About Dr. Wes Day “Space Age Pioneer Dentist” “BAck to the Future” It was 1960 and the World’s Fair was coming to Seattle. Looking to capitalize in on the futuristic theme, WSDA members created Dr. Wes Day, S.A.P.D. to promote the 1962 Scientific Session (which later became the PNDC). Wes Day was conceived as an alliteration of WSDA, and his fancy title was Space Age Pioneer Dentist. As originally conceived and drawn by local artist Bob Hale, Dr. Wes Day had a raccoon tail hanging on his antenna and a small salmon he’d caught with his dental handpiece (see below). WSDA members “posed” with Day (see page 31) to promote the show and its packed schedule of cutting-edge continuing dental education.

A classic, reimagined In this — our 125th year of serving dentists in Washington state, and our last year of hosting the PNDC in Seattle — we thought we’d revisit the little guy, dust him off, create a backstory for him, and allow him to guide us through the transition across the pond to Bellevue. So come along with us, as we travel back through time to 1960, then ahead to the future, when we take the PNDC to Bellevue, Wash. for the very first time!

A Staff Appreciation Luncheon and Fashion Show Washington State Convention Center Ballroom 6A Thursday, June 14 • 11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Tickets: $50, Limit 300 Code: 21 Ready for something completely different? So are we! Since we’re moving the Pacific Northwest Dental Conference to Bellevue in 2013, we want to show you the kind of exciting shopping experience that awaits you in the heart of Seattle’s sister city. Be inspired by street wear fashions, an eclectic collection that brings to life the vitality of the Pacific Northwest, in a high-energy fashion show provided by The Bellevue Collection, and emceed by the eastside’s own John Curley. You may remember Curley from his days as the fun, energetic host of Evening Magazine, the highest-rated regionally produced TV in the country. This is truly an event not to be missed, for the fashionista in all of us. Plus, (shhhhh! it’s a secret) there might even be a special guest appearance by a fabulous Teatro ZinZanni cast member — but you’ll have to come to find out! Buy your tickets early – we know it’s gonna be a knock-out, and we expect it to sell out! Fabulous prizes will be given away over the lunch hour. Space is limited and tables of 10 will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups must order tickets together under the primary registrant’s name.

Technology available for endodontic treatment can allow for increased success in less time which is good for practitioners and their patients. Endodontic success can be won or lost in the initial phases of diagnosis, case selection and access. This course will address some of the everyday mistakes made in these initial stages and some ways to identify and overcome these pitfalls.

Asymptomatic cracks in dentin have received little attention in the literature, yet they represent the beginning of structural failure for teeth. In this course, evidence will be presented to back up this claim, and to help participants understand the risks and benefits of offering treatment to prevent crack propagation. Attendees will leave this course with an evidence based appreciation for early “true” cracks that will help them make more effective decisions for treatment in their offices.

Dr. Hagel-Bradway graduated from The University of Mississippi with her dental degree in 1984 and received her certificate in endodontics from SUNY Buffalo in 1988. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and has a full time practice with her husband in Tacoma/Puyallup, Wash.

Learning Objectives: • Understand treatment guidelines • Learn insurance considerations • Recognize the importance of informed consent Dr. Chyz graduated from University of Michigan in 1983 and has a private practice in downtown Seattle.

Seattle in the 60s

“1960 - on the edge of the future” In 1960, the population of the entire state of Washington was 2,853,214. In contrast, in 2011 nearly 2 million people called King County home. Although the late 60s were a turbulent time in the country, Washington state experienced halcyon days in the early part of the decade — and even could lay claim to a visit by the Beatles in 1964 — when they famously fished off their balcony at the Edgewater Hotel in downtown Seattle. Century 21 World’s Fair, April-October 1962. The World’s Fair arguably reenergized the downtown of Seattle, and was generally a smashing success, even finishing with a profit. The fair, given a futuristic science theme, was designed to leave behind a civic center, now known as Seattle Center, containing arts buildings, a food court, museums, and serving also as a fairground. The United States Science Pavilion (now the Pacific Science Center) was one of the central attractions. Boeing created and installed “a space age Spacearium” in the United States Science Pavilion, a permanent addition to the center and one of the most attractive features of the fair.

A shout out to plaid!

Thursday, June 14 from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. CDE Credit: 3 Hours Room 618-620

The late 70s and 80s were the heyday of polyester, the “spaceaged” fabric. According to Wikipedia: “Bell-bottomed pants remained popular throughout the decade. These combined with turtle necked shirts and flower-prints to form the characteristic ‘70s look. In the latter part of the decade, this gave way to three-piece suits, in large part because of the movie “Saturday Night Fever”. Looks like our members had no problem rockin’ plaid (and wide collars) at our 1978 Scientific Session!

There is an increased focus on ergonomics in the workplace and its impact on repetitive motion injuries. In this session, we will review ergonomics in general, how to increase your awareness of repetitive motion injuries and how instrument design, selection, and various other issues affect those injuries.

