Karori fashionista, and grandmother, Pip Tait is using her love of fashion to help others.

The former Wellington Girls High Home Science teacher holds high-end label fashion fundraising events at her home in Karori all in aid of her local church St Ninian’s.

Karen Walker, Trelisse Cooper, World, Verge, Caroline Sills were just some of the names available for five dollars a pop at her recent evening which raised more than $1,500.

Pip, who has an eye for style, begins accumulating her treasures months before the event often picking up deals in local Opp shops which she knows she can on-sell. Friends also pass on their pre-loved designer labels and bit by bit her stock grows.

Bric-a-brac including accessories, jewellery, books, candles, bags and other treasures are also on sale. Volunteers help with baking, snacks and drinks for the evening while local ladies snap up their bargains.

Pip, who has also held a ‘decorate a hat party’ loves dressing up. In earlier days when times were tough she learnt to be inventive with fashion and has sewed all her life.

“I love fashion, I like the way it makes you feel. One day I was wearing a tutu out and someone said you look fabulous.”

Pip has even been known to sell her own clothing when friends turn up on the doorstep looking for a particular item.

And prior to the approaching event, her husband Gordon started hiding his stuff in case

it got sold, recalled Pip, who is adamant she would never do such a thing!

She held her first fundraising fashion event in 2004 following on from the success of St Ninian’s Trash in Treasure garage sale. “I just thought I can do that!” She then decided to put the fashion spin on it. Pip is all about achieving her goal and raising as much money as she can for her much loved local church St Ninian’s.

“I love doing it and I try to involve people struggling in the community. The Karen Walker coat was a standout, a

friend sold it to me, then I gave it to my daughter, so everyone had a turn at the Karen Walker coat. I do know what people are looking for and what they like.”

Pip says she purposely prices items low at $5 each, some are brand new, so people are not spending ridiculous amounts of money and don’t have to make up their mind if they like it or not. Johnsonville’s community centre was lit up with lights and filled with around 80 people celebrating Diwali at a function organised by the New Zealand Malaysian Society over the weekend.

The New Zealand Malaysian Society is a multi-religion, multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi ethnic society and every year they organise Chinese New Year, Diwali president JC Chin says.

“Our events are aimed at gathering people together to socialise and network and for people to make new friends,’ he says.

“We can only run events when there is support and we do ten pin bowling for our members and anyone who is interested in joining the society can come along,’ JC Chin president of the society says.

Top accolade for Dan Harwood-Jones

Dentists say ‘Zero Carbon’ bipartisan approach needed

Onslow School student Dan Harwood-Jones is at the forefront of a campaign to raise political awareness among his fellow students and this week he was rewarded for his efforts.

Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor created the award for high schools in the area with the aim of recognising a student who creates political awareness.

“There is no better way to learn something than to see someone else doing it and we asked the school to identify someone in the school who is prepared to stand out and encourage others to be politically active.”

“It is aimed at getting the vote up regardless of political views.”

Onslow principal Sheena Millar says Dan’s work within the school made him an obvious choice for the award.

“He was picked by the school and is very active in the school community, he leads within the school ,he is the board rep for the students and he leads our student council. He was also part of the group that lead our celebration of success” she says.

“He has also been involved in communicating for the vote to be lowered to include 16 year-olds,” Greg says.

Dan was awarded with a copy of the penguin history of New Zealand and $100 voucher.

“This book is absolutely brilliant, a 101 of New Zealand History,” Greg says.

“It is probably the biggest agreed history.”

Along with Dan’s award a number of students were also rewarded for their efforts.

Wellington Police remind cyclists to secure bicycles following thefts Wellington Area Prevention Manager Inspector Wade Jennings says in the last few months Wellington Police have received numerous reports of bicycles stolen by opportunistic thieves throughout the CBD. Despite two youths being arrested and an ongoing investigation, bikes are still being

targeted, he says.

“Wellington Police know that Wellingtonians love to bike to work, as well as bike for leisure, and we want to prevent further thefts.

Importantly, we need your help,” Inspector Jennings says.

He says a number of the bikes stolen recently were unlocked,

or left unsecured in carports or on properties.

