eDith lake Wilkinson: Packed in a trunk exhibition exhibition: october 23-november 18 Mary Davis holt gallery, elberson Fine arts center Edith Lake Wilkinson was born in 1868 in Wheeling, West Virginia, where her mother was an influential art teacher.

When Edith was twenty years old, she moved to New York City to study and then teach art. She produced charcoals and commissioned artwork before traveling abroad.

As part of a 1921 group show by the Provincetown Printers, Edith’s work was exhibited in Chicago, New York, and New Orleans. In 1924, however, Edith was hospitalized in the Sheppard Pratt Institution in Baltimore, then discharged for a few months, and finally readmitted. She would remain institutionalized for the next thirty-two years, until her death in 1957.

FROM DESOLATION TO INNOVATION

I

t’s amazing how much things can change in 15 years. Back in 2000, when I was a sophomore at North Davidson High School, downtown Winston-Salem wasn’t really a place I ventured. Sure, there was the annual trip to “The Nutcracker” at the Stevens Center, but downtown was largely a mystery beyond that. A few tall buildings, a few nice churches, and a whole lot of unknowns.

At the time, I was playing guitar in a garage band called Cadence. Like most teenage bands in the post-grunge era, we prided ourselves on being a little edgy and avant-garde—though we were far from either.

Still, we decided if we were going to pretend to be roguish, we at least needed some photos that reflect it, so we set out to find a gritty, urban location for our next photo shoot. I didn’t know of any such places—Arcadia is somewhat lacking in urban blight—but our bass player said he knew of a place that might work. We piled into his Honda Civic and headed to the eastern fringe of downtown, stopping in a barren area along Patterson Avenue between Fifth and Seventh streets.

If “desolate urban decay” is what we were going for, we’d come to the right place. The area was filled with crumbling brick factories and padlocked warehouses, each seemingly engulfed with graffiti and vegetation. Broken bottles and piles of trash scattered along the alleyways. Forgotten-in-time infrastructure slumped silently into the ground.

“This is Perfect!” We thought.

Now I’ll admit: my memory of this day is somewhat blurry and might be exaggerated.

But the place I remember seemed to have a distinct post-apocalyptic vibe, like something from the opening scene of “Wall-E.” We walked down the railroad track and posed in front of a few buildings, peering inside busted-out windows to get a better look.

There were no workers that we could see.

No bright lights or restaurants in sight. Just an eerie silence and the ghosts of big-business tobacco. I left that day feeling pretty good about our photo shoot but pretty bad about the town itself. “That’s what downtown Winston-Salem looks like?” I thought.

“Man, this city is worse off than I thought.”

I didn’t know it then, but this barren land would soon transform from a place of desolation into one of innovation. The area is now the home of Wake Forest Innovation Quarter (WFIQ), one of the fastest-growing research parks in the country. Not surprisingly, WFIQ has a starring role in this month’s issue, our annual ode to Arts & Innovation.

As for those abandoned factories? They’ve been rehabbed into multi-million dollar office and residential spaces—from the Winston Factory Lofts to the Inmar Headquarters to the $100 million BioTech Place. The area is now where you’ll find some of the city’s most innovative thinkers, a few of whom are profiled in our Game-changers feature (pg. 44). WFIQ is also home to Bailey Park, a newly opened green space brimming with public art and possibilities. You can read more about the park and other WFIQ developments on pg. 18.

It’s somewhat ironic, and somewhat fitting, that WFIQ is rising in the shadows of the tobacco factories that built this town. It’s a place where century-old smokestacks now keep watch over cutting-edge labs; where a “Pride in Tobacco” sign greets scientists who are combating cancer. Most of all, it’s a place that continually staggers the imagination, especially when you consider its origin.

So to all the teenage bands looking to do an edgy photo shoot, you might want to look elsewhere. After all, “desolate urban decay” is so 15 years ago.

Postcard Notes: The end of World War II meant soldiers would be coming home to reunite with families and friends. Amid their joy of being home was the sorrow for those who gave their lives during the war. WWII veteran Gordon Gray, with other citizens, began a campaign for a living memorial to honor soldiers who died serving the country. Despite challenges such as limited funds and government restrictions on building materials, War Memorial Coliseum officially opened Sept. 19, 1955. It would go on to host basketball games, the circus, rodeos, wrestling, Boy Scout jamborees, and political figures along with entertainers such as Ray Charles, George Jones, and Otis Redding before closing in 1989. It was eventually replaced by Joel Coliseum.

or anyone who believes that Winston-Salem rose to greatness in the N.C. backcountry by accident or by the arrival of the train lines, there is the life and career of John William Fries to consider. Successful in business, he was active in industry associations, seeking the latest in technological advancements. He advocated for strong economic policies locally and nationally, and he supported his community in a number of civic positions.

Winston may have been a tobacco town, but the F&H Fries Woolen Mill turned out tens of thousands of dollars of wool and denim and employed hundreds. The mill was owned by John’s father, Francis Fries, and his uncle, Henry Fries. At age 14, John began working full time at the mill, gaining valuable experience with machinery and metals. At age 20, he left to attend UNC Chapel Hill, and at age 22—after his father’s early death—he became partner at the mill with his uncle. He would become president of each of the family companies and was actively involved in the daily operations. He

also developed several groundbreaking inventions related to the milling and dyeing processes.

Passionate about history and learning, he later served 40 years on the board of trustees of UNC, where the he received an honorary law degree.

He was also a devout Moravian, serving 30 years on the board of trustees for Home Moravian Church and Salem College & Academy. His other civic positions included town commissioner and magistrate for Salem, Forsyth County commissioner, and judge of the county court.

An outspoken proponent of the gold standard, he was assigned to the executive committee of a national trade group to promote what they called “sound money� (that is, gold instead of silver).

President William McKinley later appointed him to the 1897 Monetary Commission to make a “thorough and exhaustive study of America’s financial system.�

Texas Pete Culinary Arts Fest After a successful first year, the Texas Pete Culinary Arts Festival returns to the Downtown Arts District on Sept. 19-20.

The festival will once again showcase the area’s culinary talent and feature some of the region’s top bands. Admission is free, and food tickets are $1 apiece, with a varying amount of tickets required for each food item. West End ARTSFest The Historic West End ARTSfest will hold its seventh biennial juried fine art and fine craft festival Sept. 27 from 11a.m. to 5p.m. at Grace Court on West Fourth Street. Launched in 2003 to showcase West End, ARTSfest brings together dozens of the region’s top artists and craftsmen for a juried festival. Visitors can purchase original artworks in a variety of mediums while enjoying live music, specialty foods, door prizes, and children’s art activities.

B

eing in the right place at the right time: It’s what many consider the crucial ingredient in being successful. This may be what’s kept Gordon Peterson at the forefront of the local creative scene for so long.

After a 30-year career in advertising in New York, Peterson moved to North Carolina in 1998 to work with local ad agencies. Through his advertising connections, he found himself becoming more and more involved in the local arts scene—first as a patron then as a volunteer. He’d go on to serve on the boards of several local arts initiatives (including the W-S Symphony, Piedmont Opera, and Triad Stage) before transitioning to his new role as executive director of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art this past April. He took a few minutes off from his new job to chat about his love for SECCA and the city as a whole.

