A Newington family who lost its daughter to senseless violence is keeping her dreams alive by fulfilling the dreams of other young people. The Elizabeth Anne Carlson Foundation for the Performing Arts will hold its annual fundraising event Saturday, Oct. 22. “An Evening of Jazz� will feature live jazz and cabaret performances, a silent auction, wine, hors d’oeuvres and desserts.

Lucy Robbins Welles Library receives $2,000 grant from Liberty Bank

The Lucy Robbins Welles Library is the recipient of a $2,000 grant from Liberty Bank. The money will be used to continue offering classes and programs for job seekers as well as the children’s “We All Get Ready to Read” program.

Since 2009, the library has offered computer classes to

improve workplace skills and workshops on such topics as resume writing, interviewing, networking, coping with job loss, retooling for a job, and job hunting over age 50.

The “We All Get Ready to Read” program is an early literacy activity program/sensory storytime designed to help

parents make sure their children have the skills to be ready to read.

Newington author publishes new book set in New Britain

The city of New Britain is apparently an exciting place to set thriller novels in. “The Whammer Jammers” is Newington author Stephen Liskow’s second book in the last year with a story based in New Britain. He describes it as “Chicks on wheels, dirty deals, and everything you never dared ask about roller derby.”

Yes, roller derby. Liskow was inspired by his daughter Jennifer, who got involved with the sport a few years back. It began in the ’30s and is now enjoyed by over 900 leagues across the globe, with a particularly large following in Europe. New Britain does not have any teams, but Liskow hopes his book might stir their initiation.

“New Britain is the kind of town, if they had roller derby they’d love it,” he said. “It’s basically football on skates.”There used to be a roller rink in the Broad Street area, where many of the book’s scenes take place, but the characters hold their ‘bouts’ (matches) in the old Wal-Mart plaza on Farmington Avenue.

“It’s a great working-class town with lots of ethnic backgrounds and great color,” he said

of the city, whose landmarks are heavilyreferenced in his book.

The story follows suspended Hartford cop “Trash” Hendrix, who plays the security guard role for the New Britain roller derby team. When one of the women is killed in a drive-by, it becomes his mission to discover the culprit and his (or her) motive.

The detective lives near Shuttle Meadow, the girls eat at the now-closed Vito’s, and gang-bangers get lost in the Broad Street neighborhood.

Liskow taught English in New Britain for 30 years, lived there for 10, and is still a substitute teacher at the high school. He and his wife Barbara, an actress, now reside in nearby Newington, along with one of The Whammer Jammers’ roller girls.

The author spends his time writing, reading other crime stories, going to the gym, playing guitar, using his Newington Library card and giving his cats an adequate amount of attention. He and his wife also like to eat at restaurants on the Berlin Turnpike; a favorite is Joey Garlic’s.

“I like that Newington has that small-town feel but it’s still close to major highways and people are friendly,” Liskow said.

He’s looking to set up some book signings

and readings at the area libraries, but is launching the book into the wild at the place where he frequently goes to watch roller derby, the CT Sports Center in Woodbridge.

Liskow spent a lot of time with the women teams who play there, learning the ins-and-outs of the sport.

Bomely, NHS athletes running for epilepsy

Newington High School’s student-athletes are running for a cause Saturday. They’re running for epilepsy, an illness one of them lives with every day.

Ian Bomely, 16, is a junior and plays varsity football for Newington High School. He is leading the school’s varsity football, soccer and field hockey players and coaches in the Hartford Marathon’s Run for a Cause 5K to raise money for the EpilepsyFoundationofConnecticut.

The NHS Cheerleading squad is also helping by collecting donations from people in the stands at games.

This year the young philanthro-

pist has dedicated his season to his friend Keegan Harrington, who lives in Massachusetts and, like Ian, has epilepsy.

But while Ian’s condition is wellcontrolled with medication and he hasn’t had a seizure in over two years, his friend isn’t as lucky.

