Mum Festival gets ready for their 57th year @KAYLA_MURPHY

BRISTOL — “There’s something here for everyone and this festival is a great example of Bristol pride,” said co-chair of the Mum Festival Marketing Committee, Mickey Goldwasser. The four-day festival features a host of events including, but not limited to, a parade, the Miss Mum Paegant, the Mum-A-Thon, a softball tournament, a car show, Friday night fireworks, an art and jazz gallery, bingo, a beer and wine tent, food trucks and live entertainment. “We have everything that you can think of,” explained Goldwasser, “This festival is very safe and very family-friendly. We have a lot of kids activities this year. We have carnival rides and games, train rides, pony rides, a petting zoo and hay rides. We have a craft station, where kids can paint pumpkins with local

artists. There’s face painting, balloon animals, a variety of contests and a sing-along. Yale is sending one of their helicopters for display. And we have a ‘Touch-a-Truck’ station, where kids can see monster trucks, dump trucks and fire engines.” Goldwasser said that this year’s festival will have “more bands than you can think of.” Performing at this year’s festival will be a barbershop quarter, an all male acapella group, a Beatles tribute band and an 18-piece orchestra. Music varies from swing and classic rock, to country and soul. Bristol has been known as “Mum City” for their Chrysanthemum nurseries that were once here. There were thousands of mums and people would travel all over to see the flowers. “The Mum Festival is just a nice way to celebrate fall. The kids are back in school, summer’s over, and

the Mum Festival is a great way to kick off Bristol’s key event. Our theme this year is ‘Fall In Love With Bristol’ and we’re trying to promote what’s great about Bristol. We have over 130 local vendors. We draw folks from all over and it’s perfect for all generations. It really has become a fall tradition because there’s so much to do,” said Goldwasser. Goldwasser thanks the City of Bristol for being a major sponsor of the festival, which took almost a year to plan. “We raise money throughout the year with a variety of fundraisers. We also have a great number of dedicated volunteers. We’ve met with the mayor, the police, the public works, the park and recreation to make sure we create something nice, safe fun for families who attend. My favorite part is just watching people have a great time,” said Goldwasser.

BRISTOL Ð Ed Pelkey, a veteran and dedicated volunteer, has been chosen as the 2018 Bristol Hometown Hero. According to American Legion Post 2 historian Neal Supranovich, who heads the selection process for the award, Pelkey was chosen for “how much he cares for people, how much he cares for the community and for his work at the Chamber of Commerce, Korean Veterans Association and Bristol Senior Center.” Pelkey will be presented the award on Friday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. on the Memorial Boulevard stage during the Mum Festival. Pelkey said it feels “pretty good”

to be honored as the Hometown Hero, and that he was surprised at his selection. “If someone would have told me that when I retired I’d spend so much time on the Boulevard or with the Korean War Veterans Association, I wouldn’t have believed them,” he said. “But when you’ve got the time and you’re with a good group of people then you just do it.” Pelkey grew up in Bristol. He was drafted into Army during the Korean War and returned home to raise a family. He worked as a book binder and volunteered with numerous community groups. He came to be known as “The Man with the Camera” by many. He never ran for political office. See A HOMETOWN, Page B7

Mum-A-Thon celebrates its 49th year BRISTOL — The MumA-Thon road race Oct. 21 and pasta dinner Oct. 20, the final events of this year’s Mum Festival, will benefit the Veterans Strong Community Center and their efforts to aid area veterans. “This is the third year that we have been the charity of choice for the Mum-A-Thon,” said Donna Dognin, executive director and veterans’ assistance specialist at the center. “Last year raised close to $5,000 for us, which helps out with our operating expenses and is also used for programs for veterans, outreach seminars, our ‘Lunch and Learn’ events and for gift cards and bus passes for veterans. The center is in good shape but having community support is always welcome. We are seeing more and more veterans every week — 20 a week on average, easily.” Dognin said that The Veterans Strong Community Center assists veterans in Bristol, Burlington, Harwinton, Plainville, Plymouth, Thomaston and Wolcott. This year, she said the center is hoping to host a suicide prevention seminar in conjunction with another agency in October, which will be made possible thanks to funds raised from the Mum-A-Thon. “The Mum-A-Thon is our major fundraiser right now, though we also hope to do a golf tournament next year,” said Dognin. “Andy Barton, the race director, has really brought the Mum-AThon back to life. He has done a lot of work to attract corporate sponsors from the community and make it a fun community event.” The 49th Annual Bristol MumA-Thon 8K Road Race will be held Oct. 21, starting and ending at St. Paul Catholic High School at 1001 Stafford Ave. A “Monster Mile” run/walk will be held at 10 a.m. and the 8K will begin at 10:15 a.m. Pre-registration for the 8K is $25 and race day registration is $30. Pre-registration for the Monster Mile is $15 and race day registration is $20. Halloween costumes are encouraged for the Monster Mile and a “Trunk or Treat,” where children can go trick or treating car trunk to car trunk in the high school parking lot, will

