Wellington City Council (WCC) will be going ahead with its controversial Karori Connections plan, the council’s Koata HƗtepe Regulary Process Committee decided yesterday, 13 December.

The decision came despite the fact that 68% of all respondents to the council’ consultation process either strongly opposed or opposed the project.

Council ignored community feedback Continued from page 1.

“I am appalled that this council ignores strong community feedback,” Wellington City Councillor Tony Randle told the “Independent Herald”.

“Further, I am appalled at the WCC Karori Connections Consultation Summary where the analysis only included submissions on the WCC form and did not include feedback from 1,228 submitters who used the Karori Shared Spaces submission form,” he says.

In particular, a chart in the council’s consultation summary claimed that “54% of Respondents support the overall proposal”.

“That’s trying to hide the fact that 70% are against the plan, if you ignore the people who are neutral or don’t know.

“It seems this is a city of the Green Party agenda,” he says.

Not all those who made submissions on the Karori Connections plan live in Karori.

Cr Randle has analysed the responses from people who live in Karori and this shows that 75% of them oppose the plan.

70% of people living in the area strongly oppose the plan, 5% oppose it, 2% are neutral, 5% support it and 18% strongly support it.

The main areas of concern among people opposing the plan are the removal of a large number of car parks from Glenmore Street to the end of Karori Road, installing cycle lanes on Karori Road and changes to bus stops, particularly where the bus stops are moved into the direct traffic lane.

A number of speakers during the meeting of the committee said that they disagreed with Cr Ran-

dle’s view that the council had not listened to the community.

They pointed to the fact that council staff had made 50 changes to the proposal in response to issues raised during the consultation.

“I fully back our [council staff] team,” Mayor Tory Whanau said, who was one of the speakers who said that council staff had listened to community feedback.

“They have made 50 changes as

a result of the consultation, which is fantastic.”

The Karori Connections plan was “to make it safer for people to get around, especially our tamariki,” the Mayor said.

The committee’s decision was not unanimous, with Cr Diane Calvert voting against it.

Following the committee’s decision, Cr Randle told the “Independent Herald: “It’s impossible to say no to a cycleway.”

Clean stream needed

Both the Karori Residents Association and the Friends of Waip hi Karori Stream (F.O.W.K.S.) are encouraging local residents to have their say on how quickly they want to see the quality of waterways measurably improved.

Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) is currently seeking submissions on its Natural Resources Plan. This plan is an integration and replacement of five regional plans for soil; fresh water; air; discharges to land; and the coastal marine area.

GWRC is consulting on its draft plan and people will need to move rapidly to have their say, as submissions close at 5pm tomorrow, 15 December.

The proposed plan change sets a target of 2040 for first step improvements which for many water quality factors and places will simply be enough to reverse the decline and get above national bottom lines.

For Karori Wa ihi and Kaiwharawhara Streams (which both start in Karori) that’s moving from an “E grade and very likely degrading” to “C grade”.

“The 2040 target reflects the timeline recommended by Whaitua Te Whanganui-a-Tara,” says Andrea Skews, the Chair of the Karori Residents Association.

“It is ambitious and a bit scary for councils.

“Some Wellington City Councillors wanted to support the 2040 target but were voted down (including by all of Karori’s

representatives), so Wellington City Council are submitting that 2060 is a better timeline.”

In its submission to the regional council, Wellington City Council (WCC) says it considers the 2040 timeframe “is unreasonable and will be difficult to achieve and does not take into consideration the current environmental constraints of Wellington City as well as the major financial constraints.

“The proposed timeframe of 2060 is consistent with WCC’s spatial planning framework and more consistent with the longterm plan and strategic financing of upgrades and expansions to the three waters network,” WCC says.

Retirees renting An article that goes hand-in-hand with a film partly shot in Karori has been posted on The Spinoff website. The film, “Last Home Renters” is about a retiree struggling to find a rental he can afford.

