babies, sick fullterm babies are cared for in neonatal units.

The complications these babies face are often only apparent once the baby is born.

Northern Chorale in concert Celebrating Stars in their infinite variety is the theme of the Northern Chorale’s concert on 19 November.

The concert will feature songs that carry messages of hope and joy, inspired by the beauty of the Star of Bethlehem, the Christmas Story, and New Zealand’s own starry skies.

There will also be an opportunity for the audience to join in with some of the well known songs.

The concert will be held in the Khandallah Town Hall at 2pm on Sunday 19 November, followed by afternoon tea.

Entry is $20 for adults and $10 for students while children are free. Door sales are available.

This year’s Youthline fundraiser on 4 November, run by Khandallah residents Vino and Anselm Martyn, raised $6,100.

Since the Martyns moved from Australia to New Zealand in 2018 they have raised $32,000 for the organisation that supports young people aged between 12 and 24 years throughout the country.

Named a FUNdraiser, the evening of dinner, music and dance was held at Atura Hotel and featured a stella line-up of entertainment.

Karen Jones performed prelude music, L.O.D Dance Studio entertained those attending and the live band was The Party Animals. Last but not least Anselm performed on saxophone and vox.

Vino and Anselm run the FUNdraisers in memory of their 17-year-old son Anshan, who took his own life around 25 years ago.

“It’s a legacy for our son, Vino says.

“He was born as an angel and he left as an angel.

“We took a long time to come to terms with

the loss but we have accepted that we must keep raising awareness.”

In order to help and raise awareness Vino and Anselm set up the charity A V Funding Youth in order to raise funds for Youthline.

They have already set the date for next year’s FUNdraiser. It will be held on Saturday 9 November.

Youthline is New Zealand’s leading youth mental health and youth development organisation.

Funds from A V Funding Youth “will go towards keeping Youthline Wellington so that we can continue to provide support to our young people,” Youthline manager Vicki Beachen says.

“Generous donations like yours helps us to create a professional and effective service so that our helpline volunteers can answer calls, texts, emails and webchat messages from people who are in need and also run interactive programmes that help develop our community, like our youth development, mental health peer support and education programmes.”

Newlands shooting justified

Two Police officers were justified in their decision to shoot Samuel Fakalago to save a woman’s life, the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) has found.

Mr Fakalago was shot in Newlands on 7 June 2022, says the IPCA decision, released on 2 November.

Police went to the address after receiving calls that a man had beaten a pregnant woman on her driveway, threatened to stab her, and dragged her inside the house.

When Police arrived, Mr Fakalago threatened to shoot the officers and barricaded the front door.

Police surrounded the house while waiting for the Armed Offenders Squad to arrive.

However before they arrived Mr Fakalago came to the back door with the woman, holding a knife to her throat.

Mr Fakalago did not drop the knife when challenged, and the two officers each fired four shots.

Officers provided first aid to Mr Fakalago.

However, he died at the scene.

“We are satisfied that the officers needed

to act immediately to prevent Mr Fakalago from seriously injuring or killing the woman, and that the opportunity to pause or deploy less lethal options was not available to them,” the IPCA Chair Judge Kenneth Johnston KC said.

The Police have welcomed the IPCA decision.

After Mr Fakalago held a knife to the woman’s throat “Police made repeated appeals for him to release the knife and the woman.

“However he failed to do so,” the Police said in a media release.

Officers considered the options available to them, and Mr Fakalago was subsequently shot by Police.

Wellington District Commander Superintendent Corrie Parnell says Police are forced to make quick decisions to keep people safe, and the decision to use lethal force is not something officers ever want to do.

It is always a last resort.

“I am confident the officers involved took the only option available to them in the circumstances to ensure the woman’s safety and prevent further harm,” Superintendent Parnell says.

Check out the armoured vehicles

Armoured vehicles will be driving down the streets of Karori and soldiers will also be marching on Saturday 26 November.

They will be converging on Ben Burn Park for the unveiling of a plaque commemorating Wellingtonians who served in the South African War. Organised by the Wellington and Karori RSAs and the Karori Residents Association, the unveiling has a 10:30am arrival time for an 11am start.

