Wainuiomata icon Tony Watling has written his last ode as the twilight years take their toll. The 94 year old has been forced to give up his passion and move out of the valley. Once one of the countries top tool makers Tony says he moved to Wainuiomata in the early 80’s to work for Brugger Industries.

He had two boys Ray and Peter.

Tony was born in the Philippines and lived in China, his father worked for Adriatic Oil and was a keen collector of orchid’s and then the family moved back to England.

“We had a magnificent home in Devon on seven acres, it had every fruit tree you could imagine and came third in the ideal homes exhibition, things were idyllic but then my father got involved with a French tyre company with some stuff you could put in tyres so you couldn’t get a puncture,” he says.

“It worked perfectly well until

winter came and the solution wrecked the tyre and he ended up having to pay for millions of tyres that had been wrecked and we lost the lot, everything we were paupers.”

His father later invented a mop which Tony helped to make at the age of nine, but the family remained hard up and his father never regained his fortune.

WW2 rolled around and when Tony turned 18 in 1941 he sat his trade test to enter the British army.

“All we were given was a file, a scribe, a square and a pair of a calipers and a face plate,” Tony says.

“All you have got is your eyesight and I could see a thousandth of an inch.”

He completed the test and avoided becoming canon fodder.

Tony says it is with great sadness that he has had to leave the valley after spending the biggest part of

his life there but on medical advice he has been told the he and his wife Joan are no longer to live on their own.

The absence of tourists and the prospect of further job losses suggest that the risks to rents over the next 6-12 months are to the downside.

Recent data revealed by CoreLogic shows the Lower Hutt region to be one that is not affected with rental rates still buoyant.

The data showed a decline of 10% for Queenstown, as well as falls in other areas such as Masterton, Westland, and Waimakariri. But at the same time, many other areas are still buoyant, including Lower Hutt, Gisborne, and Dunedin. Interestingly, Southland District (which includes tourist areas such as Te Anau) has seen rents continue to rise too.

Students taking part in Wainuiomata High’s Maori activism course have created a novel way to raise fund for the Kokiri Marae Women’s Refuge. They have designed earrings which they are making and putting up for sale using social media.

Taking the class is Wainuiomata High Maori Activism teacher Nicole Hawkins who is impressed with their dedication to their activism.

This class is a combination of senior social studies standards, tikanga Maori standards and history standards she says.

“These guys did a mufti day to make the money to make the earrings to get a bigger donation and now they are using social media to promote them. I think it is great,” she says.

Nicole says because a majority of the students are Maori and a lot of them have come from the Maori whanau rumaki immersion unit, activism will be a part of their adult lives.

“This is very real learning and preparing them for the real world and what they will be expected to do,” she says.

From the mufti day they have now raised enough money for materials to make the earrings

which will be manufactured using the schools laser cutter.

And they already have a social media page @rangatahi.for.

Nicole says she couldn’t be happier with what the students have achieved.

“I’m really excited. These young people are amazing and seeing their engagement and drive really highlighted for me that it is coming from a place that is deep care and responsibility for them,” Nicole says.

Students in Wellington are gearing up to strike from school this September 4th, to protest inaction on climate change. Their demands? That Government invests in a green COVID-19 response; that there is a just transition provided for workers in unsustainable industries, with retraining and new job opportunities made available; and that all who are able to vote, do so with the climate crisis in mind.

With the economic impacts of COVID-19 weighing heavily on the country, School Strike 4 Climate is focusing heavily on the impact that the rebuild will have on the climate. But they haven’t forgotten the Government’s commitments to zero carbon, or the need to reach that target as fast as possible.

What has been hard for me this year is probably worrying about the health and safety of my family here and overseas. Especially with their work and the health of my grandparents.

The hardest part of this year was moving back to Wellington from Wanaka in June. It was hard leaving my friends behind and coming back to friends I knew from five years ago.

The worst thing that happened to me so far in 2020 was going into lockdown because I did miss my friends and teachers even though it was an ok experience. It was an adventure and I was excited to go back to school.

For me the most disappointing thing of 2020 was that year 8 camp was meant to be in week nine of term one but because of Covid has been rescheduled to week two of term four.

The hardest in 2020 has been not being able to see my family overseas to make sure they are safe and healthy during their lockdown.

For me the most difficult thing in 2020 wouild be the lockdown with not going to school and missing my after school activities.

Dark Sky events for Wainuiomata Greater Wellington Regional Council has created a series of Dark Sky events at Wainuiomata Recreation Area to celebrate and emphasise the importance of protecting our night skies and biodiversity.