“Taking the time to secure your bike is the best way to prevent it being stolen.

We recommend a solid D-lock for securing your bike, as some smaller bike locks are easily cut through.

The New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA) says the approach on the ‘Zero Carbon’ Bill is needed for water fluoridation.

The Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Bill was passed last week with the support of all major political parties.

“We’ve seen the Health (Fluoridation of Drinking Water) Amendment Bill languish before Parliament. Wouldn’t it be great to see cross-party support for a really important public health measure,” said NZDA fluoride spokesperson Dr Rob Beaglehole.

Dr Beaglehole says the Bill, which will see decision-making powers for community water fluoridation shift from Councils to DHBs, was introduced under the then-National Government in 2016.

We’ve seen that bipartisan, in fact, multi-partisan, cooperation is possible for the future of our planet, so why not for the future of New Zealand’s dental health,” says Dr Beaglehole.

Boaties urged to stay safe on the water A ‘ N o E xc u s e s ’ c a m p a i g n w a s launched over the weekend by Greater Wellington Regional Council, in conjunction with Maritime NZ and Maritime Police, to promote safe boating this summer.

Greater Wellington Harbourmaster Grant Nalder says the campaign targets some basic boating rules including carrying and wearing lifejackets, and safe speed.

Grant says the main issues are people going too fast, not wearing their life jackets or paddle craft without a means of communication – making it difficult for them to raise the alarm if they get into trouble.

“This is disappointing because messaging around the importance of wearing life jackets has been consistent for a long time. Wearing a life jacket is an absolute basic for staying safe on the water.

Grant says councils will be taking action against boaties who break lifejacket and speed rules, including infringement notices of up to $200.

inbrief news Footpath ban A petition to Government to have escooters and other personal transport devices banned from New Zealand footpaths has been launched.

A spokesperson for a coalition of 14 organisations, including Grey Power and Alzheimers NZ, says the planned Accessible Streets regulatory package seems to permanently allow personal transport like e-scooters on footpaths.

The spokesperson says that for many people on foot, those in pushchairs and wheelchairs, and those who have difficulty walking, hearing, seeing or with mental processing, using the footpath is their main connection to their community.

The petition, which can be found on the parliamentary website, will be presented to Government in early December.

Gun amnesty ending Police Minister Stuart Nash is reminding gun owners that the Friday December 20 deadline for gun owners’ firearms amnesty and buyback will be enforced.

“Don’t wait,” he advises, saying that the clock is ticking on the last opportunity to receive payment for prohibited firearms and parts, or to hand over unwanted or unlawful guns without fear of prosecution.

He says that more than 19,000 people have picked up $62 million in payments, but if people don’t hand in the other prohibited firearms and parts by the non-negotiable deadline, they will get no money and will face up to five years in prison and the loss of their firearms licence.

Twilight Gala for Kelburn

For the first time in seven years this weekend Kelburn School will trot out the bunting and line up the stalls for a twilight gala fundraiser.

Over the last few weeks students, their families, teachers and the school’s board of trustees have been busy gathering and making in order for the event to be a success.

Principal Andrew Bird says the school has held other fundraising activities over the years but this is the first gala in seven years.

“This is the first twilight gala we have ever held, we have had other events for everyone to come together and a twilight event seems like a good idea as it is after sport and more people are available to come.”

Teacher Nicola Holt says the school held an evening event One Wild Night a while ago which was an auction. Over the years the board has done different things.

“We thought the twilight gala would also be an enjoyable event for the children as well,” says Nicola Holt.

Andrew says whatever is raised will be well spent as there are a few areas that need attention.

“We are looking at raising funds for outside particularly shade, we have a nice brand

new school which is a real treat but we have to buy things like shade and outdoor seating,” Andrew says.

“There are always things to buy when you have a school and a lot of things to keep on

top of.”

“The other thing we are mindful of in addition to raising money is the importance of bringing the community together and that’s the kind of feel we want to have,” he says.

1918 influenza memorial unveiled A memorial plaque remembering the estimated 9000 New Zealanders who died in the 1918 global influenza pandemic was unveiled at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park this week.

