Fire destroys home

A Coast Road house was completely destroyed after it caught on fire on 5 November.

The Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the blaze at around 1:15pm.

By the time the brigade arrived the two-story brick and timber house was “well alight,” Wainuiomata’s Chief Fire Officer Ewen Heron says.

Two crews from the Wainuiomata Brigade as well as crews from the Wainuiomata Bush Rural Fire Brigade raced to the scene.

When they arrived they were only able to use the water stored on the appliances, and it took some time to deploy pumping of water from a waterway.

The “lack of water hampered us a little,” CFO Heron says.

Rapid action saw the blaze contained to around 30 square metres.

The two brigades were already on the Coast Road, having been called to the earlier house fire, and that was fortunate because otherwise the wind could have caused the fire to spread rapdily, Rodney Hargraves, the Controller of the Wainuiomata Bush Fire Force says.

“If our guys weren’t already down the coast it could have been a different story.

“We were lucky we were already three quarters of the way down,” he says.

The cause of the bush fire was

not known.

Two days earlier the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade received a call from the owners of a house saying that they could smell smoke.

When the brigade arrived they found that there was a possible issue with the air conditioning unit in the roof cavity.

It had not caught alight however.

The brigade advised the resident to isolate the air conditioning unit, and to contact the unit’s suppliers.

People with air conditioning units should ensure that they are regularly serviced to reduce the risk of fire, as faulty units have caused fires in the past.

The fire was contained by around 2:50pm, although fire crews remained on scene for some hours after the blaze was extinguished.

Guy Fawkes day proved a busy day for both the Wainuiomata fire brigades.

They were also called to a bush fire near the Wainuiomata coast at 8:45pm on 5 November.

“I’m just delighted to be the Hutt South MP,” he says, adding that he was pleased to see his majority increase following the counting of special votes.

On election night Chris led Ginny Andersen, who was the Hutt South MP during the last Parliamentary term, by 1,094

votes.

However after the special votes were counted Chis’s lead had risen to 1,332 votes.

Following his election, Chris will be hiring an extra Wainuiomata-based staff member to help with constituency enquiries.

Once the new person comes on board his office at 126 Main Road, Homedale Village, will be open for longer hours.

“If you are keen on working for me and you are keen on helping people in Wainuiomata then put in an application for the job,”

Chris says.

The role is being advertised on Seek and on the Government Jobs website.

Chris entered Parliament in 2014 as a list MP. He then became the first person outside the Labour Party to win the Hutt South seat when he defeated Ginny Andersen by around 1,500 votes in 2017, a victory he repeated this year.

Born and raised in Lower Hutt, Chris won the award as 2006 Young Wellingtonian of the Year.

Marae’s bush restoration project

An initiative is under way to plant natives and remove exotic cherry blossom trees at the Wainuiomata Marae.

The team at the marae-based TRM training, led by Gary James, has begun the native bush restoration project.

Gary is a volunteer kaiako at the Whakamana Taiao programe at Wainuiomata marae and has helped the team at TRM Training to plan a native bush restoration project in the bush behind the marae.

He recently demonstrated for the students how to ringbark cherry blossom trees.

These trees are an exotic invasive species that take over from New Zealand native bush and there is a large number of them around the Wainuiomata Marae.

An Ambulance officer, Gary also runs Predator Free Wainuiomata, as

well as being a volunteer Kaiako at the Whakamana Taiao programe.

He will be setting up rat traps at the marae, with the assistance of the TRM students, to help with the native bush restoration project.

In another part of the native plant restoration programme the marae will be planting harakeke (flax).

The marae will be planting 52 different varieties of harakeke taken from the Renee Ormiston collection.

Rene began collecting varieties of harakeke in the early 1950s. She travelled throughout New Zealand visiting marae and recording information from elderly weavers on the names and uses of their special harakeke.

After food, harakeke (Phormium tenax) was the most essential commodity to early Māori.

Harakeke represented the whānau with rito (shoots) symbolising

children, surrounded protectively by the awhi rito (strong, mature leaves) and finally the outside leaves personifying the tĪūpuna (ancestors).

Harakeke was found in natural stands, but also cultivated by Māori weavers for the plants’ special properties. Locals battling overseas wildfires

Two Wainuiomata bush firefighters – Isaac Stead and Rodney Hargraves – continue to help battle raging wildfires overseas.

Isaac has just left for Australia, where scores of wildfires are raging in Queensland and New South Wales, many of them not contained.

Isaac left Wainuiomata on Sunday 5 November to help battle the blazes.

This is Isaacs second overseas deployment this year to fight wildfires.

He travelled to Canada in June on a five-week deployment to help in the fight against the flames.

Rodney, who is the Controller of the Wainuiomata Bush Voluntary Rural Fire Force, also spent five weeks in Canada battling the wildfires, leaving New Zealand on 16 July.

Last year Isaac and Rodney became the first New Zealanders to receive the Australian National Emergency Medal.

The two Wainuiomata volunteer firefighters received their medals for helping battle the massive bush fires that burned in New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory in early 2020.

