Microfabrication Lab: To prepare physics students for careers in the growing semiconductor industry— Intel plans to open a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Ohio in 2025— this space boasts device fabrication and electrical/optical characterization capabilities.

INTERNSHIPS YOU CAN LAND:

Molecular Spectroscopic Sensing Facility: Equipped with a wide range of spectrometers and sensors, this facility trains students in studying experimental physics, developing scientific instruments, and modeling physical systems. The things you learn in this lab have applications in astrophysics and human-performance-related breath analysis.

Molecular Biology Laboratory: This lab includes cutting-edge molecular tools for polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization, and RNAi and molecular cloning. Learning these techniques will prepare you to do high-level research projects and generate data on how cells repair themselves.

These information sessions feature subject-matter experts in a range of health fields. They share insights about their experiences in graduate school and daily practice.

Gain experience in your chosen field and put your learning to the test with an internship, where you work for a professional company or lab. Our college career consultant will help you create a résumé, polish your interview skills, and complete applications. Spots are often available with the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA, Ball Aerospace, and many other topnotch employers.

Chemistry Instrumentation Center: Here you’ll use analysis equipment that’s common in professional laboratories to identify metals, ions, polymers, and other organic compounds in environmental, biological, and industrial samples.

Orly Leiva ’13 Biological Sciences

His Wright State education led to a career in medicine. Then that career led to the front lines of the pandemic.

As an internal medicine resident at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Orly volunteered to work in the ICU to gain experience in critical care. He also gained experience fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, then in its initial surge.

Orly Leiva has always loved science.

After taking an honors biology class in high school, he was hooked.

“I realized that I wanted to become a doctor because it merged science, humanity, and the care of others,” he says.

Enrolling at Wright State allowed Orly to remain close to his family in Miamisburg. The son of parents from Guatemala, Orly was part of a program designed to open STEM fields to more students who are members of historically underrepresented races, are disabled, or are economically disadvantaged.

At Wright State, Orly had his first intensive, structured research experience, working on projects with faculty and graduate students.

He also presented at a national conference, where he published his first two papers.

He credits that practical learning with laying a solid foundation for what came next. Without his Wright State education, he says, “I would not have had the career trajectory I am on now.”

It’s quite a trajectory, too—and it’s still in the early stages.

It was challenging: taking shifts when the ICU was handling about five times its average number of patients.

But his presence proved essential for many of his Hispanic patients. Families couldn’t visit the ICU, but Orly could update them in Spanish. “I found it rewarding to be able to speak the language, and families were grateful,” he says.

By offering crucial information and comfort during a frightening time, Orly realized his goal of practicing medicine—merging science and the care of others. He also realized Wright State’s goal—ensuring that students of all races, abilities, and economic backgrounds have the opportunity to come as they are and learn all they can.

Neil Pohl ’23 Physics

He took classes at Wright State as a high schooler.

Now he’s taking on the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Wright State has close ties with WrightPatterson Air Force Base. Neil Pohl does, too.

As a regular participant in his high school’s science fairs, Neil was an ideal fit for the Wright Scholar program, run by Wright-Patterson. The program accepts high-achieving high school students interested in STEM fields.

RAIDER SPOTLIGHT collaborate on research projects with scientists and engineers at the base’s Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).

In addition to being a Wright Scholar, Neil also took classes at Wright State while in high school. When it was time for his undergraduate studies, enrolling at the university made perfect sense— as did interning at AFRL. Applying what he’s studying as a physics major, Neil is involved in multiple projects at AFRL. Each has the potential to be put to practical use by the lab’s scientists and engineers “to make sure that our warfighters have the technological advantage on the battlefield,” says AFRL spokesman Bryan Ripple.

In one initiative, Neil is looking at “how efficient certain pulses are, compared to normal spark plugs for aircraft.”

A second research effort involves modeling the emissions spectra of diatomic nitrogen. Neil is creating a graphical user interface (GUI) that would allow users to measure the gas temperature from their experimental data. Not only would Neil’s project, once approved, aid the work of AFRL scientists and engineers; it would also save the lab the expense of using commercial counterparts.

About this work, Neil says, “The GUI is in a pretty good state right now. I can put in an infinite number of files. It can switch between the files. I can calibrate the spectrometer. It works.”

If you’re a new in-state student who completes your undergraduate degree in four years, we make you a promise: the cost of tuition, housing, and dining won’t change.

You can plan your budget and costs from the outset.

We recently redesigned our scholarship program to offer an increased number of awards that can reduce the cost of your education.

You can also count on this: Wright State’s tuition is among the lowest in Ohio for fouryear universities.

Just as we keep tuition costs low, we rank high in the economic mobility index.

This index looks at the cost of a four-year degree and compares that to postgraduate earnings. (You may sometimes hear this called return on investment.) Wright State is among the top 20 percent of universities and colleges in the country for economic mobility, and we’re #2 among public universities in Ohio.

Some scholarships are based on academic performance; some on financial need.

Award amounts vary, and most are renewable each year, as long as you continue to meet the stated criteria.