“I think SECCA is a gem. I think the history of the house and the museum itself make it a wonderful place. It’s a contemporary art museum, but it’s also so much more. We have music here, we have lectures, we have a great education center.

We’re always trying new things to engage the community.”

“It’s a great place to raise a family, and the quality of life is amazing. The area has a great mix of people, education, and artistic opportunities. There’s also so much to do here—museums, films, street festivals—and there’s always something going on at the local colleges. If you get bored in WinstonSalem, then you’ve got a problem.”

Since September 2014, a number of exciting projects have emerged inside the park. Here’s a quick look at the highlights:

Public art has also been integrated into the park space. This includes an “Art Tower” that commemorates the 50th anniversary of UNCSA, a retention wall mural by Laura Lashley, and a new painting by Nick Bragg that highlights the evolution of the space.

“To many residents of Winston-Salem new and old, Bailey Park feels really inspiring right now,” says Devon MacKay, director of major gifts for the Arts Council of WS/FC. “Just to be in that space enjoying music, a film, or sharing a picnic is like directly taking part in the city’s renewal.”

The Innovation Quarter also holds several on-going free programs inside Biotech Place and other surrounding buildings. These events include everything from Lunch n’ Learn talks to Network Nights to community yoga classes—all of which are planned with the goal of bringing people together. As Yarborough concludes: “We want people to leave a little more proud that they’re living in such an exciting city.”

Bailey Park opens with a bang. This 1.6-acre green space opened in April and quickly became the social centerpiece of WFIQ— hosting concerts, fundraisers, and other community events. Among the amenities are a large covered stage, bathrooms, public art, and an array of colorful seating areas.

The Center for Design Innovation is completed. Construction recently wrapped on this inventive 24,000-square-foot space that will become the headquarters of CDI, a joint technology institute created by UNCSA, WSSU, and Forsyth Tech.

Construction starts on the “60s Series” buildings. Wake Forest began rehabbing this massive U-shaped complex overlooking Bailey Park in January and plans to finish construction by July 2016. Once completed, the $100 million facility will become the home of WFU’s School of Medicine.

HOME, EVEN SWEETER HOME

Tenant Announcements WFBMC’s Nurse Anesthesia Program relocated to an 11,000-square-foot space in 525@Vine in August 2015. With the move, WFIQ leaders said 525@Vine is now 94 percent occupied. (The five-story, $75 million building opened last June.)

Mullen NC, a local advertising firm, announced it will move nearly 150 employees into a new 35,000-squarefoot space in 525@Vine in late 2015. The company is relocating from its current downtown office in the Park Building.

KeraNetics, a local regenerativemedicine firm, recently quadrupled its manufacturing space by moving into a 9,000-square-foot office at 200 E. First St.—a space formerly occupied by Targacept. KeraNetics, which has around 25 employees, is developing first-in-class therapeutic medical products utilizing keratin biomaterials.

Nobody understands that more than the designers at WinstonSalem’s Cabinet Studio. With more than a half-century of collective design experience, Tim Nichols, Melissa Jessup, and Michael Dugas give Cabinet Studio a veritable dream team of designing talent.

Working individually, they have created a myriad of spaces ranging from family rooms to bathrooms, but they’re best known for their work in the kitchen.

ith every project, it’s critical to maintain the integrity of the style of the house,” says designer Melissa Jessup.

“You don’t just ‘do’ a kitchen; you have to feel the space and listen to the house. It will tell you what it needs.”

It’s that kind of commitment that brought clients Lisa and Donald Cockerham to Jessup, who has 23 years of design experience. Remodeling the Cockerhams’ 54-year-old house came with many challenges—especially in the kitchen.

Luckily, the Cockerhams had worked with Cabinet Studio before and knew the company would deliver.

“Melissa incorporated our every wish for a new kitchen and came up with a beautiful design that was not only modern but celebrated the tradition of the original home,” says Lisa. “From the choices of products, the superior installation, and the design of the kitchen, every step of the process was seamless.”

One of the many design elements Jessup brought to the project was a custom peninsula that created a “hug” in the room and made the space cozy. As her clients will attest, Jessup has a unique ability to tie different elements together to transform a space. It’s one of the reasons she’s earned numerous design awards in her field, including Grand Prize in the 2011 Well Appointed Interior Design Competition.

For another one of her clients, Joe and Kathy Ely, Jessup guided them through a multitude of options involved in their major kitchen/laundry renovation. Kathy says she’s still “amazed” that they ended up with so much storage, counter, work, and entertaining space, considering the number of doors and angles in the original kitchen design. “This renovation improved the livability of our home by about 100 percent,” she exclaims.

“I wanted to ‘wow’ [the Elys] with something really different,” Jessup recalls.

hey call themselves The Diamonds in the Ruff, or simply, The Diamonds— eight members of a local bridge club that includes Karen Rodgers, Melissa Workman, and Jan Sprinkle. The closest of friends, this “eclectic group of ladies” share more than a passion for bridge; they’ve shared the design talents of Tim Nichols, Cabinet Studio’s most seasoned designer. With 27 years of experience, Nichols has a long list of happy customers, thanks to his attention to proportion, color choices, and use of quality materials.

Karen and Richard Rodgers were the first bridge-club clients to hire Nichols. “[The Rodgers’] project started as a discussion on how to tweak and update their existing kitchen,” recalls Nichols.

Built in 1925, the Workmans’ kitchen presented a different sort of challenge for Nichols. The space was separated from the

rest of the house by a back hallway and a breakfast nook. Nichols decided to remove the wall between the kitchen and the nook in order to connect the space to the rest of the house. “Everything flows so much better now,” he says.

Just as Nichols was putting the finishing touches on the Workmans’ kitchen, he was hired by a third member of the bridge club, Jan Sprinkle. As always, Nichols considered the family’s lifestyle and their individual preferences while designing the Sprinkles’ kitchen (not pictured). “We removed walls, added walls, changed entryways … just completely started over,” Sprinkle says.

“And we couldn’t be happier with it.”

Like many of Nichols’ benefactors, Sprinkle says, “I only wish that we had done it sooner.”

W

hen Wilda Herman lost her husband in 2012, she moved back to North Carolina from Florida to live in the home she and her husband had built together in the late 1980s. After adding a patio to the house, Herman turned her attention to the kitchen—a dated and impractical layout of storage cabinets and appliances that was illsuited for entertaining guests. Herman hired 28 winston-salem monthly

Michael Dugas, Cabinet Studio’s newest designer, to give the space a new look and layout—and he didn’t disappoint.

“My opinion of Michael Dugas?” Herman says with a look of delight. “Over the top!”

Known for his adaptability and contagious enthusiasm, Dugas added an island large enough to seat up to 10 people in a space that was originally standing-room only. The designer also tied the kitchen to the home’s new outdoor space by using the patio’s double-arched accents in the designs of the glass cabinet doors and pendant lights.

