Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine, on September 21, 1947, the son of Donald and Nellie Ruth king. His father, a merchant seaman, deserted the family in about 1950. His mother took a succession of low–paying jobs to support him and his brother, David. A lonely, rather introverted child, King invented a more outgoing alter ego – Cannonball Cannon, a daredevil who "did good deeds" – and derived other vicarious thrills from listening to tales of horror on the radio, reading such spine–tingling comic books as Weird Science, Tales from the Crypt, and Tales from the Vault. He also went to see science fiction and monster movies. In October 1957, the local theater manager interrupted a Saturday...show more content...

Stephen King was determined to make his own mark as a writer. While still a student at the local high school, he tried his hand at composing offbeat short stories. He never sold a single one, but he did win first prize in an essay competition sponsored by a scholastic magazine. He took time off from his studies to play on the varsity football team, and was, for several years, the rhythm guitarist in an amateur rock 'n' roll band called the MoonSpinners. After he graduated from high school, King attended the University of Maine at Orono on a scholarship. Majoring in English, he took creative writing courses and contributed a weekly column called "The Garbage Truck" to the campus newspaper. By the time he had obtained his B.S. degree in 1970, he had sold two stories – "The Glass Floor" and "The Reaper's Image" – to Startling Mystery Stories for $35 each. Over the next few years, he published short stories in Cavalier, Gent, Penthouse, and Cosmopolitan, but he earned so little money as an author, that he was forced to add to his income by working at such jobs as janitor, library aide, gas station attendant, and presser in an industrial laundry.

Stephen King: On Writing

Stephen King is a man of many talents and personalities; not only is he able to scare his readers immensely, he is also able to make them laugh. I chose a passage from Stephen King's On Writing for this assignment; the passage stuck in my mind for a long time after I finished the book. His writing style is unique compared to the other autobiographies I have read over the years. Everything that a person writes has a meaning or purpose whether it's a letter or an essay and voice, tone, and style play a very important part in how the reader views the piece of writing. King manipulates the rules of writing in order to emphasize the meaning of the passage, which is to describe an early childhood experience, so the ...show more content...

His use of repetition in this sentence puts stress on what is causing her to be happy; the reader knows automatically that she finds pleasure in punishment. This paragraph is also the only one that has extremely long sentences separated by semi–colons and many comas.

King also chose certain terms to describe Eula–Beulah, which can be described as rhetorical features. "В….she was as big as a

Stephen King finds writing to be natural as long as you don't dig for it. Usually it can take Stephen King about three months to write a book just about a season. What stephen king means about "dig" the writers must grab tools from their own toolbox to bring light to a story. It must be realistic or relic to something from a pre–existing world. This idea helped stephen to succeed with his career. Stephen can't stress this enough in order to achieve greatness, you have to stop all distractions. For instance television, phones or any electronics should be out of sight. Accordingly stephen found it best to find an area with doors, close doors to help inspire writing. He also wrote a column, "King's Garbage Truck" for the campus newspaper, The Maine Campus, and submitted short stories to various publications. In 1967, King made his first professional sale when Startling Mystery Stories purchased his short story "The Glass Floor" for thirty–five dollars (Hoppenstand 8–9). In the introduction of the reprinted version of "The Glass Floor" in Weird Tales, King gives his audience his own self–criticism when he claims: "The first few pages are clumsy and badly written–clearly the product of an unformed story–teller's mind–but the last bit pays off better than I remembered" (King "The Glass Floor" 36). "The Glass Floor" cleverly explores the character of Charles Wharton, who wishes to see the place where his sister Janine died. Janie's late husband Anthony Reynard, refuses to allow Charles to see the sealed room. Eventually Charles enters the room and finds out that it only has a glass floor and ceiling. He soon loses his balance and dies. Charles' body is removed from the room and the doorway is plastered back up (King "The Glass Floor"). Later on, King graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970 with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach at the high school level. He

In Stephen King's excerpt "On Writing" we get an in depth analysis from his point of view, on what a writer's toolbox is composed of. Every person's toolbox differs depending on what they see to help them excel in their own writing, through their own experiences and preferences. "Good writing is about making good choices when it comes to picking the tools you plan to work with." (Page 128). King's top priorities that are vital to produce a good story include vocabulary, grammar, and elements of style. My own toolbox would consist of 4 tiers. Like Stephen, I would definitely keep my vocabulary on the top tier – I feel that while words are the roots of a story; finding the right word to express yourself is just as important. I often find myself...show more content...

