SPACES YOU’LL USE: Tom Hanks Center for Motion Pictures: Tom Hanks first came to Wright State in 1978 to appear in a Shakespeare play, and after working with many alumni, he turned into a loyal fan of the university. He’s established a scholarship, donated memorabilia, and co-chaired the fundraising campaign that helped build this facility (named in his honor). At 14,500 square feet, the center includes a production studio, editing suites, a voiceover booth, and a “green room” used by students to collaborate on projects.

Creative Arts Center (CAC): The heart of the college includes a music wing featuring a recital hall and Schuster Hall, a 250-seat concert space, where budding opera singers, pianists, and orchestras showcase their talents. The Festival Playhouse, Herbst Theatre, and Directing Lab offer performance spaces that replicate those of Broadway and smaller black-box style venues, all professionally equipped. The dance studio—with its sprung floor, specialized lighting, and dressing rooms—hosts classes and performances.

Also in the CAC, the well-equipped costume shop keeps pace with outfits and props for plays and projects. And with one of Ohio’s largest darkrooms, three printmaking studios, and multiple large painting areas, the building offers fine artists all the space and tools they need to create.

The Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries: Part exhibition space for students and faculty, part educational resource for campus and community, these galleries host senior thesis exhibits, traveling shows from international artists, public lectures, and a permanent collection of contemporary works.

PLACES YOU’LL GO:

Music students often travel for international performances and classes taught by master musicians— think Italy, Greece, Australia, Japan, and England.

The art program offers many studyabroad adventures to Italy, France, and England for students to see historic pieces firsthand.

Theatre students can take an immersive 10-day summer course in Canada to attend the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.

INTERNSHIPS YOU’LL LAND: Gain experience in your chosen discipline with an internship, where you apply your studies and talents to a job with an arts organization. Wright State offers two in-house internships: the Stein Galleries Curatorial Internship and the Fine Arts Technical Internship, both of which give students a behind-the-scenes understanding of working with art.

She was the first female production designer on a Marvel film, Black Panther. Then she was nominated for an Oscar—the first time the Academy had recognized a Black person in the category. Then she won.

She’s gotten used to being the first, the only.

When she enrolled at Wright State intending to become a director, Hannah Beachler was 30 and a mom to a young son—the only parent in her cohort.

But having her own apartment full of furniture and gear gave her plenty of supplies to create realistic sets for the short films she was making.

As Hannah wrote in a Variety article, “One of my professors said, ‘Your art direction is very intricate and provocative. You should think about going into the art department.’”

At the time, she wasn’t sure what her professor was referring to. After researching, Hannah discovered that production design—environments, aesthetics, the “stuff,” as she calls it—fascinated her. Under the late Wright State professor emerita Julia Reichert (herself an Oscar winner), Hannah studied her craft inside and out.

In her early days as a set dresser, Hannah absorbed everything she could, including carpentry and visual effects. “I learned every position in the art department,” she says.

“That really informed where I am today.”

The other thing she learned is that being a Black woman made her a rarity in the film industry.

When Black Panther was in development, Marvel had never hired a female production designer before.

To win the job, Hannah followed the advice she often gives to up-andcomers: “You have to invest in yourself.

You have to believe in yourself and your abilities.”

For her, that meant developing a 400page pitch book, spending her own money, and setting up an entire room of images detailing her vision for Wakanda.

It worked, too: she was hired with a $30 million budget, the movie was a blockbuster, and she won the Academy Award for best production design, the first Black woman ever to do so.

Hannah’s hope for everyone entering filmmaking and the arts is that they’ll follow her other piece of advice, and embrace standing out.

SPACES YOU’LL USE: James Hughes Reading Room: Named for one of the university’s founding faculty members, the reading room showcases Dr. Hughes’s collection of American literature. It serves multiple purposes, including offering students a quiet place to relax with a good book.

Any space you like: If you need remote learning options, many liberal arts courses are available online, including Philosophy of Law. Courses specific to the Professional and Technical Writing concentration degree are fully online, and the Liberal Studies program can also be completed entirely online.

INTERNSHIPS YOU’LL LAND: Gain experience in your chosen field and put your learning to the test with an internship. Our students regularly “test-drive” their future jobs by completing an internship with regional, national, and international employers, such as the National Museum of Natural History, the Library of Congress, secondary schools, magazines, and more.

FACULTY YOU’LL KNOW: Our faculty have earned prestigious fellowships and awards from the Edgar Allan Poe Award to the North Caroliniana Society to the Palestine American Research Center. That means your professors are connected to worldwide networks of humanities scholars and professionals, and can share the latest research, publications, and fieldwork with you.

