Wellington Rugby League ushers in new era Continued from page 1 A Mihi Whakatau, led by Te Runanganui o Te Ati Awa (ki te Upoko o te Ika a Maui) chairman Kura Moeahu, received Andre into his important new community leadership role marking a new era for Rugby League in Wellington.

200 people attended the Mihi Whakatau including members of Parliament Hon. Meka Whaitiri, Barbara Edmonds MP for Mana and other local Parliamentarians and local government representatives.

Club Chairs, WRL President Star Olsen and Patron Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban.

Andre has been involved in Rugby League his whole life from playing at a high level to volunteering in his Club.

At the time of being appointed Andre was the Chair of Randwick Rugby League Club and a senior leader in UNICEF. “We recognised as a Board that we needed to change what we were doing at WRL to do a better job for our communities” Leon Downes, Board Co-Chair says.

in Wellington under real pressure, including Rugby League. It has forced us to look more closely at how we deliver our sport and we needed to make the decision to do things differently. Now more than ever our communities, not just the people who play rugby league, but everyone involved, needs us to do a good job and ensure Rugby League is inclusive, fun and welcoming.”

Council defends cleanfill In response to comments made in a recent story on the Wainuiomata cleanfill Hutt City Council has responded defending management of the site.

Caryn Ellis a spokesperson for the council says there is no evidence of inappropriate material being deposited and this continued assertion has now been refuted many times, as supported by compliance audits.

Concerned community liaison group members says they found one of the biggest struggles with the site is getting notification from the council of what is happening, when it will close, how it is being planted and whether any action has been taken over the continued flouting of the rules.

Caryn says there are two issues with this

statement - one is that this notification has been forthcoming on numerous occasions while the second is that the operator is not “flouting” the conditions. “ While acknowledging there have been some non-compliance’s, efforts have always been taken to remedy asap,” she says.

“Regarding the closure date this has been well publicised since the decision on the resource consent and is 19 June 2022.”

In regards to the liaison group not being told council were looking for a new chairperson without getting a mandate from the group Caryn claims this is not a fair representation and the councils intent was discussed in multiple earlier Council Liaison Group meetings.

Nga Uranga ki Pito-One fast-track Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has welcomed the decision by an Expert Consenting Panel to approve the Nga Uranga ki Pito-One (Ngauranga to Petone) section of Te Ara Tupua - the shared path connecting Wellington and Lower Hutt.

The project was considered under the Covid-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act and is the first Waka Kotahi project to be approved under the legislation.

Waka Kotahi Director of Regional Relationships Emma Speight says the decision gives certainty to the design of the project, which will provide a safer and more connected walking and

cycling path between Wellington and Lower Hutt along the harbour’s coastal edge, away from highway traffic.

“Te Ara Tupua will make cycling, walking and running between Wellington and the Hutt Valley a safe and attractive option for more people. By 2030 we estimate around 2,200 weekday cycle trips on the new path – more than three times the number of cycle trips made on State Highway 2 today.

“This will be the Wellington region’s largest ever walking and cycling project, made even more complex by the need to work in the harbour’s coastal environment.

The consent decision reflects the hard work by Waka Kotahi and our partners over the last few years to ensure we get the right environmental outcomes as part of this essential transport link.”

The project is expected to support approximately 330 jobs, counting those directly employed by the project and in businesses providing supplies and services to the project.

Te Ara Tupua Mana Whenua Steering Group chairperson Kim Skelton also welcomed the decision.

Claims that forests “fall silent” because birds are killed in such large numbers during 1080 poison drops are unsupported by newly released research by Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington scientists.

Aerial 1080 (sodium monoflueoroacetate) operations control introduced mammals such as possums, rats, and stoats that prey on native species, including birds. The introduced mammals are also vectors of bovine tuberculosis and eat significant amounts of native vegetation.

Debate around continued use of 1080 often centres on its potential impact on non-targets, with some groups saying it kills large numbers of the very birds it aims to protect.