Light pollution is a very real threat to native species, its important the new generation values the crucial role of night-time ecosystems, says Ricky Clarkson, Greater Wellington park ranger.

“Many people don’t realise artificial light disrupts ecosystems

by affecting species’ reproduction cycles, feeding behaviours, sleep, navigational abilities and safety from predators,” says Ricky.

“In line with the extensive restoration and protection work we conduct, these playful Dark Sky events aim to get the hapori whanui (community) out of the city and into nature.”

Held in partnership with Wellington Astronomical Society, these four events cover a range of activities from star gazing, night-

time photography and insights into Maori astronomy.

Last week, the first event “Night Time Mysteries” kicked off at Wainuiomata-Orongorongo water collection area’s focussing on the forest at night, water history and the conservation underway for North Island brown kiwi, which is carried out by Remutaka Conservation Trust.

in One-pot sticky salmon Ingredients: • 4 x 200g skinless salmon fillets • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 teaspoons cornflour • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds • 1/3 cup chicken stock • 1/2 cup fresh navel orange juice • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed, halved • 2 x 250g packets microwave brown rice and quinoa mix • 1 navel orange, halved, very thinly sliced Fresh mint leaves, to serve

1. Season salmon with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add salmon. Cook for 3 minutes each side or until browned.

2. Meanwhile, combine cornflour, garlic, fennel seeds, stock, orange juice and maple syrup in a medium jug.

Season with salt and pepper. Add maple mixture to pan.

Sprinkle with asparagus. Cook for 4 minutes or until salmon is cooked as desired and sauce thickens.

3. Meanwhile, cook rice mix following packet directions.

4. Top salmon with sliced orange. Sprinkle with mint.

Serve with rice mix.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Ripe tomatoes for Christmas?: By Wally Richards With tomatoes it is about 60 to 80 days from transplanting to maturity or the first fruit ripening.

Now we are at the beginning of August this means that there is about 20 weeks till Xmas or 140 odd days to be a bit more exact.

If we look at the potatoes that take the longest maturing period which is about 120 days; from planting the sprouted seed potatoes to harvest, then there is time to spare for growing potatoes for Xmas.

Twenty days extra to be exact which is good value as sometimes weather conditions can mean the nominal 120 days may be insufficient to reach full maturity.

With tomatoes it is about 60 to 80 days from transplanting to maturity or the first fruit ripening.

This can vary a lot as most gardeners are well aware, the fruit is likely to form but it will depend a lot on sunlight hours and temperatures for the fruit to red up or ripen.

Then there is the period of time from sowing the seed to the transplant stage which can be about two weeks to six weeks dependent on conditions such as temperature, day light hours, food and moisture.

If you are purchasing tomato plants from a garden centre that are ready to plant up you are likely about a month in advance of sowing seeds on a heat pad. More likely six-eight weeks in advance if you do not have a heat pad.

Once the seeds have fully germinated and before they can start to stretch to the light, the cell punnets should be moved out into a glasshouse or similar where they get over head light.

This is most important otherwise indoors they would stretch towards the nearest light source and weaken and likely ‘damp off’.

As most glasshouses are not heated they will slow down in growth and by giving them a little nitrogen rich food should help to keep them growing along nicely.

The most important aspect is not to overwater the young plants while the cooler weather persists.

Ideally they should be given small drinks and allowed to dry down before further moisture is applied.

Purchase one or more tomato plants which you will pot up into the next

size pots with compost, a bit of chook manure and some of my own Secret Tomato Food.

Neem Powder should be included to help keep the whitefly and tomato psyllid at bay.

If you had problems last season with psyllids on either potatoes or tomatoes then you are likely to have even worse problems this season.

The solution is the Cell Strengthen Products we have that will wipe out the psyllids and allow you to harvest great crops again.

There are three products... a Silicon & Boron soil drench used prior to or at planting time and again about two weeks later.

At the two week stage of a young plant you spray it all over with Silicon Cell Strengthening spray with Silicon Super Spreader added to it to drive the former into the plant.

Repeat spray every two weeks till plant reaches maturity then once a month while harvesting.

What happens is the cells of the plant becomes so tough that when the psyllids hatch out they cannot piece the plant to feed and they soon die of

starvation.

It does not matter how many adults are around and the hundreds of eggs they lay, none will ever become adults.

The leaves of the plant will also be bigger than normal and the fruit bigger and better as Silicon helps the plant gain more energy from the sun.