A reworked fireplace that matches the island was the finishing touch. “When guests walk

into the kitchen today,” says Herman, “their reaction is WOW!” Another one of Dugas’ clients—William and Katie Woltz—started thinking about a kitchen remodel well before they moved into their new house. After settling on a home, they selected Dugas to renovate the kitchen area. Dugas opted to remove a wall between the kitchen and the dining room, freeing him up to create a three-sided island that seated five people and overlooked the home’s beautiful backyard.

Public art in Winston-Salem isn’t restricted to downtown streets.

Some of the city’s finest examples are tucked inside our two major medical institutes—Wake Forest Baptist and Novant Forsyth—offering comfort and healing to those who need it most.

The following takes a closer look at each medical center’s public artwork and various art-related initiatives.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center With a focus on local art and temporary exhibits, the artwork at WFBMC is ever-changing.

ABOUT THE ART “Lantana Butterfly and Cosmos Ladybug” (ABOVE). A butterfly feasting on a clump of yellow lantana, a ladybug perched on soft pink petals. These photographs in WFBMC’s Sticht Gallery 1 reflect the intent of Lewisville photographer Terri Burke: “to share what I see through my lens.” She adds, “the technology of making pictures is ever-changing, but the simple pleasure of a well-made image is timeless.”

“Dragon Fly Sun God” (RIGHT) “The transformation of an element through fire into an object that can be held in your hand seems quite magical,” asserts Dona McNeill, of the process that inspires tabletop sculptures of angels, wizards, and sun gods. Working with Raku and stoneware, McNeill experiments with texture, patterns, and color in her figures, currently on view in the Reynolds Gallery—and in collections worldwide.

At Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, there are no less than nine public galleries containing artworks that rotate on a quarterly basis, not to mention pieces at the Family Medicine Clinic at Five Points, Davie Hospital, and 525@Vine. On average, about 120 temporary artworks are installed before they are switched out (the current exhibits are on view until Oct. 1).

Barbara Cullen, art curator for the everchanging galleries at Baptist, explains that stimulating the employees is one reason for keeping the art moving.

“If you go through the Sticht Center 1,000 times a day, it becomes a part of your brain pattern,” she says. “If you see new things, your brain goes, ‘Whoa!’ Rotating art is part of what we do.”

Most of the works are creations of local, state, and some regional artists who, for three months of the year, get free exposure—and in some cases make a sale. Additionally, the medical center hosts an employee art show featuring the talents of physicians and staff (among the standouts installed through month’s end are nature and travel photos by oncologist Dr. Kathryn Greveson), and on occasion has presented a one-person show.

The moving collections are all a part of the Arts & Health program (see more on pg. 38), as are the thousands of permanent works, most of them in patients’ rooms and unavailable to the public, though one can see some permanent fixtures in the medical center’s lobbies, Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Davis Memorial Chapel. We’ll take a look at some examples of the ephemeral and the permanent—all beautiful, all healing.

ABOUT THE ART

“Morning Detour” Though their ingredients are oil and canvas, these doughnuts by Raleigh artist V.L. Rees in Sticht Gallery 2 scream “Hot Now”—the impetus for any morning detour.

As one in a series of painted confections—including pies, cakes, and parfaits—the canvas is an example of contemporary realism and the artist’s appreciation of the beauty in everyday items.

Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center

With a dazzling mix of permanent pieces, Forsyth’s art collection could rival the country’s finest museums.

“Novant Health has long held the point of view that as a community hospital, it is vital that we be part of the fabric of this community,” says Sharon Nelson, who is responsible for community engagement for the greater Winston-Salem market. And, given the heavy arts focus in the Twin City, that means supporting local artists and artistic endeavors.

As a result, Novant has become a collector of artworks, many of which were purchased from local galleries, juried shows, and visual arts membership organizations.

(At one point, the medical center engaged artist Nick Bragg on staff as an art buyer.)

Other works were commissioned through the Novant Health Foundation Forsyth Medical Center.

Major Gifts Officer Dr. Elms Allen is a retired oncologist and former director of the Derrick. L. Davis Cancer Center—and an avid art collector himself. “We have always had art in offices where I’ve been, because it’s very therapeutic for patients and their families,” he observes.

Allen has commissioned various pieces for Forsyth Medical Center and oversees donations, such as the 400-some paintings that local artist Elaine Dowdell left to the hospital upon her death in 2014. Many of Dowdell’s canvases and works by others appear throughout Novant’s hallways. lobbies, and common areas, while others are available for sale.

Prior to Dowdell’s gift, Novant took inventory of its entire collection. The total count: about 2,100 works. The following offers but a handful of examples of art that beautify, comfort, and heal.

ABOUT THE ART “Fall Bouquet, Glorious Burst of Fall, Fall Dazzle” (TOP) Also in the Watlington Gallery is this set of autumn-themed paintings by artist Judi Russell of Bermuda Run. Russell says many of her works are inspired from her personal journal drawings and photographs.

ABOUT THE ART “The Ancient Ones” Found in WFBMC’s Watlington Gallery, this abstract piece by local artist Judi Russell was inspired by Petroglyphs, or cave paintings. It was created with multiple layers of hand-painted and hand-stamped paper. As Russell explains, “I wanted to celebrate the many forgotten artists who had the vision and talent to create art that continues to capture our imagination.”

“Le Printemps” (ABOVE) Dr. Brandi R. Page left more than a legacy of healing behind when she departed for Johns Hopkins in July.

She also left a permanent legacy— her wire sculptures of horses in the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

This one, “Le Printemps” (the French word for spring), charges ahead, exuding a sense of motion and freedom.

“The Scripture Window” (RIGHT) A stained glass window in Baptist’s Davis Chapel contains a powerful piece of scripture from 1 Corinthians emphasizing the human body as a conduit for the Holy Spirit.

It’s a fitting meditation for a hospital setting.

ABOUT THE ART

“Shared Journey.” (ABOVE): In a quiet corner of Novant’s Smith Chapel stands this powerful mahogany panel “Shared Journey” by Jane Goco. In an accompanying statement, the artist explains her love of landscapes “as a source of inner strength and renewal.” Wood, she says, best captures nature’s “timeless, tranquil order.”

Forsyth Medical Center offers art programs for patients, caregivers, providers, and staff that includes hands-on visual art activities through a partnership with Sawtooth School.

ABOUT THE ART “Wings of Hope” (ABOVE). A symbol of renewal, these butterflies honor organ donors and the lives they’ve saved. New York gallery Butterfly Utopia created the display, choosing the specimens from S. America, Asia, and Africa, then mounting them inside Lucite frames.

“Hope and Healing” (RIGHT). The 9/11 attacks prompted Novant to commission this glass sculpture from local artist Jon Kuhn, which graces the lobby of the Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center. Survivors’ ribbons are aligned within the wedge, through which light is refracted in all directions. “Light goes in glass and comes out changed,” Allen notes.

“That’s true of anyone who’s been through a diagnosis.”

“Mural No. 6 (History of the World, 2008)” (BELOW). In his signature bold style he dubs “hard-edged abstraction,” local artist Nick Bragg incorporates symbols from all of human civilization—religions, art, medicine, literature, and technology. hat is it about looking at something beautiful—or listening to it or touching it or creating it—that makes you feel better? “Art sort of helps direct your thoughts from being in the doctor’s office,” maintains Dr. Elms Allen, a retired oncologist and former director of the Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center at Forsyth Medical Center.

