NEWS FROM AND FOR THE CONGREGATION --Welcome to our newest member, Carol Johnson! Carol, who has attended our church for some time, reaffirmed her faith and committed herself to Christ and our ministries. We're so glad to have you "officially" among our flock! Carol's address and phone number are already in our Church Directory. --So glad to report that Jack Hansen continues to make good progress in his recovery from recent cancer surgery. He did have a temporary setback when he contracted pneumonia and was hospitalized, but that has passed, thankfully. He remains at Life Care at Valley View, but the hope is he will return home in the near future. --Thanks to the efforts of several from our Men's Fellowship Group, who spent time in October doing some important upgrading work to our adopted cabin at Pilgrim Cove. Steve Robbins, Carl Van Slyke, Dale Ramsey, Jim Morrow, and Al Busche were able to complete some insulated skirting work around the outside base of the cabin, as well as see that insulation was blown in between the ceiling and roof. Stay tuned for more details about how we can continue this project. --Don't Forget: Daylight Savings Time ends the First Sunday of November. Turn your clocks back before you go to bed on Saturday night, November 5. --Ministry of Volunteers (Nominations) Co-Chairs Laura Shockley and Lois Wade are busy recruiting members to serve as Church Officers, Committee Chairs, and Deacons for 2012. If you are asked, please consider serving in one of these important positions. And, if there is some special way you'd really like to serve, volunteer yourself to Lois or Laura. The Slate of Officers, Committee Chairs, and Deacons will be presented to our Congregational Meeting after church on Sunday, November 27. --Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year. At their last meeting, the Diaconate discussed the "dilemma" of whether or not to have a morning service that day, since history tells us that hardly anyone attends church on Christmas morning, because of the important and precious family celebrations. Since the Christmas Eve Service traditionally is exceptionally well attended, it was decided to make that Worship the focus of our" Joy To The World" celebration, and not have a Service on Christmas Morning. --Thanks to the Stewardship Committee chaired by Carl Van Slyke for their interesting and informative and fun presentations during the Fall Campaign. Remember to bring your 2012 Estimate Of Giving Cards to Church on Sunday, November 6, when we celebrate our Commitment Sunday in Worship. If you can't be there that day, you may mail the cards to the church ahead of time. Having our pledges in hand will immensely help the Committee produce next year's budget and make plans for our ministries. Thanks to everyone!

Stewardship Message

by Carl Van Slyke

Give Love, Our Mission: 1

"For I was hungry and you gave mefood." Matthew 25:35 As you are reading this we have completed three of our four Stewardship emphasis Sundays. Our theme "Count Yourself Blessed" Lk 6:38 gives us food for thought. We have heard about the "Generous Women of the Bible", "God's Guarantee", and "An Inconvenient Truth". Yet to come is "Wealth and Wisdom",

Rochelle A. Stackhouse is the Senior Minister of The Church of the Redeemer, United Church of Christ, New Haven Connecticut says the following about her Church's stewardship campaign: "This month the UCC invites all of us to celebrate Mission:1, an opportunity to serve Jesus by serving those who are hungry. Thinking both locally and globally, we are called to connect with local soup kitchens and food pantries, as well as giving to global hunger projects, especially those addressing hunger in drought stricken East Africa." "Our congregation has decided to connect this program with our annual Generosity Season when we receive pledges for our budget for the coming year. When we pledge to our local congregation, we provide food for those who hunger spiritually, emotionally and physically. We give so that the Communion table is set each month and we may all eat together, becoming the body of Christ. We give so that our building is ready to host Twelve-Step groups who share coffee and transformative stories together. We give so that our children may be fed with the love of their teachers and pastors and the formative stories of the gospel. We give so that our spirits may be fed by music that transports our souls. We give so that when a hungry neighbor calls, as happened today while I was writing this, we had a food closet stocked and supermarket gift cards ready." "Someone once said, "The church exists for mission as fire exists for burning." We give love, our Mission:l." Does this sound like our Church. I think it does. Our Church faces some critical issues as we prepare our budget for 2012. Our income for 2011 is falling short of the dollars that were budgeted. Please prayerfully consider these thoughts as you prepare your annual pledge to be presented on Sunday, November 6, during the morning worship hour. Your response will determine how we fulfill our mission.

NOTES FROM THE BOARD "Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? ...1 have heard you calling ... 1 will go, Lord, if you lead me." We can all be inspired to action by the powerful words of the hymn, "Here I Am, Lord". Knowing God will lead us, if we will only listen, and follow God's path, we conducted the business of the Church. We all know these are difficult times, however difficult times are nothing new. Weare tempted to withhold of ourselves until times are less difficult. But now is the time when the need is great. We were reminded of this by Linda Baxter; as we discussed the role of our Church in providing our monthly community supper. Our Church will find the resources to continue this worthwhile outreach. Weare well into our stewardship drive. Please consider what gifts you can provide to our Church. Our pledges will set the Church's budget for next year. We are committed to a balanced budget, and every gift, large or small helps. Our budget sets the priorities for our Church. In the past years, while we have spent within our budget, and honored all our financial commitments, we have overreached our resources. We have been overly optimistic as to our income, and have spent more than we have received. We were able to make up the difference between our budgeted expenses and our income by using cash reserves which were intended to be held in special funds. Our cash reserves and special funds are nearly depleted. As we set our budget for next year we will have difficult decisions to make as to how to allocate our financial resources. We invite every member and friend of Wright Church to participate in our budget process. This is your Church and input from all members is welcome at our November Congregational meeting as we discuss our preliminary budget. We have a wonderful, strong, and full-spirited Church. Together in Christ we will prevail to overcome any difficulties which we may face. Here we are Lord, it is us Lord, we have heard you calling, and we will go Lord, as you lead us. Respectfully Submitted, Will Patterson, Board Chair

