Speaking on behalf of dog people in the community, the newly reopened and refurbished White Rock Dog Park rocks! If you were driving down East Mockingbird last Saturday, you must have noticed an onslaught of parked cars on the northwest shore of the lake. Dogs and puppies were jumping out excitedly taking their persons by the leash to their fancy new favorite digs — their “go for a ride in the car” destination … and quickly abandoning their leashes once inside the fence. June 6 was the longawaited re-opening of White Rock Dog Park, and both four-legged and two-legged visitors were beyond ecstatic to return to their favorite offleash park. It turned out to be the clear, sunny day you would

Echo has more than ‘Precious Little’ to say By Shari Goldstein Stern Echo Theatre’s current show, “Precious Little” is not your hot summer pick-meup. Know that going in. The Bath House Cultural Center’s offering requires some serious thought, reflection and imagination. Its lead character, Brodie is a linguist, played by the only actress of the three-person cast, who plays the same character throughout the show. She is Sherry Jo Ward, who delivers an emotional rollercoaster of a performance. While a seriousminded scientist, Brodie finds herself vulnerable as the artificially inseminated, pregnant partner of a lesbian couple. A routine amniocentesis reveals a high risk, genetic birth defect is present, leaving tough questions to answer and decisions to make … or not. As a linguist, one of Brodie’s clients is a woman from another country with a unique, vanishing language. Brodie’s project is to learn about the rare language from her, which becomes a challenge when the woman’s

Sherry Jo Ward, left, and Lisa Fairchild in Echo Theatre’s “Precious Little” through June 21. daughter wants to control her mother’s sessions, as she apparently does all her life. Lisa Fairchild plays cast “A,” which includes a couple of “costume changes.” All of the changes are made onstage, with the stage lights dimmed. As little as a scarf or sweater differentiates the characters. Fairchild is an experienced

actor with local credits at theaters including Theatre Three; Dallas Children’s Theatre; WaterTower; Contemporary Theatre of Dallas and several others. Besides area theater, her credits include voice-over, film, radio, theater, commercial and industrial. She directs and casts in addition to acting.

Fairchild’s broad range of characters in the show stretch from an elderly woman, who speaks a vanishing language to an ape and others in between. She does each justice. As “B,” Molly Welch’s roles include Brodie’s lesbian lover. The two do have a graphic love scene, albeit fully clothed. And then, she’s the uncooperative daughter of “A” and a counselor in a genetics clinic. In both roles, she’s extremely skilled at making you hate her in her first few lines. The sets are simple and multitask-worthy as they morph from an office to a lab to a sound booth and a zoo enclosure. The cast and crew change them out quickly without drawing attention. Sherry Jo Ward brings a unique dimension to the role. In February of 2015, the 42-year-old was diagnosed with “Stiff-Person syndrome (SPS),” a disorder so rare that an estimated one in a million in the country people are afflicted. From
