An 18-year reunion of the Wellington Carnival Street Band has led to an unlikely reformation.

runoff and other material ending up in our harbours, especially the Porirua harbour in the case of development north of Johnsonville and Newlands. The Wellington City Council are concerned that the existing infrastructure cannot handle the pressure it comes under when new housing areas are developed. Existing infrastructure is aging and needs upgrading across our city, as evidenced by recent pipe failures. An advantage of intensification of existing areas means more people, therefore more ratepayers to pay for those upgrades.

As of midnight last Monday, mask mandates, the most visible reminder of the COVID epidemic and the Traffic light system, have been largely removed. COVID decisions have always been about preventing our health system from being overwhelmed by COVID patients, who would also prevent others with ‘conventional’ emergencies like heart attacks from being treated. It’s a good time to reflect on how successful we have been at keeping New Zealanders alive while we waited for the vaccine to arrive. Despite the recent politicisation by opponents of the response, I find most people in the electorate are grateful we didn’t end up with US and UK type death rates. The average life expectance in the USA has dropped by 3 years largely as result of COVID, while ours has gone up. Here’s hoping we never need to wind the response back up again. It was certainly a traumatic time in our history. And speaking of historical events,

Developers of course need to make a profit, and wish to keep their compliance costs as low as possible. Many believe the Resource Management Act is too cumbersome. We as government for our part have undertaken to rewrite that act.

the other thing which has occupied us is the Queens death. I’m not an avid royalist, but I do have to say that her passing, and the ascension of King Charles to the throne has united people and politicians here and around the world in a way probably nothing else could. She has ruled for so long we had to dust of the manuals to work out the protocols. Suspending Parliament and having a public holiday has been the norm in most other commonwealth countries. Not everyone will agree, and there may be some review of the situation in future, but for now it’s appropriate we abide by existing protocols. All societies need traditions, and we will see both UK’s and ours on display over the coming week.

Another safe to use is mixing Ammonium sulphamate at 200 grams per litre of water and spraying on a sunny day when the soil is on the dry side. Give those conditions weeds are likely to be dead within an hour or two.

There are plenty of chores to attend to at this time of the year as the day light hours increase and plants emerging from their winter rest.

Unwanted plants are very valuable if you make use of them and treat them as a fodder crop.Smaller unwanted plants should be cut off just below soil level with a sharp carving knife or sharp Dutch Hoe.

After cutting down the weeds with the above you can leave the stubble unless you want to clear the ground which means cutting off the weeds below soil level with a sharp carving knife.Real tough root systems I have used a box cutter on which makes the job a breeze as long as you are careful not to cut yourself.

Strong points raised against reshaping streets proposal

Hardy plants will be showing very good growth now including the plants you do not want commonly referred to as weeds.

I even wonder what harm it does to our gut bacteria when people drink chlorinated tap water.

If you have waste areas or cobbles/cracks where weeds flourish then sprinkle salt over the area and lightly water. The weeds are killed and stay weed free for a time.

Taller weeds can be cut down with a weed eater such as using the Pivotrim Pro attachment which are available from Mitre10 Mega stores.(This are far superior to using the roll of weed eater plastic tape which I always found a problem using.)

If you do not have any plants in your glasshouse so far, then you can burn sulphur powder inside the house to fumigate it of insect pests that maybe hiding away.

It is just common sense, a chemical poison that is added to water to kill microbes is going to do the same to the beneficial microbes in your soil and effect the valuable earth worms.

Spray the above potassium permanganate adding Wallys Liquid Copper for protection of curly leaf on stone fruit about every week till disease time is past.

Great stuff and reusable season after season.Ifyou want great gardens this season then use only natural products that will not harm the soil life and earth worms.

Using this method means a large quantity of water can be treated saving the need to boil.

“But this proposal has fishhooks that could slow down travel, make it harder to find parks, and keep people out of central cities. Transport systems are interdependent and complicated and not solved on a street by street basis.”

Does not harm plants if they are sprayed at the same time.

The foliage falls onto the bare soil where it is quickly broken down by the soil life providing them with more substance to nurture your preferred plants.

Also ideal to use for moss in lawns and liverwort growing all over the place. To obtain best results adjust the nozzle of the sprayer so it is a bit of a jet which forces the product into the target area.

This removes the root system from the foliage leaving the roots to rot off in the soil providing a rich source of food for the soil life.

Start spraying strawberry plants 2 weekly with Mycorrcin which will increase your harvests by 200 to 400 %. They will fruit earlier, more fruit, larger berries and a longer cropping season.

These methods of weeding enhances your soil or growing medium where chemical herbicides greatly harm the soil life and your plants suffer.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce shares recent concerns raised by the ACT Party on the “Reshaping Streets” proposal from Waka Kotahi.