Rodney and Isaac were presented their medals at the Australian High Commission in Wellington on 14 September 2022.

The two Wainuiomata firefighters had travelled from New Zealand to Cooma, in New South Wales, on 28 January last year on a 15-day deployment.

For Rodney that was his second time travelling to Australia to assist with fighting bush fires. In 2019 he travelled to Tasmania on a 15-day deployment.

Rodney has served the Wainuiomata Bush Voluntary Rural Fire Force for 24 years, while Isaac is also a long-serving member with 15 years’ service. Isaac is one of the two Deputy Controllers of the Force.

Last chance to book for Xmas event

People wanting to perform or to run a stall at this year’s Christmas in the Nui have until this Friday, 17 November, to make a booking.

Running from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 2 December at the Wainuiomata Town Centre, Christmas in the Nui is brought to town by Kokiri Marae Health and Social Services and TiHei Rangatahi, supported by Love Wainuiomata.

People can book stalls either to sell items or to promote their organisation.

Taking a stall at Christmas in the Nui offers a series of significant benefits.

Firstly it provides prime exposure, allowing stallholders to showcase their products or services to a wide and engaged audience.

Secondly, it provides networking opportunities, allowing people to

connect with fellow entrepreneurs and potential customers. That results in people building valuable relationships that can boost business.

Thirdly it provides stallholders with the opportunity to boost their sales and increase their bottom line.

“You don’t want to miss out on this fantastic opportunity,” the organiser says.

Local performers also still have the opportunity to register for Christmas in the Nui. Audi equipment will be provided on stage, and there are no fees for the performers.

Each set will be up to 15 minutes for single performers and up to 30 minutes for groups of two or more people.

“It would be great to have your Haka group, cultural group, individual or small groups that want

to participate in this event for our community,” the organisers says.

“We are strong on strengthening our community and we would love to have you be a part of it.

“We are so excited to have our community come together to celebrate and end the year on a high.

“With uncertain times we think it’s important to create an atmosphere that promotes whanaungatanga by creating a space for families to come together and celebrate the beauty within our community.”

Chrismas in the Nui “is going to be an epic day for our community,” says Anaru Ryall, Love Wainuiomata’s Co-ordinator.

Grey Power on a high Wainuiomata Grey Power held its last members meeting for the year on 25 October and Christmas Lunch on 22 November will see the club finish the year on a high.

Two members from the Hutt Valley Coffin Club were the guest speakers at the October meeting.

This group meets at the Naenae Men’s Shed each Tuesday to make their own coffins.

The group is for anyone interested in making their own coffins and they are looking for small groups to continue this project which gives people choice and options for affordable underground furniture.

They also assist with DIY funerals in an effort to reduce costs for families that may be struggling to afford a funeral service for their loved ones.

Group members need to contribute to the cost of materials to the 4-6 week project, and the

club usually meets once a week on a Tuesday from 2 to 4pm (other times may be available weekday afternoons).

Club members need to be responsible for transporting and storing their coffins once completed with a flat pack option available.

National Junior Ki o Rahi competition

Wainuiomata High School is currently hosting the 2023 National Junior KĪ o Rahi competition.

The event has attracted 22 teams, all from the North Island, and is being held at Wainuiomata High School.

Teams from as far north as Hamilton, Te Kuiti, Gisborne and Hastings have descended on Wainuiomata for the event.

The host school has entered two teams in the competition, which is for year 9 and 10 students, although area schools can include year 7 and 8 students in their teams.

The players were welcomed to the

event at a Powhiri held at the Wainuiomata Marae at 4pm on Tuesday 14 November.

The competition kicked off at 9:30am the next day with the first of the round robin matches. Each team will play four matches during the round robin play, with the last set of games scheduled for 2pm.

Post section play will begin at 9am on Thursday 16 November, culminating in the final at 12:30pm.

That will be followed by the prizegiving.

This is only the second year that the National Junior KĪ o Rahi competition has been held.

KĪ o Rahi is steadily growing at Wainuiomata High School.

The school’s mixed team won this year’s College Sport Wellington championships. The school also hosted this event.

This year its senior team finished seventh out of 40 teams in the competition.

Following the competition three Wainuiomata High School students were selected in the New Zealand secondary school team.

Reihana Te Rauna, Kahukura Te Rauna and Braddock Akuhata were named in the team.

Last year Wainuiomata High School finished fifth in the first National Junior KĪ o Rahi competition, and the team will be aiming to improve on that in this year’s event.

Ulalei Touch season under way Ulalei Vailele, the club’s senior touch football team, opened its season with a hattrick of wins at the Hutt Park touch football module.

Ulalei defeated Poro Peke 10-3 on 10 November, beat the Dolphins women 14-0 on 3 November and defeated Ice Cold 10-2 on 27 October.

The team, led by Wainuiomata rugby league legends Earl Va’a and James Patea includes a host of representative youth players in a range of sports including rugby, rugby league, netball, football and touch football.

“This is a very talented group and it’s great to have Ulalei to keep them together and moving during the off season,” James says.

“Ulalei is a special club and awesome to see it is still going strong after all these years. It means a lot to see my children now playing for the club.”