Recent research is bearing out Allen’s view and revealing more: A paper published in JAMA Internal Medicine showed reduced anxiety, depression, pain, and fatigue in 1,600 cancer patients who participated in a creative pastime.

Movement can help with stiff muscles and joints, while music, which engages most of the brain, can help improve memory in dementia patients. And who can forget the touching images of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords learning to speak again through song during her recovery from a gunshot wound to the head?

Both Wake Forest Baptist and Novant Health are not only recognizing the benefits of art but are actively implementing it as well. Hence, the reason for the baby grand pianos, in addition to visual artwork, installed at both hospitals.

“Novant Health strongly believes that the arts in all forms provide a way for patients, visitors, team members, and others to find respite during illness or stress,” says Sharon Nelson, who heads up community engagement for the organization. She points to yoga programs for pregnant and new mothers, cancer patients, and behavioral patients; writing exercises in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); and also art field trips for cancer support groups.

“Storytelling,” she adds, “is also a wonderful way to provide a really meaningful, positive experience for patients,” whether writing with or without direction, or giving reflective interviews.

“We also host music,” Nelson offers, citing concerts by the Winston-Salem Symphony at both Kernersville and Forsyth Medical Centers, and a volunteer singer/guitarist who visits patient rooms on request.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is taking art therapy a step further.

“We’re doing an IRB [International Review Board] study with patients in the Ardmore 5 Tower,” says Gretchen Bayne, manager of WFBMC’s Wellness Programs.

“We have art in patients’ rooms and in the

hallway,” she continues, the point of which is to determine how the presence of art or creating it affects the patient’s overall quality of life.

The study, as well as the nine visual art galleries and Employee Art Show, are but three components of Wake’s Arts & Health program. Others include Healing Voices—a group of medical center employees and friends who serenade patient units twice a month—and the Medical Center Chorale, a similar group that performs during the holidays. Arts Alive brings performances of local musicians and groups to the medical center, and an artist in residence provides patients with art on a one-on-one or group basis. “Lunch-N-Learn” programs offer educational classes to patients, employees, and the public. Participants use art kits to assuage pain, loneliness, boredom, or stress with coloring books, water colors, origami, and more.

Bottom line: Letting a little art in your life can help pave the road to good health.

hey are realizing the vision of Winston-Salem’s leaders who steered the city toward a knowledge-based economy 25 years ago. Innovators in the sciences—game-changers—are finding new ways of looking at old problems, such as cancer or stroke, or establishing new methods of doing things, from replacing body parts to making cars safer to inventing new power and lighting sources, that will alter how we live.

Meet six such trailblazers, all of whom are affiliated with Wake Forest in some capacity, all of whom are proponents of cross-disciplinary collaboration and generous with praise of colleagues and staff, and all of whom are working toward the greater good.

A NTHO NY ATAL A: BODY BUILDER

Game-changing advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

G

rowing body parts in a lab? It’s the stuff of science fiction, but for Dr. Anthony Atala, director of Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM), it’s all in a day’s work.

Nearly a decade since he made headlines by implanting laboratory-grown bladders into seven children, Atala and his colleagues at WFIRM continue to make strides in a field that uses the body’s own healing properties to rebuild diseased or damaged tissue and organs. The groundbreaking research led media outlets ranging from The New York Times to “60 Minutes” to profile Atala and his team.

Using patients’ cells that are “seeded” onto scaffolds or molds that bio-degrade once they are implanted, WFIRM researchers are

literally printing skin from bio-printers and making tube-shaped organs (blood vessels and heart valves, for example). They’re also making hollow, nontubular organs (such as children’s bladders) that are “architecturally and functionally more complex,” Atala says, in large part because they interact with other organs. For the fourth most complex class of organs—solid ones, such as kidneys— WFIRM is making headway in using stemcell therapies to treat them.

Recent beneficiaries of these technologies are soldiers who’ve suffered the devastating effects of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs): burns, shattered limbs, facial and head injuries. Through a partnership with a U.S. Department of Defense organization called Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative

Medicine (AFIRM), Atala’s team has surpassed the goal of treating one United States service member with one technology in the first five years of the program.

Now in the second phase of clinical trials, AFIRM-II is seeking to restore limb function; reconstruct skulls, faces, and lower abdominal organs; and apply new skin to burn wounds.

“The goal,” Atala explains, “is to get these technologies to our wounded warriors who need them most.”

And what do WFIRM’s efforts bode for the general population? Will we be growing, say, our own joint replacements some day?

“The history of science is replete with people saying ‘No,’ “Obviously things can be possible. It’s a question of a timeline.”

J O EL STITZE L : DEFENSIVE LINEMAN

Game-changing research on head injuries and high-impact collisions.

T

he term “sudden impact,” is decidedly more than a movie title for Joel Stitzel, PhD, chair of Biomedical Engineering at WFBMC and associate head of the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences.

In a partnership with Toyota, his department has developed a triage algorithm for an Advanced Auto Crash Notification System that reveals a vehicle’s crash data: Was it speeding? Did it decelerate or roll over? The info would help first-responders determine the kinds of injuries vehicle occupants might sustain and the level of care they will need.

“Even before you have EMS personnel there to help with that decision,” says Stitzel, “the algorithm uses crash and restraint characteristics to make that determination.”

Road collisions aren’t the only concern of Stitzel’s group, as the black-and-gold sticker on his bulletin board indicates. It reads, “Matt Gfeller 57,” a poignant reminder of the R.J. Reynolds High School sophomore, who, in 2008, died after sustaining a severe brain injury from a helmet-to-helmet collision on the football field. With pilot funding from the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma, the study places sensors in the helmets of more than 100 local children ages 6-18—including the entire Reagan High football team. The sensors track how players’ heads move during impact and measure injury risks. On average, Stitzel says, youth players experience about 300 impacts a season, while high school players have 500 to 550.

While Stitzel’s group is still years away from a conclusion, they’re already finding

some surprising themes. One is that “kids who are hitting the hardest at the youth level are hitting every bit as hard as the NFL,” Stitzel notes.

But there’s a bigger problem: You’ve got over 3 million kids playing between the ages of 6 and 13 versus in high school, and few (if any) athletic trainers on the sidelines who can spot concussions and other injuries.

By placing athletic trainers with a few local youth leagues, Stitzel and colleagues saw many more injuries that were diagnosed and treated than in previous seasons.

His group is now writing a paper on their findings, saying it will be “a good message to get out to youth football organizations around the country,” he says. “This resource would be really valuable to have for the safety of the players.”

Game-changing inventions in alternative-energy technologies.

A

conversation with his daughter led Dr. David Carroll, PhD, director of the Wake Forest Nanotechnology Center, to a revolutionary invention.

“She said, ‘Your phone gets so hot when you’re talking on it. Surely there’s some way you can use all that heat to power the phone,’” Carroll recalls. “So we did. It’s called Power Felt.”