“This past summer he had three surgeries on his brain and it’s really affected him and he isn’t able to play sports anymore like I am,” Ian said.

Because of this, Ian had a decal of Harrington’s initials — “KRH” — printed by Jeff Gambino from Image Ink in Newington, and he stuck it to his football helmet in his honor. The boys met at Boston Children’s Hospital while undergoing brain testing in 2009. Their

families have supported each other ever since.

“Keegan’s mom and I got to be close during that time,” said Ian’s mother Barbara Bomely. “This condition has affected Keegan profoundly … Ian asked Keegan’s mom if he could dedicate his season to him.”

Ian is the representative of the foundation’s Kids Speak Up, Speak Out CT. He and his family traveled to Washington D.C. this past March with the foundation’s other representatives and their families.

There they learned about advocacy and spent a day on Capitol Hill telling Congress what it’s like to live with epilepsy.

epilepsy who aren’t as fortunate as I am,” said Ian. “Some of them suffer seizures daily because the medications don’t work. I need to be their voice — speaking out and raising awarenessbecause they can’t.”

To educate the NHS students about epilepsy before Saturday, Allison Gamber, a representative of the Epilepsy Foundation, came to the high school last week to show a seizure awareness video and Ian shared a little bit of his story.

“It’s important IAN BOMELY for these kids who are running to know what they’re supporting,” Barbara said.

“When we showed the video and Ian got up and spoke, the boys were in a state of shock because Ian does look so normal.”

Besides his close friends, hardly any of the students knew that Ian

had epilepsy.

“They don’t treat me any differently, but now people will come up to me and say, ‘Wow, I had no idea,’” said Ian, who tries to live as normal of a life as possible while still reaching out to others who are suffering from the disease.

In the summer time, he works at a day camp taking care of children with special needs, like himself.

“It is very rewarding because I know what it’s like for them,” he said.

The Hartford Marathon’s Run-For-a-Cause 5K race is this Saturday at 8 a.m. at Bushnell Park, on Buckingham Street in Hartford.

Markova shines on ice

Teodora Markova, a seventh-grader from Martin Kellogg Middle School, is designated as an alternate for the 2012 U.S. Junior National Figure Skating Championships in Michigan in December.

Markova competed recently at New England Regional Championships in Boston at the juvenile level — ages 14 and under.There were 54 girls who participated at this level, initially divided into four qualifying groups.

Markova finished first and won a gold medal in one of the groups, as well as three gold pins from the United States Figuring Skating Association. The pins recognize special achievements, such as best spins.

In the final round of the top 16 skaters, the judges scored Markova in sixth place, which made her an alternate for U.S. Junior Nationals.

TheNewEnglandRegionalChampionships was the last competition of an extremely successful and consistent season for Markova between April and September.

It began when Markova won silver at a competition in her home country, Bulgaria. The season continued with eight Open Championships in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York.

All of Markova’s beautiful performances at these competitions were rewarded. She collected three gold, nine silver, one bronze and three pewter medals as well as three fifth- and

one sixth-place finish.

The number and skating abilities of the participants at these competitions were often impressive, especially at the 86th Annual Middle Atlantic Championships in New York City in September. There, competing against 84 juvenile skaters from the whole East Coast, Markova placed second and fifth.

Markova’s competition results this season were the best compared to any other juvenile skater in New England. These achievements and medals come as a reward for her extremely hard work, dedication and love of figure skating.

Markova practices 24 hours a week at Newington Arena. She has a great coach, Serhii Vaypan, who is a model to follow for his students with his exceptional work ethic.

The cute program that Markova skated this season — the dance of Zorba, the Greek — was choreographed by her long-time synchronized and individual coach, Donna Mitchell, another great coach.

Markova will return to competition in November with 17 girls from her synchronized skating team, Team Millennium.