Simon Arcus signals support for some aspects of the proposal, “Ultimately, this is not a green light from Waka Kotahi for arbitrary decision making. Our sense is the Council will still prefer to consult on change because it’s just better city management.TheChamber supports getting regulations out of the way to speed up infrastructure projects, and slow down cost. We urge policymakers to reconsider the proposal to include genuine, inclusive consultation, rather than unilateral decision-making.”TheReshapingStreets proposal is open for consultation until 19.

An interesting bit of information you can purify drinking water of harmful bacteria by placing 3 or 4 grains into a litre of water, agitate to make water a light pink and leave for 24 hours before drinking.

Hey Everyone! The windy Spring season is here and is time to catch-up on your yearly Spring Clean. We all clean our homes regularly, but this is an opportunity to give your home a thorough, much-needed once-over so that your in-between cleans are sufficient. If you are thinking of selling, these smaller details make a big difference to the sale. Here are 5 areas to get started!

5 Spring Cleaning Tips? YIP!

2. Bathroom : Check your taps / shower heads for build-up, polish water stains from floors / walls. Check the seals on the shower as silicon can deteriorate after a few years and can cause leaks. Go through that drawer full of toiletries you never use, sort through it all and give your drawers a quick wipe. Bathroom fans also gather a lot of dust, so give that wipe too.

1 Kitchen : Do the fridge shuffle, get that right under there and clear up all the food crumbs that could be harbouring smells there, do the same for the stove. Your rangehood and oven will also be building up in oil/food stains, that can cause smells when you are using them. Wipe down all your pantry shelving, and while you are at it – check everything hasn’t expired.

gets overlooked are curtains, it is amazing & scary how much dust gathers on things like that. Take them out for a good shake, give insides a good wipe and dry properly to avoid mould. 3. Outside : As we don’t get too much dry weather, coordinating your free time with garden work is hard in Wellington. When we get some fine weather get on with clearing gutters/drains, pruning back trees/bushes that may be encroaching the house and get all that lichen/ moss/green stuff off the house! It may also be time to throw out all that rubbish tucked around the garden / under the house too.

For the councillor Wharangi/Onslow-Westernof General Ward

I will forever be mindful to represent that all people in our electoral are treated in a respectful and fair manner. I commit to implementing access to affordable Green Homes. I support lower council rates and public transport fares, investment in infrastructure, and action on carbon

Glover Park, located between Ghuznee Street and Garrett Street, will be getting a refresh as work continues on the Swan Lane and Garrett Street precinct upgrade. Work has started in the area, beginning with the south-western corner of the park first (outside The Rogue & Vagabond), so that it is the first space in the park to be completed in November for the start of the busy Summer period. The rest of Glover Park is expected to be fully completed by December 2022.

Hutt City Council Head of Climate and Waste, Jörn Scherzer says directly targeting the sector with the region’s greatest carbon intensity is a win for both the climate and the region’s road users.

“This project represents the greatest level of co-investment in public charging anywhere in the country. It will go a long way to

Glover Park set for a refresh

Vote #1 KUSH BHARGAVA A LeadershipNewforBetterFuture

Hi I’m Kush Bhargava, a candidate running for the Wharangi/Onslow-Western General Ward seat in the upcoming Wellington City Council (WCC) elections. My overall goal is to represent everyone in our electoral, treating them with respect through any decisions the council and I make. Below is how I plan on achieving this important objective.

Glover Park, located between Ghuznee Street and Garrett Street, will be getting a refresh as work continues on the Swan Lane and Garrett Street precinct upgrade.

It is very important to me that we protect the environment. As mentioned, I operate Eco Green Homes, but my passion for sustainably also reaches outside of my career. As someone who has a great love for nature and animals, I think that the council needs to start using more environmentally friendly practices and

facilities around our city. I am confident and qualified to use my international green procurement and carbon management experience to reduce the WCC’s expenditure and make Wellington a carbon neutral city.

These upgrades at Glover Park have been initiated as part of the renewal program across Wellington Parks. This will mean less future maintenance and include: Complete resurfacing through the centre

“Once the Zero rollout is complete, Wellington will have one of

Wellington’s position as home to the nation’s most electrified transport fleet is getting a major boost as Meridian Energy launches its new Zero EV charging network in the Meridiancapital.ispartnering with Wellington and Hutt City Councils to deliver the network, which will double the current number of EV charging stations in the region with at least 60 expected to be installed in Wellington City and 20 in Lower Hutt over the next few years. Meridian will install and manage the network on behalf of the councils, which will purchase and retain ownership of the chargers.

Firstly, I am committed to implementing policies that benefit first-home buyers. I believe that everyone should have the ability to purchase an affordable ecofriendly home. I have previous experience as the CEO of The New Zealand Energy Forum and since 2010, I have been the CEO of Eco Green Homes. I plan on using my experience running these businesses to push the council to construct more sustainable homes that can be purchased by first-home buyers. This will not only support those hoping to get on the property market but our environment as well.

I will also push for more transparency and accountability from the local government. I would propose a digital platform, where people can log in with their real identities and express their ideas and opinions to local councillors in a confidential manner, which can help them to make or change their policies and decisions based on public ideas and suggestions, not their own agendas.

