Trash plant workers rescue doll from 600 tons of waste

When recycling was picked up on the Henderson family’s street in Newington recently, a family keepsake went on a road trip to the recycling plant. Luckily, the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority made an unusual recovery that day. At CRRA’s recycling facility in Hartford — beneath 600 tons of plastic, glass, cardboard and metal in the single-stream recycling system — was a 1996 Olympic Cabbage Patch Doll hostage. When Stella Henderson discovered that her daughter’s boyfriend had put out the recycling bin — the one she was using to store that toys since moving recently — she immediately called the facility to see if anyone could rescue the doll. “My sister had given my daughter that when she was 5. I don’t have a lot of stuff from when she was little because we moved from California to Kentucky, then back here,” said Henderson, who was born in Newington but left at 21. “I originally told her I thought it would be impossible,” said CRRA