Markova moved to Newington when she was 6 months old. She is a straight-A student, plays flute and piano, is a member of the school chorus, band, and newspaper, and is in the gifted program.

“Be careful when burning candles, using space heaters. Someone brought a gas grill inside to heat their home once and it started a fire,” said Jameson. “My advice is to be diligent in checking to make sure you have enough oil and that your furnace is running properly.”

As a woman comes in and picks up a bag of 15 grasshoppers to feed her son s bearded dragon, Richard Simons and his wife Kaye Passig pause from playing with their ferrets to ask the customer how her family is doing.

The ferrets aren t for sale, but an intricately-marked puffer fish and some cutesy-named guinea pigs are, along with other small animals.

Upon entering the store, you may hear the parrots in the back room calling out to you. They quiet down when Simons offers his shoulder for them to sit on, which is quite often.

We re part of the flock, Simons laughs, referring to the birds sense of familial bond with him and Passig.

The Wethersfield High School graduate received his bachelors degree from the Hartt School of Music Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, funded in part by the foundation. “It was more than just the financial support though,� said DeChamplain. “The Carlsons have attended my concerts and consistently encouraged me in my path. It means so much for an artist to have the kind of investment and support that Carlsons have shown me.�

DeChamplain is now working toward his master’s degree at the University of Toledo, recording two different albums and performing all over the United States. Newington man dedicates over 100 hours to combating hunger

With a staff of only 45, it is hard to believe how much Foodshare has grown since its inception in 1982. What the public may not know is just how much Foodshare relies on volunteers to keep the gears in motion.

In 2010, more than 2,500 volunteers donated over 38,500 hours of time to opportunities such as gleaning, produce sorting, office work and fundraising.

Community members make a difference not only by contributing financially to Foodshare, but also by rolling up their sleeves at the warehouse and in the field.

Jim Okonis of Newington is the most recent volunteer to contribute 100 hours of service to Foodshare. He volunteers his time faithfully each Tuesday to sort and inspect donated produce at the regional market in Hartford.

I’m writing to endorse Democrat Terry Borjeson for Town Council in the Nov. 8 election. Being his wife, my perspective is a unique one.

Having met in 1971, I’ve known him over the past 40 years to combine all the qualities I want to see in a leader. Throughout that time he’s consistently exhibited the highest standard of ethics, and a drive to succeed and improve the companies and associations he’s worked with in his careers in State government, private industry and the non-profit sector.

A typical example of his dedication and hard work as a volunteer: not content with being named “Big Brother of the Year” after over 10 years of service, he went on to create the out-reach BB Alumni group and to serve on the association’s Board of Directors.

Our office walls at home are covered with plaques from grateful associations to which he’s contributed as board member, executive director, commissioner,

various standards committees, and service on Connecticut’s Board for Excellence. His past connections through national association work have garnered him allies throughout the country, where the best practice and procedures are shared from region to region. For instance, Terry wrote the PerformanceBased Standards for Community Corrections nationally for the American Probation & Parole Association, and the American Correctional Association. I’d love to see the energy he brought to State and National service applied here in our hometown.

He is a thorough researcher, a keen judge of people and issues, and a team-builder. Recently retired, he now wants to volunteer his energy and creativity to work for the prosperity of our community. He’s a common-sense bargain our town can’t afford to pass up … so I ask you to vote with me on Nov. 8 for Terry Borjeson and the entire team of Newington Democrats.

Stabilize tax burden on Newington’s property owners To the editor:

I noticed in last week’s Town Crier that the Republicans have a new campaign slogan: “No Tax Increase. No Cuts. Just Hold the Line” — a promise that they can maintain the services the town provides without raising taxes, and one that Mayoral candidate Lenares underscored at a recent fundraiser.

If it were only that easy.

I wonder if Mayor Lenares thinks he can control the costs of all the goods and services that the Town buys, or the (always rising) cost of health insurance for its employees; or that he can rescind the wage increases he is obligated by contract to give them. Can he guarantee that the state won’t decrease the amount of aid it gives us annually, or that it won’t try to shift some of its own costs on to the municipalities?