The thin material that feels like wool felt is composed of tiny tubes engineered at the molecular level and collects power through two different means that, in nature, do not operate together: heat (thermoelectrics) and motion (piezoelectric). “As you move, it generates power. As you sit and sweat, it generates power,” says Carroll, who envisions uses for Power Felt in cell-phone covers,

jacket linings, or airplane seat upholstery: “It pretty much generates power no matter what: vibrations from the floor, sitting on the desk, putting my cellphone on the dash as I drive, leaving my cellphone in the car with the windows up on a hot summer day.”

Carroll’s group has also figured out how to generate light without heat with the FIPEL (field-induced polymer electroluminescent technology).

“It’s a thin film,” Carroll explains. “You can print it, you can spray it. You can make it any color you want. You can also make it brighter than any light.”

Whether bulb, panel, or a safety strip on clothing, a FIPEL is activated by field waves, much like microwaves in an oven.

And, says Carroll, “It’s twice as efficient as

an LED ... and very inexpensive.” Enter Ljus (pronounced “loose”). Named for the Swedish word for “light,” Ljus spun off from the Nanotech Center in 2014 and applies FIPEL technology to lighting devices called OLEVs (organic light-emitting varactors).

“With the OLEV lights you can change the spectrum,” says Ljus CEO Bob Summers,. “So they’re the closest things to mimicking the sun—and great for greenhouses, or resetting travelers’ and night shift workers’ diurnal rhythms.”

If the planets align, Summers hopes to have the company’s first product on the market by 2016, with an eye toward keeping manufacturing local.

“It creates jobs,” he says, “and and, well ... makes a bright future for Winston-Salem.”

“W

e’re science nerds! We can do anything!’” Patricia Gallagher, PhD, jokingly describes the impulse that led her and her colleague, Ann Tallant, PhD to apply a peptide hormone called Angiotensin-(1-7) to a dish of cancer cells—thus making a remarkable cancer-fighting discovery. It was an unusual step for the two scientists who work at WFU School of Medicine’s Hypertension and Vascular Research Center.

Tallant’s earlier research laid the groundwork: “I had seen for a whle that there was this inhibition of smooth muscle cells growing in a dish, or heart cells growing in a dish,” she says of Ang-(1-7)’s effects. The peptide hormone is a naturally occurring compound made up of seven amino acids and courses through the body. It is only one

amino acid different from another peptide hormone, Angiotensin II, which promotes cell growth. Tallant and Gallagher knew that Ang II levels went down in patients who were given ACE inhibitors, which regulate blood pressure, while levels of Ang-(1-7) went up. Those patients had fewer incidents of sex-specific cancers. So they wondered: “Could the increase in Ang-(1-7) be causing the reduction in cancer?” The results in their dish would indicate “yes.” Ang-(1-7) inhibited growth in breast, prostate, and lung tumor cells by as much as 30 to 40 percent.

After the women published their findings, the phone calls started, including a wrenching one from a fellow whose wife had metastatic breast cancer. “He said, ‘Please, I don’t know what to do,’” Gallagher recalls. It

was a crossroads for the two cardiovascular scientists. Should they continue down the path Ang-(1-7) had taken them? “You follow where the science leads,” Tallant maintains.

A mouse study, several grants, and two clinical trials later, the scientists are seeing more benefits of Ang-(1-7): It inhibits fibrosis, inflammation, and opens up tangled blood vessels near tumors, making it a potentially powerful companion with which to deliver chemotherapeutics. The peptide hormone also protects the heart, which can suffer damage from cancer drugs and radiation. And it’s cheap to make. With the help of Wake Forest Innovations, the women have created several modifications of Ang(1-7) that they hope will get to market—all because they wondered, “What if?”

Game-changing research on stroke prevention.

“I

t shocked me that there was so much publicity on this topic in our guideline,” says Dr. Cheryl Bushnell. A professor of neurology and director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Wake Forest Baptist Health, Bushnell is referring to a 2014 publication dedicated to stroke prevention in women. “We mainly tried to get across how vital it was for women, including young women, to check their blood pressure.” This goes for pregnant women or women who had a complication in pregnancy related to blood pressure.

Lifestyle choices play a role. There are medications to lower blood pressure, but, asserts Bushnell, “weight loss, a good diet, and physical activity can be just as effective in preventing stroke as a medicine.” So dial up the fruits and veggies, and dial down the salt, which can elevate blood pressure.

And if stroke should occur? Bushnell’s team at the Stroke Center has devised a program called TRACS (Transition Coaching from Stroke) to help. Stroke patients are inundated with tests and info says Bushnell. “They get home [from the hospital] and they’re overwhelmed, so all that information that we throw at people is just lost.” TRACS’ strategy starts with a follow-up phone call to reiterate that info prior to a visit to the clinic. Nurse practitioners play a crucial role, contacting patients, assessing their overall well being, caregiver status, and whether they’re continuing prescribed medications and therapies. This window of time is particularly crucial for older women, as they tend to fare worse after a stroke than men, experiencing more pain, problems with mobility, self-care, doing usual activities, and depression.

Bushnell is currently using a grant to study the effects of insulin, when administered through the nasal cavity, on stroke patients’ memory and cognitive function.

“I’ll have plenty to keep me busy for the rest of my career,” she laughs.

Come along for a trip down the Creative Corridors, a project that’s being called a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for Winston-Salem.

The Green Street Pedestrian Bridge is one of six “priority projects” established by the Creative Corridors Coalition. With its soaring arches, the bridge will serve as the western gateway to downtown.

t’s just a one-mile stretch of highway, consisting of a few lanes, exit ramps, and nearly a dozen overpasses.

But it’s a road that’s been the catalyst for countless meetings, proposals, and out-of-the-box ideas—and one that could serve as the defining image of WinstonSalem for decades to come.

“We’ve been talking about this [project] for eight years,” says Lee French. “To me, it represents a generational moment of truth. It’s our chance to make a grand statement about who we are as a community.”

The project he’s referring to is Creative Corridors, an ambitious initiative which aims to add some artistic oomph to a stretch of Business 40 that’s set to close for a multiyear renovation. French, board chairman of the Creative Corridors Coalition (CCC), adds that the project could be a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Starting next year, the North Carolina DOT will begin implementing a four-year, $90 million renovation project along a one-mile section of Business 40 through downtown. By 2018, the freeway will be completely closed from Peters Creek Parkway to U.S. 52 as crews complete the overhaul. The roadway will be repaved, entrance ramps will be lengthened or eliminated, and 11 aging bridges will be replaced. The overriding goal is to streamline traffic and improve conditions along the nearly 60-year-old highway.

Of course, all of that was going to happen with or without the Creative Corridors project, as the state is footing the bill for the basic highway improvements—all of which should be completed by 2020. But French and others realized the project presented an opportunity to make artistic enhancements along the freeway—“grand gestures,” as he calls them. And thus, the Creative Corridors Coalition was born.

Organized by the Arts Council of WS/FC and the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, the group held its first official meeting in 2009.

“Our prevailing thought was, ‘Hey, if we’re going to spend $200 million on roadways anyway, why not build something incredible?” says French. “To me, doing nothing is unacceptable.”