Jacinda Ardern, the memorial plaque also acknowledges the service and sacrifice of the health professionals and large numbers of volunteers who cared for the sick, helping to save lives while risking their own.

between Manat Taonga and the Ministry of Health, the memorial plaque is situated in front of the Queen Elizabeth II Pukeahu Education Centre.

“This location was selected for its association with the Fi rst World Wa r a nd its proximity to other sites connected with the pandemic and specifically Pacific Island countries. The Pacific Islands Memorial is set to be unveiled on the adjacent terrace in 2020.

“The closeness of these two memorials recognises the devastating impact of

influenza in the Pacific and particularly in Samoa,” Bernadette Cavanagh said.

Designed by Neil Pardington and Wraight & Associates, the memorial features a graphic representation of the scale of the pandemic’s impact across New Zealand regions from north to south.

The plaque’s zinc appearance recalls the zinc sulphate inhalation sprayers used to treat people during the pandemic. The stencilled form of the text references the labelling on medical supply crates.

New nature school in Crofton Downs Everyone Out, a not for profit social enterprise founded by local Wilton mum Rachel Prier has been so successful she is about to launch a new venture, Everyone Out Nature School.

Rachel is keen to get more kiwi kids outside in nature and with previous Everyone Out family events in Wellington parks and reserves she encouraged tamariki and their whanau to get out and enjoy the amazing green spaces Wellington has on offer.

Since 2018 the popular holiday programme has run in Crofton Downs and Rachel says one parent told her, her children couldn’t get enough of it.

“Her children absolutely loved it. They loved toasting marshmallows, going in the steam, the waterside, making bow and arrows, all of it,” she says.

Rachel says from February 2020 Everyone Out will provide Wellington primary school aged children with the opportunity to attend a one day a week nature based school in Crofton Downs.

A primary purpose of Everyone Out Nature School is to provide children authentic learning to build life skills such as; collaboration, problem solving, risk assessment, resilience, confidence, determination, creativity, imagination, empathy and respect for themselves, others and the environment.

Children’s natural enthusiasm and curiosity will have the chance to thrive.

A range of child-led experiences in the natural learning environment will constantly challenge and extend them. By providing layered learning experiences the educators support tamariki development and help achieve self-selected goals, she says.

St Brigid’s School Fair

Don’t let the rain put you off! St Brigid’s School Fair planned for any eventuality.

Rain or shine, it would still go ahead on 10 November.

It did rain and the fair did go ahead, well supported by the local community.

The large sunshade in the forecourt served well for sheltering from the rain and umbrellas of all shapes and sizes abounded. Small marquees also provided shelter for stalls while others continued their activities inside.

The fire-fighting team was

there, ready to answer questions and show people around their big red fire engine. Noone seemed to mind the rain and the banter made it clear that everyone was having a good time.

Games, face-painting and a disco were very popular with the youngsters, as were the toy and book stalls.

There was also plenty of food for all tastes and ages so the 2019 St Brigid’s School Fair was a great success and a credit to its organisers and volunteers, who showed what can be done with careful planning

Magical tasty tarts, Queen of Hearts and Jabberwocky threats are all part of the crazy pantomime adventure at Circa.

And Johnsonville’s Natasha McAlister and Gavin Rutherford are right amongst the shenanigans.

It’s not the first time Natasha has been involved in the show having played the mad hatter in a performance in London three years ago.

“I auditioned for Alice and they decided I was their mad hatter,” she says.

“It’s a lot of fun being a very different character and I have had to go from being very silly on stage to being quite straight on stage and being the hero,”

she says.

Gavin is well known for a myriad of roles and in this season he takes on the role of Dame.

“It’s a great show for audience participation, we want them to boo the bad guys and cheer the good guys,” he says.

“We have elements where everybody can shout on stage and we request that they must do it and it is a show for families and the kids say the funniest things and it has become a wonderful tradition for Wellington and Circa.”

The show will run from the 16th November to 22nd December and from 2nd to 11th of January 2020.

Karori Lions Super Garden Trail The Karori Lions are capping a very busy and successful 50th Anniversary Year with their popular biennial Super Garden Trail in Karori, taking place on Saturday and Sunday, 23 & 24 November.

