Racism is a term that is often used to describe a variety of social, culture and economic problems, but has, unfortunately, acquired "so many contradictory meanings that it takes on the aura of a myth," it has become increasingly difficult to define (de Benoist, 1999, p. 11). Although the term wasn't officially featured in the Larousse Dictionary until 1932, racism had been a dark cloud hanging over the global horizon for centuries (de Benoist, 1999). Before delving into the complex concept of racism, it is recommended that the student who is writing on this topic first consider the notion of race, which has been described as "a group of people with the same physical...show more content... 296). There is also the notion of 'genetic inheritance,' which subjectively implies that some groups are superior to others (Vorster, 1999). This argument is rooted in belief that some groups sport a more impressive biological pedigree than others and are therefore better than other groups from the moment of birth. Finally, there is the idea that suggests that group diversity is forged through social behavior (Vorster, 1999). In other words, some groups simply have greater physical or intellectual capacities than others, which allow them to be easily categorized on the basis of superiority and inferiority (Vorster, 1999). Interestingly, these ideas seem to transcend all cultural barriers, which is why racism is prevalent in both primitive as well as civilized societies.
There are three major factors which need to be considered in order to provide a sufficient overview of racism that lends itself to further, more detailed analysis. In the long run, they end up discriminating the white man, who also retaliates in a bid to protect themselves. Therefore, unless these two groups learn to forgive each other of the sins that were committed before they were born, racism is far from over in our society. The race is indeed a biological category. This is because it is based on the genes that make them posses a different skin color from other people who belong to other races. However, ethnicity is a totally different category that cannot be grouped together with racism. Ethnicity refers to the way a person has been brought up and the characters and cultures that they are brought up in. Though the topic is widely talked about, nobody really does anything to stop it. People will be quick to elaborate on the fact that it should be stopped, then make no changes themselves. Racism is one of the world's major issues in the past years and today as well. People are not aware of how immense racism has become and how much harm people have received. Racism can be everywhere, not only in the United States, many people suffer from depression because they have been a victim of racism in their life. When I came to United States, I went to high school and I was put in the ESOL program; this is a program for teenagers that English is not their first language. It was extremely hard for me, because I had to communicate with my classmates and with my teachers as well in a language that I was not used to. Me and my friends used to speak in our native language, many Americans used to tell us to go back to our country, they would also say that in the United States we only speak English not that stupid Spanish that we were speaking, and just because we were from another country, and we were speaking another language, they treated us bad and made fun about us every time we would say something. An underlying problem is promoting racism. It is the fact that a lot of people believe, and try to make they believe, that racism no longer exists. The Civil War itself took place in large part because of racism via slavery. Although the side favoring an end to slavery won the war, this heightened racism in many ways. No longer in control of the black population in the South, many white landowners' hate towards blacks grew. They could not handle that blacks might actually be considered human. This rage led to violent lynching and murders. Although slavery was ended by means of the Civil War, violent acts against blacks in the south continued. The racism following the Civil War continued well into the 20th century. By the 1950's, discrimination had become such a problem in society that politicians became greatly involved in trying to equalize the rights of minorities with those of the majority. This effort for equality by politicians furthered hate and suffering for minorities in America. Incidents such as the bombing in Mississippi and the burning of many black churches in the South spread throughout much of America. Finally, by 1964, minorities were granted equal rights in society. Racism is one of those unusual things which seem to escape the understanding of clear and to the point definition. Racism is a system of racial discrimination and prejudice. The concept of race as classifying people can be seen as misleading people and prejudicial as far as it's involved in the quality of human life. For example when a white law school student at Georgetown reported that black students were not as qualified as white students, it made a big controversy about racism. This issue of racism is popular by name but tends to be sugar coated by the way people see it. In order to truly understand racism you need to take a bite into the topic in order to get a taste of what it is really like. Racism comes in many different forms and can be seen many different ways. What is racism? That is a tough question. I think everyone almost makes their own interpretation of what is racist and what is not. There are so many influences in our world that makes it difficult to create your view on racism. I think racism is thinking that one group of people is more superior over another. The amount of hatred people have towards one another is heartbreaking. From a young age, I have been observing the world and developing my world view. Historical examples, modern examples, andGod's Word have all shaped my view onracism. As I have grown up I have learned about racism in history. There are many examples that we learn about in history class. One example that always comes to my mind when I think about race is during the Holocaust when the Jews were being killed by the Nazis because they were not considered humans. Another example is in the 1800's when America was divided because of slavery. I think as an American it is important to learn about slavery and the civil war to better understand what our country used to be like and what it has gone through. My mom has done a very good job in educating my sister and I about racism. I cannot count the times I have gone to Greenfield Village or the Henry Ford museum in my life and it has opened my eyes. At the museum and village, I got to see and experience hands on historical examples of what the African Americans had to go through. I got to see the different water fountains, schools, churches, and bathrooms for the different colors. And how they could only have certain jobs because they were considered dumb. I have sat in the exact seat Rosa Parks sat in when she refused to move to the back of the bus. I saw the housing and conditions that the slaves had to go through when working on the plantations and much more. It makes you step back and think about these events. It is hard to not relate because it happened years ago, but when you see it up close and personal it changes your thoughts. It is cool to see how our world has brought itself together after these tragic times, but many things are still going on today. Racism is the unjust hate for any people who are simply different for a various array of reasons. It is all around us and always will be, but that does not give us the right to be passive on the subject. This discrimination against culturally diverse people is hurting our " land of the free", one racist remark at a time.