If you don’t get your tomatoes in early and have ripe fruit before Xmas then your fruit will likely ripen in January/February period when the price of tomatoes has fallen and you have missed the boat on having your own home grown while prices are still high in the shops.

The same applies at the other end of the season and that is to have ripe tomatoes to pick later in autumn through to early winter, when once again prices have risen.

Growing in containers and progressively potting up to larger containers means you can protect your early tomato plants against the cold, winds and frosts even if you do not have a glasshouse or similar.

After 36 years, Crown continues to go in circles to deny “true justice” to admittedly innocent postie.

Since 11 June 1999, the Crown Law Office has claimed that “in early June 1999, they fully, finally, irrevocably and quite properly settled my high court employment claim for being ‘wrongfully dismissed without a final warning on 7 September 1984’” as the judge assumed without proof I was.

They still claim that my psychiatrist authorised them to go around my lawyer and deal directly with me over my legal affairs to complete the settlement of my claim when I was a diagnosed bipolar compulsory mental health inpatient involuntarily intoxicated on mind impairing and vision blurring psychiatric drugs, but which my psychiatrist has sensibly denied to the Health and Disability Commissioner in writing on 6/11/2007, but he has not talked to Crown Law about this for me since.

In July 2001, after Crown Law could not prove I had been “dismissed in 1984” at all, so Treasury could “unequivocally and sincerely” orally apologise for it as the 1999 deed required, I offered to pay the unjust settlement money back which was illegally paid to me in 1999; so they agreed to “amend the apology in the way you request” which was that “it had to be provably true and just”.

On 10 March 1999, when I signed the settlement deed for being “wrongly dismissed in 1984” it appears that no one knew that NZ Post Ltd had failed to produce, under discovery on 27 April 1987, a copy of the Director-General’s record kept for me in 1984 which has no “dismisssal” on it.

This vital evidence was, in fact, not made known to me until Archives sent it to me in an O.I.A.

response by letter on 22 May 2002 at a time when the entire settlement was being renegotiated.

So according to the doctrine of uberrimae fidei or of utmost good faith, “the effect of non-disclosure is to render the original settlement deed voidable at the option of the party to whom the duty of disclosure was owing”, this being done by my then 18 year old son and advocate formally accepting two draft written and oral amended and/ or new apologies on 4 April 2005 first offered to him for his acceptance when he was an unrepresented 15 year old minor on 2 May and 11 July 2002.

These two renegotiated apologies confirm the newly proven true facts that I did not resign in 1984; my appointment was not annulled; I was not dismissed and I did not cease, and reconfirm that I “was

a good postman who never did anything wrong in the Post Office” and that the Crown has “settled with me according to my claims”, i.e., those made by my QC in 1991 being “wages to date, damages and costs”, I am still waiting for this agreement to be honoured and fulfilled by the Crown.

Since 5 April 2005, Treasury has claimed that the renegotiated apologies containing their own remedies “are just some words: we settled your claim in 1999” even though they wrote in an email on 12/10/2001, “we are keen to agree with Mr Carter on an apology and fulfill Mr Carter’s wish for a meaningful apology as...the apology agreed in the settlement agreement in 1999 was not fulfilled” Chris Bishop MP says he “wants to see this settled” but will only try to force me to accept the oral

apology in the original settlement in 1999 for a dismissal that never occurred, as I do not want.

And Ginny Andersen MP agrees that “the Crown ought to keep its word, honour and fulfill the amended and/or new settlement as that is what it was made for”: but she won’t do anything to help.

After two articles by the Wainuiomata News in May 2019, Crown Law agreed that I “did not waive the oral apology in the deed in June 1999 because I was locked up in a mental institution at the time and couldn’t get out to receive it”: but they have now gone full circle again claiming in a letter of 4 August 2020 that I “waived the oral apology in June 1999 by not turning up to receive it”, I want the two outstanding apologies from the A-G and P M at a treaty style hui at Time Out, Rowe Parade. Saint Benedict’s College student Dallas Serj Reilly is campaigning for the government to do more for youth mental health.

He says the issue is not getting the focus it should and he has organised a march to parliament to get the politicians to take notice.

“There was a guideline for mentally healthy schools that was bought up in 2001 which was sent to parliament and it has got lost and has never been revisited and most schools are too scared to talk about the issue of mental health and suicide,” he says.

The 17-year old, year 13, student from Saint Bernard’s College is no stranger to getting stuck in to achieve his goals. He is a on the

Student Youth Council and over the past few years has balanced Merit-Excellence in NCEA and run fundraisers and awareness campaigns for the Mayoral Election, 40-Hour Famine, Caritas, St Vincent De Paul, and Life Matters.