“We’ve invested heavily in Zero to make sure EV drivers have a great experience. We’re proud to be leaders in destination charging and to be supporting Wellington and Hutt City Councils to tackle the significant climate challenge at hand.”

Andrea

To be clear, I’ve been the founding member, president and head cheerleader of the Kane Williamson Fan Club long before he made his international debut but his batting and especially his captaincy were not up to standard during the tour.

19Thursday September 15, 2022SPORT

The 3-0 ODI whitewash at the hands of a mediocre Australia should force some serious thought about the where this team goes from here.

New Johnsonville Cricket Club life member, Rick Mudgway with two of his grandchildren who are both cricket fanatics Lily, 5 and Arlo, 18 months.

He coached the Premier Boys team in Scott’s last year at Intermediate, 1999.

Williamson is a world class player and I’m sure he can and will return to that but perhaps taking the captaincy off him with the two coloured clothing might help his overall game.

club, with less teams than now and a not so healthy financial position.

Tough calls need to be made on players and their futures, this golden era of New Zealand cricket is starting to close, but it doesn’t mean we have to go back to the dark ages of the mid 1990s when we were easy beats.

Zimbabwe gave the Aussies a tougher time the week before and actually won a game.

I think Stead has taken us as far as he can and a lot of his success can be attributed in part to the platform given to him by previous coach Mike Hesson.I’mnot sure who the next coach

At the time Scott left college the club was at a low ebb and knowing that Scott was going to play for Johnsonville, Rick was encouraged to get involved with theInitially,Club. he became involved as the organiser of the senior team in 2004 and then became Club Captain in 2007. These were challenging times for the

summer earlier this year, due to an elbow injury, only to heal up in time to take-up his lucrative IPL contract just weeks after the home season concluded.Heiswoefully out of form and like many of his fellow batters over the past week showed no intent to score or create pressure at the crease.

The possibility is there that either Shane Bond or Daniel Vettori could beWilliamson’sready. captaincy has gone backwards.Hehasbecome too passive and timid which could be partly Stead’s fault as well. Latham is an option in limited overs but I’d keep Williamson in test matches.

The men’s teams have been a huge focus of Rick’s from ensuring they have appropriate coaching and playing resources, to making sure the teams are well turned out and of course the best players with a focus on people who have played for the club as juniors.

STEAM INCORPORATED’S 50TH YEAR

My concern with Tom Latham, who is the next logical captain in all formats, is he doesn’t score big runs

He has been heavily involved in the junior section, including selecting roles. He has also been a champion for women’s and girls cricket in the club.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

There needs to be a changing of the guard within the Black Caps.

Club president Alan Isaac says Rick’s efforts have been instrumental in getting us to where we are today. Back-to-back Pearce Cup wins, a thriving junior base, an increasing number of female players and more T20 teams likely this season. Then there’s the facilities, arguably the best club rooms and playing and practice facilities in the region.

against the top teams.

In 2022, Steam Incorporated is celebrating its 50th year as an Incorporated Society. Please join with us in 2022 in a series of special anniversary events to commemorate the work that a small group of people embarked on in 1972, and what so many others have maintained through the last 50 years. We thank you for all of your continued support. Created in collaboration with our friends at Kapiti Signs, we will be running a special anniversary Tail Board on the back of all of our excursion trains this year.

Rick was involved as manager and coach of Kent and younger son Scott’s teams during the 1990s.

Rick Mudgway has been made a life member of Johnsonville Cricket Club for many years of tireless service to the club. While Rick grew up in Levin the Mudgway family were early settlers in Johnsonville, before there was a cricket club.Rick moved to Johnsonville in 1980 and started coming down to Alex Moore Park to watch the cricket in the early 1980sRick’s initial involvement with the club began when his oldest son Kent started playing junior cricket for the club in 1989.

Rick continued his involvement with cricket while the boys were at Wellington College, becoming Chairman of the Wellington College Cricket Club with Scott being Captain of the Ist X1.

Rick worked with Chairman Kevin Ramshaw, Dave Edgecombe and Julian Allen to get the club back on a proper footing.Hesucceeded Julian and for several years has been instrumental to the success the club has enjoyed.

For many years, Rick has been at the forefront of discussions around new clubrooms and has played a significant role in the development and completion of the new facilities at Alex Moore Park.

awful.Toooften, the Black Caps gained control in the field through the bowling of Trent Boult, then let the gameWilliamsondrift. and coach Gary Stead appear to lack a killer instinct especially against Australia - it’s like mental block.

The tactics during the series were

Williamson and Stead should be on hot-seat

Williamson has not been the same after he missed the entire home

Rick made Johnsonville Cricket Club life member

The series outcome should be seen as unacceptable, not because Australia won all the matches, but because we rolled-over so easily.

We look forward to seeing you sometime in ’22 to help make our 50th one to remember.

could be but we need a more attacking mindset for sure.