So what is racism? According to the Webster's New World Dictionary, racism is: the practice of racial discrimination, segregation, etc. Racism anti semitism against a certain race, religion, or group of people. A huge example of this is the Jewish Holocaust. From 1939–1945 the Jewish population was scapegoated for all of Germany's problems after World War l, resulting in the death of 6 million Jews. Racism has been an issue that has caused controversial debates for years. It is a topic that stirs up lots of emotions within people and continues to be an argument for all. When there has been a shooting between a white and a colored or a cop and a colored person, people blame it on racism. They state that since the white cop shot the black man it simply means the cop was racist. Then the people want to speak that justice needs to be served and the cop needs to be put in prison or released from his duty as a cop. I believe that whenever there is an issue between people of color and non color the first thing that is brought up is racism. On the news there are riots and protesting that are happening in the streets because they believe that justice needs to be served for these racist acts that have occurred. However, I get frustrated when people want to blame the issue on racism. However, most of these incidents that have occurred where not stratd with the intentions of any racist acts. That is where I believe that racism is being over discussed in the media, because so many people want to see these issues and point the finger right at racism without even knowing the full story. A reason why people may fear discussing the issues ofrace is because when people approach this issue they do it from a political standpoint rather than a neutral standpoint.

The concept of race and racism has transformed over time and is seen through the eyes of everyone in our world. It unfortunately seems to be the norm for the public to not only assume an individual 's race and to separate them to be distant from one another, but to also pigeon hole every race in a restricted category. This has been going on for so long that we would expect everyone to view society this way, however that might not be the case for all citizens within the United States. Now the question is, where do we learn these ideas from? How do people have this thoughts ingrained in their brain? There are many definitions of race, but how they come about? When speaking with my mother, Clara Salas, a short, humble woman with red/brown hair and a smile that could light up a room, she had quite a bit to say on the matter. Throughout our interview I flooded her with questions on racial construction and how she has came to know what race meant and what it was. It is usually assumed that racism has been a part of civilisation since civilisation started, that it is embedded into how people work and that no matter what, it will always exist. Another assumption is that racism derives from the capitalism of the slave trade by white elitist men seeking to dehumanize people for economic gain, and used racism as a way to mask their financial motives to justify enslavement as righteous. It can also be easily assumed that even before this, some sort of segregation, or "proto–racism" existed throughout native colonies as a way to define the differences between rival tribes. This could have originated with differences in beliefs and then evolved into facial differences. From this we can evaluate that racism has been possibly present since cavemen times to differentiate rivals, to the ancient Greeks and Romans, where a 'type' of racism was used to segregate and even enslave to the modern understanding of the word racism, and its meanings rooted into black slavery. However, we still must ask ourselves, is racism learnt?
Firstly, let's focus on the learnt aspect of racism. One argument for racism being taught is the fact that throughout human evolution, continental travel would have been extremely difficult and unlikely to happen due to the sheer unfamiliarity with the world. For example, dangers, such as predators, or how to prepare or even prolong existence throughout long travels in transportation such as boats would prove difficult. Furthermore, the technology was insufficient and undeveloped to were ferrying people was an unrealistic concept. This indicates that there was essentially no contact between different races or explicitly different looking people which suggests that humans evolved without the recognition of 'races' and therefore without the ideology of a 'superior' race existing.

Systematic racism continues to perpetuate the marginalization of people of color in the 21st century despite belief of living in a post racial society. This unfortunate reality is seen in many different forms of current culture. One of the ways systematic racism takes current form, is in the negative portrayal created by a single narrative, or the lack thereof, minority groups. This lack of representation or diversity of people of color in different forms of art and platforms, not only affects those subject to misrepresentation, but perpetuates negative attitudes and discriminatory behavior towards those subject to misrepresentation. It is necessary to look into the ways this single narrative in different art forms affects marginalized group, and the current move to dismantle the component power plays in who gets to tell these stories. There are many reasons why art exist, and why people continue to make it. Art can bring joy and hope to a group of people, but it can also dehumanize the same group.