Their study was conducted for a five- to eight-week period before and after three different 1080 drops in the Aorangi and Southern Remutaka Ranges of the lower North Island in 2014 and 2017. Non-treatment sites in the Taraura and Northern Remutaka Ranges were studied for comparison.

The study’s results are released at 5 am on Friday 5 February in the New Zealand Journal of Ecology.

Overall, the researchers found little evidence of short-term negative effects on native bird communities.

If implementation funding is approved, the first enabling work on the project could begin in mid-2021. Work to complete the project will take approximately three years.

Final call for entries The country’s first and only portraiture award to inspire a new generation of Maori artists is now calling for final entries for the inaugural competition, with the deadline for submission on 5 March 2021.

New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pukenga Whakaata together with The Office of the Kiingitanga launched the Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award in August 2020 to motivate emerging Maori artists to create portraits of their tipuna (ancestors).

Artists are given an opportunity to showcase their talent on a national stage while competing for a First Prize of $20,000. The Runner-Up and People’s Choice Award provide $2,500 respectively.

Entries are open to emerging Maori artists who have either created an artwork within the last two years, or wish to create an artwork especially for the competition, using any visual medium, with whakapapa connections to the depicted tipuna.

The finalist artworks will be judged by a distinguished panel comprising renowned artists at the opening of the exhibition. These include tohunga taa moko and kapa haka exponent Sir Derek Lardelli; celebrated artist, teacher and activist, Kura Te Waru Rewiri and artist Lisa Reihana, who is known around the world for her portraits and digital art.

Commentating on the award, Reihana says the timing is extraordinary as New Zealand comes to

grips with what we have here in our county “I applaud the Kiingitanga for coming up with this award which is a serious proposition with a generous remuneration for emerging artists. This award is not just for Maori but for New Zealanders– after a turbulent 2020, now more than ever we are looking at ourselves and realise the importance of generating our own projects from home,” she says.

The inaugural award will be held

in 2021 with an exhibition of finalist artworks in Te Whanganui-a-Tara at The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pukenga Whakaata, timed to coincide with Matariki. Finalist artworks will then tour the country.

Our Rubbish & Recycling upgrade: What’s next?

Thank you to the households who made a bin selection, we’re getting those sorted for you now. If we didn’t hear from you, you’ll receive the default size bins of 120L for rubbish and 240L for recycling.

1. The new bins and crate for rubbish and recycling, and green waste if you opted in, will be delivered to households over April, May and June.

2. These will arrive with information in your letterbox on what goes in each bin, how to put them out for collection and your weekly pick up days. This information will also be available on our website.

3. Council rubbish bags will stop being sold across Lower Hutt in June, so only buy what you need till then. Bags will not be collected from 1 July.

4. You’ll be able to use your new bins and crate from 1 July 2021.

Cancelling your current rubbish contracts You will need to cancel any current rubbish collection contracts before 1 July 2021 to avoid paying for two collections. Current suppliers should collect any of their bins.

We will arrange to pick up your existing green recycling crates if you do not want to keep them for another purpose. Details on the pick-up arrangements will be confirmed before 30 June.

inbrief news Three-year licences e-scooters Two companies have been selected

by Wellington City Council to operate their e-scooter sharing services in the capital for the next three years.

Local provider Flamingo and newcomer Beam will take up the threeyear licences from Monday 1 March.

Flamingo has been operating in the city since 2019 and will continue; Singapore-based Beam is currently operating in Auckland as well as cities in Australia and Asia.

The two were selected after an evaluation of four company proposals submitted to the Council early this year. This follows on from the end of the 18-month trial of the e-scooter scheme on 31 December. Lime and Neuron were the other two contenders.

Chief City Planner Liam Hodgetts says the Council received four strong proposals for the evaluation panel to consider and all four could have made the cut, however through the selection process officers agreed the two best proposals were from Flamingo and Beam.

Manu motel pop up By: Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata’s Pataka garden put on a pop up lesson on how to build a manu motel to encourage more birds into gardens.