Now he says he is taking on his most challenging event yet. He is organising a march from Civic Square in Wellington to Parliament all in the name of student mental health.

“We are asking politicians to stop being lazy and revisit the 2001 Guidelines for Mentally Healthy Schools and while doing this we will be working with Lesley Frederickson from the NZ Association of Optometrists and including eye tests within our guidelines for good reason,”

he says.

“They talk about what’s the biggest issue facing the next generation and they talk about climate but youth suicide is just lingering in the background,” he says.

He says although the current government has invested in mental health in general they need to focus on how schools are dealing with it.

Dallas has a real passion for politics and organised the 2019 local body elections mayoral debate at Saint Benedict’s to raise funds for mental awareness.

He is also hoping to orgainse a social justice Christmas festival in Wainuiomata later in the year.

The march leaves Civic Square 12 noon, 9th September and will head to Parliament.

Brown cannot afford to be a bust The Warriors signing of Nathan Brown typifies the lost nature of the club at present.

Despite a gutsy win over an inept Manly on Friday, the team is often lost on the field and they are lost off it.

Brown is a close friend of Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan and having earlier ruled himself out of negotiations he has now been signed on a three-year deal.

Brown, 47, is self-described as a career coach but his time at a rebuilding Newcastle Knights was less than stellar.

His record was 94 games, 24 wins, 1 draw, 69 losses and while the Warriors aren’t in a full-blown rebuild, they’re nowhere near title contenders.

Brown clearly had no problem being the back-up option after interimWarriors coach Todd Peyton was the man in demand until he pulled out

due to family medical grounds.

The prospect of rugby league guru Gus Gould coming onboard is a positive if he can relate to the players.

The Warriors cannot get out of their own way and they tend to create their own PR disasters.

Another one happened this week when veteran halfback Blake Green headed to Newcastle after ownership said publicly several months ago he wasn’t wanted next year.

Green’s departure has annoyed the

Warriors however, a more professional club would not have revealed their hand so early.

Green had no choice once he knew he was on a team that did not want him.

The players left battling in Australia now have a face-saving mission on their hands for 2020.

All but extinct are their finals chances, many of those left are now playing for contracts.

It’s been impressive the impact of

the loan players from other clubs.

Jack Hetherington in particular has shown many young Warriors forwards the hard-edge they need to be a forward every week in the NRL. Having said that, his coat hanger tackle on the weekend should have seen him sent off for the game.

The Warriors now think they have a super team in Brown and Gould, only time will tell if that is a reality.

Fact is, after years of mediocrity, the only way is up.

Ulalei Finalists in Awards By: Toli Sagaga Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball Club are thrilled that their Team Ulalei Pua, are finalists for The Gillies Group Team of the Year at this year’s Kapura Hutt Valley Sports Awards. This follows Ulalei Pua taking Ulalei to unprecedented heights in 2019 by winning the 2019 Netball Hutt Valley Premier 1 Championship for the first time in the Club’s history. 2019 was a memorable year for netball that included the epic Silver Ferns World Championship performance in Manchester in July 2019 and Te Wananga o Raukawa Pulse finally etching their name in New Zealand netball history as the 2019 ANZ Champions.

The judging panel are likely to have been persuaded by Ulalei Pua receiving further honours at the 2019 Netball Hutt Valley Senior Awards that included: • The Bubbles Cup for the Highest Goal Average; • The Baldwin Cup for Highest Goal Average in Round 2; • Most Valuable Player in the Grand Final, Brittany Antipas; • Assisting Ulalei to win the Pewhairangi Shield, awarded to the netball club with the Highest Points Aggregate.

This talented team consisted of players representing at international level in netball and other sporting codes: • Ali Colledge and Mandy Ingham represented New Zealand at the 2019 Indoor Netball World Cup in South Africa; • Coral Winiata represented New Zealand in the NZ Women’s Touch Team who were silver medallists at the 2019 World Cup held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and • Gerardine Solia-Gibbs represented Samoa at the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England.

Alongside Ulalei Pua will be Ulalei’s young Premier player Lace Tangianau who is also a finalist for the Boulcott Hospital and Specialist Centre Young Volunteer of the Year.

This multi-talented youngster, a regular age-group Netball Hutt Valley Representative, was nominated for her contribution to her other sporting code, softball.

The 2020 Kapura Hutt Valley Sports Awards will take place on Thursday 3 September 2020 at Walter Nash Stadium where the winners will be announced.