Among those at the unveiling will be a contingent from the Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles.

This is the New Zealand Army’s oldest regiment, having formed in 1864. It is currently an armoured cavalry unit equipped with light armoured vehicles.

Soldiers with the Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles will be marching from the Karori RSA down Campbell Street to Ben Burn Park.

Karori played an important role for the New Zealanders who fought in the South African War (also known as the Second Anglo-Boer War).

Recruits from throughout the country were sent to a training camp that had been established at Campbell’s Karori farm.

The Kiwi contingent that left Karori comprised 204 men in two companies, with No 1 Company mainly from the North Island and the No 2 Company mainly from the South Island.

Hundreds of men applied to serve in the South African War, and by the time the war began in October 1899, the First Contingent was already preparing to depart for South Africa.

By the time peace was concluded 2½ years later, 10 contingents of volunteers totalling more than 6,500 men (plus 8,000 horses) had sailed for South Africa, along with doctors, nurses, veterinary surgeons and about 20 schoolteachers.

Secret Library The Newlands Community Centre is now a drop-off and pick-up location for the Secret Library.

The Secret Library hides books around the community to be found by local tamariki. These books can then be

returned to be re-hidden, or if the book is too good to let go, it can be kept.

The community centre has a stack of books waiting to be hidden, and accepts donations of children’s books for this initiative.

Celebrating a first for Karori Seventy people turned out to a special event in Karori on 14 November to celebrate the success of eight people nominated by their work organisations to receive achievement awards in the inaugural Karori Employee Appreciation Awards.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Karori, in conjunction with the Karori Business Association, the awards give Karori businesses and community organisations the opportunity to publicly acknowledge employees and volunteers who are outstanding performers in the work place.

Allan Frazer, a Past President of the Rotary Club of Karori, who initiated the event with leaders in the Karori Business Association, said the awards recognised some very special people who in various ways have gone out of their way to make a significant difference to the success of the organisations where they work in Karori and in turn help to make the wider community of Karori a better place for all.

He paid a warm tribute to the Karori Business Association for getting behind the project, for their financial and administrative support to make this “first” a great success.

“Our Rotary Club has been a Karori institution for over 40 years, continuing to provide community faciliities, supporting community groups and to come up with initiatives like this programme to recognise successful individuals and their contributions to work organisations” Allan said.

Penny Murdoch, for the Karori Business Association, said the KBA was delighted to support this venture and to encourage businesses and volunteer organisations to keep identifying people who make a difference to their needs.

Guest speaker at the event was Jamie Fitzgerald, a Karori resident, an intrepid explorer to many parts of the world, including the Antarctic, and rower across the Atlantic, who had many tales to tell and key messages for surviving and winning.

Three local potters are among the 20 potters and ceramic artists from throughout Wellington who are opening their studios on 25 and 26 November.

This year’s Wellington Ceramics Open Studios weekend is the first in what will become an annual national New Zealand Ceramics Open Studios event.

It will provide a rare opportunity for the curious to step inside a working studio, chat with a local artist and experience the simple pleasures of clay

The hottest world for 125,000 years

This year is “virtually certain” to be the warmest in 125,000 years, European Union scientists said on 8 October.

The “Independent Herald” has decided to report this as it was surprised to note that this very important news was not being covered nationally by New Zealand’s media.

Climate change is fuelling increasingly destructive extremes.

New Zealand has seen this not just with the devastation caused

by Cyclone Gabrielle but also with the local occurence of destructive weather events and with landslides.

Last month smashed through the previous October temperature record, from 2019, by a massive margin, the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said.

This statement is contained in a Reuters news report by Kate

“The record was broken by 0.4 degrees Celsius, which is a huge margin,” said C3S Deputy Director Samantha Burgess, who described the October temperature anomaly as “very extreme”.

The heat is a result of continued greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, combined with the emergence this year of the El Nino weather pattern, which warms the surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Globally, the average surface air temperature in October was 1.7 degrees Celsius warmer than the same month in 1850-1900, which Copernicus defines as the pre-industrial period.