The workshop is one of an ongoing series of community pop up events and making a manu motel

taught the benefits of having one for the birds and us.

Wainuiomata Pataka Te maara o ngaa Kaimanu Maara Moana Williams says the workshop got off to a slow start due to the high level of interest in the event but it turned into an enjoyable day for all involved.

“Everyone had fun and everyone left happy,” Moana says.

One of the benefits is to have a bird bath also as part of the motel because there is a lack of water for birds during the summer.

“Also when you have a place for birds to feed in your garden it will bring all sorts of birds into you

garden and can be good therapy.”

Moana says a lot of thanks goes to Eddie Edmonds from Healthy Families Hutt Valley for they ply that was meant to be for a different project, but instead used it for this kaupapa.

The next workshop is 10th February for another seed planting day.

What’s Cooking... Ella’s back on her bike in Slow-Cooked Beef Stroganoff Ingredients:

• 500g lean beef blade steak • 1 onion, sliced • 200g Swiss brown or button mushrooms, cut into quarters • 1 Tbsp Gregg’s Ground Paprika • ½ tsp Dijon mustard • 3 Tbsp Wattie’s Tomato Paste • ¾ cup salt-reduced beef stock • 3 Tbsp lite sour cream*

1. Turn the slow cooker onto low. Cut the beef into

strips 5 cm x 1 cm. Heat a dash of oil in a frying pan and brown the meat over high heat. Transfer to the slow cooker. Add the onion to the pan and cook over medium–low heat until beginning to soften. Transfer to the slow cooker with the mushrooms.

2. Whisk together Gregg’s Ground Paprika, Dijon mustard, Wattie’s Tomato Paste and beef stock and pour over the meat. Cover. Cook on low for 6–7 hours or until meat is tender.

3. At the end of cooking stir through the lite sour cream.* Season to taste with freshly ground black pepper.

4. Serve over fettuccine or rice and garnish with freshly chopped parsley. Serve with your favourite vegetables on the side.

After 3 days of racing in Tauranga for New Zealand Junior Nationals at Tect Park Wainuiomata’s Ella Burns ended up with 4NZ in the Womens 12-16yrs 85cc class.

Also over the weekend Kawasaki has a new star rising on the horizon in Pukekawa’s Tyler Brown.

The 15-year-old stormed to the top of the junior motocross pecking order when he won the 14-16 years’ 250cc class at the 60th anniversary New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville last month and that was surely a massive hint as to what might be coming up just a week later and the 2021 New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships in the Bay

of Plenty.

It’s fair to say that Brown, a year 11 student at Onewhero Area School, had done his homework and it was now he who was doing the teaching, taking his bright green MR Motorcycles Kawasaki KX250F four-stroke bike to hand out a few lessons of his own at the junior championships at Tect Park, about halfway between Tauranga and Rotorua, over the long Waitangi Day weekend.

The 15-year-old won three of his five races over the three days and was a solid seven points ahead of his nearest rival, Hamilton’s Nick Westgate, with one race to go on Sunday afternoon, but still it came down to that final race

of the weekend before he could eventually clinch it.

Other class winners at the weekend were Tauranga’s Madoc Dixon (15-16 years’ 125cc class); Tauranga’s Aidan Roberts (12-14 years’ 125cc class); Whanganui’s Troy Bullock (14-16 years’ 85cc/150cc class); Waitoki’s Cole Davies (1213 years’ 85cc/150cc class); Taupo’s Declan Connors (8-11 years’ 85cc/150cc class); Tauranga’s Levi Townley (8-11 years’ Pro 65cc class); Palmerston North’s Hannah Powell (12-16 years’ 125cc/250cc women’s class); Raetihi’s Karaitiana Horne (12-16 years’ 85cc/125cc women’s class); Taupo’s Mikayla Griffiths (8-11 years’ 85cc/150cc women’s class).