The overall style and use of language in the piece you are writing is what will draw readers in, and encourage yourself to continue writing. Paragraphs seem to be more of the story's voice than the dialogue it uses. They portray how long or how short an idea can be. Like Stephen King said, "Paragraphs include stage direction, minor but beautiful enhancement of character and setting, and a vital moment of transition." (Page 134). A paragraph could be as short as a single sentence, or as long as ten pages, but a good writer knows where to stamp the period. A wandering idea can lead to a paragraph being a sad mess. "There comes a point where a toolbox becomes too large to be portable and thus loses it's chief value." (Page 114). Stuffing everything you can think of helping you to write would be as messy as this toolbox if it had no tiers. So the fourth tier is where I would draw the line and start writing. Fiction, fantasy, mystery, science and romance can all be written through the use of all the elements in the tiers above this one. There is nothing to fear when you write other than not pleasing yourself, or being able to draw yourself in. If you're bored with your own writing, I doubt anyone else will be truly Get more content

Through his book On Writing King proves himself to be an interesting character with many insightful views on life as well as writing. He prides himself in being unapologetic of the work that he has done in the past and encourages writers to do the same. King reveals his life story and the unique ways in which he became the writer that he is today. The details of his early life help the readers understand King's artistic choices, and what it takes to become a better writer. Although King lets the readers in on his explicit thoughts, there is still plenty to be asked about his views and the way in which he writes. King writes in his novel that "writing is not life, but I think that sometimes it can be a way back to life." I was surprised that someone who had called himself a serious writer and devoted so much of his time to writing had declared that writing was not life. I had expected him to express his feelings that writing was the center of his life as most artists declare that they "eat, sleep, and breathe" their art. I would ask King what he thinks of technology now that writers including himself are able to publicize their work to a more diverse audience and use technology as a means to improve their own writing. With building stronger skills comes a stronger imagination and put those skills to the test. Imagination allows us to create things unimaginable. Description is a key component in writing an essay. Stephen King On Writing Sparknotes

Stephen King's "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" is a marvelous and unusual text. Within the first part of his book, also called C.V., he explains his life experience up to the day he finishes the book. King expresses his life with multiple literary elements that assist the readers on imagining his life of adventures, catastrophes, fears, and loves. Following are three of my favorite passages that caught my attention. King gets drunk for the first time on his senior class trip to Washington. He expresses that "At some point after that I am in my bed. The bed holds still but the room starts to spin around it, faster and faster. It occurs to me that it's spinning like a turntable of my Webcor phonograph, on which I use to play Fats Domino and now play Dylan Clark Five. The room is the turntable, I am the spindle, and pretty soon the spindle is going to start tossing its platters," (King 89), shows how King was so drunk, that he imagined the room was spinning. In this passage, King gives off the impression of how it feels to be drunk by applying imagery about how the room is "spinning like a turntable", making him dizzy. He talks about using appropriate vocabulary, which is usually always the first word that comes to mind, stresses why a writer should never use adverbs, of which he loathes, and provides examples of what he believes to be good and bad writing and why. When he describes what he believes to be good writing, he does not reference modern day writing masterpieces or award winning pieces, he simply is describing work that is proficient, readable, and maybe even publishable. He describes two key components to 'good writing', these are to have a good understanding of the fundamentals, and to use the correct apparatus (142). These criteria cannot make a bad writer good or a good writer great, but it can make good writers out of merely competent writers (145). King urges writers to write what they know, not only in their minds but in their hearts and imaginations
