WOHF Wall of Wine

The crux of PNDC 2015’s Health & Wellbeing theme lies within the revitalizing experience of the Wellness Lounge. Open both days of PNDC, go and be relaxed, rejuvenated and refreshed with a complimentary massage, and or improve your form with a complimentary physical therapy and audiology consult.

The Wall of Wine is an important fundraiser for the Washington Oral Health Foundation. This year, all the proceeds from the Wall of Wine will go towards purchasing hygiene kits for more than 2,500 kids across Washington State. Here’s how the event works: in return for a $20 donation, you’ll get to choose any individually wrapped bottle of wine at the WOHF Booth, some valued as high as $100. Bring cash, check or credit card to the WOHF table at the Meydenbauer Center. Don’t delay - this event has sold out nearly every year!

Cases will be shown to demonstrate various techniques. The conclusions of the 2014 European workshop in periodontics covering mucogingival therapy will also be discussed.

Thursday Lecture, ECLS · Thursday, June 11

Learning Objectives: • Understand options for treating gingival recession • Learn when to consider grafting and when to consider alternatives • Learn how to estimate the amount of root coverage attainable • Understand risk factors for progression of recession Dr. Weinstein teaches as an affiliate faculty member at the University of Washington and maintains a private practice in downtown Seattle.

This first part of a two-part lecture relates the most fundamental and unchanging endodontic issues—pulp, dentin, root, and root canal anatomy—to principles of treatment, simplifying our choices among evolving procedural technologies. A diagnostic regimen is shown that can definitively rule endo in or out, and if pain is of endo etiology, it can definitively discover which tooth is referring the pain. The use of cone beam CT imaging is shown as a diagnostic as well as a treatment planning tool, finishing with a logical decision tree clinicians can use when considering whether to save the tooth with further treatment or to replace it with an implant fixture. Learning Objectives: • Understand the influence of endodontic anatomy on pulp degeneration and how the complexities of root canal systems dictate treatment to their full apical and lateral extents • Understand how 3D and 2D radiography with thermal pulp testing can deliver 100 percent diagnostic confidence • Understand how to treatment plan emergency care, endo vs implant, and how you are going to successfully invade patient’s root canal systems Dr. Buchanan is founder of Dental Education Laboratories.

Caries Frustrated by Dental Caries? A Simple Approach to Successfully Managing the Disease V. Kim Kutsch, DMD Friday, June 12 from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. CDE Credits: 3 Hours Room: Meydenbauer 406 Dental caries is a complex biofilm mediated disease, significantly influenced by pH. Caries risk assessment (CAMBRA) represents a new standard of care that gives practitioners an advantage at controlling this destructive disease. Risk modifications, in addition to new products that help neutralize the acidic pH during the treatment process, restore a healthy biofilm, promote remineralization, and stop the decay cycle, will be explored. While CAMBRA appears simple, implementing this philosophy has not been easy for dental practices. Steps on how to implement CAMBRA into private practice will be covered. Learning Objectives: • Describe the history of dental caries and the new biofilm model for the disease • Identify the materials and decisions necessary to successfully integrate CAMBRA into private practice, including how team members participate • Understand the treatment strategies for dental caries and the indications for treatment choices based on clinical examples Dr. Kutsch is the CEO of Oral BioTech in Ore. 24 · Register online today - www.wsda.org/pndc

Records Review Clinical Records Prevent Criminal Records: Do Dentistry, Not Time Lecture Roy Shelburne, DDS

Go Ahead…Bite Into That Apple:The Nuts and Bolts of Implant-Assisted Overdentures Ronni A. Schnell, DMD

Thursday, June 11 from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. CDE Credits: 3 Hours Room: Meydenbauer 402-403

Dr. Shelburne was sentenced to prison on August 20, 2008 for healthcare fraud. He found that his records and billing systems were faulty, and learned that it is critical and possible to implement protocols and form a defensive systemic approach to record keeping. From a legal perspective if it’s not in your clinical record you didn’t see it, you didn’t say it, you didn’t do it, it didn’t need to be done, and it doesn’t exist. To be prepared for any challenge the whole dental team must be careful, concise, complete, and diligent, not just the doctor. Learning and implementing this no nonsense team approach to record keeping could mean the difference between success and failure in the event of an action or challenge to your practice.

