On arriving at the prison gate with the other inmates, "Red" Redding bet his buddies that Andy would be the first of the new inmates to break that night. Andy would prove him wrong many times over the years. Although pleading innocent, he quickly adapts to prison life keeping himself quiet and reserved from the other inmates but prisoners and guards alike are soon to realise that Andy Dufresne is unlike any man to enter Shawshank before. This resulted to him becoming even more popular with the other inmates. He had managed to put a whole new meaning to Shawshank Prison. When Andy disappeared from his cell one morning in 1966, no one had a clue as to what could have happened to him. Ripping back the poster of Raquel Welch, the Warden discovered the enormous hole Andy had managed to dig out with the tiny rock hammer; though it took nineteen years Andy had not given up hoping in escaping from the hell of prison life. His escape lead to chaos in Shawshank as nothing like this had ever happened before. Whilst Andy took off for a brand new life with a new identity back at the prison, guards were being arrested and the warden had no other choice but to end his life before the police arrived. With hundreds of thousands of dollars in his pocket, and starting a new life in Zihuatenejo, Mexico, Andy urged Red to join him by leaving a letter buried under a tree. Red would only receive this letter if he was out of prison and luckily after 40 years of attempting to be granted patrol he was finally accepted. Upon his unexpected release, Andy and Red were finally able to meet again but it was different than before, this time they were both free men. The first sequence we get of Shawshank prison is a LS

Essay about The Shawshank
Redemption

The movie of the Shawshank Redemption is based on a short story by Steven King. The movie shows how prison life affects prisoners during their sentence in jail and after when they are released. The director concentrates mostly on the personal cost of adapting to prison life and how some convicts, once they conform, lose the ability to survive beyond the barbed wire and iron bars. As a character puts it, 'These [prison] walls are funny. First you hate them, then you get used to them, then you start to depend on them.' The director shows us to what extent prisoners can be made to 'depend on them'. The two episodes that I will analyse are examples of two different 'paths' prisoners can take once...show more content...

The first episode is the release of Brooks and his life on the outside. When he leaves the prison he is dressed very smartly in a dark suit. We next see him on the bus. The camera is set in front of him and we see him sitting with his feet and hands on the rail before him. The director has given him a crow like image. From this we interpret that something bad will happen. When he steps out the camera follows him down the road. While the episode is going on, Brooks is narrating his feelings. When he wants to cross the road he is abruptly taken back as he sees an automobile pass by. He says that there are many more automobiles now than there were before and doesn't like the way the world has turned out to be. After, we see him feeding the birds. He says that he hopes that Jake might "come by and say 'hello'". I believe that this is the scene in which we see Brooks in a most open space, it gives us hope that he will do alright. Brooks is placed in a half–way house and is given a job at a supermarket. When he sleeps we see he is very agitated. The camera films him from above (crane) and in a voice–over he tells us he is often scared at night. We can compare this to some of the men's, including Andy's, first nights at Shawshank Prison. Working as a grocery–bagger at the supermarket everything goes wrong, he is Get more content

The Shawshank redemption is about much more than just a young banker spending many years of his life in prison. It shows us the struggles inmates go through to adapt to an environment as harsh as prisons and how creating friendships with others helps the men get through the rough patches. The film demonstrates that prison is a world of its own, with its own rules and how many men struggle to fit back into society when they are released.

Shawshank Redemption uses many good techniques to capture moments brilliantly. A few examples of these are: when Andy first arrives at Shawshank an establishing shot is used to show the prison. This allows the viewer to witness how bare and dull the prison is and how the prisoners are not allowed to express themselves in any way. Another example is the director uses parallels. Both Red and Brooks have the same experiences when they leave Shawshank, showing the plight the characters face in the real world due to institutionalisation. This makes us fear that Red's path will end the same as Brooks'. However, the director shows us that we have a choice and that Red and Andy's friendship has come such a long way that he carries on going because he gave Andy his word he would go to the oak tree. The last example is the type of lighting...show more content...

