Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) Continued from page 1 Hutt Hospital currently has 13 children with RSV or respiratory-type illness.

Wainuiomata man David Smith wants all parents to be aware of RSV and to take precautions to prevent the infection.

David worked in childcare for 30 years and published an in-depth book, Suffer the Little Children, in 2014 and says he is passionate about the health of babies and knows what a great risk RSV is in childcare centres.

He says RSV is currently rife in Daycare facilities and older

siblings can give it to any babies at home.

“Knowing the conditions in daycare like I do and the number of parents who don’t keep sick children home I am extremely concerned for places like Wainui where often children are not always in good health for a start,” David says.

The Hutt District Health Board says while RSV primarily affects children, it is also common for adults to display symptoms of RSV and other respiratory-type illnesses. Adults generally tend to get milder symptoms, although it can cause more severe

illness in adults with underlying lung disease or weakened immune systems.

RSV symptoms include a runny nose, decrease in appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever (often mild) and/or wheeze. In some cases, it can cause more serious illness such as bronchiolitis (narrowing of airways in infants) and pneumonia. Very young infants (especially premature babies and those exposed to smoking), older adults, and those with chronic medical conditions are more at risk.

If you have RSV-like symptoms and are concerned or

are getting worse, you should contact your GP or Healthline (0800 611 116) for assessment and advice.

Early medical advice is especially important for those with underlying medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart and lung disease and some autoimmune diseases, or for severely overweight people and pregnant women.

Do not return to childcare, school or work until symptoms have resolved. Anyone who is unwell should stay at home until 24 hours after symptoms have stopped and they are well.

Defending fantastic unorthodox through court play, Premier champions Ulalei Pua showed to take a comfortable 56-37 win. Ulalei their intent for the second round with a Pua are currently placed 1st equal with the strong win against UHMU 1. The first Wellington Men’s and NNCU Blue teams.

Other results: quarter was tight with both teams going Premier 1 - Ulalei Aute lost to Wellington for every loose ball and putting pressure on the passer. inbrief news An alternative to drink driving New Zealand Police have launched a new drink driving campaign encouraging drivers to consider other options to getting behind the wheel after drinking.

The premise of the new drink driving campaign from Police is about getting people’s attention before they start drinking, and reminding them that there is always an alternative to drink driving.

The campaign includes messaging at over 250 bottle stores across the country, saying things like ‘get a ride from your mate’s mum’, ‘take advantage of your mate’s ‘sober month’ tonight’, ‘spill your life story in a taxi’, and suggesting walking home instead of driving.

The message is simple - plan how you will end your night before you begin your night.

By Gerald Rillstone Kokiri Marae Pataka Kai has won the Supreme Award at the Hutt City Council Community and Civic Honours awards.

The Volunteer Awards were hosted in the Lower Hutt Town Hall with this years awards extra special as last years awards were cancelled due to COVID. The Awards had two aspects, the Community Awards and Civic Honours.

The Community Awards are given to volunteer organisations who have made a significant contribution to Lower Hutt and this year was the most nominations Hutt City Council have received.

They are part of the wider Wellington Airport Community

Awards and with Kokiri Marae Pataka Kai taking out the supreme winner award they will now go on to represent Lower Hutt at the regional awards.

Ken Laban was also awarded a Civic Honour for “Community Service, Cultural Affairs, and Youth Activities” in recognition of his service advancing the development of Maori and Pasifika young people through sporting and community programmes, and leading the annual Hutt Valley Sports Awards.

Hutt City Mayor Campbell Barry says “Volunteers are the people behind our sports teams, food banks, and clean-up groups, and they simply wouldn’t be able to function without them.”

Civic Honours are the highest award the Council can confer to an individual, who has made a contribution to the community in a voluntary space. They are given in respect of their “Voluntary Community Service” to the city.

They are nominated by members of the public and Council then meets to decide who should receive an award.