The article that goes with this short documentary, “The Worrying Rise of Retired Renters”. is by freelance writer Rachel Judkins.

“It’s easy to assume most seniors own their own homes, but Jenny is one of a growing number of retired renters whose living arrangements are precarious at best, either due to minimum-wage jobs that never afforded home ownership in the first place, or losing a house after life crises like business failures, the death of a partner or the GFC,” Rachel writes.

“According to the Retirement Commission, 20% of over 65s pay rent, and this increases to 35% of Māori and 46% of Pasifika.

“Many live in unsuitable housing, struggle to pay increasingly high rents, and find themselves moving constantly.”

Karori calendar proving popular

The 2024 Karori calendar, featuring photographs by the famed local photographer Simon Woolf, is proving so popular a second printing has been undertaken.

Simon has produced the calendar as a fundraiser for a new incubator that will be used by both Te Wao Nui Wellington Children’s Hospital neo-natal unit and the Life Flight Trust helicopter.

Each calendar sold sees $5 raised for the new incubator.

Karori features in some way in each of the images.

Some are Karori scenes, some are Karori wildlife and one is of a rainbow over Karori with the vew looking into Wellington city.

The idea for a Karori calendar came from Karori resident Joy McNicholl.

“Joy came into the Pop Up shop with calendars from overseas,” Simon told the “Independent Herald”.

“She said ‘we should have one for Karori’,” and that set the calendar project in motion.

This Pop Up is also being held to raise funds for the new incubator.

Khandallah Fair rescued from rain

The annual Wellington North Rotary Street Fair Committee began watching the Sunday 10 November weather forecast with increasing alarm. Would the southerly blast actually come to pass?

Late on Saturday they contemplated moving the fair inside, something never previously attempted.

Rapid consultation with the Khandallah Town Hall and the local village Presbyterian Church gave a glimmer of hope.

A team was despatched to these two sites to survey the space available to accommodate the large number of booked stalls and activities and to work on the logistics of such a transfer.

Late on Saturday evening the call went out to all the traders and groups due at the fair: ‘The street fair is moving into the two local halls – are you in?’

making the best of it.

The fair, in the end, drew a crowd that filled the halls.

Queues formed for the two sausage sizzles on offer. Food trucks set up in the churchyard and local cafes pumped out litres of hot coffee. Devonshire teas, relocated from the Town Hall, flowed in the church lounge and

a shortened roster of local musical groups entertained in the church.

Stallholders took the change in their stride, many reporting they had enjoyed a good day’s trading, which also helped make up for the bad weather which had plagued the Thorndon Fair the previous Sunday.

As the day ended the sun came out.

Wet working bee in Trelissick Park The last working bee for the year of the Trelissick Park Group went ahead last Sunday afternoon, 10 December, in spite of the foul weather.

The wind died down and eventually the showers passed.

The group of six was occupied with weeding around recent plantings on both sides of the traverse track below the Oban Street (Wadestown) entrance steps, and installed a large weed-collection bag to trial this new way of ‘composting’ Wellington’s widespread weed tradescantia (wandering willie).

Churton Park Community Carols Amesbury Hall was filled with Christmas cheer on 9 December for the Churton Park Community Carols, organised by the Churton Park Community Association.

More than 170 people joined the Trust Porirua City Brass Band and the Capital Harmony Chorus to sing along in an evening of well-loved carols.

The evening was also an opportunity to

raise funds for the Life Flight Trust.

The community gave generously, through a bucket collection and donations at a free café organised by the St John’s Anglican Church.

Together, they raised $272.40 for the Life Flight Trust.

A sausage sizzle provided by the Johnsonville Lions will also add to the Lions’ donation to the Life Flight Trust.

Transforming lives through mentorship Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wellington, renowned for their impactful mentoring program, recently received heartfelt feedback from a parent, showcasing the life-altering influence of their initiatives.

Taygs, a young individual who has faced significant challenges due to illness and bullying, found solace and support through the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programme.