Meeting the demands imposed by many patients, the implant overdenture has become that standard of care for the edentulous mandible. This lecture is ideal for the clinician who wants to learn how to successfully incorporate implant overdentures into a general practice. This scientifically based, instructive presentation will focus on diagnosing for success, treatment planning, space analysis, fabricating templates, restorative options and avoiding complications. The afternoon workshop will train the participant with the attachments options discussed in this lecture.

Learning Objectives: • Understand that what you don’t know can hurt you and that ignorance is no excuse • Learn to assimilate and maintain records that can both protect and defend. • Understand the necessity of due diligence and how to conduct records review and internal audits to accuracy and insure accuracy and excellence Dr. Shelburne, convicted of healthcare fraud in 2008, speaks from personal experience on how to avoid career ending errors.

Learning objectives: • Diagnosis, treatment planning and sequencing • Space analysis, restorative options and avoiding complications • Radiographic and surgical templates Note: This lecture is a prerequisite for “Go Ahead…Bite Into That Apple: The Nuts and Bolts of Implant-Assisted Overdentures “ offered on Thursday, June 12 from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Code 25 Dr. Schnell is a clinical professor and Director of Predoctoral Removable Prosthodontics at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Thursday, June 11 from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. CDE Credits: 3 Hours Room: Hyatt, Olympic Tower, Evergreen F Significant numbers of patients are walking into our offices every day with legitimate periodontal treatment needs. We have the technologies and abilities to address these needs better than ever before. As the economic screws start to tighten, the success of your practice is going to depend upon your ability to do two things: give patients reasons to follow through with your treatment recommendations, and consistently deliver optimal results in a way that benefits your patients and practice. This lecture will show you how to do both. You will learn about links between perio disease and heart disease, diabetes, pre-term low birth weight, arthritis, obesity, etc. We will then discuss how to incorporate these findings into a risk based approach to periodontal diagnosis and treatment that will work in your practice. You will leave with knowledge and materials necessary to maximize the potential of your perio practice.

Caries management by risk assessment is considered best practice in the prevention and treatment of dental caries disease, and represents a medical model approach to treating dental caries. There are several therapeutic strategies that can be utilized to help manage this disease. This lecture will review those strategies, provide an update of the current scientific literature and discuss how those strategies should be targeted to address the patient’s individual caries risk factors. Strategies examined will include restorative, remineralization, pH, fluoride, xylitol, probiotics and behavioral management/ wellness coaching. Highlighted case histories illustrate the success and failures in managing the high risk dental caries patient. Marketing isn’t a “one trick pony,” but a powerful marketing platform that is multilayered. To successfully market your practice and retain patients, you need to be current with the times, because patients’ expectations have changed. You need to consider traditional, digital and interactive marketing, not just one approach. This fast-paced and fun lecture will demonstrate an effective marketing strategy that is affordable, high-quality and easy to implement.

This lecture will review a systematic approach to accurately analyze a patient’s dental condition, including periodontal, restorative, functional, and cosmetic issues. After a proper diagnosis, treatment options become more apparent. One option is to utilize composite restorations. Resin esthetics can truly rival porcelain restorations. You will learn a step-by-step approach to recreating natural dentition with resin. Besides anterior esthetics, composites can be used to create an esthetic preview prior to advanced treatment, test drive treatment scenarios, repair trauma and more. Laboratory communication is essential and can make the final new smiles exquisite. Examples of a variety of cases in both resin and porcelain will be used to illustrate these principles.

Learning Objectives: • Understand the systems that are a must for a successful marketing campaign • Discover the number of new patients you need to meet your goals • Form an advertising and customer retention budget Dr. Savage is the CEO of the internationally recognized practice management company, Miles Global. Educational grant provided by:

Learning Objectives: • Learn the proper incisal edge position and visualize the end result before treatment • Learn step-by-step techniques to recreate a natural looking tooth in resin • Learn to blend porcelain and resin into an existing smile for natural esthetics Dr. Peck is an Accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