Kokiri Marae – Pataka Kai was established during last years’ COVID lockdown, providing food parcels and essentials for

those in need around Lower Hutt. They offer contactless delivery service and all at zero cost to the recipients. Pataka Kai have a no questions asked Kaupapa and will help anyone in need regardless of ethnicity and background.

The group is 100 percent volunteer run and it is these volunteers who maintain the garden, pack up boxes, sew garments and curtains for those who need these services. They also run a little second hand shop to help supplement some of the cost.

There is also an education arm to their offering running classes for whanau teaching them how to make their own items like planter boxes and providing the seeds to help them grow their own food.

Metlink tenders for airport service Metlink welcomed the regional council’s decision to establish an express bus service between the Railway Station and the Airport, and is now preparing to go out to tender for an operator to service the new route.

The new bus service will be an integral part of the Metlink network with real time information tracking, on-board announcements, Metlink ticketing as well as featuring on the Metlink app and website.

A unit to create the service was established through the Greater Wellington Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP) 2021-2031, which was formally adopted at yesterday’s Council meeting.

Greater Wellington Transport Chair Roger Blakeley says the new service aligns with the community’s clear support for a greener, more sustainable and customer-friendly public transport network.

Hutt average house price nears $1 million News that the average house value in Lower Hutt is now $968,000, up an astonishing 38 per cent in the last twelve months alone, is deeply troubling, National List MP based in Hutt South Chris Bishop says.

“When I first became an MP, not even seven years ago, it was possible to buy a good three bedroomed house in Naenae or Wainuiomata for under $300,000. Now the aver-

age house in the Hutt is nearly a million dollars.

“This isn’t the future I want for our city. High house prices have driven increased rents, a big social housing waiting list, and real homelessness in our city. Here are the facts: Lower Hutt mean rents have risen from $361 per week in October 2017 to $529 per week in April

2021 – a rise of $170 per week in three and a half years The social housing waitlist in Lower Hutt is at near-record levels, with 573 clients on the waitlist as at 31 March 2021 (an increase from 198 in September 2017) $21 million has been spent on emergency housing grants (which pay for people to stay in motels) since they began in December 2017.

“In my role as a MP I see the effects of our housing crisis every day. It’s time for some plain speaking about the crisis facing our city.

Kids are growing up in motels.

People are sleeping rough. And first home buyers are locked out of a housing market that looks stacked against them.

Council should be urgently starting the investigatory work on a

second access road from north Wainuiomata through to Naenae or Whites Line East, he says, as this will be required as part of the rezoning of the rural land and would help increase resilience for Wainuiomata.

“The Hutt hasn’t had a new suburb since the 1980s and the effects can be seen on housing in our city today.”

Wrestling Championship on the Line By: Gerald Rillstone New Zealand’s All Star Wrestling Championship will be up for grabs when Valiant Pro Wrestling returns to Wainuiomata on Saturday, 17 July for ‘Level Up: Stage Two’.

Lower Hutt’s own NIWA, captured the title on May 22, by outlasting 19 other competitors in an ‘over the top’ match to become the inaugural The New Zealand All Star Wrestling Champion. The win capped a historic run from fan favourite NIWA who has been undefeated at Valiant Pro Wrestling since returning to New Zealand.

Having captured the title,

NIWA will now have to hold on to it, which will be no easy feat when he faces Auckland’s ‘Te Tahi’ Vinny Dunn.

Dunn is a decorated veteran who has held multiple titles over his 16-year wrestling career and has also wrestled internationally with a stint in the United States and is one of the foremost Kiwi wrestlers of the modern era.

Both men have been ranked at one point on the prestigious PWI 500 list of the best pro wrestlers in the world.

“I am legitimately excited about this matchup,” says Valiant Pro ring announcer Danny Sol. “NIWA is a pure powerhouse with no quit in him, but Vinny

Dunn is also a tank and very crafty. I’ve seen a lot of big main events in my days, but this one is going to be fireworks.”