The parent, speaking on behalf of Taygs, shared a moving account.

“If anyone has the means to donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters, please do, they are absolutely amazing,” the parent said.

“Taygs has been unwell for almost two years, missing out on schooling and experiencing bullying, which led to anxiety and PTSD. “We were referred to Big Brothers Big Sisters to get a buddy for Taygs, someone purely there for HIM.” Despite a waiting period of around three months, the impact was profound.

Taygs found a perfect match in Sam, who not only spends quality time with Taygs but also includes him in activities with his wife.

Every Saturday, they engage in various activities, from visiting the driving range to playing basketball and biking.

Witnessing Taygs’ transformation, the parent expressed gratitude, stating: “I see Taygs smiling again, becoming more confident each week, and always eager for Saturdays.

“They’ve made a world of difference

Bowlzilla coming to Karori

Bowlzilla returns to Karori early next year.

New Zealand’s biggest skatebaording festival, Bowlzilla comprises a series of events at various Wellington venues from 15 to 18 February.

Karori will host the final event on the programme, the Karori Vert Jam. This will be held at Ian Galloway Park on 18 February.

Vert skateboarding is where people ride a skate ramp or other incline, allowing the skateboarder to perform tricks.

Bowlzilla Wellington will be celebrating

its ninth year at this event, which will include the New Zealand National Bowl Skating Championships.

There is an open invitation to everyone to be part of the celebration and Bowlzilla is free.

“The Bowlzilla community has always been enthusiastic in their celebration of the

most important parts of skating; fun, unity, music, arts, creativity, and all-round heavy ripping,” Bowlzilla Wellington Director Chad Ford says.

“For our ninth year we are dialling up the good times and making sure everyone knows how grateful we are for all their years of support in the best little city in the world.”

Jo is an outstanding educator with over 20 years’ experience in Primary School education in a variety of contexts; both state and private education in New Zealand and internationally.

Vital role in protecting species The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has this month acknowledged the significant contributions of botanic gardens, aquariums, and zoos around the world in their mission to protect wild animals, fungi, and plants.

Wellington City Council’s Social, Cultural, and Economic Committee Chair Councillor Teri O’Neill welcomes this news which highlights the value the city’s parks, gardens and zoos are contributing to the environment around us. ]% Z tari-Wil-

ton’s Bush, the Botanic Garden ki Pa and Zealandia are all regularly recognised locally and internationally for their amazing conservation work, contributing to the protection and preservation of our taonga and environment,” Cr O’Neill says.

“As caretakers of this land, we proudly punching above your waist in conservation matters, and the results are on our doorsteps with native bird numbers soaring, a green belt the envy of the world, threatened plant species being propagated, protected and preserved, and marine reserves

burgeoning with sea life.”

The IUCN’s Position Statement addresses the pivotal role of these institutions in conservation work including veterinary science, wildlife reintroduction and translocation, research, education, community engagement, and fostering access to nature-based experiences.

“The IUCN Species Survival Commission recognises the leading role that these organisations already play in the science and practice of conservation,” IUCN President, Razan AI Mubaraksays.

“Species can recover in the wild, if given a chance in well-managed captive populations such as those maintained by zoos, botanic gardens, and aquaria.”

At tari Native Botanic Gardens more than 330 species of threatened plants are grown from around Aotearoa, many of these collections contributing to conservation projects across the motu though staff’s horticultural expertise.

Some of the plants in the garden’s care are now extinct in the wild and many are rarer than kakapo.

A recent example of this vital work has been the propagating of the seed of the rare rush Juncus holoschoenus var. holoschoenus which was collected by NIWA staff a few years ago and sent to ri for storage and propagation.

Recently, DOC Rangers from Turangi checked on the wild plants and discovered that sadly none remain in the only known wild population.

The DOC rangers recently travelled to tari to collect the 64 plants propagated to return them to the frost flat wetlands which they call home.