Pelkey was recognized in 2005 by the Bristol Chamber of Commerce as Volunteer of the Year. “Ed volunteered to help with chamber events and carried his camera,” said Supranovich. “He lent a hand along with taking pictures at events he attended as a backup photographer. When the person who did the photography for the chamber passed away, he took it upon himself to cover the events. He did such a good job he was asked to take over the spot. He took pictures, covering all costs from his own pocket. The pictures were used for stories in the paper, leaflets, and posters and in other items for the chamber. He represented the chamber in events such as the opening of Route 72, the opening of the Sgt. Maj. Savino Bridge, along with special dinners and tournaments.” Supranovich said Pelkey could also be seen at the Miss Bristol and Miss Mum pageants, the children’s Christmas parades and the downtown carol sings, as well as the

duck races. Pelkey was one of the founding members of the Korean War Veterans Association. He helped rebuild the World War II Monument in Forestville and was part of the group that brought the Vietnam Traveling

Pelkey also raised funds for and did work on the monuments that stand on Memorial Boulevard today, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, Revolutionary War and Civil War monuments. He was involved with groups that placed stone benches by the monuments and built the wooden and, later, cement and steel bridges that cross the stream. He also advocated for a cement sidewalk from the South Street parking lot to the bridges. He also helped to build the pavilion and fund the fountains in the ponds on Memorial Boulevard. BRISTOL — Kayla Paulette was crowned Miss Mum Sept. 14 at Chippens Hill Middle School following a spirited pageant that showcased the beauty, grace and positivity of several of Bristol’s young ladies. The crowd was filled with cheering and clapping friends and family members rooting for their favorite contestants, but supporting all of them collectively as a community. When at last the crown was placed upon her head, Paulette grinned wide and waved to the crowd. Contestants for Miss Mum this year included Faith Boilard, a 14-year-old freshman at Bristol Eastern High School; Sofia Circosta, a 16-year-old junior at Bristol Eastern; Paulette, a 17-year-old senior at Bristol Central High School; and Jenna Siemiatkoski, a 14-year-old freshman at Bristol Central. The contestants were judged on stage appearance, interview responses and essay submissions. Circosta was the essay winner. In her essay, she said she wants to fight for the end of bullying and that she wants to volunteer, get involved and promote events in the community. Junior Miss Mum contestant Angela Ragaini won the People’s Choice Award. Mini Miss Mum contestant Giana Lacapra won the Miss Hospitality Award, given to the girl who does the most to support fundraising for the event’s ad book. During her onstage interview, Boilard said that if she could meet any celebrity it would be “Calum Scott.” She said she cries when she hears his music and that he is “amazing” and it would be a “dream” to meet him. When asked what the most important quality to be successful was, she said, “Confidence.”

“If you’re confident in yourself and put a smile on your face you will put a smile on other people’s faces,” she said. Circosta, during her interview, said her favorite extracurricular activities are dancing and theater. When asked what the young can learn from the elderly, she replied, “How to live without regrets.” “The elderly have wise advice for the young,” she said.

The Miss Mum Pageant was presented by Bristol All Heart and Nutmeg Performing Arts Center. Maria Salice, Mum Festival Arts and Entertainment chair, welcomed the guests and thanked Guilmette for representing Bristol at community events throughout the past year. “We wish the best of luck to all the contestants,” she said. “We are looking forward to working with the new title holders at the upcoming Mum Festival.” She also told them about upcoming Mum Festival events. In addition to Miss Mum, the pageant includes Junior Miss Mum for middle school students, Miss Mum Mini for third to fifth graders and Petite Miss Mum for girls in kindergarten through second grade.

Don’t toss your potted mums out, plant them cleaning gardens in the spring, do not trash withered mums that may have been stashed behind the shed. Try planting them and you may be surprised that they thrive and rebloom in the garden this year. Remove the dead branches and dried-up parts of the plant only after new shoots begin to grow. Gardening experts advise planting mums in sunny spots with southern exposure. However, be sure to keep the plants a w a y from

artificial lighting, such as streetlamps or garden accent lighting, as mums are short-day plants that bloom only when the hours of darkness are greater than the hours of daylight. Mums that get too much light at night may not bloom to their fullest capacity, or they may be “leggy,” with longer stems instead of being compact. Pruning or “pinching” mums in June and July will help keep mums compact

as well, resulting in more flowers. Mums desire a rich and moist but well-drained soil. Planted mums will require less water than container plants, but the ground should never become soggy. Wellwatered plants will offer more flowers. Hardy mums work well as edging, in mass groupings to create a shrub-like appearance and even in containers. Thanks to their rela-

tive affordability, mums are an inexpensive way to dress up landscapes. Mums are hardy in USDA zones five through nine. Although fall-flowering mums may not be the first plants to come to gardeners’ minds at the onset of spring, planning chrysanthemum landscaping now can help ensure beautiful plants when spring and summer flowers begin to wither. — Metro Creative Service

Chrysanthemums, often referred to as “mums,” are among the most popular flowers for autumn plantings and landscape decor. But these hardy, often vividly colored plants are worthy of attention as early as the spring gardening season. Although mums are most often purchased in September and October and cast aside shortly thereafter, the plant that many people mistake for an annual is actually a perennial — meaning with the proper care it can come back year after year. By planting mums in the spring, gardeners ensure the plants have enough time to develop solid root systems, including their hallmark underground runners that enable them to grow tall and wide and over-winter. While it’s best to plant potted mums that were used in fall decorating after the flowers die and before winter sets in, some container plants can still thrive and come back the following year. When