Level Up: Stage Two will also feature a card of talented competitors from around New Zealand, including two notable matchups of big men.

“The big guys are something special to behold in wrestling,” Danny Sol says. “It’s like watching King Kong battle Godzilla.

There actually aren’t that many really big guys around these days, but we have four of the best big men in New Zealand competing at Level Up: Stage Two.” Massive Ben Mana of Whan-

ganui (160kg) will take on the mighty Chaulky Murdoch (140kg) from Christchurch while local giant Axl Stirling (140kg) faces the largest man in New Zealand wrestling, Adam Avalanche of Dunedin (207kg).

“Let’s just hope the ring can survive the impact when these big boys get slammed to the mat. People will be reporting seismic activity across the North Island!”

Group 3 vaccinations in the Hutt Valley We are now vaccinating Group 3. This group includes:

If you are part of this group you will receive an invite to book your vaccination appointment by the end of July.

Group 3 is very large – approximately 200,000 people in the greater Wellington region. To make things run smoothly, we are inviting people in several stages based on risk and equity factors.

Where we are vaccinating We have Community Vaccination Centres in Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt. There are also two Maori-led clinics in Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata.

Vaccinations are by appointment only, and no walk-in spots are available.

We have already vaccinated staff and patients of aged residential care facilities in Hutt Valley, and many retirement villages will be offering on-site vaccination for their residents in the coming weeks.

What you should do Until you receive an invite, you do not need to do anything. When you are invited, please book your appointment at a time that works for you. If you work elsewhere in our region, such as Wellington, and would prefer to be vaccinated there, please let the booking team know when you talk to them.

Later this month, we will provide information on what to do if you are in Group 3 and you haven’t been invited.

If you don’t have a medical centre Now is a great time to enrol with a local medical centre if you don’t have one already. Then, when it is your turn, they will be able to make sure you are invited.

Medical Centres are not vaccinating and cannot make a booking for you. Please do not call them as we need to keep their phone lines free for people who are unwell and need an appointment.

Hutt Fest 2021 By: Gerald Rillstone Hutt Fest 2021 saw students from Primary, Intermediate and Secondary Schools across the region come

together and celebrate their Pasifika heritage through song and dance.

They performed to sold out crowds at the Walter Nash Stadium over two nights of song and dance.

We are looking at flooding in Wainuiomata Mariya Lucas, Ellie Briggs, Leilani Aranga on stage for the 2021 Hutt Fest.

Greater Wellington Regional Council, Hutt City Council and Wellington Water are working on two flood mapping projects in Wainuiomata.

These projects represent the most comprehensive flood hazard mapping in the area’s history. We want to share with you the finalised stormwater maps for the Wainuiomata urban area and to collect information from your experiences of flooding from the Wainuiomata River.

Roses in Winter

GARDENING THIS WEEK Gardening roses during winter: By Wally Richards Roses can be lost when their roots are not kept moist during and after transplanting.

If you buy roses that are not bagged up or in containers,then you should submerge their roots into a bucket of water as soon as you get them home.

Leave them in the bucket for a day and then plant.

If you cannot plant them at that time, then heel them into a patch of garden where the soil is moist to wet.

If the roses are in a bag or container ensure that the mix is kept nice and moist till you lift them out of the container and plant them. It is fatal if the roots of roses dry out for any length of time.

I had a phone call from a gardener during the week asking about spray because he purchased four new roses recently and after planting they started to leaf up and then one fizzed and died.

He was worried that the other three might die also.

I told him the one that died was already dead when he purchased it.

There was sufficient sap in the plant to produce some growth but as the roots were dead the growth could not be sustained.

Likely not the fault of the garden shop as long as they had kept the roots moist.

Most likely when the grower lifted the roses out of the field they were growing in and the roots were allowed to dry out and thus good bye rose.

If this happens to you with new roses or fruit trees take them back to the shop for a replacement.