The aim of Shawshank is to isolate and reform criminals and teach them right from wrong. Instead, the prison is full of corruption, greed, bribery, and money laundering. Everyone uses the system to their own advantage, from Red, who smuggles goods into the prison, all the way to the warden, who profits from forced prison labour. The warden makes Andy launder money for him and this stops him from helping prove Andy innocent so that Andy can never reveal his secret. The fact that Shawshank is as corrupt and tainted as the outside world further justifies Andy's escape from a hypocritical system that does not care for the prisoners' lives or

The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption directed by Frank Darabont is a 1994 American drama film set in the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. The film is an enthralling film about the survival of one of its prisoners, Andy Dufresne, the protagonist convicted to life imprisonment in Shawshank prison during 1947. Facing incarceration, Andy's character as a city banker forms a relationship with a prison inmate 'Red' to fight despair. Darabont uses film techniques such as camera work, soundtrack and lighting and colour to present the main theme of hope. The theme of hope intentionally revealed is that the hope of identity are the key to redemption as the prisoners confront 'institutionalism'. Hope can be conceived as an innovation to 'get busy living'. Frank Darabont conveys the theme of hope as the key to survival in the prison. The protagonist, Andy Dufresne is a resourcefully calm intelligent character. Andy Dufresne is a character sent to prison due to the murder of his wife and her lover. During the opening scenes the directors convince the audience that the character of Andy Dufresne is as a pleasant man. This shows that the audience expectations are defeated because the audience would not suspect a man like Andy Dufresne to end up in jail. Andy's clam characteristics are provoked during the scene he is abused by "the sisters" but as Andy is approached to be calm character he approaches the situation with intellect over violence. He is shown to differ from other character Get

As the years pass by, Andy develops a respect from his inmates and some of the guards by using his banking skills and his education. By assisting the warden, Samuel Norton, with his financial endeavors and trying to get a new library for Shawshank, Andy is able to slowly gain favor with the prison's authority. However, by helping the warden embezzle money, Andy does not realize that this is reducing his chances of ever leaving Shawshank because the warden does not want to get caught with his crimes. Andy is taken advantage of and placed in solitary confinement, which further pushes him to find freedom that he secretly has been planning all along. One morning, Andy's cell is empty and the warden finds an escape route that Andy dug for twenty years with a rock hammer hidden in his bible. In the end, Andy exposes the warden and moves to Mexico where Red will meet him when his time in prison is complete. Hope is what Andy was fueled by and is what gave both Red and Andy willpower to survive and seek for freedom.

In the movie Shawshank Redemption, social issues are evident and are portrayed through different characters that are dealing with their individual desire for hope and freedom, each having a different outlook on life. As the main character, Andy Dufresne has a goal of finding his own identity within the prison of Shawshank by taking on different responsibilities and roles. The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption is based on a book written by Stephen King. The story is centered around two imprisoned men; (Andy Dufresne and Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding), both convicted for murdering their wives. While serving their respective life sentences in jail, Andy and Red get to know each other. They develop a very special friendship that I personally view as a lifesaver for both of them. Red is known throughout the prison as the one with connections as he smuggles items from the outer world. This is how their friendship commences; Andy asks Red for a rock hammer. Red sees this as a call for freedom, as if Andy would try to use the tool to escape; a prediction that in due time does come true. Former banker, Andy brings his knowledge to great

Some of the films directed by Darabont are from King's work besides from The Shawshank Redemption like: The Mist, The Women in the Room and The Green Mile. Many filmmakers have been inspired by King's stories because of how he has such imagery and how his books are far more than pop–cultural phenomenons. In The Shawshank Redemption, Brooks killed himself. Brooks had been in prison for a while and he learned to live life and conformed to the prison way of life. Red says, "I couldn't hack it on the outside. Been in here too long. I'm an institutional man now. Like old Brooks Hatlen was." Red also explains how he's and institutional man similar to Brooks and how he'll also be unable to conform to the outside world. I think Brooks took his life because he felt alone, it was like he was moved to a new place where he was already labeled as a bad guy by society. He feared to conform to this new society and have hope since his surroundings changing. He had much more value and importance in the prisons and the fear of leaving there held him back from moving on, he was a prisoner. In The Green Mile, the prisoners were on a death row, so they held on to the fear of hope. They already knew they were dying because of the crimes they did and they didn't have a chance of redeeming themselves. This made them fearful of hoping since they only longed for their death. In Forrest Gump Jenny had a difficult childhood. She had the fear of staying in one place for too long and she always managed to run away from her problems. This made her a prisoner since it prevented her from having a good and successful

The Shawshank Redemption is a prison movie that is based on a book by Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont. The movie is not the average bloody horror movie; instead, it takes you to a place where your worst nightmares come alive. The tremendous performance by Morgan Freeman and other actors has truly brought this film to life. The emotions characters portrayed were so real that every one could feel compassion toward them. The Shawshank Redemption, a contribution to the working man, illustrates the dark side of the prison and the power of hope within that helps a prisoner to survive.