How, then, can he promise “no cuts” when faced with the near certainty of increased costs? According to last week’s Town Crier article,

it would be by “tapping” into the town’s “Rainy Day Fund” (aka “Unreserved, Undesignated Fund Balance”) — the cornerstone of our balance sheet, and the reserve that not only supports our bond rating, but provides a necessary cushion for riding out any future catastrophic events or drastic (temporary) shortfalls in revenue. This is the fund that already contributes $2,000,000 a year to defray taxpayers’ costs, but is now budgeted to decline again, from $12,300,499 at June 30, 2011, to $10,344,000 by June 30, 2012 — a benchmark minimum of 10 percent of estimated 2012-2013 expenditures.

I strongly support the goal of stabilizing the tax burden on Newington’s property owners, but I cannot accept Mayor Lenares’ willingness to put the town’s solvency at risk by taking such an important reserve as hostage to his campaign promises.

Attorney Jane Siegel has three children in the Newington Public School system, and is an active member in various educational groups as well as a volunteer for the Newington Knights cheerleaders.

Her amazing leadership qualities shine through in all that she does, including her presidency in the Newington Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA).

The goal of SEPTA is to improve social and educational opportunities for students with special needs within our community. Jane’s efforts as President of SEPTA have not gone unnoticed and her social action and positive energy ripples into the everyday lives of Newington’s future leaders.

Jane grew up in Newington, and when it came time to choose a place to raise her children, did not hesitate to choose our schools and our town with her own precious children. She has enthusiasm for education, and has demonstrated that in her own educational background.

Attorney Jane Ancona Siegel is a

1992 graduate of the University of Connecticut, School of Law. While in law school, she was a moot court finalist and clerked at the UConn Legal Clinic in Hartford, Conn.

In February of 1995, Attorney Siegel opened a law firm with her brother Ben Ancona. The family business continues to thrive due to the efforts of these fine attorneys.

Jane’s contributions to the Newington Board of Education would be a huge asset to all children in our community, as she will devote her time and energy to ensuring that each child learns and grows in a positive environment that is conducive to challenging each and every child.

FLU CLINICS: Seasonal flu vaccination is now recommended for everyone age 6 months and older. As usual, the flu vaccine protects people from the three strains of influenza that are likely to be circulating this flu season. For the 2011-2012 season, the vaccine is comprised of A/California/7/2009 (H1N1), A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2), and B/Brisbane/60/2008. Flu vaccines provide annual protection and flu strains change regularly, so it is important to get a new flu shot every year. Woods against tapping rainy day fund SEPTA receives community support

Newington’s Special Education PTA is the recipient of this year’s Waterfall Festival charity proceeds.

Jane Ancona Siegel, president of Newington SEPTA, said “SEPTA’s Board of Directors was very excited to learn that SEPTA was chosen by the Waterfall Festival Committee and would like to thank the committee for selecting SEPTA.” Siegel went on to say that the donation will help SEPTA work toward its goal of having a positive impact on the lives of special needs children and their families within the community.

Newington SEPTA is a young and growing organization. Since its formation in March 2009, SEPTA has held programming

for parents, workshops, support groups, social events, and has awarded scholarships to graduating special education students at NHS. This spring SEPTA also hosted its first Special Needs Resource Fair. The resource fair was highly successful,and the feedback was so positive that SEPTA has planned to make it an annual event.

“We would also like to thank and acknowledge Kiwanis Club and Newington Memorial for their support.Both have been generous contributors to Newington SEPTA from the beginning,” said Siegel.

At a recent fundraiser in Newington,Steve Woods,candidate for mayor, joined by U.S Sen. John Larson, told his supporters that he has been spending his afternoons and weekends knocking on doors with his team, meeting the town residents and discussing his positions, according to a press release by Newington democrats.

