While the college is new, its intention is timeless: taking care of others. Nursing, teaching, social work, allied health—these fields draw the compassionate and courageous, those who believe helping and healing can be both their purpose and their profession.

You may come to us straight out of high school or after years in your field; either way, our faculty will help you grow your expertise through intensive scholarship and research projects. Extensive practical training will make up a big part of your Wright State education. Through labs and field placements, you’ll gain proficiency with the latest techniques and equipment in your industry. Supervised by clinical faculty, you’ll work directly with patients, clients, and students, putting your skills into service.

FACILITIES YOU’LL USE: Nursing Labs: In our state-of-the-art labs, you can work through realistic patient scenarios, from childbirth to hospice care. Infant, pediatric, adult, and geriatric mannequins simulate health issues and treatment responses, including seizures and cardiac events that require CPR and defibrillation.

Exam Rooms: Our exam rooms include all the equipment for typical care settings—otoscope, ophthalmoscope, thermometer, blood pressure cuff—so you can conduct head-to-toe patient assessments.

Task Trainers: These lifelike models of body parts help you hone specific skills, such as assessing blood pressure, managing airways, inserting catheters, performing injections, and listening for abnormal lung and heart sounds.

Community Partners: Our network of local partners includes health care organizations, school districts, nonprofits, and more. You’ll have opportunities to practice what you’re learning in professional spaces alongside seasoned experts, so you can get used to the environment and equipment of your chosen field.

Counseling Lab: This space allows students to practice and refine counseling skills while peers and professors observe behind a oneway mirror. You can review recorded sessions, learn about reflective listening and nonverbal communication techniques, and perform biopsychosocial assessments.

TRAINING YOU’LL COMPLETE: Education majors begin working in area school districts as early as their first year, and continue through a final year of student teaching.

Students spend more hours practicing their teaching skills than required by the state. Our Office of Partnerships and Field Experiences coordinates these placements so they’re mutually beneficial for you and the school you’re serving.

Nursing majors complete 600 hours of clinical experiences with patients of a broad range of ages and conditions. We partner with multiple facilities in the region, so you’ll train under the experts in our area’s finest teaching hospitals, senior communities, and medical centers.

Organizational leadership majors complete internships with corporate and nonprofit organizations to put their management, communication, and team-building abilities to the test in a real workplace.

Social work majors complete placements in one of our partner agencies in the Dayton area, which include juvenile courts, schools, social services agencies, and more. In your practicum, you’ll apply your learning, hone techniques, and create and employ interventions.

Majors in sports science with a health and fitness concentration complete an internship assisting clients and patients in achieving their physical goals. Opportunities include hospitals and clinics, wellness centers, nursing homes, fitness centers, and sports science laboratories.

Integrated human services majors begin learning about community resources for human services and volunteer in the field in their first year. Students go on to intern with organizations that reflect their fields of interest; your responsibilities may include useful job-preparation skills such as interviewing clients, recording cases, teaching job-seeking and independent living skills, and contacting resource providers.

Growing up in foster care leaves many children without the support and stability to complete high school, let alone college. Kurt Holden bucked the system: he earned two degrees and became a university leader, too.

Leadership comes in many shapes and forms.

For Kurt Holden, it’s about showing empathy and offering help.

As a child growing up in the foster care system, Kurt learned from one of his foster parents about the impact kindness can make: “He brought me in and treated me like his own kids,” Kurt recalls.

After taking on odd jobs, attending community college, and training at the Sinclair Police Academy, Kurt began working for the Wright State police force.

While moving up the ladder in the department, he enrolled in the university’s organizational leadership bachelor’s degree program. He felt a sense of belonging among all the nontraditional students that Wright State attracted, and knew the program would help advance his career.

And he did: after graduating with a bachelor’s degree, he went on to earn a master’s degree in leadership development.

Through it all, Kurt has continued to serve on the university police force, steadily receiving promotions that reflect his leadership abilities. Recently, he was named Wright State’s director of public safety, a role that oversees the university’s police department and several other areas.

Kurt plans to bring his characteristic empathy and kindness to the job every day. Pointing to a lesson from his time in foster care, he says, “I’ve honestly learned you can do more in the community with a helping hand than you can with handcuffs.”

He continues, “You have to be a really good listener and make yourself available. You’ll be shocked at what kind of difference you can make.”

Statistics indicate that only 2 to 3 percent of children who have been through the foster care system earn college degrees. But Kurt was determined to lead by example. “I wanted to prove to myself and to other kids who were in my situation that you can do this,” he says.

For one athlete, an education in sports science may lead to advances that help children with disabilities.

“I grew up playing sports. I played soccer my whole life and then I got into running, which is what I did a Wright State. It was a lot to balance with school, but I absolutely loved being able to do both.”

Abigail Halsey grew up playing soccer, and distinguished herself as a runner in track and field when she came to Wright State.

By pursuing a bachelor’s degree in sports science, followed by a master’s degree in physical education, she was able to combine her education with her athleticism.

One of Abigail’s special interests is how sports and physical activity help young people develop. During her training at Wright State to become a certified autism exercise specialist, she encountered some research that piqued her curiosity. The studies showed that children with autism who participated in aerobic exercise (such as running and walking) before their daily activities and schoolwork showed a decrease in stereotypical behaviors.

She noticed, however, that another type of exercise was not as well-studied.

She wondered whether neuromuscular exercise, which supports balance, coordination, and agility, could also help children with autism.

Inspired by this line of inquiry, Abigail set a goal to explore it. For her master’s research project, she developed an eight-week neuromuscular exercise program for children with autism.

She worked with three children, ages 5 to 6, on a series of exercises.

She ranked the severity of their stereotypical behaviors before, during, and after the sessions.

As the project progressed, Abigail’s theory seemed to be panning out: she saw a decrease in the children’s stereotypical behaviors. And, interestingly, certain neuromuscular exercises had a greater effect than others.

Abigail noted that “with exercises like walking and knee lifts, their behaviors weren’t as severe.” She also found that the more the children were able to focus on the activity, the greater the impact it had.

After completing this study, Abigail hopes to take her promising research further—with another degree. She plans to earn a doctorate in occupational therapy, making another big goal for herself: designing a gym that’s fully accessible for children with disabilities.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER If you come as a parent, then the child development center on campus supplies a safe and stimulating place for little ones to learn while you’re in class or lab.

CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS Fraternities and sororities, student government, community service, ROTC— Wright State has lots of ways for you to find your niche, meet people, and explore your interests. The college also has more than a dozen career-related clubs, like the Association of Student Nurses, the African American Teachers Association, the Human Service Club, the American Sign Language Club and the Student Advisory Board.

We recently redesigned our scholarship program to offer an increased number of awards that can reduce the cost of your education.

You can also count on this: Wright State’s tuition is among the lowest in Ohio for fouryear universities.

Just as we keep tuition costs low, we rank high in the economic mobility index.

This index looks at the cost of a four-year degree and compares that to postgraduate earnings. (You may sometimes hear this called return on investment.) Wright State is among the top 20 percent of universities and colleges in the country for economic mobility, and we’re #2 among public universities in Ohio.

Some scholarships are based on academic performance; some on financial need.

Award amounts vary and most are renewable each year, as long as you continue to meet the stated criteria.