The setting is "dark and foreboding" and creates the atmosphere of the last place one would ever want to spend their life. The convicts have to tolerate other prisoners and guards who are brutal and ruthless ("Morgan Freeman Stars" 58). The Shawshank prison is a hell full of sinners (Alleva 16).

To the prisoners, prison is like a whole different world. After learning to deal with imprisonment, the prisoners then have a hard time dealing with the outside world. Another horror about prison life is the psychological disorder of being behind bars for so long prevents prisoners from being able to survive in the real world ("Morgan Freeman Stars" 58). One of the characters, played by James Whitmore, commits suicide because it is difficult for him to adjust to the outside world. Red, another prisoner, does the same thing when he is on parole (Alleva 16). Red states that "in [prison] he's an important man" where "outside he is nothing" but a "con [who] probably couldn't get a library card if he tried" (qtd in Armstrong 81). Before Red and James hang themselves, they do something with the knife in their hands. To keep the suspense alive, Darabont does not reveal their actions until after the suicides take place. The shot of the scene endorses one of Andy's ideologies: "get busy living or get busy dying" (qtd in Avella 18). The use of camera, angle shots, and knowing when to use them appropriately are the aspects that keep the viewers on their tiptoes. That is Get more content

During the final sequence of The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont, the director, used dialogue, symbolism and different camera techniques to create meaning for the viewer. These techniques helped to portray the idea of hope, freedom and determination, through the scenes. They built tension, keeping the viewers interest, and showed admiration in the relationship between Red and Andy. The first of these techniques, dialogue, was largely used by Darabont, in the form of a voice over. It was used throughout the entire film, but the director's use of non–diagetic dialogue when Andy was escaping brought emotion and left the viewer to think. One of these, Norton, the warden at Shawshank, found his own freedom by killing himself in the final sequence of the film. Darabont combined a series of low angle shots throughout the film to develop the strong, intimidating presence Norton had over the prisoners. Even when he was being corrupt, we saw the warden from a low angle. For example, we see him like this when he is outside, talking to Tommy before he is shot. The camera use keeps Norton looking superior, even when he had planned the murder of one of the inmates. Nothing of what he is doing is superior, but the director continued to give this impression. It built Norton's character, making the viewer believe that what he was doing was okay. Although we saw the corrupt things that Norton did, it didn't seem bad. This was because of the low camera shots that Darabont decided to use. Nothing Norton did seemed terrible, when if anyone else did it, it would be disgusting. The low angle shots made the viewer believe that Norton was so superior, that everything he did was right. Even after Andy had escaped and the police were knocking on the office door, Norton was seen through the same low angle shot. This didn't change until he had pulled the trigger on the gun, and killed himself. Frank Darabont used a high angle shot for the first time on Norton, after he was dead. This finally showed the viewer his true personality, when Norton didn't have the Get more content

This is where the opportunistic side of Andy begins to be evident. After overhearing the guards talking, he almost risks his life to tell the guard that he will help him keep the $30,000 that he inherited. This shows that Andy had guts and that he wanted to survive. In return for his favor of helping the guard, he gets his fellow workers ice cold beers on the last day. It is ironic because he has quit drinking himself. Andy then begins to work in the library because the warden hears of his talents in finance. This is where Andy first meets Brooks. He use this opportunity to ask the state for more money to build a larger library. And finally, the way Andy escapes is almost genius. Knowing that he is on the good side of the warden, he devises a very interesting and successful plan of escape. Overall, Andy blends in with the prison community through the good times and the bad (the sisters, a group of homosexual rapists). His personality is one of a person who makes the most of what he has. But he never loses hope that

Shawshank Redemption Research Paper

Ever SINCE the popularity of movies exploded, film geeks continue to debate the single movie to rule them all. WITHOUT A DOUBT, The Godfather is considered a masterpiece by many. FURTHERMORE, the subsequent Godfather sequels are excellent in their own right. The Shawshank Redemption is unquestionably a classic film, AS WELL. ALSO, one or even several movies in a series have their share of bragging rights. CASE IN POINT: the original Star Warstrilogy, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Indiana Jones films, to name a few. (Speaking of which, did you catch the Lord of the Rings reference PREVIOUSLY?) NATURALLY, one could never forget the movie Psycho, with its chilling storyline and plot twist. ADDITIONALLY, The Wizard of Oz still holds up extremely well, despite its age....show more content...