After holding a number of public-input meetings, Creative Corridors decided to focus its attention on six priority projects (detailed on pg. 62). This includes the beautification of three bridges that cross Business 40—the Peters Creek Parkway Bridge, the Green Street Bridge, and the Strollway Bridge—along with streetscape betterments along Business 40 and MLK Jr. Drive.

These betterments don’t come free, however—hence Creative Corridors’ goal to raise around $5.2 million in donations to help pay for the projects. These donations will be used in correlation with several state and federal grants as well as $3 million in bond money that city voters approved last fall.

CCC will hold a capital campaign starting this month in hopes of raising the additional $5.2 million (or so) needed to complete the project. (The project will cost 60 winston-salem monthly

around $15 million total, but $10 million of that has already been identified through public sources.)

In addition to the capital campaign, the group is talking to major donors and has already secured some: $250,000 from the John and Anna Hanes Foundation, $200,000 from the James G. Hanes Memorial Fund, and $100,000 from an anonymous donor.

Currently, the group’s three bridge designs and other beautication projects are being studied by the DOT to determine the cost delta (i.e. the differential to construct “enhanced” roads and bridges versus what a standard road or bridge would cost.) The cost estimations are based on CCC-funded engineering studies; they’ll know the actual estimates for the project later this year once state transportation officials are finished reviewing the project.

French breaks down the process step by step: “In order for this to become reality, a few things need to happen.

First, the DOT will get the cost differential to build the enhanced bridges. Then they’ll present the amount to the City Council and say, ‘Here’s the cost; do you want us to build these enhanced bridges? And if so, are you going to pay us the cost difference?’ The City Council will then turn to Creative Corridors and say, ‘Are you guys willing to cover the cost differential (estimated at $5.2 million)?’

It will then be up to us to bridge the financial gap.”

State officials say they’ll need an answer soon from the city on how many of the CCC improvements to make.

They have to have the designs ready for the construction bid on the project to be awarded next summer.

Excitement for the project escalated in July when Creative Corridors held a public-reveal event at

Hanesbrands Theatre. In addition to unveiling the design renderings, the event gave the public a chance to meet each of the three bridge designers—Donald MacDonald, Walter Hood, and Larry Kirkland.

“In order to be taken seriously, we knew we needed to bring in world-class talent to design the bridges,” French says. “We have one chance to do these bridges right; why not bring in the best designers in the world?”

The designers were each assigned a different project.

Kirkland, a public-art designer from D.C., was assigned the Peters Creek Parkway Bridge. Hood, a landscape architect from California, was assigned the Strollway Bridge. And MacDonald, an architect from San Francisco, was assigned the Green Street Bridge as well as the “Twin Arch” structure on U.S. 52. Each of the designers spent a lot of time in Winston-Salem, studying the landscape and searching for inspiration.

“When you drive though this town at 50 miles per hour, you should come away with an image,” MacDonald said. “I saw these Moravian arches everywhere … I saw [oak] trees without leaves … I saw the domed Wells Fargo building; and I said, ‘I’m going to reinforce those ideas.’”

While the three aforementioned bridges will get special treatment, the remaining eight bridges being reconstructed will have elevated design standards thanks to the CCC Master Plan. Creative Corridors is also calling for aesthetic improvements along Business 40 such as the use of brick instead of standard concrete on the retaining walls.

(NOTE: A provision to the N.C. budget might eliminate around $4 million in state aid that was to be used to upgrade the appearance of noise and retaining walls along the highway. Local representatives are now in talks with state officials in hopes of re-securing the $4 million.)

The changes—both logistic and aesthetic—are sorely needed along Business 40, which was built before current freeway standards were in place. Creative Corridors worked alongside the DOT to determine which of the highway’s ramps should remain and which should be eliminated. After holding a series of public meetings, it was determined that Cherry and Marshall Street will become the main access point for downtown. The Broad Street interchange will go away, and the Peters Creek Parkway interchange will be completely redone.

“We will be living with this roadway for the next 70 or so years,” says French. “We might as well get it right.

The project is about beautifying and uniting the area as a whole. We can reconnect our city in a way that we haven’t been able to since those roadways were built in the 1950s.”

When viewed as a whole, it’s easy to see why leaders at Creative Corridors think the project is such a no-brainer. It takes what’s essentially a routine paving project and turns it into a world-class statement about who we are as a city—a place of dreamers and doers; a place of cooperators and collaborators; a place that’s unquestionably the ‘city of arts and innovation.’

“It’s a once-in-a lifetime opportunity,” French concludes. “Aside from branding our community to visitors, I think the project will send a message to locals as well. It’s a symbol of what can be done if we all work together. It says, ‘Hey, if we can accomplish this largescale, wild-eyed project, what can’t we accomplish?’”

ince organizing, Creative Corridors has focused on the mantra GAIN— Green, Artful, Iconic Network—aiming to build a set enhanced bridges and roadways that would spur economic development and community connectivity. Working with community leaders and design professionals, the group established a Master Plan that focuses on six “priority projects,” which we’ve decided to take a closer look at.

Strollway Pedestrian Bridge Designed by famed landscape-designer Walter Hood, this wildly inventive structure will turn the Strollway crossing of Business 40 into a “land bridge” that takes people over the freeway without taking them out of nature. This “park over the highway” would include a 12-foot-wide walkway and planting beds containing a variety of native plants and ornamental trees. If built, the bridge would be the only one of its kind in North Carolina.

Green Street Pedestrian Bridge Designed by world-renowned architect Donald MacDonald—designer of the San Francisco Bay Bridge—this pedestrian overpass will cross over Business 40 and connect the West Salem neighborhood with BB&T Ballpark.

MacDonald designed the structure to serve as an iconic western gateway into downtown, taking his inspiration from Winston-Salem’s omnipresent Moravian arches and ubiquitous oak trees.

Peters Creek Parkway Bridge Public-art designer Larry Kirkland was commissioned to develop the bridge over Peters Creek Parkway, believed to be the most challenging of the three bridge projects (primarily because it requires the inclusion of soundbarriers). Kirkland’s solution was to introduce a glass barrier wall and plinths, or columns, that flank the bridge at both ends. The plinths will feature Moravian star-inspired spires made of glass, LED, and stainless steel that will illuminate from within at night.

Twin Arches / Salem Creek Connector Like the Green Street Bridge, this Donald MacDonald-designed structure takes visual cues from the Moravian arches found throughout the WinstonSalem community. What sets it apart from the other bridges is that it’s not actually a bridge at all—it’s two overlapping “twin arches” that will soar over the planned interchange at U.S. 52 and Research Parkway. If all goes to plan, the $1 million project should be completed in the fall of 2016 when the U.S. 52 upgrades are finished.

MLK Jr. Drive Betterments While it’s often the most overlooked of Creative Corridors’ six priority projects, this street-betterment project could be the most valuable in terms of economic development. Plans call for a stretch of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to be enhanced with a mix of roadway improvements, landscaping features, and public art. “MLK will become an important detour once Business 40 closes,” says Lee French. “We want to rebrand it in a way that inspires future investment in the area.”