The shop will be compensated by the grower so no loss to all concerned.

When things go wrong too many gardeners that are not in the Know blame themselves for the losses when it maybe not their fault at all.

I have heard that sometimes the rose

can survive if soaked for a day in a tub of water then buried deep with just the tips of the canes showing above ground.

I dont know if it works but an old nurseryman told me years ago.

If you buy a deciduous tree and it flowers and maybe comes into leaf then dies that often means it was also dead when you purchased as the roots had been allowed to dry out after lifting.

Here is an interesting thing; if you have a fruit or ornamental deciduous tree that is currently dormant and you are opening it up by removing some branches.

Take the removed branches and stick them in the ground and later on they will flower as there is sufficient sap to open the dormant buds.

Even better put into a bucket of water to make it happen.

Anyway back to planting roses..(Or fruit trees and berry fruit) When you dig a hole to plant a rose, before planting, fill the hole with water and leave till most of this water drains away.

Sub soil maybe dry even if the top soil is moist and we need to ensure that the soil in the area of the roots is nice and wet.

Likewise for the first year of the rose’s life, in its new location, the rose must have adequate moisture in the root zone.

You may like to cut the bottom off a plastic cordial bottle and plant it so the neck of the bottle is in the root zone.

This allows you to water the roots when the top soil is very dry.

Otherwise a new rose will need about a bucket of water a day during drought times or when the soil moisture level becomes low.

What to put in the planting hole of your new plants?

My choice is the following, sheep manure pellets and or Bio Boost, a good sprinkling of Wallys Unlocking your Soil, a little BioPhos and some Wallys Neem tree Powder.

That is ample food, minerals and protection from soil insects.

New roses have not been pruned, they have been cut back to make transporting easier.

Normally about 4-6 weeks after planting a new rose you would do the final pruning.

The first problem the roses will face in the new season is attacks of aphids on the new shoots and buds.

At the first sign spray with Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil with Wallys Super Pyrethrum added and repeat when new aphids come along.

A few gardeners have told the writer that they place Wallys Neem Tree Granules in the root zone of their roses and found that by refreshing the granules about every 6 weeks that they did not have much of an aphid problem each spring.

You may like to try this yourself and if it works for you it will reduce or eliminate the need of a spray program.

Another tip is when you plant your new roses/fruit trees spray with Potassium permanganate at quarter a teaspoon per litre of water with 1 mil of Raingard added to each litre.

The whole plant and the surrounding soil should be sprayed.

Potassium permanganate being an oxidizing agent kills diseases very efficiently and can be used at any time during the season.

I now prefer this now rather than using Lime Sulphur for disease control.

At the first sign of black spot, rust or other leaf diseases later on spray with the same.

At the request of rangatira (community leaders) around the country, Multicultural New Zealand is holding an urgent national hui this week to listen to the concerns around some of the Covid-19 related immigration policies causing mental health issues and family separation.

Last week Immigration New Zealand announced that they were

cancelling visitor visas applied for including partners of people living in New Zealand.

This follows a decision in 2019

by INZ to grant a visitor visa for individuals in culturally arranged marriages instead of a partnership visa.

In June 2021 Multicultural New Zealand put out a nationwide

survey to gain perspective on the impacts of travel bans and family separation. The data showed critical impacts on mental health and functionality.

Multicultural New Zealand is hosting a national zoom conference this Friday with community leaders from around the motu. MPs and press are invited.

Rosco deserves to declare on his terms Ross Taylor deserves to leave international cricket on his terms.

Even the biggest fan of the 37-year-old would be hard-pressed to ignore a slight regression in the veteran’s play over the past 18 months.

However, he still offers plenty to a group of Black Caps who are thriving.

He has scored more than 18,000 international runs in all formats

since debuting as the next big thing in New Zealand cricket in 2006.

Despite the weight of runs, I doubt many meant more than the unbeaten 47 he got in the World Test Championship final last month.

