Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s Sprawling Hancock Park Home Officially Hit the Market at $13.795 Million
THE COUPLE PURCHASED THE ESTATE, FEATURED IN AD, FROM FRIENDS CREATOR MARTA KAUFFMAN IN 2016
Just over two years after they purchased their sprawling 1928 Spanish Colonial home from Friends creator Marta Kauffman, Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are putting it back on the market—but not without some notable upgrades and improvements, which they detailed to AD last year.
The designer couple, who have a young daughter, Poppy, originally bought the Hancock Park home from Kauffman for around $8 million in late 2016 and now have the 8,500-square-foot residence on the market for a substantially higher $13.795 million. Comprising six bedrooms and six bathrooms—with a self-contained two-bedroom, one-bathroom guesthouse located just atop a detached three-car garage—the foundational structure and design of the home was to the couple’s liking when they bought it, but, as they previously told AD, they knew that any changes they’d make would simply be “cosmetic.” “We were lucky that the house was in great condition,” Berkus told AD.
“It had been looked after.” Changes that the couple made to the home included installing floors of antique marble to mark off points of entry and transition; replacing fireplace mantels and hardware with antique models; stripping, bleaching, and waxing the existing mahogany paneling in the dining room; adding new fixtures and surfaces to the
eat-in kitchen; and outfitting the home’s many rooms in a distinctly Berks-Brent style—that is to say, in neutral tones with a hint of rustic charm.
“We chose to use more country antiques because they already feel timeworn,” Berkus told AD. “Another ding just adds to the life of the pieces. When you live with a small child, you don’t want to feel beholden to your possessions.” One of the highlights of the home is undoubtedly the master suite, which features two his-and-his closets. “Separate rooms are essential,” Brent said. “When you marry a triple Virgo, there’s no way to meditate the stress away.
Good closets make for a good marriage.” In addition to the many amenities that the home itself offers, the grounds feature a pottery room, a side motor court, and a rear garden perfect for entertaining or just a fun family weekend at home, with a koi/turtle pond, an outdoor fireplace, a wet bar with BBQ grill, and organic gardens. Also of note (and left untouched by the designer pair) is a 200-yearold oak tree that, according to Berkus and Brent, helped sell them on the home when they purchased it in 2016. “We pictured Poppy, and eventually the rest of our family, playing under that tree, and we thought this was a place we could put down roots,” Brent said.

NILE NIAMI PLANNED TO LIST THE ROUGHLY 105,000-SQUARE-FOOT LOS ANGELES MEGAMANSION FOR $500 MILLION. INSTEAD, THE HOME WAS AUCTIONED OFF FOR $126 MILLION, LEAVING A TRAIL OF DEBT IN ITS WAKE.
Real-estate agent Rayni Williams stood under the hot Los Angeles sun, her Manolo Blahnik heels digging into the dirt of a vacant development site priced at $8.995 million on tony South Mapleton Drive. It was 2011, and she was waiting for a potential buyer.
A man emerged from a silver Rolls-Royce Ghost, dressed headto-toe in light-colored linen with a deep tan and dark, slickedback hair, Ms. Williams said. She handed him the heavy roll of architectural plans that had been drawn up for the site, which he slammed down on the hood so hard she said she feared had dented it. He declared, “I’m gonna make an offer.”
“Who is this guy?’ Ms. Williams said she recalls thinking when he announced such a quick decision.
The guy was Nile Niami, then an up-and-coming developer in his early 40s with ambitious plans in the L.A. spec-home space. A few years later, he would start building his magnum opus: a Bel-Air megamansion he called “The One,” which he planned to put on the market for $500 million, making it the world’s priciest listing.
Earlier this year, the financial woes of Mr. Niami’s signature project reached a climax, ending a saga that had captivated L.A. real estate observers for a decade. Mr. Niami’s quest to build one of the biggest and most luxurious houses in American history-a roughly 105,000-square-foot megamansion with a nightclub and five swimming pools-had gone awry amid unpaid debts and a bankruptcy proceeding. In March, The One sold at auction for just $126 million plus commissions and fees, far less than the roughly $190 million debt outstanding on the house, according to bankruptcy filings.
Mr. Niami said through a spokesperson that he and his ex-wife Yvonne Niami ended up losing $44 million on the project, “plus 10 years of my life.”
“He really revolutionized Los Angeles real estate, because he took risks that nobody was willing to take,” said Ms. Williams of The Beverly Hills Estates, who later worked on the sale of The One with her husband, Branden Williams.