Business 40 Betterments In addition to bridges, CCC is also pushing for a broad range of aesthetic improvements along Business 40 that go above and beyond the standard DOT requirements. One of the most fascinating proposals is the construction of a pedestrian path along Business 40 that would connect Baptist Medical Center to Liberty Street. The path would be one of the country’s first examples of a multiuse path being built alongside a freeway.

1. Donald MacDonald

One of the world’s leading bridge designers, MacDonald is best known for designing three of the nation’s most noted structures: the Cooper River Bridge in Charleston, S.C.; the San Francisco Bay Bridge; and the retrofit of the Golden Gate Bridge. He was initially hired to design the Twin Arches and later the Green Street Bridge.

2. Larry Kirkland

Based in D.C., Kirkland is a nationally revered public-arts designer with expertise in collaborative, multiscale installation artworks.

Some of his most notable public-art projects include installations at the American Red Cross Headquarters and New York’s Penn Station. Like MacDonald, he served as a consultant on the CCC Master Plan before designing the Peters Creek Parkway Bridge.

3. Walter Hood

Renowned landscape designer Walter Hood was born in Charlotte and studied at NC A&T. He now runs a landscape-design firm in California and serves as a professor of landscape design at UC-Berkley. Among his many award-winning projects are the MH de Young Museum in San Francisco and the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta. He was responsible for the Strollway “Land Bridge” for Creative Corridors.

D

istilling in our community goes back to at least the 18th century, when Moravian settlers produced liquor and beer on the site of what is now Old Salem. By the mid-1800s, corn and whiskey were major commodities in the Foothills. Roads were still inadequate and there was no train service past Statesville, a town referred to as “the end of the line.” Hauling a wagon full of corn to market was not worth the trip, but distilling corn into whiskey made money and sense.

Not even Prohibition kept North Carolinians from making, consuming, or bootlegging spirits. Moonshiners were everywhere—big cities, sleepy towns, and rural communities—and their runners drove souped-up cars down curvy roads and always seemed to be one step ahead of the law.

Yet, despite our community’s strong connection to whiskey, Winston-Salem hasn’t seen a legal distillery in nearly 200 years. But that’s all changing now that Broad Branch Distillery and Sutler’s Spirit Co. are ending the drought.

Both distilleries are benefitting from a new law effective Oct. 1 that allows customers to purchase one bottle on site per year. We’ll take a tour of each new distillery, learning about the process and inspirations behind their products.

Gin is almost always made for cocktails; not to drink on its own. Unlike bourbon, vodka, and most every other form of liquor, gin is made with mixing in mind.

The various botanicals in the drink help add complexity and flavor to cocktails.

There are more classic cocktails made with gin than any other spirit. This includes notables such as the Tom Collins, Negroni, Gin Rickey, Gimlet, Red Snapper, Singapore Sling, Martinez, and—of course—the Gin Martini.

The Gimlet was originated by the British Royal Navy. Doctors aboard the naval ships supposedly created the cocktail— which is infused with lime juice—as a means of preventing scurvy (or lack of Vitamin C) among the soldiers.

True whiskey drinkers don’t add ice.

The ice is said to lower the temperature of whiskey too much, which ultimately dulls the flavor. (Experts say it’s acceptable, if you must, to add one ice cube.)

True whiskey drinkers don’t take it “neat” either. Experts say drinking whiskey straight (or neat) often numbs the senses too much. Instead, they recommend adding a small drop of water to offset the strong alcohol content.

• The owners of Small Batch Beer Co. have announced plans to open a burger restaurant next door to the brewery this fall. The 50-seat restaurant will be called Burger Batch and will be adjacent to Small Batch, located at 241 W. • The former Angelo Bros. building next to Ziggy’s will soon become the home of Wise Man Brewing, giving downtown its fourth major brewing operation. The owners originally planned to open in downtown Greensboro, but when the site fell through, they started looking at other options in the Triad. “The Angelo Brothers building gives us everything we wanted,” says Sam Victory, Wise Man’s head brewer and one of three founders. “A 90-year-old brick building in a vibrant downtown location will provide our customers with an Asheville-style craft brewery atmosphere.” Wise Man is slated to open in spring 2016.

• Congrats to GRAZE Chef Richard Miller and his culinary team for taking home top honors at this summer’s Triad Competition Dining Series. While visiting a home and garden show in California, David came across a display highlighting a front-yard garden. He and Amy decided that they wanted to do the same thing at their new bungalow.

“We brought in bluestone that matches the patio to create a path,” David says.

“The patio and fish pond were put in by the original owners … so we feel like we’re staying true to the feel of the house.”

The “No Mow Bungalow” moniker came about as winding paths were lengthened, pea gravel spaces expanded, and additional grassy patches disappeared.

The Grimes would enlist Mowtown Landscaping for help with some of the labor and began adding plants that would attract birds, bees, and butterflies, as well as provide options other than cutting grass in warm months.

“There is a lot of planning involved, so we break everything up into manageable stages,” David says. “We’re going to finish up with a pollinator garden and then take out part of the existing fence inside the yard to create a larger continuous space.”

Not quite two years to the day since they bought their home, the Grimes have become “parents” to baby Koi, birdwatchers of resident goldfinches, and accomplished re-purposers via a $15 dining table and chairs that Amy refinished and painted for alfresco meals. They host parties for friends and family, have book club gatherings, and enjoy after-work libations while overlooking the fruits—and vegetables—of their labors.

“I would tell people that this garden plan will not make your life any easier,” Amy says, laughing. “But it’s much more fun to collect vegetables than to mow.”

F

ifteen years ago, the Junior League of Winston-Salem began planning to expand its reading programs into a one-day community festival. A few years later in 2004, Bookmarks launched and featured regional scribes. Since that time, Bookmarks has grown into a three-day literary juggernaut, attracting household-name authors and sending some of them into area schools via its Authors in Schools program.

The host site has also changed over the years to accommodate the growing crowds. The festival started out in Old Salem, moved to Bethabara Park, then shifted to the Downtown Arts District. Last year it moved to the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts (and surrounding locations), which organizers called “the perfect locations.” The increased space allowed a record 12,000 people to attend the event.

So why should you—occasional or zealous reader—attend this year’s festival? We’ll cite the reasons on a chapter-by-chapter basis.

“Anybody from the community can be nominated,” says Robert Wynn, director of the Winston-Salem Sportsmen Club, which operates the hall of fame. “Application forms are placed in accessible places in the community—in high schools, at the YMCA, in many businesses. You can pick up one of forms, fill it out, and submit it. Along with the form, you need to submit a [profile] with his or her athletic achievements.”

The deadline for nominations this year was March 17. A few days later, a group of former coaches, hall of famers, and business leaders went through each portfolio to decide which ones were hall-of-fame ready. That group sent those portfolios to the Sportsmen Club for approval. Each portfolio needs at least a 60 percent approval rating to make the Hall of Fame.

This year’s hall-of-fame class was announced in mid-April, and an induction ceremony was held in May at the Benton Convention Center. Wynn says that inductees receive a gold medallion and a plaque, and they are commemorated at the hall-of-fame building, located at the corner of Sixth and Cherry streets.