The Garden Trail Convenor, Sharmini Sivanantham says that the 12 gardens on view display a range of flora and other attributes that will delight the public. Once again, entry to ZEALANDIA is included in the price of the ticket. There are a number

of “new” gardens, and a few of the old favourites have been included.

She says that the ticket price is very competitive at $25, and covers both days, with free entry to children under 16 if accompanied by an adult.

An innovation this year is the inclusion of a kindergarten, where visitors can see an eco-friendly environment through the eyes of a child. Great for parents and grandparents with young ones.

The club has established a dedicated

website for the garden trail, and was surprised to find that no-one else in the world had registered www. supergardentrail.com.

Karori Lions celebrated 50 years of service to the community in September with a Saturday night banquet at the Karori Bridge Club, followed by a Sunday brunch at One Fat Bird. The guest speaker was the well known “father” of the Zealandia eco-sanctuary, Jim Lynch, QSM. The 50 years of service to the community

has seen approximately one million dollars raised and distributed to support health, conservation, youth, education and community assets. In addition, many thousands of hours have gone into making a difference for individuals, the environment, and the community at large. There have been a great many beneficiaries, and this year one of the favourites, the Wellington Free Ambulance, is the major beneficiary of the garden trail. As with all other Lions Clubs,

all money received from the public, after direct costs, is returned to the community.

Coming up early next year - the family friendly Karori Karnival 2020 takes place on Sunday 16th February at Ben Burn Park, Karori.

As usual there will be great on-stage entertainment, rides for kids, and a wide range of food and craft stalls.

New artwork for Central Library celebrates life of poet and librarian J.C. Sturm An artwork that celebrates the life of J.C. Sturm, also known as Jacquie Baxter, is being installed on a new hoarding that is being erected around the Central Library on Victoria Street.

The new artwork will provide vibrancy to the area as we work through the long term future of the building and Te Ngakau — Civic Precinct.

Wellington City Council has commissioned Mata Aho, a collective of Maori women artists, to design the artwork.

“In collaboration with Andre Te Hira, we’ve created an artwork titled ‘And only sea’, that celebrates the civic and literary work of J.C. Sturm. We chose to render one of

Sturm’s poems on the building site for a new library (published 1996), in an 80 metre, three colour vinyl that will be adhered to the hoarding.

The poem references the construction of the Central Library and also Wellington city’s land reclamation where Civic Square was once underwater,” Mata Aho Collective says.

Sturm worked as a librarian at the Central Library. She was one of the first Maori women to complete an undergraduate degree, the first Maori woman to attain an MA in Philosophy, and also one of the first Maori women to appear in print.

“We’re delighted to celebrate

the civic and literary work of J.C. Sturm, who worked as a librarian at the Central Library for over 20 years,” Libraries and Community Spaces Manager, Laurinda Thomas says.

“The artwork has been commissioned to celebrate the civic location and literary connection, and gives us an opportunity to tell a story about the history of the land and people. The design connects to the area’s Maori heritage and geography, and celebrates the importance of libraries to our cities as places of learning, refuge and relaxation.

“The artwork will be showcased on the Victoria Street section of new ply hoarding, which is

being constructed around the Central Library, continuing to provide a clear, secure and safe boundary. It will enliven the area and clearly signal that Te Ngakau is open and the waterfront is still accessible.”

Construction of the hoarding starts next week and is expected to take two weeks – once completed the artwork will be installed. It is anticipated that the artwork will be fully

in place by early-December – weather permitting.

During the construction period pedestrian access will be restricted. On-site signage will be in place to direct people. The Council asks people walking and cycling in the area to take extra care as the work takes place. We also thank local residents and businesses for their patience while this work is done.

Monika has always sung and has always been in a choir. She says the first thing she does when she goes to a new place is seek out a choir.

“It is a community thing and the people are all likeminded,” she says.

Now 68 years-old Monika is still passionate to learn and started learning the fiddle three years ago.

“It hurt and my body doesn’t like it but its great fun.”

Along with her voice as her main instrument she has also learnt to play the piano and the recorder.