The record-breaking October means 2023 is now “virtually certain” to be the warmest year recorded, C3S said in a statement.

The previous record was 2016 – another El Nino year.

Copernicus’ dataset goes back to 1940.

“When we combine our data with the IPCC, then we can say that this is the warmest year for the last 125,000 years,” Ms Burgess said.

The longer-term data from the United Nations climate science panel IPCC includes readings from sources such as ice cores, tree rings and coral deposits.

The only other time before October a month breached the temperature record by such a large margin was in September 2023.

“September really, really surprised us,” Ms Burgess said.

“So after last month, it’s hard to determine whether we’re in a new climate state. But now records keep tumbling and they’re surprising me less than they did a month ago.”

Despite countries setting increasingly ambitious targets to gradually cut emissions, so far that has not happened. Global CO2 emissions hit a record high in 2022.

Newlands Primary School Notice regarding out of zone enrolments for Term 2 2024 Enrolment at Newlands Primary School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available on our website https://newlandsprimary.school.nz/enrolments/. The Board has determined that up to 5 places are likely to be available for out of zone new entrant students wishing to commence during Term 2 2024 (29 April to 05 July 2024). The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. The Board has determined we also have a small number of spaces still available for new entrants from Term 1 2024 (01 February to 12 April 2024).

For students seeking enrolment to commence school during Term 2 or Term 1 2024 deadline for receipt of applications for out of zone places is 9:00am Friday 08 December 2023. If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot for out of zone students is required, this will be held on Friday 08 December 2023. NEWS TIPS

Look for hidden gardens People can seach for five gardens that have been hidden around the city – four of them in the “Independent Herald’s” circulation area.

Five Wellington City Council horticulture apprentices have carefully crafted the gardens with support from experienced mentors.

The Hidden Gardens project is now in its fourth year, and more information about it is on the council’s website at https://wellington.govt.nz/recreation/outdoors/hidden-gardens.

The apprentices, who are all involved in the council’s three-year horticulture apprenticeship, have been developing their unique themed gardens since January, with creative themes ranging from witches, ferns and fungi, to tipu toi, the power of the soil, and an alpine adventure.

They and the council are inviting everyone to spend time at the gardens and enjoy the space with a picnic with friends and wh u.

As these gardens are hidden, the council will be posting hints about the whereabouts of these gardens on above the website from yesterday, 15 November.

There are many positive elements of

the Hidden Gardens project, Elspeth McMillan, the Apprentice Coordinator says “The Hidden Gardens are passion projects for the apprentices.

“It provides them with a great opportunity to hone their project management and teamwork skills, while applying their creativity and horticulture knowledge gained through their day-to-day work experience and study for their NZ Certificate in Horticulture Services – Amenity.

“The project was also designed to encourage Wellingtonians to explore spaces that they may not have been to within our parks and reserves.”

The public will be able to vote for their favourite garden in the People’s Choice award by scanning the QR code at the garden or visiting the Hidden Gardens page of the Council website.

But there will be more than one winner harvesting rewards. By voting for the People’s Choice, everyone will go in the draw to win a prize pack from the Treehouse Visitor Centre.

Clues are being revealed on the website and voting started on 15 November and closes on Tuesday 12 December.

Century for Onslow batsman

A century by Vice-Captain Micah Conroy was a big feature of Onslow’s crushing victory over Wainuiomata in Cricket’s Hazlett Cup competition on 11 October.

Batting first at Nairnville Park, Onslow reached 275 before they were all out.

Micah scored 107 from 105 deliveries to lead the Onslow cause.

The next highest Onslow batsmen were Harry Finch and Oscar Jackson, who each scored 28 runs.

Onslow then dismissed Wainuiomata for just 86 runs, giving them a 189-run win.

The Captain, Sean O’Connor was outstanding with the ball, taking seven wickets and conceding just four runs in five overs and five balls. That meant Sean gave away just 0.68 runs an over.

Matthew Scobie also bowled well, taking two wickets at a cost of 12 runs from the six overs he bowled.