Not surprisingly, the topic that comes up most often is the town budget. Mike Lenares recently suggested that we use some of the town’s rainy day fund to cover education expenses. In contrast to his opponent, Woods has stated over and over again that “trying to balance a budget by taking money from the town reserve is just not good accounting practice,” the release said.

Newington plays well but falls to Southington

NEWINGTON — Sometimes in sports you do everything right but still don’t get the expected result.

That was the story for Newington Monday afternoon, in a 2-0 loss to Southington. The Indians dominated play for most of the game, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Southington opened the scoring with a Steven Deponte shot from the top of the box that just snuck inside the post for a 1-0 Blue Knights lead.

John Ricciardone would score just a few minutes later, powering a brilliant low free kick into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

That would be the end of Southington’s dominance up front, and it would be the Blue Knights’ defense that would sparkle from there on, highlighted by Bill Queen.

Queen would be forced to make

four diving stops when all was said and done, not including a jaw-dropping sprawling save that saw the goalie dive feet-first across his crease to keep out yet another Newington attempt on goal.

Southington coach Dave Yanosy wasn’t surprised by the Indians’ pressure on Queen.

“Newington hasn’t gotten a ton of breaks this year, but they are a very good team,” Yanosy said. “And they realistically gave us all we can handle.”

But most of the reason Southington could handle the pressure was because of Queen.

“He has been phenomenal for us all year,” Yanosy said. “He was huge for us today.”

Brunetti also acknowledged Queen’s performance.

“He did a fantastic job today,” he said. “He stood on his head and did what he had to do for his team. We

just couldn’t finish.”

Newington had its chances despite being shutout, but simply couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net. Despite not being able to score, Brunetti was still pleased with his team’s effort.

“When we got the ball [into the attacking third] we were able to settle down and started playing a little,” he said. “We found space and we were able to get guys behind the defense and we made the goalie make saves.”

DeLeo is playmaker for boys soccer team

Newington midfielder John DeLeo did everything right in a 2-0 loss to Southington Monday afternoon, he just couldn’t find the back of the net.

DeLeo was a field general for the Indians, possessing the ball in midfield while creating space and offensive chances for his teammates.

Of Newington’s 13 shots, DeLeo was responsible for seven of them. And nearly every one of them went in.

DeLeo hit the post twice, both times in the second half. The first time, his curving shot from just outside the box curved about three inches too far and struck iron. The second time, everyone on the pitch thought he had scored a goal. His shot from inside the box hit the side of the post and he watched as the ball rolled parallel to the goal line, but never cross it.

“He’s our best player on the field,” Newington coach Jeff Brunetti said. “He’s the link to our forwards from the midfield and he’s a playmaker.”

SOUTHINGTON — The Blue Knights played what head coach Sal Penta called their best performance of the year Tuesday night, shutting down the rival Newington Indians 4-0 in girls soccer.

“Even though the score was 4-0 it doesn’t reflect how even the game was. It was a good performance by everyone on the field,” he said Though the first 10 minutes of the contest were clearly owned by Newington, Southington was lucky enough to have its first two shots find nylon, helping it to an early lead.

“We were pretty efficient and we took advantage of our chances today,” Penta said.

Highlighting a bright day offensively for the Knights was Erica Kosienski, who netted two goals, assisted by Sarah Palko and Ali Zachon.

Helping Kosienski to double her goal totals were Nicole Wershoven, who nailed a penalty kick, and Sam Bottaro, who scored on an unassisted goal.

Heather DeLude was solid for the Indians, stopping five shots. Sarah Caisee and Megan McLaughlin each tallied two saves for the Blue Knights.

The Blue Knights moved to to 7-3. with the win while the Indians fell to 4-5 with the defeat.

