As a gallery specializing in classic Texas art, it is our pleasure to show an amazing collection of over 100 cowboy subjects beautifully rendered in tintype by Austin photographer, Robb Kendrick. Kendrick is, in fact, the first photographer that we have ever shown in our repertoire of WRFA artists, and we are especially proud to introduce his work in conjunction with Houston’s renowned FotoFest 2012 Biennial celebration.

As a veteran and accomplished photo essayist, Robb Kendrick’s images frequently command the pages of major publications such as National Geographic. His credits are prestigious and his shoots have included some of the most intriguing spots in the world. Kendrick is, therefore, no newcomer to photographic circles and will likely be well-known to collectors of the medium.

In our opinion, Robb Kendrick is a photographic genius and his tintype series of contemporary working cowboys ranks among the most significant body of regionalist work produced in our state since the WPA era. Kendrick’s compelling cowboy images have been the subject of two recent books - Revealing Character: Texas Tintypes (2005, Bright Sky Press) and Still: Cowboys at the Start of the 21st Century (2008, The University of Texas Press). Through the images in these books, Kendrick adeptly portrays the character and mystique of the modern-day ranch hand and issues glimpses of the grit and legacy of their work. In image after image, he introduces viewers to a gathering of present-day work hands, calling our attention to the distinctive ranching culture and the trappings of the American cowboy.

We think that Kendrick’s work in this field is significant for a variety of reasons - by concentrating his camera on the subject of contemporary cowboys of the American West, Robb offers the single-most important source of present-day imagery and photographic documentation of one of America’s most unique and storied professions. His compositions are authentic and afford a genuine, twenty-first century interpretation of the life and work of modern-day cowboying.

The fact that he opts to employ a historic tintype photographic technique to embrace his subjects is also significant. Here, the photographer/artist pays homage to the roots of his subject matter, linking current cowboy subjects to their predecessors via a photographic medium that spans both past and present eras.

Finally, the sheer elegance of his compositions, as well as the simple, haunting beauty of these photographs compel us to re-examine the particular brand of man and woman who ply work as cowboys in today’s environment and to reconsider the defining elements of their stature, strength, and character.

For all of these reasons and more, William Reaves Fine Art is proud to bring these magnificent works to Houston and to Texas collectors as our contribution to the FotoFest Biennial. We consider this a “must-see” venue for Texas art-lovers of all media, and one certain to thrill those fortunate enough to encounter Kendrick’s elegant photographic portraits of the proud cattle culture of the Lone Star State.