Stationery for schools Altrusa Ohariu is currently running its Stationery for Schools drive following the success of this project last year.

During December and January Altrusa Ohariu will collect any unwanted stationery to donate to local schools to use at the start of the school year.

“Last year we distributed stationery to five primary and one secondary school from Johnsonville to Linden,” says club member Emily Burton.

“It’s a great way to repurpose

Cricket club breaks new ground The Johnsonville Cricket Club has appointed Malinda Warnapura as its first ever full time Director of Coaching and Development.

Malinda has been engaged on a three year contract to take control of the coaching and development at the club.

Malinda is a Sri Lankan national who played 14 tests and three ODI’s for Sri Lanka.

He has a highest test score of 120 and an average in test match cricket a tick over 35 and is also a more than useful off break bowler.

Mali scored more than 9,500 first class runs during his career.

Since retiring from cricket and even while still playing some of Malinda’s experience includes: s seven years coaching and playing in England; s Batting Coach for the Sri Lankan national Women’s team; s Batting coach for the Sri Lankan Emerging and Sri Lankan A Men’s teams; s Head coach of the Sri Lankan National League team Kandy; and s Director of Cricket at St Peters College in Sri Lanka for four years.

Malinda is an ICC Level 3 accredited coach and comes with excellent references from, among others, former Sri Lankan players and commentator Russell Arnold.

Malinda arrived in the country just under two weeks ago and is

quickly coming to grips with the local cricket scene and the Johnsonville club in particular.

Outstanding opening partnership

An outstanding opening partnership helped the Johnsonville Cricket Club’s first XI to victory over Victoria University at Kelburn Park on 9 December.

Johnsonville’s openers, Scott Mudgway and the team’s Captain Devan Vishvaka put 110 runs on the board before Devan lost his wicket on 54 runs from exactly the same number of deliveries.

The opening stand created a great platform for Johnsonville who reached 240 for the loss of seven wickets in 47 overs of their Ewen Chatfield Trophy match.

This gave Johnsonville a three wicket win over Victoria University, who scored 238 for the loss of 9 wickets in their 50 overs.

Scott went on to score 62 before he was out, while Sean Wakelin also demonstrated fine form with the bat to finish the match on 40 not out.

Maximus Petrie was outstanding with the ball, taking four wickets for 40 runs from his 10 overs.

Connor Lusty also finished with good figures, taking two wickets and conceding just 25 runs from his 10 overs.

Before notching up his unbeaten 40, Sean had also bowled well, taking two wickets.

The Johnsonville women’s team did not fare so well in their mactch at Alex Moore Park.

Batting first, they scored 137 all out and North City won the match when they scored

140 for the loss of two wickets.

Karori was well beaten by Taita in their Ewen Chatfield Trophy match at Karori Park on 9 December.

Batting first, Taita was all out for 299. They then bowled Karori out for 218.

Liam Roche performed outstandingly for Karori with both the bat and the ball.

He took three wickets at a cost of just 19 runs, and scored 88 from only 86 deliveries with the bat.

Max Sargentina also batted well, scoring 39 from just 34 deliveries while Sam French scored 25.

Hugh Teesdale took three wickets during his bowling spell at a cost of 58 runs.

Onslow took just 20 overs to overhaul Wainuiomata in their Hazlett Trophy match, played at Wainuiomata’s Bryan Heath Park.

Batting first Wainuiomata was all out for 123 and Onslow took out the six wicket victory when they reached 125 for the loss of four wickets.

Micah Conroy scored a rapid 67 not out from just 52 balls for Onslow, while Henry McIntyre also finished not out on 42 after he had taken three Wainuiomta wickets at a cost of 35 runs.

Henry was one of three Onslow bowlers took three wickets each.

Matthew Scoble took three for 22 and Dave Hancock three for 28.

Onslow ccontinues to lead the Hazlett Trophy table, where they are tied with Upper Hutt United on 18 points.