The steady hand, along with captain Kane Williamson proved he still had the mental ability to grind through tough periods and put away the bad ball.

Unfairly, there was too much

chatter post-match about Taylor’s future.

The man himself wants to carry on to another 50-over World Cup which is a lofty target.

The chatter, while understandable, also took away from BJ Watling’s retirement which was a shame.

He also got a momentum building 80 against England before the Indian triumph.

Taylor does not strike me as a person who would stick around beyond his time.

Short of a couple of World Cup final outcomes, he has achieved every goal I’m sure he has ever set himself.

It also hasn’t been a smooth ride for Taylor who was dumped as captain in favour of Brendon McCullum in a move that could have turned the team culture toxic.

To the credit of both men, it didn’t and ultimately McCullum ushered in the best era of Kiwi cricket ever.

Taylor also came back better than ever after an eye operation in late 2016.

Taylor can call time on his terms.

If he wants one more home summer, and I hope he does, then give it to him.

I’ll pay money to go see that farewell tour.

Reserves get a point in top of the table clash

Halfbaked kicked the weekend off with a Friday night clash against Island Bay. It was an entertaining game for the 7 Wainui supporters that endured the cold as the game finished with a 2-2 draw.

On to Saturday, second place Reserves travelled to Hutt Park to face top of the table Stop Out with a chance to jump to the top of the table. It was the perfect start for the lads as Adam Ross put the visitors ahead however the top of the table side showed why they were there. With the 2 goals, they took the lead and put the pressure on our Reserves. The second half was all Wainui as they pushed in search of the equaliser, and they found it in Cameron Blake as he put one in the back of the net with his head. The lads continued to press and look for the winning goal but it was not meant to be, 2-2 it finished and while they don’t climb up to first place, the pressure is still on.

scoring game thanks to another double hat-trick to Andrew Olivier and Adam Faulkner, while skipper Josh Wilkie got on the score sheet too The Roundballs were 3-0 ahead at half time and managed to hold on despite a nervy second half where the visitors came back into the game with 2 quick goals.

Both Pacifica sides walked away with a point each while the Undertakers had a difficult time in the late kick off over in Johnsonville.

On Sunday, the Women travelled to Porirua to face newly promoted Western Suburbs. Despite a goal to player-coach Heather Smith, the ladies were unable to earn a point as they fell to a 4-1 defeat.

Wainuiomata High School Junior 2 Team Win Again Wainuiomata High School’s Junior 2 Netball team had another strong game on Saturday 10 July 2021 against Hutt Valley High School 18 resulting in a 13-10 win. They are now sitting first equal in their grade. Despite starting with six (6) players, Wainuiomata High School worked well to lead at the end of the first quarter 4-3. WHS stretched their lead to 7-4 by half time. Hutt Valley High School came back in third quarter 9-7, but WHS stepped up their defence in the final quarter to take the win.

Defence players Emily Hargraves, Zaria Mitchell, and Victoria Rivett put pressure on the opposition attack that resulted in turnovers for WHS. Kiera Soderholm had a strong game at C and WA being available to bring the ball through court. Soderholm combined with attack player Russo Tuato-Afoa to feed the ball to shooters Shae-

lyn Kilburn and Integra Smith who were able convert the goals.

Alexa Buendia also had a solid performance playing at both ends of the court as GD and GS. As GD/GK, Buendia used her height and elevation to restrict passes into opposition goal circle, while at GS, she manoeuvred well in the goal circle to be in the perfect shooting position. “I was pleased with our game today. We stuck more with our players on defence and spread out more on attack,” says captain of the day Victoria Rivett. “The girls are starting to play more as a team and communicating well on court,” says manager Penny Hargraves. “It’s good to see them trying to achieve the goals they set for themselves for the game.” College netball is now on a two-week break, with the next competition game on Saturday 31 July 2021 a top of the table clash against Hutt Valley High School 17.
