BeginningonMarch4th ,2023,FoltzFineArtpresentsRecentWorksbyOtisHuband. Huband(b.1933)wasborninFredericksburg,Virginia,andstartedhisundergraduate degree at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1955 after returning from naval service.In1956HubandtraveledwesttoCaliforniawiththeintentionofreachingSan FranciscoorLosAngeles.Duetoabrokencaraxel,HubandfoundhimselfinVentura, whereheenrolledinJuniorCollegeandbeganhisformaltraininginstudioartand arteducation.HubandreturnedtoVirginiaCommonwealthUniversityin1957,and graduatedwithhisMaster’sinFineArtsin1961.Twoyearsaftergraduating,Huband andhiswife,Anne,boardedaboatandsetsailforItaly;thepairsettledinPerugia whereHubandstudiedartattheAccademiadiBellaArti.Hubandandhiswifeleft Italyin1965andsetcourseforTexas,wheretheyhavesinceresided.

RatherthanimmediatelycatapultinghimselfintotheHoustongalleryscene,Huband turnedtohisstudiowhereallofhisItalianinfluences-Caravaggio,theFlorentine School, religious iconography- and other European artists including Willem De Kooning,PabloPicasso,andHenriMatisse,inspiredhisworksoncanvas.Huband’s works, most typically oil stick on canvas, incorporate oil pigments that are simultaneouslyvibrantandsubdued,figuralandabstracted,structuredandfluid.His compositionspoeticallyrepresentaconstantmanipulationofthehumanfigureand two dimensional space.RecentworksbyOtisHuband features selected works createdbyHubandoverthelasttenyears.Thoughtheworksarerecentproductions, theyneverthelessreflectHuband’slifelongcommitmenttoreflection,learning,and evolvingasanartist.

OTISHUBAND(b.1933)

Otis Huband was born in 1933 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He studied art at Virginia Commonwealth University and, after a tour of duty in the Navy, attended the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. He returned to complete both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Virginia Commonwealth University and then travelled to Italy to study at theAcademiadeBellaArtainPerugia.

Huband returned from Europe in 1964 and moved to Houston the following year. Upon his arrival, he bypassed the local gallery scene by choice, opting instead to concentrate most of his time in his studio. In addition, he also worked as an artinstructor atthe University of Houston, the Museum (now Glassell) School ofArt, Rice University, andtheArt LeagueofHouston.
