Ground work is now well under way on New Zealand’s firsr private development dedicated to getting first home buyers on the property ladder.

The development will deliver 51 new homes in Gawler Grove, and 41 of these will be made available to first home buyers.

The reason 10 homes will be placed on the open market is so that Koru Homes makes at least some money, as it will not be making anything from the 41 homes sold to first home buyers, says Adrian Chooi, the founder of Koru Homes NZ. Mr Chooi’s main aim is to provide housing for people who otherwise could not afford to buy.

A new build is not usually an option for first home buyers, and Koru Homes is now making new, quality homes an option for them.

“There are so many people who can’t afford to buy a home,” Mr Chooi says.

“We want to help them build equity and build their future.

“I’d like as many people as possible to get that opportunity.”

The project, he says “is community focused. It is first home buyer focused.

“It’s all about family and community,” Mr Chooi says.

The 51 homes in Koru Kāinga will have three bedrooms, two bathrooms and parking.

They are 118 square metres.

They will feature spacious open floor plans and quality liveable indoor and outdoor spaces.

Tenga Pickering Contstruction Ltd is currently developing the ground work for Koru Kāinga.

It had already completed one building platform that will have four houses placed on it by last Wednesday and work on the second was progressing rapidly.

As well as creating the building platforms, Tenga Pickering was also working on creating services – water, stormwater and sewer lines – as well as creating the roads that will service the new subdivision.

The ground works were timetabled to be complete by April, says Dan Miller, Tenga Pickering’s Contracts Manager.

The houses that will go on site will be built

by EasyBuild Homes. They will start building the homes in January and begin placing them on site in March, Mr Chooi says.

The current timetable for completion of the Koru Kāinga project is December 2024, he adds.

Although work on the project which began two and a half years ago is now well under way, it has not been without its frustrations.

“It’s been really stressful,” Mr Chooi says.

“People recognise the needs of first home buyers, but we are treated as just a developer.

“All you get is roadblocks.”

That is in contrast to what happened in other countries, who expedite the process for developments that aim to help put first home buyers into their own properties.

“We want to build as fast as we can to meet the needs of first home buyers.”

Koru Homes is, at the moment, “planning an even bigger project in Wainuiomata that will help first home buyers,” Mr Chooi says.

Truly remarkable award winner

Roya Sultani from Wainuiomata High School was presented with the Lower Hutt Manukura Award on 5 December.

The Manukura Award recognises and celebrates outstanding voluntary service in the community from high school students.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry presented the award to one student from each of seven Lower Hutt high schools.

“I am deeply honoured to stand before you tonight as a recipient of the Lower Hutt Manukura award,” Roya said in her award acceptance speech.

“Four and a half years ago I arrived in New Zealand as a refugee from Afghanistan, escaping the harsh realities of war.

“I came with no knowledge of the English language but what I have found here was a second home – a place that accepted me when I needed it the most, provided me with the gift of education.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunities I have been given, considering the challenges faced by many in my home country, especially girls who are denied access to education, school, university and employment.

“Today I am here not only as a representative of my school but also as a testament to the transformative power of education and community support.

“Community service, to me, is more than just a term or a requirement. It is a way of giving back to the place that has welcomed me with open arms.

“It is about creating a bond, a connection and a sense of belonging.

“When I think of community service, I think of the countless acts of kindness, like threads weaving a caring and understanding society.

“New Zealand became my refuge, not only in terms of a physical haven but also in the warmth and support of its people.

“Community service, in essence, is an expression of gratitude – a way of

saying thank you to the community that welcomed me and my family with open arms.

“It is about recognising the connection of our lives and understanding that our actions, no matter how small, have the power to make a difference.

“Community service is the embodiment of selflessness, a willingness to contribute to the well-being of others without expecting anything in return.

“It is the embodiment of the Kiwi spirit that I have come to admire and love.

“As I accept this reward I am reminded that community service is not just about the project we undertake or the hours we dedicate, it is about the impact we create, the lives we touch, and the positive change we bring to our environment.

“It is a testament to the values that define us as a community – compassion, empathy and a shared commitment to make New Zealand a better place.

“In conclusion, community service, for me, is a bridge that connects us all; beyond the language, culture and

The seven students honoured with awards “were truly remarkable,” Wainuiomata Ward Councillor Keri Brown says.

Among them Roya “stood out”.

“Congratulations to Roya; you have made Wainuiomata High School, your family and the entire community proud,” Cr Brown says.

Mayor Barry says it’s a privilege to celebrate the service of our rangatahi.

“Hearing their stories and the way they give back to their communities

is inspiring and they’ve made a real difference to Lower Hutt, making it a better place to live.

“Each student spoke with deep passion for service and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for them.”