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27 HANGING OF THE GREENS FOR ADVENT

:~~

Every year, on the First Sunday of the Advent/Christmas Season, we transform the Church into the colors and beauty of this wonderful time of the year. And this year is no different: On Sunday morning, November 27, you are invited to join us beginning at 9:15 AM, for coffee, juice, and goodies, at to lend a hand to this project. In an hour or so, everything will be made beautiful for the Season! We supply the decorations! You add the creativity! ALSO, on that same morning, we will, of course, light the big Sanctuary Christmas Tree for the first time. This year we want to you to help us personalize the tree by bringing a new or old or favorite decoration and placing it on that tree for the month of Christmas Celebration. We will all do that at the beginning of the Worship Service and enjoy the decorations until the First of the Year. When we take down the tree about January 1, you can take your special ornament home or leave it here for future use. ((Joy To The World and Peace On Earth!"

Dear Wright Church Thank you once again for the scholarship. I cannot believe I am half way done with my schooling! Thank you for the support and I am thankful to be apart of a congregation that supports education. Currently I am working towards being an occupational therapist (athletic training student). My long term goal is to work with disabled children in rehab settings. I am very passionate about this area & have no doubt in my heart & mind that there is where my life should be. Thank you for allowing me to find & work toward these dreams. Anna Tominaga

"It's true we have a serious budget shortfall, Sam, but we can't charge tuition for Sunday school."

HAPPY 10th ANNIVERSARY COMMUNITY SUPPER!!! From Linda Baxter I find it hard to believe that it has been 10 years since Wright Congregational United Church of Christ was approached to help feed the community. We were asked if we would like to do a dinner 1 night a month to share the abundance that we had. Ten years ago 4 churches in our community got together to see if it was possible for each of our churches to put on a dinner once a month for the disadvantaged, homeless, lonely, members of the community surrounding our churches. Here is a brief history of the event: Our first supper we had 15 guests and about as many helpers. We have some regulars and new people each month. It is so good to see them here. Even if we served just one person it is worth it. We have had anywhere from 15 guests to 130. Of course when we have a larger crowd, they are not all seated at the same time. On the average we serve 60 to 75 people. We have singles and families come for dinner. We serve them sit down style, tablecloths, flower centerpieces, the whole bit. We didn't want it to be cafeteria style. Thought you might like to know the menu: Lasagne Casserole Meatloaf. Vegetable Mashed Potatoes/Gravy Salad Vegetable Rolls Salad Dessert Rolls Coffee/Punch Dessert Coffee/Punch Joan Wenske and I took turns every other month until about 3 years ago and now Sandy Gillmore & Jim Erickson help me as Joan has taken a much need retirement. We started out with food we had gotten from a 2 minute race through the new Albertsons at Vista and Overland Grand opening. You wouldn't believe how much food you can get in a grocery cart when the main item you're going after is MEAT! I got enough in the cart to get us going for four 4 months. Oh, I also had to find a small chest size freezer, quick, to put the 1OOlbsof ground beef in. Thanks to Jack Wenske, who has an eye for deals! We have had 2 grants (one for $1500 and one for $2500) from Fred Meyers and when the church hosted the CPC Spring Assembly we received $2400 (money that was left after expenses were paid). These grants got us thru 81/2 yrs. The cost to prepare the meal is between $100 -$125. Thank you to Jack & Joan Wenske for getting us the grants. I have to tell you about one occasion that happened this past August, but, it is similar to many others thru the years. It was a family of 41children and their Mother who had come for dinner. We were very busy serving the meals and this young boy, about 7, wrs at the counter. I asked if I could help him. He asked very politely if he and his sister could have seconds. I said of c9urse, and they wanted everything. I gave it to them, and they ate it all and wondered if they could have more. Again I said yes and helped them back to their table. There was a baby under 1yr and another sibling and Mom. I chatted with he~ and found out that that was the only meal they had had that day and probably others.

This is why we do the meals. We don't do the meals November and December, since there seems to be a lot of help those 2 months!! We will start again in January. We only have 1 problem. NO MONEY! We thought we could try some fundraising to get everyone in the church involved.

Starting the 30th of October there will be a FOOD JAR in the Narthex, and if you have any Change in your pocket or purse just drop it in the jar. I'm positive this will help fund the dinners for the community. Jim Morrow will still be working on grants and contacting businesses. Thank you so much everyone for all you hllp & support. WE couldn't have done it without YOU!!!!