Study-abroad programs are available during summer and winter breaks, for a semester, or for the full school year. Many are tied to coursework—exploring Viking history in Scandinavia, or reading Irish literature in Galway for example. Some offer service learning opportunities, where you volunteer and broaden your cultural awareness at the same time.

The Ryterband Symposium provides you an opportunity to learn more about religious traditions and social justice in our local communities.

Our annual lecture series and seminars welcome renowned scholars and artists to campus to present their work on a range of topics in the fields of philosophy, history, and religion.

Being open to learning can be a career choice.

That’s a big lesson Anna Helmig gained at Wright State.

She uses that perspective every day in her role as collections manager and registrar at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton, overseeing everything from live boa constrictors to meteorites.

It is her dream job—a dream she’s had since she was young. “I grew up visiting the Boonshoft,” she notes. “Even though I work here and am grown now, I still like to walk around and appreciate our amazing artifacts, exhibits, and adorable zoo animals.”

The dream started to become real when Anna visited Wright State as a high school junior, an experience common among students in the region.

As she says, “I felt right at home and I knew I belonged at Wright State.”

Though she was sure she wanted to work in the humanities, Anna wrestled with the real-world applications of her studies. She credits her professors with helping her put her concerns to rest.

“They encouraged me to pursue work in the humanities sector despite my worries I wouldn’t be ‘good’ enough to land a job in my dream field,” she says. “My professors not only instilled critical skills and knowledge, but also helped me gain the confidence I needed to succeed as a public history professional.”

As it turns out, the right skills and knowledge plus the ability to tolerate unknowns are assets in Anna’s current role.

“With over 1.8 million artifacts in our care, I definitely am not an expert on every single object within the collection,” she points out. “I consider this a positive thing, as it means I have the opportunity to learn more about a diverse range of topics—from how to best store Ordovician trilobites to how to clean and style a taxidermy Blesbok mount.”

Pamela Cone’s journey to Wright State took her across the globe and across many different industries.

With her husband’s Air Force career, the pair moved frequently, which made it difficult for her to solidify a career of her own. From England to Oklahoma, from envelopes to managing medical offices, she dabbled in a little bit of everything, everywhere. Eventually, they landed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base—and, as they began to put down roots, Pamela began to pursue her degree: first at Sinclair College, and then at Wright State, where she majored in communication.

“Communication is a ‘soft skills’ degree, but it’s very valuable for companies and organizations,” she said. “It allows individuals to have a different perspective, to think outside the box, to develop critical thinking skills, to look for what’s not there, and to build from that type of research and vantage point.”

When the pandemic hit in 2020, business owners were forced to pivot, making that “outside the box” mindset more vital than ever. Pamela took notice and decided to put her skills into practice, working out of her basement as the director of Aviatra Accelerators Dayton, a nonprofit consultancy for women-owned businesses. Through

video conferences, Pamela offered entrepreneurs crucial information on topics like how to connect virtually and how to apply for funding for personal protective equipment. By September, Aviatra Dayton was helping women establish businesses with its first Explore cohort of 12 participants. Since then, the consultancy has served more than 200 clients, from online apparel retailers to therapy staffing companies.

Now that many companies are back to “business as usual,” there’s less of a need for COVID protocols. But as Pamela knows, there will always be a need for critical thinkers who know how to adapt to a changing marketplace.

And, thanks to the knowledge and skills she gained at Wright State, her business will surely continue to thrive in an evershifting industry landscape.

TUNNELS Our underground tunnel system is one of the largest in the country (for colleges, at least). It runs nearly two miles and connects 21 buildings.

If you’re a new in-state student who completes your undergraduate degree in four years, we make you a promise: the cost of tuition, housing, and dining won’t change.

You can plan your budget and costs from the outset.

We recently redesigned our scholarship program to offer an increased number of awards that can reduce the cost of your education.

You can also count on this: Wright State’s tuition is among the lowest in Ohio for fouryear universities.

Just as we keep tuition costs low, we rank high in the economic mobility index.

This index looks at the cost of a four-year degree and compares that to postgraduate earnings. (You may sometimes hear this called return on investment.) Wright State is among the top 20 percent of universities and colleges in the country for economic mobility, and we’re #2 among public universities in Ohio.

Some scholarships are based on academic performance; some on financial need.

Award amounts vary, and most are renewable each year, as long as you continue to meet the stated criteria.

FINANCIAL AID Enrollment Services (RaiderConnect) is your all-in-one resource for helping put together a full financial aid package. Your offer may include federal and state grants (which do not need to be repaid), federal and state loans (which do need to be repaid), workstudy, military benefits, or other options you can use to fund your Wright State education.