Karori scored a comfortble 53 run victory over Eastern Suburbs in their Ewen Chatfield Trophy match, played at Karori Park.

Batting first the home team scored 195

for the loss of nine wickets. They then had Suburbs all out for 142 in the 39th over.

After notching up his half century Alex Thmpson fell soon after for 52.

Kevin Weerasundara also batted well to reach 44, as did Max Parun, who scored 40.

Two players – Max Sargentina and Hugh Teesdale – took three wickets each, while Jago Sperring took two wickets.

In addition to scoring 44 runs, Kevin also took another of the wickets to fall.

Also playing in the Ewen Chatfield Cup Johnsonville did not have such a good day.

They lost to Taita, who overtook the Johnsonville score in the 33rd over.

Batting first Johnsonville scored 161 for the loss of nine wickets in their 50 overs.

Captain Devan Vishvaka came close to notching up a half century, but was out for 47 runs.

Two of the Johnsonville bowlers – Sean Wakelin and Connor Lusty – took three wickets each.

The Ewen Chatfield Trophy is contested over 50 overs by the division one teams while the Hazlett Cup is for the divison two teams.

J’ville wins both fours titles

Johnsonville’s bowlers scooped the pool at the Wellington Centre Open Fours Championship, winning both the men’s and women’s titles.

The men’s team secured a comfortable 20-6 victory over Lyall Bay in the final after beating Victoria in the semi-final.

Skipped by Phil Todd, who was also celebrating his birthday, the men’s team also included Grant Wakefield, Ken Brown and A J Cronin.

In his comments at the presentations, Phil said he was pleased to finally win this event, having been close several times.

The women’s team won the championship when they defeated Naenae 18-11 in the final after beating Plimmerton in the semi-final.

June Wairau skipped the women’s team and the other team members were Lil George, Janet Nehemia and Merani Davis.

Although it has happened in the past, it is unusual for the one club to win both the fours titles in the same year.

Crossing work the highlight

Work to improve the pedestrian crossing outside Newlands School has been welcomed by the Chair of the Newlands Paparangi Progressive Association [NPPA] Jim Bishop.

“It’s finally getting done after 26 months” that the NPPA has been asking Wellington City Council for it to happen. “”That’s the highlight of the year for us,” Jim says.

The council is both raising the crossing and putting new lights on either side of it “which is all very necessary.

“It’s a safety issue,” Jim says.

“In order to be safe you have to be able to see them,” especially the children using the crossing, he adds in welcoming the installation of new lights.

Raising the crossing also helps by slowing down the traffic.

Council leak not identified

There was “insufficient evidence” to identify who leaked details about Wellington City Council’s secret Reading Cinemas sale, an investigation into a Code of Conduct complaint against five Councillors has found.

After Deputy Mayor Laurie Foon laid the complaint the Mayor, Tory Whanau, hired lawyer Linda Clark to investigate the complaint, laid against Diane Calvert, Ray Chung, Tony Randle, Nicola Young and Iona Pannett.

Ms Clark has provided a draft of her report on the investigation to the five Councillors.

The complaint alleged that the

five councillors had shared information following council meeting held behind closed doors on 4 October to consider the Reading Cinema sale.

Four of the five Councillors did not participate in the investigation.

Councillors Diane Calvert, Ray Chung, Tony Randle and Nicola Young said in a media release issued on 1 November that they would not be participating in what they described as a political and biased attack.

Although Ms Clark has found there was insufficient evidence to identify who leaked information about the meeting to consider the Reading Cinema sale – which was the basis of the Code of Conduct

complaint – all five Councillors broke the code by talking to the media or commented online once details of the deal were leaked.

Ms Clark also found that Councillors Chung, Calvert and Young also breached the code by publicly criticising council officers.

Following the release of the report both Crs Calvert and Chung told the “Independent Herald” that they considered the review exercise was a waste of ratepayer money.

“The cost of the investigation was $1400 an hour plus GST. I have been told that the budget for this is $50,000 to $100,000,” Cr Chung said.

“How many water leaks can you fix for that?”