There were a total of nine inductees in the 2015 hall-of-fame class: Two administrators, two officials, three basketball players, and two multi-sport athletes. Every class varies in size. Eighteen were accepted into the first hall-of-fame class in 1983, and some years they’ve had as few as four. If someone doesn’t make the grade, they’ll be rolled over for three years.

“If the information is not brought up to par, he’ll be off the list and will have to wait three years to try again,” Wynn explains.

A few Hall of Famers are famous, including basketball stars Chris Paul and Josh Howard and football standouts Carl Eller and Ray

Agnew. A handful of others—such as Drew Buie (NFL), Herm Gilliam (NBA), and Herman Bryson (coach at Reynolds)—were notable, but not necessarily famous.

“Besides players, coaches and administrators are eligible,” Wynn says. “There are so many, and it’s hard to judge who’s worthy. People played at different times, and times have changed.”

Wynn has a unique perspective on the Hall of Fame since he was inducted in 2003. He started coaching at the now-defunct Griffith Middle School in 1968, then moved to Kennedy Middle for one year. Most of his coaching career was at Carver High, where he coached football, basketball, tennis, and track at various times from 1985 to 1997. He also served as the school’s athletic director until 1997 and worked part time as an assistant coach until 2005. Since 2003, he’s been the president of the Sportsmen Club, which also sponsors the annual Mary Garber girls’ basketball tournament.

On becoming a member of the Hall of Fame, he says: “it meant a great deal. It represented what I did, but also those who were instrumental in helping me. It was an honor to all of Carver’s athletes, coaches, administrators, and the general student body, who gave us great game support.”

Asked whether many people visit the hall-of-fame building he says, “Honestly, not that many. People ARE visiting it, though. It’s open to the public; it opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. most days.

“We don’t have a person working there,” he adds, “but you’re welcome to come anytime. There’s a lot of greatness in there.”

hen Mickey and Terry Hyland retired, they decided to move from New Jersey to Winston-Salem. Like

many retirees, they wanted to be closer to their children and grandchildren. The couple has a son in Lewisville and became “instant grandparents” when he married. Their daughter lives in Washington, D.C.

Both have found more benefits to living in the area other than being nearer to family.

Mickey, 63, has developed his passion for the theatre. He played Ben Franklin in “1776” at the Carolina Theatre and also played a role in “The Pajama Game” at the Kernersville Little Theatre. “I try to have things going on most days,” says Mickey, 63. “Theatre is feast or 86 winston-salem monthly

famine. It gives me a chance to get out of the house at night.” His interest in theatre began when he was a high-school and middle-school Spanish teacher in Trenton, N.J. Terry, 62, has developed her own interests in retirement. Formerly a flower shop owner, she likes to help out local florists. “I go do the design work without the other business

responsibilities.” She also enrolled in Forsyth Tech and received an associate’s degree in interior design. The couple, who moved here in 2006, found the WinstonSalem Newcomers Club a great way to meet people.

Dolores and Tom Ryder, both 73, also made good friends through the Newcomers Club. Dolores has become a docent for Reynolda House and also volunteers for the Bookmarks Festival. She was formerly an assistant administrator for a retirement home in Pennsylvania and an office manager for Habitat for Humanity.

Tom was a CPA for the Pennsylvania College of Technology. Since relocating to Winston-Salem, he’s become active in local civic groups and the Knights of Columbus at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. He also volunteers for the church’s Samaritan Inn service.

“We are busier now than ever,” says Dolores. In addition to their volunteer activities, they also like to spend time with their daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren, who live in Lewisville. But children and grandchildren are not the only reasons retirees choose to move to the Winston-Salem area.

Sandra and Arden Haagenstad, who are in their 70s, lived in Oregon and like to watch car races. Though most people think of the South as the land of NASCAR, the Haagenstads prefer dirt-track racing—like the type that takes place at Friendship Motor Speedway near Elkin. “There’s not a lot of racing in Oregon,” notes Sandra, “and we wanted to be closer to the action.”

When they decided to move, the realestate agent advised them to rent for awhile to make sure they liked North Carolina, “because we moved from so far away and for such a strange reason,” says Sandra. They rented in Salisbury for several years and continued searching small towns until they landed in Lewisville in 2008.

The couple currently goes to dirt tracks almost every Saturday night and enjoys other hobbies during the week. Arden, for instance, likes working in stained glass, ceramics, and 88 winston-salem monthly

woodworking. Sandra enjoys shopping, antiquing, and decorating. One of her recent projects was to turn their townhome into a Victorian vista.

Barbara and Bruce Mellin, also in their 70s, decided to move to the Triad after an extensive Internet search. They have two sons in New York and Philadelphia but decided to make the move from Boston in 2008. Harsh New England weather was one motivator. Barbara was also impressed with the Winston-Salem tagline, “the City of Arts and Innovation.” She is a painter, printmaker, and writer. Bruce is a retired earth science and astronomy teacher.

“We had never been here before and came for a couple of weekends to visit. We also checked out Raleigh and Charlotte, but we ultimately decided on Winston-Salem,” says Barbara. She continued to indulge her passion for the arts after moving here, becoming a juried member of both the Women Painters of the Southeast and Associated Artists of Winston-Salem. Bruce is active in the Forsyth Astronomy Society and also likes to judge high-school science fairs.

“It’s even better than we thought it would be,” says Barbara.

t’s no easy task to get Melissa Tiedemann to talk about her work with rescue dogs. “I’m just one of many who do this work,” she says. “There are so many people doing so much for animals, who dedicate their lives to rescuing them. I just do my small part.”

Tiedemann owns Bark Lodge, a dog day care, lodging, grooming, training, and agility facility in Kernersville.

But Bark Lodge is so much more for dogs in need throughout the Triad. “We foster, exercise, groom, and train rescue dogs from two local rescue groups—Ruff Love Rescue and The Fort,” she says.

“We also introduce these fosters to some great potential forever homes, our customers!”

For Tiedemann, the drive to help animals find homes comes from a very personal place. “I was in high school with no money and no place to live,” she says. “A family eventually agreed to take me in as long as I made a promise to them: ‘If we help you, you must agree to help another one day.’”

When the kind woman who gave her a home—and a name—passed away, Tiedemann was devastated.

“I sought out a dog to help save me,” she says. “I was going to get a dog and name her Thunder, my protector.

I didn’t find a ‘Thunder,’ but I found Angel—the boxer that rescued me.”

Tiedemann considers her work today to be Mrs. Tiedemann’s legacy. She uses Bark Lodge as a central location to coordinate her work. She collects shoes and handbags that rescuers use to recycle and sell to pay for their work. She coordinates adoptions for Ruff Love by making home visits and helping dogs and families get acquainted. She plays matchmaker by asking families for wish lists and then finding the perfect doggie fit.

She also emphasizes that everyone can help save dogs from neglect and abuse. “One person can’t rescue alone.

It takes a team, and we all play a small part. You can share available rescues on social media. Donate an old collar or harness. Volunteer your time and hike with a rescue. Volunteer your home to keep a dog for a foster family that is on vacation.”

And, above all, she wants to help people understand the richness that dogs can bring to our lives—and that they are worth the extra effort they sometimes require.