Gardening in February : By Wally Richards February is usually the driest and hottest month of the year and the time when a lot of the earlier plantings of vegetables have reached maturity and been harvested.

It is the second to last month to plant out crops for winter harvesting so make sure the empty spaces are manured and replanted with winter vegetables this month.

Watering is likely to be one of the main jobs during February, especially your container plants.

Seeds or seedlings planted out need to have adequate moisture to establish so keep the growing medium moist but don’t soak.

Plants that require a lot of water can be helped by spraying the foliage under and over with Vaporgard.

This will reduce the plant’s water needs by about 30 to 40% and make life a lot easier on you and your plants.

The film of Vaporgard lasts for about three months and will also offer protection from some diseases, pests and early frosts.

If you would like your roses to look really good you should dead head them and then spray the foliage with Vaporgard, it will turn the leaves into a darker, richer green and make them shine.

A problem with birds pecking the ripening tomato fruit? I string Bird Repeller Ribbon around my plants once damage starts to occur and that usually works a treat for a month or so.

The other way is to pick any fruit as they start to change colour and ripen them indoors.

They will often ripen faster off the plant and no bird damage. Don’t put your ripe tomatoes in the fridge as it affects the flavour with sugar losses.

Tomato plant seeds or seedlings can be grown now so you can harvest tomatoes in winter when they are expensive to buy in the shops.

You need to grow cold tolerant types that will produce pollen and set fruit in the cold weather.

Russian Red is one type that will perform OK in cooler temperatures.

The key is to grow the plants now and get them into fruit as winter sets in. The fruit then can ripen slowly for you to pick.

With your existing plants keep feeding them and spray as required

As the weather cools the problems caused by the Tomato Psyllid diminish as they do not breed so well in the lower temperatures.

If you are in the second season with psyllid problems then next season use the cell strengthening kit and solve the psyllid problem easily.

Dependent where in NZ you are and how server your winter temperatures are will determine the success of your efforts.

A glasshouse or sun porch will help greatly and being very careful with your watering so they are kept a little on the dry side.

In milder winter areas using Vaporgard will protect against a possible frost.

You can strike laterals from currently grown tomato plants and once rooted up grow in containers so you can move them around to protect.

Zucchini or courgettes plants are great growers and prolific producers taking a fair bit of room if you have a smaller garden. I grow mine in 45 litre containers which works well with a good amount of chicken manure for their tucker.

You can cut off the older early leaves as you are harvesting the fruit. This will free up room in the garden. If the leaves show any sign of powdery mildew them dissolve a tablespoon of baking soda into a litre of water, add 1 mil of Raingard and spray the foliage all over.

Alternative spray leaves with Wallys Super Neem Oil and they turn back to green immediately.

Aphids and whitefly like the plant so sprays of Neem Oil will be worthwhile especially under the leaves.

Dry times mean that annual weeds grow rapidly, flower and seed and then die if the soil is too dry.

This does not mean the seeds created have died, they are sitting around waiting to the rains to come then they will germinate and be off with a new batch of weeds.

You can use this to advantage to control. During a dry period where the weeds have died off water the area lightly morning and night to germinate the weed seeds.

Once a good show is there of baby weeds then stop watering and let them dry off before they reach maturity. If it rains in the mean time you will need to kill them off with a Dutch hoe or similar.

Backing these Black Caps for redemption With New Zealand qualifying for the World Test Championship cricket final at Lord’s in June, the plotting and planning can now begin.

It will be a game of redemption for many Black Caps, not to mention fans, after the bitterly disappointing “loss” and that term is used extremely loosely in the 2019 World Cup final at the same venue to host England.

While Australia, England and India all have a mathematical chance of being the second team in the match, the Black Caps now have the advantage of time to prepare.

They have made a great start, by ensuring they have two tests against England locked-in to get

used to English conditions and the Duke ball prior to the game.

A lack of preparation was the huge failing in the tour to Australia in 2019 and it appears the powers that be have learnt from that error.