Meanwhile, in a busy summer for Ulalei Wainuiomata Sport, its inaugural primary school football competition kicked off at Wise Park this week with 24 teams entered;

Evening for prospective Rugby players

The Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club is inviting school leavers, prospective colts players and their whānau to its Pathway Programme on Thursday 16 November.

The club will welcome both females and males interested in Rugby to attend.

The event will be held at the Rugby clubrooms at William Jones Park and starts at 6pm. Dinner will be provided at the Pathway Programme.

This new programme is to help the next generation of players to transition into club Rugby and beyond.

The club has an excellent history since it was established in 1946.

This includes producing two All Blacks, Piri Weepu and Jonah Lomu.

Piri and Jonah are among five international players that have come out of the Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club.

Justine Va’a and Earl Va’a represented Manu Samoa, including appearances at two Rugby World Cup tournaments.

The hottest world for 125,000 years

This year is “virtually certain” to be the warmest in 125,000 years, European Union scientists said on 8 October.

The “Independent Herald” has decided to report this as it was surprised to note that this very important news was not being covered nationally by New Zealand’s media.

Climate change is fuelling increasingly destructive extremes.

New Zealand has seen this not just with the devestation caused

by Cyclone Gabrielle but also with the local occurence of destructive weather events and with landslides.

Last month smashed through the previous October temperature record, from 2019, by a massive margin, the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said.

This statement is contained in a Reuters news report by Kate Abnett, with the following details.

“The record was broken by 0.4 degrees Celsius, which is a huge margin,” said C3S Deputy Director Samantha Burgess, who described the October temperature anomaly as “very extreme”.

The heat is a result of continued greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, combined with the emergence this year of the El Nino weather pattern, which warms the surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Globally, the average surface air temperature in October was 1.7 degrees Celsius warmer than the same month in 1850-1900, which Copernicus defines as the pre-industrial period.

The record-breaking October means 2023 is now “virtually certain” to be the warmest year recorded, C3S said in a statement.

The previous record was 2016 – another El Nino year.

Copernicus’ dataset goes back to 1940.

“When we combine our data with the IPCC, then we can say that this is the warmest year for the last 125,000 years,” Ms Burgess said.

The longer-term data from the United Nations climate science panel IPCC includes readings from sources such as ice cores, tree rings and coral deposits.

The only other time before October a month breached the temperature record by such a large margin was in September 2023.

“September really, really surprised us,” Ms Burgess said.

“So after last month, it’s hard to determine whether we’re in a new climate state. But now records keep tumbling and they’re surprising me less than they did a month ago.”

“We must not let the devastating floods, wildfires, storms, and heatwaves seen this year become the new normal,” said Piers Forster, climate scientist at University of Leeds.

gas emissions over the next decade, we can halve the rate of warming,” he added.

Despite countries setting increasingly ambitious targets to gradually cut emissions, so far that has not happened. Global CO2 emissions hit a record high in 2022.

Cinderella tonight at WIS Have your say on District Plan

Wainuiomata Intermediate School’s production of “Cinderella” will be presented in the school hall tonight, 15 November, at 6pm.

The students in the cast have been practising hard for the past two terms.

They have been rehearsing tirelessly on their magical and hilarious take on

Cinderella.

As well as singing and dancing there will be a flatulent fairy godfather (a first for the Cinderella story).

Lower Hutt’s District Plan has received its first top-to-bottom overhaul in almost 20 years and Hutt City Council wants to hear from the community about whether it’s on track.

The District Plan is a rulebook for land use and development that sets the direction for future growth.

Feedback on the draft is open until 15 December and will be incorporated into a Proposed District Plan to be released for statutory consultation next year.

It's legally mandated for councils to routinely review their district plans, ensuring alignment with national directives on a spectrum of issues, including environmental hazards and urban intensification.

District Plan Review Committee Chair Brady Dyer said the District Plan was a key document for everything from managing the risks of natural hazards and protecting the environment, through to making

room for population and business growth.

"Regular updates including the recent Plan Change 56 have kept parts of the District Plan current, but this consultation on the full review is our proactive effort to engage the community extensively. This will shape the plan before the structured RMA consultation dictates the process next year," he said.

Mila’s Books has delivered 1,500 free copies of the book “A New Dawn” by Emeli Sione across Aotearoa, the publisher announced in its latest newsletter.

Wainuiomata resident Dahlia Malaeulu’s publishing firm Mila’s Books has delivered the book, which usually sells for $30, free to schools and Pasifika community groups in its “A New Dawn Across Aotearoa” project.

Earlier this year “A New Dawn” was announced as a New Zealand Children’s and Young Adult Book Awards Finalist.

This is the first time in the awards history that a book produced by an all Pasifika publishing team has been a finalist.

“A New Dawn”, written by Emeli Sione and illustrated by Darcy Soli, was one of five finalists in the Elsie Locke Award for Non-Fiction.

Released on the one-year anniversary of the New Zealand government apology for the dawn raids, the book shares Emeli’s dawn raid story of the real impact of this dark time in our history.
