Being a 16 year old girl living in a small town I always thought about leaving for the big city life. I thought small town life was boring. I hadn't traveled much, never seen the ocean, never seen any great American land marks, and my family had never taken a vacation. We did only live 20 minutes from one of the towns most popular swimming holes, which is still my favorite place to be in the summer. My best friend Becky had lived with my family and I for about 3 years that summer, we pretty much did everything together, and as luck would have it the "summer of 16" as I like to call it kept us together even in travels. We both had learned that our grandmothers lived pretty close to one another inNew Mexico. My grandmother is pretty wealthy and told Becky and I that she would pay for our bus tickets out to New Mexico. Becky and I were beyond excited! Our trip started with a 22 hour bus ride from Springfield to Bernalillo, NM. Becky's grandmother picked us up and we spent the first week of our trip with her and her husband. The food was phenomanal, Becky's step–grandpa was an amazing cook. They lived a simple little life. He worked for the water department in Bernalillo and her grandmother was a stay at home granny who loved to read supernatural novels, she may have gotten Becky and I hooked on them too. Exploring Small Town Life

I live in the small town of Barney, North Dakota, however I go to school in the town of Wyndmere, North Dakota. I absolutely love small town life and I do believe that it has had a huge impact on who I have become throughout all 17 years of my life. Going to a school with only 20 kids in my class has immediate positives. First of all, it is easy to concentrate on academics when you can have one on one time with a teacher almost whenever there is freetime. In the play "Our Town", by Thornton Wilder, a character by the name of Simon Stimson makes a very insightful statement about people and their lives. Simon is dead and buried, as well as several of the play's other characters, when a newly–dead young woman named Emily joins their ranks and begins to realize the triviality and ignorance of her existence, as well as that of every living person. People live their lives working towards something they think will always be attainable, setting their eyes on the future, living for the future, rushing for the future, and ignoring the present. With "Our Town",Thornton Wilderis attempting to show us these faults and trying to persuade us to live in and for the present and to cherish every day that we live and breathe.

With the people of Grover's Corners representing this daily ignorance and triviality, the lives of the people who surround me are no exception. Take, for instance, my father, who on most days awakes early to leave for his job, works all day and comes home only to drive my siblings and I around, run errands, go to his side jobs, or fix the house, help us with our homework, stay on top of both our social lives, our moral growth, and our educational careers. Some nights my father will sit down and watch some television for maybe an hour or two, while most he simply doing everything but something for himself. Most small towns have one or two high schools. On the other hand, a big city has more schools than that. In a big city, you have the option for your career making field. INTRODUCTION

After reading Booth's work on The Life and Labour of the People of London led me to construct my own investigation on poverty but in a provincial town so I can then find an applicable general conclusion for a smaller populated area. My objective is to investigate upon the living conditions that the working classes of small towns inhabit as well as the growing problem of poverty. So I began short house to house surveys to the whole of the working class in of the city, and with this I decided to obtain my information regarding the housing, occupation, and earnings of every wage–earning family in York. Also together with the number and age of the children in each family.

As my investigation progressed I found that likewise to Booth's research into poverty the lowest wages to the working class is 21 shillings which I have concluded to be 14.5% of the population. Along with this, the image acts as evidence to that the statistic since an average middle orupper class person can afford to spend 60% on food and the rest on clothing or leisure items, whereas a family of 4 live off 21 shillings a day. A primary objective of mine is that I should not only take into consideration the population that is living in poverty but also the nature of the poverty.

On the streets of York there are 11,560 families which inhabit 388 of the streets this compromises the population of 46,754. Amongst these families are families of whose total earning are insufficient to obtain the minimum necessaries for the maintenance of merely physical efficiency. After seeing this type of poverty which comes under financial struggle I believe this should be described as 'primary poverty'. Being raised in a small town, I constantly viewed my hometown being small as a bad thing. Living in a small town, you are forced to find ways to stand out from the crowd, which easily teaches self–reliance and self–confidence. I have also learned to be trusting in other people, I have found that people mean well for the most part. Learning to trust people in a small town comes easily, the crime rate in my town is so low that the only things police have to worry about are misbehaving children. My parents never had to worry that I might be abducted or that I might get involved in illegal activities or get mixed up with the wrong crowd. I have developed a compassionate and constructive point of view in my life and learned to experience things that I would not have experienced otherwise.I have learned to appreciate the many traditions in my town, there are so many traditions that people in other places are too lazy to do. Critical Analysis Of Our Town

The classic production of Our Town written by Thornton Wilder was performed by the students of South Milwaukee High School at their own Performing Arts Center. Overall the performance was good, but there were times where the performance went in and out of spouts of boredom. I personally felt the story was really intrequing and thought provoking which made it all more dissapointing when I felt I was being left behind by the acting effort and technical aspect. The production was bursting with a lot of tapped talent, but lacked untapped potential. In general it was a nice time seeing it and enjoying the story with the cast. Our Town is a quite meta play that makes one question everything they thought they knew about theatre from the importance of a set to the self– awarness of characters. While being narrated and lead by the "Stage Manager" it follows George Gibbs, Emily Webb, and their respective families as they expereince a typical life through the three acts: Daily Life, Love and Marriage, and Death and Eternity.The play takes place from 1901– 1913 and questions the essence of life, theatre, and life through theatre ultimtely ending with Emily Webb herslef finding out these answers through the regret she experiences after death.

By far the best performers in the production were the young actors portraying George Gibbs, Emily Webb, and Emily's father Mr. Webb. These actors were exceptionally expressive and immersed into their characters. Emily was incredibly fluent in

A small town is known by their peacefulness and by their nature sounds of animals in the morning or during the night. Different from a small town, a big city is noisier because they have a lot of variety of machine sounds such as sirens, honks, vehicles, and people.
