TCM Couples Retreat is Transformative!
Love,laughter,andhealingfilledthehallsoftheGenesisSpiritualLifeandConferenceCenterfrom March13to16asVeteranandMilitarycouplesgatheredforaretreatlikenoother.Hostedby ProjectNewHope,Inc.(PNH),theTCMCouplesRetreatofferedVeteransandtheirspousesa sacredspacetoreconnect,recover,andreimaginelifebeyondtrauma.
AttheheartoftheretreatwasTheCortinaMethod(TCM),apioneeringbrain-basedtrauma resolutionprogramledbyexpertMichaelCortinaandhisteam,MichelleStarnes,BrynnRangel, HeatherHenley,andSarahMarieCearns.Theirmissionwassimpleyetpowerful:helpcouplesheal withoutrelivingthepain.
“Icouldn’tunderstandhowIcouldaddressthepasteventwithoutrelivingit,butTCMwas amazing,”oneparticipantshared.“Ifeelbetterequippedtodismissunhelpfulthoughtsandgive myenergyandfocustomylovedonesandmyself.”
Anditwasn’tjustaboutthemind itwasaboutthewholeperson.Theretreatfeaturedequine therapy,holisticyoga,Reiki,reflexology,andworkshopsontopicslikethegut-brainconnection andexpressivearttherapyCouplesexplorednewwaysofcommunicating,managingpain,and leaningintovulnerabilitywithgrace.
“I’vealwaysbeenintimidatedbyhorses,”saidoneattendee,“butIreallyenjoyedtheequine therapy.ThestafffromPNH,TCM,andGenesiswereallveryapproachable,welcoming,and helpful.”

Oneofthemosttouchingmomentscameduringapaintingworkshopledbyresidentartist ShyAnneGlebocki,wherecouplespaintedspringtulipssidebyside,theircanvasesreflectingnot justflowers butgrowth,patience,andrenewedconnection.
“Thisretreatwasamazing,”anothercouplesaid.“Ilearnedsomuchandcanutilizetheseskillsat hometorelax.IcannotrememberwhenIhavebeensostress-free.”
ProjectNewHope’sholisticapproachwouldn’thavebeenpossiblewithoutthecareofdedicated providerslikeClarissa,Donna,DeniseandLisa,whoeachhelpedcreateasafeandnurturing environment.
Andthenthere’sDerby aservicedogwhosequietloyaltyremindedeveryonejusthowdeepthe bondrunsbetweenaVeteranandtheirfour-leggedpartner.ServicedogslikeDerbydon’tjust comfort—theyanchor.
Mealtimes,too,becamemomentsoftogetherness,thankstothekitchenteamatGenesis.AsPNH PresidentBillMoorewrote,“Thedelicious,nourishingfoodyouservenotonlyfuelsourbodiesbut alsowarmsourhearts.”
Theretreatended,butthestoriesoftransformationcontinue.AsoneVeteranexpressed,“Iwill continuetopromoteandencouragefellowVeteranstoreachoutandattendfutureTCM/PNH retreats.Thisistrulyagiftthatprovidesanunbelievablealternativetomainstreammethods.” Itwasmorethanaretreat itwasareturntoself,tolove,andtohope.
Fifteenyearsago,BillandDonnaMoorefoundedProjectNewHope,Inc.fromtheirhomewitha simplemission:tosupportVeteransandtheirfamilies. Today,theyareproudtosaythatPNHhascontinuedtoupholdthatcommitment,offeringcritical programsthatmakearealdifferenceinthelivesofthosewhohaveserved.

Thrive withProjectNewHope
Inlate1950,IdiscoveredIwasnexttothebottomonthedraftlistforJanuary1951.UnsurewhetherI couldsecureadeferment,Isoughtguidancefrommylocalrecruitingoffice.Theysuggestedthat, givenmyuniqueskills—typingandplayingtheorgan—theU.S.AirForcemightofferanopportunity toserveasaChaplain’sAssistant.
Idecidedtoenlistandwassittingintheroom,readytobeswornin,whenenlistmentswere suddenlyhalted.Agroupofus,allwithsomecollegeexperience,weretoldwe’dbeideal candidatesforArmyOfficerCandidateSchool.Aftercompletingeightweeksofbasictrainingand justoneweekofpre-OCS,Irealizedthatpathwasn’tforme.Fortunately,Ireceivedanassignment intheChaplain’sOffice,whereIserveduntilIwasofferedapostwithasmallmilitaryunitstationed attheatomiclabinNewMexico.There,weprovidedadministrativesupporttocivilianscientists duringnucleartestinginthePacific.Itookpartintwoofthosetests.Iservedmyoriginalthree-year enlistmentandextendedforanotheryear,completingfouryearsintheU.S.Armyfrom1951to1955. MynameisHoliceTurnbow,andwhilemymilitaryserviceisaproudchapterofmylife,mylifelong passionhasbeenquilting.AlthoughIofficiallybeganquiltingintheearly1970s,myloveforthe crafttookrootmuchearlier.GrowingupinTexas,Ispentcountlesschildhooddaysvisitingmy grandparentsandauntsontheirfarms.Iwasalwayssurroundedbythesightsandsoundsof quilting—helpingstretchquiltsintheirframesorplayingunderneaththemastheywerestitched above.
Overtheyears,quiltinghastakenmeonanincrediblejourney.I’veservedasaconsultantfor fabriccompaniesandquiltproductmanufacturers,andI’vebeenacertifiedjudgewiththe NationalQuiltingAssociationsinceitsprogrambegan.I’vejudgedeverythingfromlocalcounty fairstomajornationalquiltingconventions,andIbecameaCertifiedTeacherintheearly1990s. Teachinghasbeenoneofthegreatjoysofmylife—whetherinquiltshops,forguilds,oratlarge conventions.Mygoalhasalwaysbeentohelpbothnewandexperiencedquilterscreatetheirbest work.
Oneofmyparticularinterestsliesinquiltingdesignandmotifs, whetherdonebyhandormachine.Ibelievein“backtothebasicsand ontothefuture” embracingtime-honoredtechniqueswhilealso exploringinnovative,stress-freemethodsthatenhancebothcreativity andsatisfaction.
