In the early days of the 2020 COVID pandemic, Richard Stout, a preeminent and beloved Texas artists, passed away at the age of 85. A presence in the Bayou City art world for six decades, Stout’s abstract expressionist paintings and sculptures made him one of the most important Texas modernists.
Now, five years since Stout’s passing, Foltz Fine Art is pleased to present Beyond the Sea: Richard Stout’s Enduring Legacy – the retrospective exhibition paying tribute to the artist which features works spanning from the 1950s through his last paintings, focusing on his coastal inspired works.
Stout’s paintings do not just depict the Gulf Coast—they breathe it. They exhale its humidity, shimmer with its heat, and resonate with the deep, tidal rhythms of a life spent by the sea. As visitors step into this special exhibition, Beyond the Sea, they are invited not just to view the late artist’s work, but to inhabit it—to feel the salt air and the stormfronts, the memory, myth, and quiet mourning that animate his uniquely Texan vision.
Born in Beaumont in 1934 and later making Houston his home, Richard Stout was a seminal figure in Texas art, revered for his abstraction expressionism and his role as a mentor, teacher, and champion of generations of artists. But perhaps no aspect of his work captures his spirit more deeply than his lifelong engagement with the Gulf Coast— the ever-changing edge where land meets sea, and memory meets myth. In these works, the ocean is not simply a subject—it’s a presence. Here, abstraction becomes metaphor: for longing, for passage, for the deep push-pull of memory that marked so much of Stout’s mature work. Through distortion and expressive color, he created not just images, but atmospheres. These are not depictions of the sea; they are remembrances of it—dreamlike, tender, and often tinged with a quiet melancholy.
As with the tide, there’s a rhythm to Stout’s compositions—architectural forms break apart, then coalesce again. Doorways, ships, and interior spaces emerge and dissolve like relics from an ancient coast. And though some works feel rooted in personal memory—echoes of childhood homes, glimpses from windows—they are never confined by the personal. They suggest something larger: the mythic quality of home, the timelessness of sea and sky, the vulnerability of living at the edge.
This retrospective is both a celebration and an elegy as Stout passed away in 2020. What remains is a body of work that continues to move and challenge, to inspire and console. To see these paintings now, gathered in one space, is to understand how deeply he belonged to this region—and how fully he transformed it into a visual language all his own.
In Beyond the Sea, we honor not just Richard Stout the artist, but Richard Stout the abstract expressionist with Gulf salt in his brushstrokes, the educator who never stopped sharing his vision, and the man whose quiet depth left a lasting mark on the Texas art world. Through his paintings, Stout gives us all of that—and more. The longing, the memory, the beauty, and the resilience. In every layered horizon and elemental form, we find him still—just beyond the sea.
-Sarah Foltz, Mary Margaret Albritton, Laura Bledsoe, Fendley Russell & Eve French
Richard Gordon Stout (1934–2020) was an American artist known for his abstract expressionist paintings and sculptures. Born in Beaumont, Texas, Stout developed a passion for art at a young age. During high school, he studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati during summer visits with family in Ohio. He received a scholarship to attend the School of Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He completed graduate studies and earned his Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Texas at Austin.
Stout’s teaching career paralleled his artistic practice. From 1959 to 1967, he was an instructor at the Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He then joined the faculty at the University of Houston, where he taught painting and drawing for nearly three decades until his retirement in 1996. Through his teaching, he influenced generations of Texas artists and remained a vital figure in the state’s art community.
Over six decades, Stout exhibited extensively in Texas and internationally, with shows in Austria, Germany, Norway, and Greece. His work, often rooted in abstract expressionism, reflected themes of coastal landscapes, light-filled interiors, and atmospheric spaces, creating a distinctive visual language that resonated deeply with viewers. In 2004, he was named Texas Artist of the Year by the Art League Houston, and in 2010 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA). A significant retrospective, A Sense of Home, opened at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in 2017 before traveling to other museums across the state, and was accompanied by a comprehensive monograph on his life and work.
Stout’s paintings and sculptures are represented in numerous museum and institutional collections, including the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi; Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont; Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; Dallas Museum of Art; McNay Museum, San Antonio; Menil Collection, Houston; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Kupferstichkabinett, Dresden, Germany; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and multiple universities and foundations.
Richard Stout passed away in Houston in 2020 at the age of 85. His enduring legacy lives on through his art, his students, and his profound contributions to modernism in Texas.