“My partner is Bernard Wells and he is the recorder man in New Zealand and he is teaching me and I am teaching him German,” she says.

Her professional career is as a linguist and translator.

“My other big interest is in languages and after school I became a translator and interpreter in German and Russian, so I am a professional applied linguist,” Monika says.

EYE ON CRIME were given a messy search with jewellery targeted. An inventory of family jewellery is being made. A Suzuki motorbike, parked on the front porch of a house in Rangoon Street was stolen. The kitchen window of a house in Mandalay Terrace was smashed during the night which the occupants were in bed.

They investigated but no entry gained.

The garage of a house in Jubilee Road was broken into when offenders cut the securing padlock. Items in the garage were moved around but nothing seems to have been taken. A house in Waru Street under renovation was entered but no sign of force having been used. Multiple boxes of tools were stolen.

In Ngaio a silver Audi stationwagon parked in the driveway and close to the house in Kenya Street was stolen. It was located by Police in Cannons Creek, Porirua.

In Churton Park a silver Mitsubishi Lancer saloon parked during the morning outside a house in Lakewood Avenue was entered via a smashed left rear quarterlight window. A wallet containing a bank card, a restricted driving licence, a student ID and a community service card was stolen.

A white BMW stationwagon parked overnight in Cambrian Street was broken into through a left rear quarterlight window. Sun glasses and a vehicle log book were stolen. A white Mitsubishi Galant saloon was entered through a smashed left rear quarterlight window. Nothing appears to be missing but the vehicle will not start now.

A silver Mitsubishi Lancer saloon parked overnight on the street in Churton Drive had both quarterlight windows damaged in gaining access. A wallet containing a driver’s licence, and bank and loyalty cards was stolen. The wallet was found at Churton Park School but the bank card and drivers licence are still missing. A green Toyota Starlet saloon parked overnight on the street in Amesbury Drive was entered through a smashed passenger side window.

Nothing was stolen but an attempt was made to steal the battery which was found flat.

A silver Suzuki Alto hatchback parked on the street overnight in Westchester Drive was entered through a smashed left rear quarterlight window. The vehicle was searched and the ignition tampered with in an attempt to start it.

Another vehicle alongside it, a silver Suzuki Aqua hatchback, also owned by the same person, was given similar treatment but the attempt to steal both vehicles was abandoned.

A water reservoir room in Prestwich Drive was broken into. The door lock was cut off and the metal door forced inward.

A vehicle battery was stolen.

In Johnsonville an attempt was made to break into a black Volkswagen Touareg stationwagon parked locked on the street during the night in Monowai Road by tampering with the left rear quarterlight window. No entry gained and nothing stolen.

The garage under a house in Cortina Avenue was entered through an open door and a mountain bike and helmet were stolen. A silver Toyota Corolla hatchback parked during the day in Gothic Street was broken into via a smashed right rear quarterlight window.

The vehicle was given a messy search but nothing reported stolen. Also in Gothic Street a blue Toyota Vitz hatchback had its left rear quarterlight window smashed to gain entry.

The vehicle was given a rummage search but nothing stolen. A silver BMW Touring stationwagon had its left rear quarterlight window smashed while parked during the day at the rear of a shop in Johnsonville Road. No entry gained. A grey Mazda Demio hatchback parked during the day in the railway station car park had its right rear quarterlight window smashed to gain entry.

Earphones and sports items were stolen.

A purple Mazda Verisa hatchback parked during the night in Petherick Street had its left rear quarterlight window smashed. The vehicle was entered and search but nothing reported stolen. The wooden back door of a shop in Johnsonville Road was damaged when an attempt was made to force it open.

No entry gained.

In Newlands a blue Mazda Axela hatchback parked locked overnight in Salford Street was found by the owner to be supported by two jacks. The two rear wheels had been stolen.

The bathroom window of a property in Black Rock Road was forced open to give access into the house. A TV, a PS4 with cords and controllers, an Xbox and controller, children’s clothing and a not yet connected security camera were stolen.

Five garden ornaments were stolen from a garden in Spenmoor Street. A smashed right rear quarterlight window gave access to a black Mazda Premacy stationwagon parked overnight in Helston Road. Sunglasses and a pipe wrench were stolen.