Dentistry’s Role in Treatment of OSA CPT Jon Dyer Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an increasingly common medical condition affecting the health and quality of life of patients. There is a vast array of treatment options ranging from lifestyle modifications, nighttime use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, dental appliances, and a multitude of surgical options. Proper diagnosis, classification and patient selection by providers as well as patient motivation are keys to treatment success. The goals of this presentation are to outline the classification of OSA, explore different dental appliances available for the treatment of OSA, delineate indications for use of dental appliances, and to help the dental practitioner predict treatment outcomes. Comparison of Resin-Based Composite Placement Techniques CPT Jake England Restoring the proximal box class II restorations with resinbased composite has been a source of frustration for some dental providers due to the material’s physical properties. Stickiness, tug back and lack of condensability can create voids and open margins in final restorations. In today’s dental market there are new technologies attempting to address

these problems. Devices such as the Sonic Fill (Kerr) and the ET 3000 (Brasseler) claim to decrease composite viscosity, temporarily increasing flowabilty, allowing better adaptation of proximal box restorations. This project evaluated the claims by comparing adaptation in proximal boxes restored using the devices with traditional placement. Regenerative (Revascularization) EndodonticTreatment CPT Regina Mar Regenerative endodontics is a rapidly evolving field in which the goal is to biologically replace the damaged cells of the pulp-dentin complex. Historically, apexification has been the method used to treat loss of vitality in immature permanent teeth with open apices; however, this results in a compromised root structure due to thinner dentin walls that are more prone to fracture. Regenerative endodontics in immature, necrotic teeth utilizes stem cells, growth factors, and a scaffold to form functional tissues. Despite the lack of a vital dentin-pulp complex, this procedure allows for further development of the root, as well as strengthening of the walls from deposition of new dentin. Botox in the Dental Office CPT Mirela Memic It comes as no surprise to many dentists that a patient’s chief complaint does not only include the appearance of their teeth, but many are also concerned about the structures that surround their teeth, including the soft tissues of the mouth and the face. Presently, in many states, the dental boards are considering licensing general dentists for the use of Botox in dental offices. When it comes to the head and neck, it is difficult to separate the therapeutic objectives of the practitioner from the aesthetic demands of the patient. This presentation will focus on the debate regarding utilization of Botox treatment in the dental office.

Mini Implants: Treatment Option in Removable Prosthodontics CPT Joseph L. Rodriguez There is an increasing acceptance of mini implants among dental professionals and patients due to flexibility, simple placement and cost. Mature patients with inadequate bone and skeletally-immature patients with Ectodermal Dysplasia or severe hypodontia are candidates for mini implant-supported dentures. Adding mini implants for patients requiring removable prosthodontics may be a great benefit for them and your practice. Atraumatic Extractions: Techniques for a General Dentist to Consider CPT Jessica Roeber Atraumatic extraction techniques and products continue to grow in popularity as the trend for implant, esthetic and sedation dentistry increases. Are these new instruments and techniques viable for today’s dentist? The goal of this presentation is to define the term atraumatic extraction and to compare new atraumatic extraction techniques and instruments available to a dental practitioner. Digital Impressions: Dentistry of the Future, Available Today! CPT Joshua Sparks Ask patients what they dislike about a visit to the dentist and you can be sure that having an impression taken is near the top of the list. Any dentist will tell you that having to wait for material to set on a gagging patient can feel like a lifetime. Luckily digital dentistry has come a long way in the last decade. The latest generations of digital scanning technology can be as accurate as traditional impressions and offer less mess, quicker lab turn around, and fewer steps. Additionally, some units have the flexibility to offer same day dentistry through CAD/CAM milling. Explore the most common systems, their pros and cons to determine the difference they could make in your practice.

Biomarkers in Oral Cancer Detection CPT Aaron Amano The American Cancer Society estimates that there are over 35,000 new cases of oral and pharyngeal cancers diagnosed each year of which about 6900 will die. Researchers have recently identified several salivary biomarkers that can predict the presence OSCC with an accuracy of about 93%. Current research is focused on the early detection OSCC via saliva and development of a chair side assay. With future investigation saliva analysis may prove to be an effective method for diagnosis, prognosis prediction of OSCC and also serve as a mean to monitor the disease post therapy.

Seattle in the 80s

1970s & 1980s COLLARS, PLAIDS & moustaches The 80s were an important time for Washingtonians — with ecological disasters like the eruption of Mt St. Helens in 1980, political prominence with the rise of Tom Foley to House Majority Whip the same year, to the local connection to the Space Shuttle tragedy (Astronaut Richard Scobee was born in Cle Elum) and Microsoft’s IPO in 1986, our fair state got a lot of press coverage that decade. We saw our population grow to 4,132,400 in 1980, too. Top television shows of the decade were Dallas, Magnum, P.I., Dukes of Hazard, Dynasty, and The Cosby Show, among others. From the looks of it, our members were solidly behind Tom Selleck. Photos: 1978 Scientific Session

NORDIC. SOLID. HISTORIC. The NORDIC story:

What began as a small physician-owned professional liability company has emerged as the recognized leader in the Pacific Northwest, protecting local dentists for more than 20 years. The Washington State Dental Association, largely responsible for helping to create NORDIC, has been an owner and stakeholder for more than five years, keeping the interests of dentists paramount. Because the NORDIC Board of Directors is comprised primarily of dentists, the interests of our dentist-policyholders are met. Originally formed to provide stability in the marketplace, NORDIC continues to offer stable, competitive rates, unequaled claims support, relevant risk management information and unparalleled customer service.

Quality Coverage and Service:

Providing you with coverage created specifically for dental practices is only part of the equation; personalized and thorough service is what you can expect. Whether you speak directly with a NORDIC representative or with a Washington Dentists’ Insurance Agency representative, we are committed to working with you to determine your level of need and providing you with outstanding expertise and service.