Another failing of that test series against the Aussies was the tinkering with the playing XI. Remember Matt Henry playing instead of Tim Southee?

Gary Stead and co got too cute and the Aussies made us pay in full.

Because this is the golden era of Black Caps test cricket, the team is settled with selection.

While players like Tom Latham, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling and the pace quartet

of Neil Wagner, Kyle Jamieson, Trent Boult and Southee (we hope) all pick themselves, there are still three key spots up for debate.

Is Tom Blundell the best choice to open with Latham?

Yes is the likely answer. While Blundell had a lean summer, there is a lack of opening depth.

Blundell has a test century against Australia, in Australia which always carries weight with us Kiwis.

The other option is batting whiz Devon Conway who has not put a foot wrong with the exception of the fact he’s unproven, and not an opener by trade.

Conway could be considered for Henry Nicholls’ spot at No 5 in the

batting order but the Cantabrian has been a steady force for the team and certainly made the most of his luck against the West Indies and Pakistan during the home summer and I would certainly stick with him.

The debate with the most validity is what to do with the all rounder spot at No 7.

Daryl Mitchell got a test century at Hagley Oval this summer but offered little with his seamers with the ball.

Spinner Mitchell Santner has had countless opportunities to make the spot his own but is not a genuine wicket-taking threat and is erratic with the bat.

The best choice in my view

would be Colin de Grandhomme.

While injured for the entire home campaign, he has proven to be a threat with his medium pace in swinging conditions which he will get in England and he’s been a destructive lower-order batsman with the ability to get quick runs.

While he may not be able to graft his way to a century like Mitchell, I feel he compliments the balance of team well for the task at hand.

It would be a stretch to consider the Black Caps favourites but there must be a bullish feeling with how the team is constructed that they can stone for the disappointment 18 months ago and give this era of players some much deserved silverware.

Big win for Wainuiomata

The Wainuiomata first eleven had a big win in the weekend vs the top placed Petone Riverside premier Reserves on Petone Rec 1.

Batting first Petone were skittled all out for 111 in just 33 overs with their attacking but reckless batting approach.

All the Wainui bowlers played their part with regular wickets and Craig Foster picked up 4 wickets in his tidy 9 over spell.

In reply, Wainui were always in control, winning by 8 wickets with Foster batting through the innings with 60 not out. The win puts Wainui in the top half of the table and within striking distance

of the top with 6 games to go.

Wainui’s 2nd eleven played Onslow in the first day of their 2 day game. Bowling first Wainui bowled Onslow out for 157 with TJ Ahuja achieving 5 for 29. There were some tight moments in reply but Wainui got the important first innings points with 168 with Nick Neary scoring 42 and the last partnership scoring 18 to get the points.

Wainui 40 over team had a close game and losing by just 1 run in their game vs Upper Hutt. Best performers were Jamie Patmore with 43 with the bat and Dom Bartels with 2 for 27 with the ball.

Ulalei’s new generation Ulalei Wainuiomata‘s Flag Football teams ended the season at the very successful annual Waitangi Day Tournament at Wise Park organised

by E Tu Whanau.

In keeping with the kaupapa of E Tu Whanau’s competition of all whanau playing on the field together, this season Ulalei fielded its first grandparent-grandchild combinations. Ulalei Wellington founders Fauono Ken Laban and Masunu Tuisila have taken the field with their grandchildren Ella Laban (9), Aethan (15) and Jodee Tuisila (13) this season.

“The kaupapa of the E Tu competi-

tion is brilliant. To have been able to play with my children was great, but there is something quite special to play with my moko. Granted, I am probably nowhere near as hard on Ella as I was with my kids,” Ken says.

Ulalei fielded two Flag Football teams this team and have also entered them in the Wainuiomata Rugby Club’s touch rugby competition which starts this week at the Wainuiomata High School grounds.

Ulalei acknowledges the tremendous support it has received from many local businesses during the season most notably Bottle O/Fitzroy Tavern and Thank You Charitable Trust.