Indians break through for victory

Snyder, Ryan lead Newington past East Hartford

NEWINGTON—Onapictureperfect afternoon, the Newington Indians snapped a 13-game losing streak in dominate fashion, taking down the East Hartford Hornets 20-6.

Newington dominated both sides of the ball throughout the game Oct. 7. Its defense shutout the Hornets for three quarters, while Jonathan Snyder and Eric Ryan had their way on offense.

Snyder threw for over 200 yards and a touchdown, while Ryan rushed for over 130 with a touchdown of his own. “Like I told the guys, be happy but not satisfied,� Newington coach Roy Roberts said. “We’ve got a lot of games to go, but they did a

great job tonight. I’m happy for the program, for the school, happy for everyone who supports Newington football, because we’re looking to build something new here.�

Throughout the first quarter, neither team could get their offense going. The defenses for both teams were able to get big stops on third down, ending drives consistently.

Both teams struggled to find any kind of rhythm in the opening quarter.

While the defenses set the tone in the first quarter,Newington’s offense was able to set it in the second. Led by quarterback Snyder, the Indians marched their way downfield to open the quarter. Snyder completed four of his five passes on the drive, including a 13-yard touchdown pass to Zach Morris to give Newington its first lead of the game. “Snyder isn’t going to tell anybody when he’s hurt, but he was hurt tonight and he wasn’t really able to play his game,� Roberts said. “We’re happy we can get him out of here as healthy as we can get him. He got the win and he wasn’t going to miss this game, so I’m happy for him.�

After a 35-yard kickoff return, the Hornets were in great position to match Newington’s touchdown.

However, even though they were able to convert on a fourth down at midfield, East Hartford was unable to keep the drive going, and was forced to punt for the third time of the half.

After forcing a quick three-andout,East Hartford was given another opportunity on offense, but once again Newington’s defense made the stop and forced another punt. With the ball back, Snyder frantically led the Indians downfield as they raced to beat the clock, but a long field goal attempt came up short.

Still, Newington had the halftime lead at 7-0. “I felt pretty good about our defense tonight, but they have to play a full game,� Roberts said. “We had some lapses toward the end, but tonight they definitely did a great job.�

The Hornets came out of halftime strong,amounting their biggest drive of the game, but two key plays by Newington defensive back

Christian Zotti prevented them from scoring. “I can’t be more proud of guys like Zotti,� Roberts said. “He’s not the biggest guy on the field but his heart’s tremendous, and today he really stepped up.�

The two stops seemed to spark Newington, and on the first play of its drive, Ryan broke free for a 65-yard run to bring the ball to just shy of the goal line. The next play was run into the end zone by Ryan Esposito, and with the extra point, Newington brought its lead up to 14-0. “Eric Ryan is slowly coming along as one of the best running backs you’re going to see. He is slowly becoming a featured part of our offense as we’re constantly looking to get better,� Roberts said.

With the score at 14-0 entering the fourth quarter, the teams began exchanging interceptions. Zotti made an impressive catch, pickingoff Griffin Michalek’s pass, but then Snyder gave it right back to the Hornets when his pass was intercepted by Stephane Thompson.

East Hartford seemed to stabilize its offense after the interceptions,but a huge fumble resulted in another Hornets turnover.

Back on offense, the Indians wasted no time in picking up another touchdown. A 37-yard pass from Snyder got them deep in the red zone, setting up Ryan for a seven-yard run into the end zone.

The point after was missed, but Newington had the 20-0 lead.

Late in the fourth, a late hit penalty brought East Hartford into the red zone for the first time all game.

AfterasackbyNewington,Michalek heaved the ball 22 yards into the end zone where Josh Delvalle hauled it in, ending Newington’s bid at a shutout.

The point after was blocked, with the lead cut to 20-6.

While the shutout was over, Newington was in no danger of losing its 14th straight game. Time was not on East Hartford’s side, however, and as the seconds ran out, Newington was able to pick up not only its first win of the season, but its first win in over a year.