ALTHOUGH it is easy to award older and more classic movies with a badge of honor, there are numerous recent films that deserve praise.

CURRENTLY,animation studio Pixar is the champion of this category. In the face of outstanding animated works such as Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Wall–E, Inside Out, Up, and countless short films, most other animated movies pale BY COMPARISION. YET one film is strangely absent – Forrest Gump. One cannot open up a discussion about great movies and not mention Forrest Gump, and though it may not be the best movie ever, it is STILL a superb work of art. (That classic line will FOREVER be remembered: "Run, Forrest, Run!") OF COURSE, foreign films are also a huge contender in this debate. Spirited Away, FOR EXAMPLE, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2002. ON THE WHOLE, people can feverishly support their "best" film until the end of time, but what it all comes down to is a matter of opinion. AS A RESULT, it must be understood that it is okay to like something whether the general opinion on it is good or bad– what matters is that it brings you joy in some

This choice of soundtrack was intended irony as it is a piece by Mozart which talks about how a slave outwitted his master which is parallel to Andy and the Warden . The music is a verbal technique to address the director's main focus on hope in humanity. As well as verbal techniques , visuals such as lighting in the rooftop scene help to shows the Director's main purpose. In the rooftop scene the prison are offset by the green and bright tones of the world beyond Shawshank. This is intentional juxtaposition created by Frank Darabont to show how great life is beyond the grey and dark prison walls. In this scene the audience observe the walls of shawshank dissolve as the prisoners set and drink cold beers and felt like " free men".This is an uplifting scene as the mono scale tones of the film turn to be more warm as the sun sets. The sun in the background symbolizes a new day and start to freedom within Shawshank. Through the distinction of color in the rooftop scene to other scenes , Darabont allows the audience to feel hope in humanity being restored to the prisoners . This is a scene which is devoted to giving the prisoner a taste of freedom and hope and the audience is provoked to feel victory with the characters. Hope is relevant to one as it is an abstract noun that every individual has within them. Most people desire love , success or change

Shawshank Redemption Reflection

The movie "Shawshank Redemption" shows what goes on in a prison. The movie depicts the part of a prison that most people are not aware of. People think of a prison as a place a person is tortured physically as well mentally. However, all that being said true, friendship, hope, and loyalty exists in prison. The movie shows how the main characters Red and Andy build a friendship that lasts in life after prison and loyalty among the inmates. Besides the development of friendship, the movie clearly shows the everyday routine of a prisoner's life. He is loyal as he made sure he kept the promise he made to his friend Red. Andy has high external as he is educated and had a high position in a bank. On the other hand, Red has been in prison for his entire adult life which resulted in a change of personal system. He doesn't think of life after prison. He has been "institutionalized ". He has become dependent on the required system that he doesn't think he can survive after prison. The word institutionalized as described by Red is the process by which prisoners first hate the prison then gets used to it that finally, even their lives depend on it. (Movie). Red is also the guy that can get you anything. He sells "cigarettes, a bag of resources and a bottle of brandy" which resulted in high power and respect from his inmates. He values the life he has in prison than anything else. I believe this is because it has been a long time since he was out to see the world. He has already adjusted his behavior and way of life in regards to the required system of the prison. The rest of the prisoner's personal system lies between these two. The other concept related to the personal system and demonstrated in the movie is self–concept. Each of the inmates has their own self–concept. The Shawshank Redemption: Movie Questions 1. A degradation ceremony is a ceremony in which people are stripped of their personal identities and thrown into a brand new situation; something that they have not experienced before. An example of this from the movie was when the men first arrived at Shawshank Prison at the beginning of the movie. As they were walking in, they were surrounded by the "experienced" convicts and teased. They were then stripped naked, covered in powder to make sure they did not have lice, and then forced to walk throughout the prison with everyone staring at them.
