5 Modes of Transportation

In order to have easy mobility of persons and goods, it is necessary to have a sophisticated and widespread transportation system. This system is made up of five primary areas of transportation, which are: – Motor vehicles – Railroad transportation – Air transportation – Water transportation – Pipelines

Each of these five modes consists of different subsystems which make up the system. Each mode is used to transport persons or goods, but in many instances, one mode may be favored over the others. The transportation of passengers is slow and inconvenient, therefore it is not used very often except for pleasure. The size of water craft may vary from small single seater jet skis to large cruise ships. The most common use of water transportation is for freight. The type of freight moved is usually limited to those classes that are bulky and of low cost per unit volume. Pipelines are mainly used to transport oil and oil products or natural gas. Oil pipelines are divided between gathering lines and trunk lines, while gas pipelines are divided between field lines and trunk lines. Each mode must have sufficient funds for building and maintaining the infrastructure. For the highway system, funds come from several different areas. The percentages who book all of their travel online grew from 23 percent to 29 percent. Airline tickets continue to be the top travel product purchased online. The share of online travelers booking hotels grew from 57 percent in 2002 to 71 percent in 2003–very close to the percentage who book air travel online (press release, www.tia.org)". These changes have led many companies in the transportation industry to develop and implement e–CRM (customer relationship management) programs to respond quickly and effectively to constantly changing customer demand.

The airline industry has felt the most significant impact from the growth in popularity of e–commerce and online ticket purchases. On May 19, 2003, Jupiter Research, a division of Jupitermedia Corporation (Nasdaq: JUPM), announced that "online airline ticket sales in 2003 will grow to $19 billion, a 14% increase over the $16.8 billion in sales in 2002". Jupiter Research also found that 34% of airline ticket sales to leisure and unmanaged business travelers took place online in 2003, compared to 28% of tickets that were sold online in 2002. Almost 2.5 million more people purchased airline tickets online in 2003 than in 2002.

Cars and light trucks present quick, dependable, and suitable mobility on command to an ever mounting amount of people in nations throughout the world.