Newly elected MP for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti Cushla Tangaere-Manuel was the guest speaker at the awards preesentation, while Hutt South MP Chris Bishop shared his reflections with the award winners on the evening.

Next year Roya plans to attend Victoria University to study International Relations and Law.

Hutt City Kindergartens Association turns 95

First for local darts player

Wainuiomata’s Jonny Tata became the first New Zealander to reach the quarter finals of the World Darts Championship on 7 December.

Jonny qualified following a straight sets victory over Jim Widmayer at the event, held at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, England.

Jonny began the contest by going up two sets with his superior scoring taking him ahead.

He then upped his 180 count to four in the first leg after the break only to see Jim level the set up. Jim did not score a double in the deciding leg and Jonny punished him with a two-dart 54 finish.

This gave Jonny a 3-0 victory and his third win of the championships.

In the quarter final Jonny faced the top seed and tournament favourite Andy Baetens on 8 December.

Despite producing his best performance of the championship, where he threw seven 180s, the Kiwi debutant was unable to progress to the semi-finals.

Jonny had darts to win each of the first three sets but came up dry each time.

Down 3-0, he came back into the match, however, to trail by just one set.

Major milestone for cricketer Jordan

Wainuiomata cricketer Jordan Rangikauhata chalked up a major milestone when he made his 100th appearance for the premier team at Bryan Heath Park on 9 December.

Jordan started out at the Wainuiomata Cricket Club as a junior who could bat and bowl with some good wheels.

In recent years however he has given up the long run up for some wrist spin.

Throughout the years Jordan has always been a true team member and clubman of Wainuiomata.

Jordan played for the home team in their Hazlett Trophy match against Onslow and following the match he was presented with his 1000 game baggy.

The game did not go Wainuiomata’s way, however.

Batting first they scored 123 all out. Onslow reached 125 for the loss of four wickets after just 20 overs to take out the six wicket victory.

Yesh Preshanth was the best of the Wainuiomata batsmen, scoring 28 not out while Daniel Hewitt scored 20, Callum Mackaness scored 19 and Craig Foster scored 18.

Ryan Jackson bowled outstandingly for Wainuiomata, finishing with figures of three wickets for 24 runs.

The premier’s next match will be against Eastern Suburbs at MacAlister Park on 16 December.

The Wainuiomata second XI was unable to retain its spot at the top of the Wellington division 6 table.

In a top of the table clash Wainuiomata lost by just one wicket to Naenae Little Masters.

Batting first Wainuiomata was all out for 141. Naenae then just managed to edge ahead, finishing with 144 for the loss of nine wickets.

Jordan Nevalagi bowled well for the green and blacks, taking three wickets for 25 runs.

Tanuj Ahuja and Chris Ingram took two wickets each, Tanuj at a cost of 17 runs and Chris at a cost of 19 runs.

The Wainuiomata women’s team had a bye on 9 December.

A Rocha working bee The A Rocha team working at Waiu Wetland has had its last working bee for 2023 on 9 December.

In the last two months the working bees have focused on releasing more than 400 plants that went into the ground this year and controlling.grass growth, blackberry and gorse.

Unfortunately deer have come down from the hills and nibbled on some plant species which will need extra protection in future.

The next monthly A Rocha working bee will be on 15 February 2024 from 10am to 12noon. Morning tea is provided and new volunteers are always welcome. For more information contact

Hugely successful school lunch taste test

Trust House/Ka Ora, Ka Ako, who provide the healthy school lunch programme for five schools in Wainuiomata, hosted a very successful taste testing on 7 December.

Students from the five schools – Wainuiomata Primary, Fernlea, Konini, St Claudine Thevenet and Wainuiomata High – provided up to 10 students each to the taste testing, which was held at the Wainuiomata Rugby clubrooms.

The aim of the tasting, where 10 different dishes were given to the students, was to enhance the 2024 menu so that it provides offerings the students really like.

“It went really well,” says Trust House/Ka Ora, Ka Ako’s school lunches co-ordinator Joyce O’Donnell.

“We had a fun day. It was amazing.”

The top rated lunch was sushi and there were two runners-up – cheeseburger pizza, and sweet and sour meatballs.

“Now that we have got the three favourite lunches we can introduce them into the programme for next year,” Joyce says.

“I think it is really important that we provide lunches that the children like.

“The last thing we want is a lot of wastage.”

It is also, she says “always really nice to go into a school and a child comes up and says: ‘That meal was amazing’.”

As well as the students, there was one staff member from four of the schools and two staff members from one school at the tasting.

“A nutritionist from the Ministry of Education was with us as a guest and that was a good experience for us,” Joyce says.

“They were very welcoming and very helpful and it was great,” Joyce says.