A white Mitsubishi Lancer stationwagon parked in Robert Street had its right rear quarterlight window smashed, no entry gained.

In Khandallah a house in Rangoon Street was broken into. Access was gained by smashing a lead light window in the front door and reaching through to unlock the door. The alarm had been set before the owner left the house but the security company monitoring the alarm has not reported any break in. Two bedrooms

Time for ABs to get Razor’s edge A week or two removed from the Rugby World Cup, it is evident change is in the air.

The All Blacks need a fresh lick of paint and Scott Robertson is the man who is much needed to kick-start the stalling team.

Ian Foster, an assistant under Steve Hansen for the past four years, is, at least in the public’s eye, too closely associated with

the old regime.

Yes, in previous years that was a successful one but it is also an era which felt like it came to an end with that semifinal loss to England.

To pick Foster, who had no silverware success of note as Chiefs head coach, may look like the NZRU is flogging a dead horse.

Robertson has won three Super

Rugby titles with the Crusaders, yes the PC brigade still let us call them that for now, a franchise with excellent players but one which had grown a reputation for not winning the big games until his arrival.

Is he unproven? Certainly at international level and the last time the All Blacks tried that with John Mitchell more than 15 years ago it

failed in spectacular fashion.

While the public may see Robertson’s selection as a no-brainer, it would in many respects be a bold one from the rugby brains of this country.

Robertson, an above average provincial player who had limited chances in the black jersey, seems to have a way of getting the most out of the young players.

Since the age of seven Onslow student Jordan Keene has been involved in the game of bowls and his perseverance has paid off.

Recently Jordan was awarded the College Sport Wellington Bowls sports person of the year.

Bowls is definitely in the blood for Jordan with his parents fully involved at various levels.

“Both my mum and dad have played for the North and South Island teams in indoor bowls and my mum is in the reserves for the New Zealand team at the moment and my Aunty Sandra Keith plays for New Zealand.”

“My biological father has played outdoor for the New

Zealand team and once for the indoor team. He is a very good outdoor bowler and the bowls I use are his ones as outdoor bowls aren’t cheap to buy,” he says.

As a young lad Jordan attended a lot of games while his mum was playing and was encouraged to have a go and enjoyed it and has never looked back.

“I enjoy the precise challenge of the game and with indoor bowls the difference between winning is millimetres and in an outdoor game if you can get within a foot then that’s pretty good,” he says.

“What makes it for me is the competition and the people you meet. All of them are lovely people and among the young

Onslow table tennis student awarded Hui Ling Vong has represented New Zealand in table tennis in numerous international events and her hard work and dedication has been recognised with an individual code award.

Hui has been awarded Wellington College Sport table tennis player of the year 2019.

One of Hui’s most noticeable events was representing the New Zealand women’s team in the 2016 ITTF World Team Championships.

She has also represented Oceania in the 2016 World Cadet Challenge, fi nishing 16th in the girl’s singles and attended the Buenos Aires 2018 youth Olympic games at the age of 17.

She started playing table tennis at the age of 9 and was 12 when selected to represent New Zealand in the 2013 World Hopes Challenge.

“This was my first real taste of international competition that got me hooked on table tennis,” she says.

“After the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) World Hopes Challenge, I whole-heartedly decided to play table tennis and started to play at a national and international level.

He’s got the best out of Sevu Reece, Jack Goodhue and Bryn Hall while rejuvenating guys like Sam Whitelock and Joe Moody.

It is time for the rugby brass to be bold, accept a new era is upon us and go in a slightly new direction.

Robertson represents that.

Jordan is keen to do the best he can in the sport and would be easily placed among the top ten juniors in the country.

“There are a lot of juniors out there who are better than me but everyone is beatable,” he says.

And he has a great approach to beating an opponent.

“If you show up on the day and you’re not feeling it and you’re not into the game then it will have an effect on your performance,” Jordan says.

‘If you don’t show up on the day having the readiness to compete and give it your all then you’re not going to beat anyone,” Jordan says.

Jordan says the award was a complete surprise.
